We present the archive of the wide-field plate observations obtained at the University Observatory Jena, which is stored at the Astrophysical Institute of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The archive contains plates taken in the period February 1963 to December 1982 with the 60/90/180-cm Schmidt telescope of the university observatory. A computer-readable version of the plate metadata catalogue (for 1257 plates), the logbooks, as well as the digitized Schmidt plates in low and high resolution are now accessible to the astronomical community. This paper describes the properties of the archive, as well as the processing procedure of all plates in detail.

We present new results from optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eruptive pre-main sequence star V2493 Cyg (HBC 722). The object has continued to undergo significant brightness variations over the past few months and is an ideal target for follow-up observations. We carried out CCD BVRI photometric observations in the field of V2493 Cyg ("Gulf of Mexico") from August 1994 to April 2012, i.e. at the pre-outburst states and during the phases of the outburst. We acquired high, medium, and low resolution spectroscopy of V2493 Cyg during the outburst. To study the pre-outburst variability of the target and construct its historical light curve, we searched for archival observations in photographic plate collections. Both CCD and photographic observations were analyzed using 15 comparison stars in the field of V2493 Cyg. The pre-outburst photographic and CCD photometric observations of V2493 Cyg show low-amplitude light variations typical of T Tauri stars. The recent photometric data show a slow light decrease from October 2010 to June 2011 followed by an increase in brightness that continued until early 2012. The spectral observations of V2493 Cyg are typical of FU Orionis stars absorption spectra with strong P Cyg profiles of H alpha and Na I D lines. On the basis of photometric monitoring performed over the past two years, the spectral properties at the maximal light, as well as the shape of long-term light curves, we confirm that the observed outburst of V2493 Cyg is of FU Orionis type.

Abstract:
Saturated stellar images on digitised photographic plates are many times greater in area than the `seeing disk' seen in unsaturated CCD images. Indeed the flux profile of a bright star can be traced out for several degrees from the star's centre. Saturated stellar images on digitised photographic plates are many times greater in area than the `seeing disk' seen in unsaturated CCD images. Indeed the flux profile of a bright star can be traced out for several degrees from the star's centre. The radius of the saturated stellar image can often be directly related to the magnitude of the star, a fact well known and exploited in iris photometry. In this work we compare the radial flux profile of stars in the approximate range B ~9 to ~13 mag, obtained from scans of plates from the Bamberg Sky Patrol archive, with a profile of the form measured by King. We show that simple aperture photometry of saturated stellar images, obtained from photo-positives of scanned photographic plates, yield data that are in agreement with simulations using a (saturated) synthetic stellar radius profile. Raw plate magnitudes from this aperture photometry can be easily and satisfactorily transformed to standard magnitudes, as demonstrated in a recent study carried out by the current authors.

Abstract:
We use the archive of the Bamberg Sky Patrol to obtain light curves of the active K subgiant CF Octantis for the interval 1964-1976. Digitised images of the field near CF Oct were obtained with a flat-bed scanner. Aperture photometry was performed of photo-positives of these images. Using a transformation to second order in plate magnitude, and first order in B-V, for 9 field stars for each plat…

Using a transformation to second order in plate magnitude, and first order in B-V, for 9 field stars for each plate, the B magnitudes of CF Octantis were obtained for just over 350 plates. The estimated precision of an individual determination of the B magnitude of CF Oct is 0.05 mag. Analysis of the resulting data reveals the known 20 d rotational variation of this star, and shows the evolution of the light curves from year to year. We obtain light curves with good phase coverage for 1964 to 1969 inclusive, partial light curves for 1970 and 1976, and a few data points from 1971. The amplitude of variation ranges from ~0.2 to \~0.4 mag. There is evidence that the characteristic rotation period of the star in the 1960s was slightly less than that measured from photoelectric photometry in the 1980s.
