Abstract:
We explicitly compute the Rankin-Selberg type integral introduced by Piatetski-Shapiro over adeles for vector-valued Siegel cusp forms of square-free levels $Γ_0(N)$. On the way, for particular test functions in the Bessel models of irreducible admissible representations, exact evaluations of the local zeta-integrals are given.

We introduce a local zeta-function for an irreducible admissible supercuspidal representation $π$ of the metaplectic double cover of $\SL_2$ over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. We prove a functional equation of the local zeta-functions showing that the gamma factor is given by a Mellin type transform of the Bessel function of $π$. We obtain an expression of the gamma factor, which shows its entireness on $\C$. Moreover, we show that, through the local theta-correspondence, the local zeta-function on the covering group is essentially identified with the local zeta-integral for spherical functions on ${\rm PGL}_2\cong {\rm SO}_3$ associated with the prehomogenous vector space of binary symmetric matrices.

In a neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) experiment, energy resolution is important to distinguish between $0νββ$ and background events. CAlcium fluoride for studies of Neutrino and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) discerns the $0νββ$ of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator as the detector and source. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) collect scintillation photons. At the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca, the current energy resolution (2.6%) exceeds the ideal statistical fluctuation of the number of photoelectrons (1.6%). Because of CaF$_2$'s long decay constant of 1000 ns, a signal integration within 4000 ns is used to calculate the energy. The baseline fluctuation ($σ_{baseline}$) is accumulated in the signal integration, thus degrading the energy resolution. This paper studies $σ_{baseline}$ in the CANDLES detector, which severely degrades the resolution by 1% at the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca. To avoid $σ_{\rm baseline}$, photon counting can be used to obtain the number of photoelectrons in each PMT; however, a significant photoelectron signal overlap** probability in each PMT causes missing photoelectrons in counting and reduces the energy resolution. "Partial photon counting" reduces $σ_{baseline}$ and minimizes photoelectron loss. We obtain improved energy resolutions of 4.5-4.0% at 1460.8 keV ($γ$-ray of $^{40}$K), and 3.3-2.9% at 2614.5 keV ($γ$-ray of $^{208}$Tl). The energy resolution at the Q-value is estimated to be improved from 2.6% to 2.2%, and the detector sensitivity for the $0νββ$ half-life of $^{48}$Ca can be improved by 1.09 times.

The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$π$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $γ$-rays caused by the (n, $γ$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$νββ$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$νββ$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. The $^{48}$Ca isotope has a high potential for use in 0$νββ$ decay search, and is expected to be useful for the development of a next-generation detector for highly sensitive measurements.

Three applications of the explicit formula are given. First, we obtain a functional equation satisfied by the Shintani double zeta functions in addition to Shintani's functional equations. Second, we establish the holomorphicity of a certain Dirichlet series generalizing a result by Ibukiyama and Saito. This Dirichlet series occurs in the study of unipotent contributions of the geometric side of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula of the symplectic group. Third, we prove an asymptotic formula of the weighted average of the central values of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions.

With SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet, we can construct a flexible DAQ network with multi-path access to FADCs by using off-the-shelf computers. FADCs are equipped 8 event buffers, which act as de-randomizer to detect sequential decays from the background. SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet has high latency (about 100 $μ$sec) due to long turnaround time, while GigabitEthernet has high throughput. To reduce dead-time, we developed the DAQ system with 4 "crate-parallel" (modules in crates are read in parallel) reading threads. As a result, the readout time is reduced by 4 times: 40 msec down to 10 msec. With improved performance, it is expected to achieve higher background suppression for CANDLES experiment. Moreover, for energy calibration, "event-parallel" reading process (events are read in parallel) is also introduced to reduce measurement time. With 2 "event-parallel" reading processes, the data rate is increased 2 times.

The finite element method (FEM) has several computational steps to numerically solve a particular problem, to which many efforts have been directed to accelerate the solution stage of the linear system of equations. However, the finite element matrix construction, which is also time-consuming for unstructured meshes, has been less investigated. The generation of the global finite element matrix is performed in two steps, computing the local matrices by numerical integration and assembling them into a global system, which has traditionally been done in serial computing. This work presents a fast technique to construct the global finite element matrix that arises by solving the Poisson's equation in a three-dimensional domain. The proposed methodology consists in computing the numerical integration, due to its intrinsic parallel opportunities, in the graphics processing unit (GPU) and computing the matrix assembly, due to its intrinsic serial operations, in the central processing unit (CPU). In the numerical integration, only the lower triangular part of each local stiffness matrix is computed thanks to its symmetry, which saves GPU memory and computing time. As a result of symmetry, the global sparse matrix also contains non-zero elements only in its lower triangular part, which reduces the assembly operations and memory usage. This methodology allows generating the global sparse matrix from any unstructured finite element mesh size on GPUs with little memory capacity, only limited by the CPU memory.

Non-perturbative renormalization group approach suggests that a large class of nonlinear sigma models are renormalizable in three dimensional space-time, while they are non-renormalizable in perturbation theory. ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models whose target spaces are Einstein-Kähler manifolds with positive scalar curvature belongs to this class. hermitian symmetric spaces, being homogeneous, are specially simple examples of these manifolds. To find an independent evidence of the nonperturbative renormalizability of these models, the large N method, another nonperturbative method, is applied to 3-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on the target spaces $CP^{N-1}=SU(N)/[SU(N-1)\times U(1)]$ and $Q^{N-2}=SO(N)/[SO(N-2)\times SO(2)]$, two typical examples of hermitian symmetric spaces.
We find that $β$ functions in these models agree with the results of the nonperturbative renormalization group approach in the next-to-leading order of 1/N expansion, and have non-trivial UV fixed points. The $β$ function of the $Q^{N-2}$ model receives a nonzero correction in the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion.
We also investigate the phase structures of our models. The $CP^{N-1}$ model has two phases; SU(N) symmetric and asymmetric phase. The $Q^{N-2}$ model has three phases; Chern-Simons, Higgs and SO(N) broken phases. In the Chern-Simons and Higgs phase, SO(N) symmetry remains unbroken and all dynamical fields becomes massive. An auxiliary gauge field also acquires mass, through an induced Chern-Simons term in the Chern-Simons phase, and through the vacuum expectation value of a di-quark bound state in the Higgs phase.

This model contains two kinds of non-perturbatively stable vacua; one of them is the same vacuum as that of supersymmetric CP^{n-1} model, and the other is a new kind of vacuum, which has not yet been known to exist in two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models, the Higgs phase. We show that both of these vacua are asymptotically free. Although symmetries are broken in these vacua, there appear no massless Nambu-Goldstone bosons, in agreement with Coleman's theorem, due to the existence of two different mechanisms in these vacua, the Schwinger and the Higgs mechanisms.
