The stability and dynamical properties of the so-called resonant nonlinear Schrödinger (RNLS) equation, are considered. The RNLS is a variant of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with the addition of a perturbation used to describe wave propagation in cold collisionless plasmas. We first examine the modulational stability of plane waves in the RNLS model, identifying the modifications of the associated conditions from the NLS case. We then move to the study of solitary waves with vanishing and nonzero boundary conditions. Interestingly the RNLS, much like the usual NLS, exhibits both dark and bright soliton solutions depending on the relative signs of dispersion and nonlinearity. The corresponding existence, stability and dynamics of these solutions are studied systematically in this work.

Abstract:
We study the existence, formation and dynamics of gray solitons for an extended quintic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The considered model finds applications to water waves, when the characteristic parameter $kh$ - where $k$ is the wavenumber and $h$ is the undistorted water's depth - takes the critical value $kh=1.363$. The considered model finds applications to water waves, when the characteristic parameter $kh$ - where $k$ is the wavenumber and $h$ is the undistorted water's depth - takes the critical value $kh=1.363$. It is shown that this model admits approximate dark soliton solutions emerging from an effective Korteweg-de Vries equation and that two types of gray solitons exist: fast and slow, with the latter being almost stationary objects. Analytical results are corroborated by direct numerical simulations.

We report the theoretical derivation and the experimental as well as numerical observation of nonlinear phase domain walls in weakly nonlinear deep water surface gravity waves. The domain walls presented are connecting homogeneous zones of weakly nonlinear plane Stokes waves of identical amplitude and wave vector but differences in phase. By exploiting symmetry transformations within the framework of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation we demonstrate the existence of exact analytical solutions representing such domain walls in the weakly nonlinear limit. The walls are in general oblique to the direction of the wavevector and stationary in moving reference frames. Experimental and numerical studies confirm and visualize the findings. While domain walls are well known from many other fields in physics where strong nonlinearities are involved, e.g. in the case of dispersive shock waves, the present findings demonstrate that nonlinear domain walls do also exist in the weakly nonlinear regime of general systems exhibiting dispersive waves.

Motivated by the recent theoretical study of (bright) soliton diode effects in systems with multiple scatterers, as well as by experimental investigations of soliton-impurity interactions, we consider some prototypical case examples of interactions of dark solitons with a pair of scatterers. In a way fundamentally opposite to the case of bright solitons (but consonant to their "anti-particle character"), we find that dark solitons accelerate as they pass the first barrier and hence cannot be trapped by a second equal-height barrier. A pair of unequal barriers may lead to reflection from the second one, however trap** in the inter-barrier region cannot occur. We also give some examples of dynamical adjusting the barriers to trap the dark soliton in the inter-barrier region, yet we show that this can only occur over finite time horizons, with the dark soliton always esca** eventually, contrary again to what is potentially the case with bright solitons.

We study dark solitons near potential and nonlinearity steps and combinations thereof, forming rectangular barriers. This setting is relevant to the contexts of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (where such steps can be realized by using proper external fields) and nonlinear optics (for beam propagation near interfaces separating optical media of different refractive indices). We use perturbation theory to develop an equivalent particle theory, describing the matter-wave or optical soliton dynamics as the motion of a particle in an effective potential. This Newtonian dynamical problem provides information for the soliton statics and dynamics, including scenarios of reflection, transmission, or quasi-trap** at such steps. The case of multiple such steps and its connection to barrier potentials is also touched upon. Our analytical predictions are found to be in very good agreement with the corresponding numerical results.

We study scattering of quasi one-dimensional matter-waves at an interface of two spatial domains, one with repulsive and one with attractive interatomic interactions. It is shown that the incidence of a Gaussian wavepacket from the repulsive to the attractive region gives rise to generation of a soliton train. More specifically, the number of emergent solitons can be controlled e.g. by the variation of the amplitude or the width of the incoming wavepacket. Furthermore, we study the reflectivity of a soliton incident from the attractive region to the repulsive one. We find the reflection coefficient numerically and employ analytical methods, that treat the soliton as a particle (for moderate and large amplitudes) or a quasi-linear wavepacket (for small amplitudes), to determine the critical soliton momentum - as function of the soliton amplitude - for which total reflection is observed.

In the present contribution, we explore a host of different stationary states, namely dark-bright solitons and their lattices, that arise in the context of multi-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. The latter, are modeled by systems of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with general interaction (nonlinearity) coefficients $g_{ij}$. It is found that in some particular parameter ranges such solutions can be obtained in analytical form, however, numerically they are computed as existing in a far wider parametric range. Many features of the solutions under study, such as their analytical form without the trap or the stability/dynamical properties of one dark-bright soliton even in the presence of the trap are obtained analytically and corroborated numerically. Additional features, such as the stability of soliton lattice homogeneous states or their existence/stability in the presence of the trap, are examined numerically.

We study the dynamics of non-autonomous bright-dark matter-wave solitons in two- and three- component Bose-Einstein condensates. Our setting includes a time-dependent parabolic potential and scattering length, as well as Rabi coupling of the separate hyperfine states. By means of a similarity transformation, we transform the non-autonomous coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations into the completely integrable Manakov model with defocusing nonlinearity, and construct the explicit form of the non-autonomous soliton solutions. The propagation characteristics for the one-soliton state, and collision scenarios for multiple soliton states are discussed in detail for two types of time-dependent nonlinearities: a kink-like one and a periodically modulated one, with appropriate time-dependence of the trap** potential. We find that in the two-component condensates the nature of soliton propagation is determined predominantly by the nature of the nonlinearity, as well as the temporal modulation of the harmonic potential; switching in this setting is essentially due to Rabi coupling. We also perform direct numerical simulation of the non-autonomous two-component coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations to corroborate our analytical predictions. More interestingly, in the case of the three-component condensates, we find that the solitons can lead to collision-induced energy switching (energy-sharing collision), that can be profitably used to control Rabi switching or vice-versa. An interesting possibility of reversal of the nature of the constituent soliton, i.e., bright (dark) into dark (bright) due to Rabi coupling is demonstrated in the three-component setting.

We study formation of solitons induced by counterflows of immiscible superfluids. Our setting is based on a quasi-one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), composed of two immiscible components with large and small numbers of atoms in them. Assuming that the "small" component moves with constant velocity, either by itself, or being dragged by a moving trap, and intrudes into the "large" counterpart, the following results are obtained. Depending on the velocity, and on whether the small component moves in the absence or in the presence of the trap, two-component dark-bright solitons, scalar dark solitons, or multiple dark solitons may emerge, the latter outcome taking place due to breakdown of the superfluidity. We present two sets of analytical results to describe this phenomenology. In an intermediate velocity regime, where dark-bright solitons form, a reduction of the two-component Gross-Pitaevskii system to an integrable Mel'nikov system is developed, demonstrating that solitary waves of the former are very accurately described by analytically available solitons of the latter. In the high-velocity regime, where the breakdown of the superfluidity induces the formation of dark solitons and multi-soliton trains, an effective single-component description, in which a strongly localized wave packet of the "small" component acts as an effective potential for the "large" one, allows us to estimate the critical velocity beyond which the coherent structures emerge in good agreement with the numerical results.
