The temperature at which supercooled liquids turn into solid-like glasses ($T_g$) can change at the free surface, affecting the properties of nanostructured glasses and their applications. However, inadequate experimental resolution to determine the $T_g$ gradient and a longstanding debate over the role of nonequilibrium effects have hindered fundamental understanding of this phenomenon. Using spatially resolved $T_g$ measurements and molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal a crossover from equilibrium behavior to a new regime of near-surface nonequilibrium glass physics on cooling. This crossover causes the form of the nonequilibrium $T_g$ gradient to change, highlighting the need to include these physics for rational understanding of the properties of realistic nanostructured glass-forming materials. They also potentially recast the interpretation of decades of experimental data on nanoconfined glasses.

For films in the deep spinodal region, the growth rate function of the surface modes as a function of the wavevector,, fits well to the mean-field theory. We study the temporal growth pattern of surface fluctuations on a series of spinodally unstable polymer films where the degree of instability is controlled by the film thickness. For films in the deep spinodal region, the growth rate function of the surface modes as a function of the wavevector,, fits well to the mean-field theory. As the film thickness is increased and the film instability decreases, the mean-field theory demonstrates marked disagreement with experiment, notwithstanding provision of the known corrections for random thermal noise. We show that the deviations arise from large-amplitude fluctuations induced by homogeneous nucleation, which has not been considered in conventional treatment of thermal noise.

Abstract:
We consider the pretilt alignment of nematic liquid crystal (LC) on inhomogeneous surface patterns comprising patches of homeotropic or homogeneous alignment domains, with azimuthal anisotropy assumed in the surface plane. We consider the pretilt alignment of nematic liquid crystal (LC) on inhomogeneous surface patterns comprising patches of homeotropic or homogeneous alignment domains, with azimuthal anisotropy assumed in the surface plane. We found that the resultant LC pretilt generally increases continuously from the homogeneous limit to the homeotropic limit as the area fraction of the homeotropic region increases from 0 to 1. The variations are qualitatively different depending on how the distance between patches compares to the extrapolation length of the stronger anchoring domain. Our results agree with those previously found in stripped patterns. The present findings may provide useful guidelines for designing inhomogeneous alignment surfaces for variable LC pretilt control - a subject of much technological interest in recent years.

Abstract:
We study dewetting of thin polymer films with built-in topographical fluctuations produced by rubbing the film surface with a rayon cloth. By varying the density of imposed surface defects, we unambiguously distinguish spinodal dewetting, which dominates in liquid films thinner than a characteristic thickness = 13.3 nm, from heterogeneous nucleation in the thicker films. Invariance of this chara…

Invariance of this characteristic thickness upon more than a decade change in the defect density makes kinetic effect an unseemly origin. A crossover of the spinodal line provides a consistent picture. This interpretation, however, contends the current understanding of molecular interactions in apolar liquid films.

Abstract:
The dependence of the Josephson plasma frequency omega_p in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 on a tilted field H is reported. Measurements over a large range of B and tilt angle theta allow a detailed comparison with a recent calculation by Koshelev. With a slight modification of the model, close agreement is obtained. From the fits, we find values for the in-plane correlation length and the zero-field critica…

From the fits, we find values for the in-plane correlation length and the zero-field critical current density J_{c0} (4,600 A/cm^2 at 30 K). An analogy to Bragg diffraction is described, as well as a picture for the fractional-exponent behavior of omega_p versus H.

Abstract:
We report a statistical analysis of the static speckle produced by illuminating a disordered aerogel sample by a nominally coherent x-ray beam at wiggler beamline X25 at the National Synchrotron Light Source. The results of the analysis allow us to determine that the coherence delivered to the X25 hutch is within 35% of what is expected. The rate of coherent photons is approximately two times sm…

The results of the analysis allow us to determine that the coherence delivered to the X25 hutch is within 35% of what is expected. The rate of coherent photons is approximately two times smaller than expected on the basis of the X25 wiggler source brilliance.
