We consider a $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS solution for a D3 brane probe in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ that has world-volume geometry of AdS$_3 \times S^1$. It intersects the boundary over a surface that represents a dimension 2 defect in the boundary N=4 SYM theory. The effective action of the probe brane is proportional to the logarithmically divergent volume of AdS$_3$ and may thus be interpreted as computing conformal anomaly of the supersymmetric $S^2$ defect. The classical action scales as $N$. We compute the 1-loop correction to it due to quantum fluctuations of the D3 brane world-volume fields and compare the result to an earlier suggested expression for the defect anomaly. We also perform a similar analysis of a $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS M5 brane probe solution in AdS$_7 \times S^4$ with the world-volume geometry of AdS$_5 \times S^1$ that represents a dimension 4 defect in the boundary (2,0) 6d theory. Here the classical M5 brane action computes the leading order $N^2$ term in $a$-anomaly of the supersymmetric $S^4$ defect. We perform a detailed computation of the 1-loop correction to the M5 brane effective action and thus provide a prediction for the subleading constant in the $S^4$ defect $a$-anomaly coefficient.

We consider type IIB string theory on an $AdS_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold background, which should be dual to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory with two bi-fundamental hypermultiplets. The correlator of two chiral BPS operators from the twisted sector of this quiver CFT exhibits non-trivial dependence on the 't Hooft coupling $λ$ already in the planar limit. This dependence was recently determined using localisation and the expansion at large $λ$ contains a subleading contribution proportional to $ζ(3) λ^{-3/2}$. We address the question of how to reproduce this correction on the string theory side by starting with the $ζ(3) α'^3$ term in the type IIB string effective action. We find a solution of type IIB supergravity which represents a resolution of the $AdS_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold singularity and demonstrate that the relevant light twisted sector states may be identified as additional supergravity 2-form modes "wrap**" a finite 2-cycle in the resolution space. Reproducing the structure of the gauge theory result becomes more transparent in the large R-charge or BMN-like limit in which the resolved background takes a pp-wave form with the transverse space being a product of $\mathbb R^4$ and the Eguchi-Hanson space.

Here we demonstrate an analogous relation for the leading non-perturbative contribution to the large $N$ expansion of the superconformal index of the ${n}=8$ supersymmetric level-one $U(N) \times U(N)$ ABJM theory (which describes low-energy dynamics of $N$ coincident M2 branes). The roles of M2 and M5 branes get effectively interchanged. Namely, the large $N$ correction to the ABJM index is found to be given by the semiclassical partition function of quantum M5 brane wrapped on $S^1 \times S^5$ in a twisted version of AdS$_{4}\times S^{7}$ background. This effectively confirms the suggestion for the "M5 brane index" made in arXiv:2007.05213 on the basis of indirect superconformal algebra considerations.

Generalizing the type IIA string theory limit of this relation discussed in arXiv:2111.15493 and arXiv:2304.12340, we consider semiclassically quantized M2 branes in a half-supersymmetric 11d background which is a twisted product of thermal AdS$_7$ and $S^4$. We show that the leading non-perturbative term at large $N$ is reproduced precisely by the 1-loop partition function of an "instanton" M2 brane wrapped on $S^1\times S^2$ with $S^2\subset S^4$. Similarly, the (2,0) theory analog of the BPS Wilson loop expectation value is reproduced by the partition function of a "defect" M2 brane wrapped on thermal AdS$_3\subset$ AdS$_7$. We comment on a curious analogy of these results with similar computations in arXiv:2303.15207 and arXiv:2307.14112 of the partition function of quantum M2 branes in AdS$_4 \times S^7/\mathbb Z_k$ which reproduced the corresponding localization expressions in the ABJM 3d gauge theory.

Expanding Nambu-Goto action near infinitely long string vacuum one can compute scattering amplitudes of 2d massless fields representing transverse string coordinates. As was shown in arXiv:1203.1054, the resulting S-matrix is integrable, in agreement with the known free string spectrum and also with an interpretation of the static-gauge NG action as a $T\bar T$ deformation of a free massless theory. We consider a generalization of this computation to the case of a membrane, expanding its 3d action near an infinite membrane vacuum that has cylindrical $\mathbb R \times S^1$ shape (we refer to such membrane as "compactified"). Representing 3d fields as Fourier series in $S^1$ coordinate we get an effective 2d model in which the massless string modes are coupled to an infinite KK tower of massive 2d modes. We find that the resulting 2d S-matrix is not integrable already at the tree level. We also compute 1-loop scattering amplitude of massless string modes with all compactified membrane modes propagating in the loop. The result is UV finite and is a non-trivial function of the kinematic variables. In the large momentum limit or when the radius of $S^1$ is taken to infinity we recover the expression for the 1-loop scattering amplitude of the uncompactified $\mathbb R^2$ membrane. We also consider a 2d model which is the $T\bar T$ deformation to the free theory with the same massless plus infinite massive tower of modes. The corresponding 2d S-matrix is found, as expected, to be integrable.

We present a quantum M2 brane computation of the instanton prefactor in the leading non-perturbative contribution to the ABJM 3-sphere free energy at large $N$ and fixed level $k$. Using supersymmetric localization, such instanton contribution was found earlier to take the form $F^{\rm inst}(N,k) = - ({\sin^{2} \frac{2π}{k}} )^{-1} \, \exp (-2π\sqrt\frac{2N}{k}) + \cdots$ . The exponent comes from the action of an M2 brane instanton wrapped on $S^3/{\mathbb Z}_k$, which represents the M-theory uplift of the $\mathbb{C}P^1$ instanton in type IIA string theory on AdS$_4 \times \mathbb{C}P^3$. The IIA string computation of the leading large $k$ term in the instanton prefactor was recently performed in arXiv:2304.12340. Here we find that the exact value of the prefactor $({\sin^{2} \frac{2π}{k}})^{-1} $ is reproduced by the 1-loop term in the M2 brane partition function expanded near the $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_k$ instanton configuration. As in the Wilson loop example in arXiv:2303.15207, the quantum M2 brane computation is well defined and produces a finite result in exact agreement with localization.

We show that the general form of the perturbative expansions of $F$ on the two sides of the AdS/CFT duality is indeed the same. Moreover, the transcendentality properties of the coefficients in the large $N$, large $k$ expansion of $F$ match those in the corresponding M-theory or string theory expansions. To shed light on the structure of the 1-loop M-theory partition function on AdS$_{4}\times S^{7}/\mathbb{Z}_{k}$ we use the expression for the 1-loop 4-graviton scattering amplitude in the 11d supergravity. We also use the known information about the transcendental coefficients of the leading curvature invariants in the low-energy effective action of type II string theory. Matching of the remaining rational factors in the coefficients requires a precise information about currently unknown RR field strength terms in the corresponding superinvariants.

We study non-planar corrections in two special $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N)$ gauge theories that are planar-equivalent to $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory: two-nodes quiver model with equal couplings and $\mathcal N=2$ vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. We focus on two observables in these theories that admit representation in terms of localization matrix model: free energy on 4-sphere and the expectation value of half-BPS circular Wilson loop. We extend the methods developed in arXiv:2207.11475 to derive a systematical expansion of non-planar corrections to these observables at strong 't Hooft coupling constant $λ$. We show that the leading non planar corrections are given by a power series in $λ^{3/2}/N^2$ with rational coefficients. Sending $N$ and the coupling constant $λ$ to infinity with $λ^{3/2}/N^2$ kept fixed corresponds to the familiar double scaling limit in matrix models. We find that in this limit the observables in the two models are related in a remarkably simple way: the free energies differ by the factor of $2$, whereas the Wilson loop expectation values coincide. Surprisingly, these relations hold only at strong coupling, they are not valid in the weak coupling regime. We also discuss a dual string theory interpretation of the leading corrections to the free energy in the double scaling limit suggesting their relation to curvature corrections in type IIB string effective action.

We consider the localization result for the $1\over 2$-BPS circular Wilson loop expectation value $W$ in this regime, and compare it to the prediction of the M2 brane theory. The leading large $N$ exponential factor is matched as expected by the classical action of the M2 brane solution with AdS$_2\times S^1$ geometry. We show that the subleading $k$-dependent prefactor in $W$ is also exactly reproduced by the one-loop term in the partition function of the wrapped M2 brane (with all Kaluza-Klein modes included). This appears to be the first case of an exact matching of the overall numerical prefactor in the Wilson loop expectation value against the dual holographic result. It provides an example of a consistent quantum M2 brane computation, suggesting various generalizations.

Similar models appear, e.g., in the context of conformal supergravity or in the description of the crystalline phase of membranes. Considering this theory in Minkowski signature we suggest how to define Poincare-invariant scattering amplitudes by assuming that only massless oscillating (non-growing) modes appear as external states. In such shift-symmetric interacting theory there are no IR divergences despite the presence of $1/q^4$ internal propagators. We discuss how non-unitarity of this theory manifests itself at the level of the one-loop massless scattering amplitude.

This theory is unique among similar $\cal N$=2 superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\cal N$=4 SYM in that the corresponding localization matrix model has the interaction potential containing single-trace terms only. We exploit this property to show that, to any order in large $N$ expansion and an arbitrary 't Hooft coupling $λ$, the free energy and the Wilson loop satisfy Toda lattice equations. Solving these equations at strong coupling, we find remarkably simple expressions for these observables which include all corrections in $1/N$ and $1/\sqrtλ$. We also compute the leading exponentially suppressed ${\cal O}(e^{-\sqrtλ})$ corrections and consider a generalization to the case when the fundamental hypermultiplets have a non-zero mass. The string theory dual of this $\cal N$=2 gauge theory should be a particular orientifold of AdS$_5 \times S^5$ type IIB string and we discuss the string theory interpretation of the obtained strong-coupling results.

We consider strong 't Hooft coupling expansion in special four-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Various observables in these models that admit localization matrix model representation can be expressed at large $N$ in terms of a Fredholm determinant of a Bessel operator. The latter previously appeared in the study of level spacing distributions in matrix models and, more recently, in four-point correlation functions of infinitely heavy half-BPS operators in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM. We use this relation and a suitably generalized Szego-Akhiezer-Kac formula to derive the strong 't Hooft coupling expansion of the leading corrections to free energy, half-BPS circular Wilson loop, and certain correlators of chiral primaries operators in the $\mathcal N=2$ models. This substantially generalizes partial results in the literature and represents a challenge for dual string theory calculations in AdS/CFT context. We also demonstrate that the resulting strong-coupling expansions suffer from Borel singularities and require adding non-perturbative, exponentially suppressed corrections. As a byproduct of our analysis, we determine the non-perturbative correction to the above mentioned four-point correlator in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM.

In contrast to T-duality, S-duality transformations of a type IIB supergravity background do not generally preserve the classical integrability of the corresponding Green-Schwarz superstring sigma model. Nevertheless, we show that integrability is preserved in the present case. Motivated by a possibility of solving non-supersymmetric type 0 string theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background using integrability, we revisit the construction of type 0 string spectrum in some solvable examples of backgrounds with RR fluxes that are common to type IIB and type 0B theories. The presence of RR fluxes requires the use of a Green-Schwarz description for type 0 string theory. Like in flat space, the spectrum of type 0 theory can be derived from the type II theory spectrum by a $(-1)^F$ orbifolding, i.e. combining the untwisted sector where GS fermions are periodic with the twisted sector where GS fermions are antiperiodic (and projecting out all spacetime fermionic states). This construction of the type 0 spectrum may also be implemented using a Melvin background that allows to continuously interpolate between the type II and type 0 theories. As an illustration, we discuss the type 0B spectrum in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with RR 5-form flux and also in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by mixed RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes. We show that increasing the strength of the RR flux increases the value of the effective normal ordering constant (which determines the mass of the type 0 tachyon) and thus effectively decreases the momentum-space domain of instability of the ground state. We also comment on the semiclassical sector of states of type 0B theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$.

Extending earlier work, we find the two-loop term in the beta-function for the scalar coupling $ζ$ in a generalized Wilson loop operator of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory, working in the planar weak-coupling expansion. The beta-function for $ζ$ has fixed points at $ζ=\pm 1$ and $ζ=0$, corresponding respectively to the supersymmetric Wilson-Maldacena loop and to the standard Wilson loop without scalar coupling. As a consequence of our result for the beta-function, we obtain a prediction for the two-loop term in the anomalous dimension of the scalar field inserted on the standard Wilson loop. We also find a subset of higher-loop contributions (with highest powers of $ζ$ at each order in `t Hooft coupling) coming from the scalar ladder graphs determining the corresponding terms in the five-loop beta-function. We discuss the related structure of the circular Wilson loop expectation value commenting, in particular, on consistency with a 1d defect version of the F-theorem. We also compute (to two loops in the planar ladder approximation) the two-point correlators of scalars inserted on the Wilson line.

As a continuation of the study (in arXiv:2102.07696 and arXiv:2104.12625) of strong-coupling expansion of non-planar corrections in $\mathcal N=2$ 4d superconformal models we consider two special theories with gauge groups $SU(N)$ and $Sp(2N)$. They contain $N$-independent numbers of hypermultiplets in rank 2 antisymmetric and fundamental representations and are planar-equivalent to the corresponding $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theories. These $\mathcal N=2$ theories can be realised on a system of $N$ D3-branes with a finite number of D7-branes and O7-plane; the dual string theories should be particular orientifolds of $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring. Starting with the localization matrix model representation for the $\mathcal N=2$ partition function on $S^4$ we find exact differential relations between the $1/N$ terms in the corresponding free energy $F$ and the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson loop expectation value $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and also compute their large 't Hooft coupling ($λ\gg 1$) expansions. The structure of these expansions is different from the previously studied models without fundamental hypermultiplets. In the more tractable $Sp(2N)$ case we find an exact resummed expression for the leading strong coupling terms at each order in the $1/N$ expansion. We also determine the exponentially suppressed at large $λ$ contributions to the non-planar corrections to $F$ and $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and comment on their resurgence properties. We discuss dual string theory interpretation of these strong coupling expansions.

We then investigate the RG flow in the gauged $G \times G /H$ model, in particular the integrable $T^{1,1}$ model found in arXiv:2010.05573. We also construct a new class of integrable $G \times G /H$ models in the case when the subgroup $H$ is abelian. In the simplest case of $G=SU_2$, $H=U_1$ this leads to an integrable $σ$-model on the $T^{1,q}$ space (with a particular $B$-field). This model is also shown to be stable under the 2-loop RG flow, and we relate this property to its invariance under T-duality in an isometric $U_1$ direction. This $T^{1,q}$ model may be interpreted as an integrable deformation of the GMM model (of two coupled WZW theories with generic levels) away from the conformal point.

Localization approach to $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ quiver theory leads to a non-Gaussian two-matrix model representation for the expectation value of BPS circular $SU(N)$ Wilson loop $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$. We study the subleading $1/N^2$ term in the large $N$ expansion of $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ at weak and strong coupling. We concentrate on the case of the symmetric quiver with equal gauge couplings which is equivalent to the $\mathbb Z_{2}$ orbifold of the $SU(2N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory. This orbifold gauge theory should be dual to type IIB superstring in ${\rm AdS}_5\times (S^{5}/\mathbb Z_{2})$. We present a string theory argument suggesting that the $1/N^2$ term in $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ in the orbifold theory should have the same strong-coupling asymptotics $ λ^{3/2}$ as in the $\mathcal N=4$ SYM case. We support this prediction by a numerical study of the localization matrix model on the gauge theory side. We also find a relation between the $1/N^2$ term in the Wilson loop expectation value and the derivative of the free energy of the orbifold gauge theory on 4-sphere.

Motivated by a possibility of eventual matching to higher genus corrections in dual string theory we follow ar** only the leading in $1/T$ term at each order in $g_{\rm s} $ we observe that while the expansion of $\langle {\cal W} \rangle$ is a series in $g^2_{\rm s} /T$, the correlator of the Wilson loop with chiral primary operators ${\cal O}_J $ has expansion in powers of $g^2_{\rm s}/T^2$. Like in the case of $\langle {\cal W} \rangle$ where these leading terms are known to resum into an exponential of a "one-handle" contribution $\sim g^2_{\rm s} /T$, the leading strong coupling terms in $\langle {\cal W}\, {\cal O}_J \rangle$ sum up to a simple square root function of $g^2_{\rm s}/T^2$. Analogous expansions in powers of $g^2_{\rm s}/T$ are found for correlators of several coincident Wilson loops and they again have a simple resummed form. We also find similar expansions for correlators of coincident 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in the ABJM theory.

We observe that (i) starting with a classically integrable 2d $σ$-model, (ii) formally promoting its couplings $h_α$ to functions $h_α(τ)$ of 2d time, and (iii) demanding that the resulting time-dependent model also admits a Lax connection implies that $h_α(τ)$ must solve the 1-loop RG equations of the original theory with $τ$ interpreted as RG time. This provides a novel example of an 'integrability - RG flow' connection. The existence of a Lax connection suggests that these time-dependent $σ$-models may themselves be understood as integrable. We investigate this question by studying the possibility of constructing non-local and local conserved charges. Such $σ$-models with $D$-dimensional target space and time-dependent couplings subject to the RG flow naturally appear in string theory upon fixing the light-cone gauge in a $(D+2)$-dimensional conformal $σ$-model with a metric admitting a covariantly constant null Killing vector and a dilaton linear in the null coordinate.

We provide an explanation of the origin of the $\sqrt T$ prefactor based on special features of the combination of one-loop determinants appearing in the string partition function. The latter also implies a natural generalization $Z_χ\sim (\sqrt T/g_{\rm s})^χ$ to higher genus contributions with the Euler number $χ$, which is consistent with the structure of the $1/N$ corrections found on the gauge theory side.

We discuss possible application of classical double copy procedure to construction of a generalisation of the Schwarzschild metric starting from an $α'$-corrected open string analogue of Coulomb solution. The latter is approximated by a point-like charge solution of the Born-Infeld action, which represents the open string effective action for an abelian vector field in the limit when derivatives of the field strength are small. The Born-Infeld solution has a regular electric field which is constant near the origin, suggesting that corrections from derivative terms in the open string effective action may be small there. The generalization of the Schwarschild metric obtained by the double copy construction from the Born-Infeld solution looks non-singular but the corresponding curvature invariants still blow up at $r=0$. We discuss the origin of this singularity and comment on possible generalisations.

Surface operators in the 6d (2,0) theory at large $N$ have a holographic description in terms of M2 branes probing the AdS$_7 \times S^4$ M-theory background. The most symmetric, 1/2-BPS, operator is defined over a planar or spherical surface, and it preserves a 2d superconformal group. This includes, in particular, an $SO(2,2)$ subgroup of 2d conformal transformations, so that the surface operator may be viewed as a conformal defect in the 6d theory. The dual M2 brane has an AdS$_3$ induced geometry, reflecting the 2d conformal symmetry. Here we use the holographic description to extract the defect CFT data associated to the surface operator. The spectrum of transverse fluctuations of the M2 brane is found to be in one-to-one correspondence with a protected multiplet of operator insertions on the surface, which includes the displacement operator. We compute the one-loop determinants of fluctuations of the M2 brane, and extract the conformal anomaly coefficient of the spherical surface to order $N^0$. We also briefly discuss the RG flow from the non-supersymmetric to the 1/2-BPS defect operator, and its consistency with a "$b$-theorem" for the defect CFT. Starting with the M2 brane action, we then use AdS$_3$ Witten diagrams to compute the 4-point functions of the elementary bosonic insertions on the surface operator, and extract some of the defect CFT data from the OPE. The 4-point function is shown to satisfy superconformal Ward identities, and we discuss a related subsector of "twisted" scalar insertions, whose correlation functions are constrained by the residual superconformal symmetry.

Boundary correlators of elementary fields in some 2d conformal field theories defined on AdS$_2$ have a particularly simple structure. For example, the correlators of the Liouville scalar happen to be the same as the correlators of the chiral component of the stress tensor on a plane restricted to the real line. Here we show that an analogous relation is true also in the WZW model: boundary correlators of the WZW scalars have the same structure as the correlators of chiral Kač-Moody currents. This is checked at the level of the tree and one-loop Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$. We also compute some tree-level correlators in a generic $σ$-model defined on AdS$_2$ and show that they simplify only in the WZW case where an extra Kač-Moody symmetry appears. In particular, the terms in 4-point correlators having logarithmic dependence on 1d cross-ratio cancel only at the WZW point. One motivation behind this work is to learn how to compute AdS$_2$ loop corrections in 2d models with derivative interactions related to the study of correlators of operators on Wilson loops in string theory in AdS.

Following arXiv:1907.04737, we continue our investigation of the relation between the renormalizability (with finitely many couplings) and integrability in 2d $σ$-models. We focus on the "$λ$-model," an integrable model associated to a group or symmetric space and containing as special limits a (gauged) WZW model and an "interpolating model" for non-abelian duality. The parameters are the WZ level $k$ and the coupling $λ$, and the fields are $g$, valued in a group $G$, and a 2d vector $A_\pm$ in the corresponding algebra. We formulate the $λ$-model as a $σ$-model on an extended $G \times G \times G$ configuration space $(g, h, \bar{h})$, defining $h $ and $\bar{h}$ by $A_+ = h \partial_+ h^{-1}$, $A_- = \bar{h} \partial_- \bar{h}^{-1}$. Our central observation is that the model on this extended configuration space is renormalizable without any deformation, with only $λ$ running. This is in contrast to the standard $σ$-model found by integrating out $A_\pm$, whose 2-loop renormalizability is only obtained after the addition of specific finite local counterterms, resulting in a quantum deformation of the target space geometry. We compute the 2-loop $β$-function of the $λ$-model for general group and symmetric spaces, and illustrate our results on the examples of $SU(2)/U(1)$ and $SU(2)$. Similar conclusions apply in the non-abelian dual limit implying that non-abelian duality commutes with the RG flow. We also find the 2-loop $β$-function of a "squashed" principal chiral model.

The examples considered were: (i) the Liouville theory where the operator dual to the Liouville scalar in AdS$_2$ is the stress tensor; (ii) the abelian Toda theory where the operators dual to the Toda scalars are the $\mathcal W$-algebra generators; (iii) the non-abelian Toda theory where the Liouville field is dual to the stress tensor while the extra gauged WZW theory scalars are dual to non-abelian parafermionic operators. By direct Witten diagram computations in AdS$_2$ one can check that the structure of the boundary correlators is indeed consistent with the Virasoro (or higher) symmetry. Here we consider a supersymmetric generalization: the $\mathcal N=1$ superconformal Liouville theory in AdS$_2$. We start with the super Liouville theory coupled to 2d supergravity and show that a consistent restriction to rigid AdS$_2$ background requires a non-zero value of the supergravity auxiliary field and thus a modification of the Liouville potential from its familiar flat-space form. We show that the Liouville scalar and its fermionic partner are dual to the chiral half of the stress tensor and the supercurrent of the super Liouville theory on the plane. We perform tests supporting the duality by explicitly computing AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams with bosonic and fermionic loops.

It was recently observed that boundary correlators of the elementary scalar field of the Liouville theory on AdS$_2$ background are the same (up to a non-trivial proportionality coefficient) as the correlators of the chiral stress tensor of the Liouville CFT on the complex plane restricted to the real line. The same relation generalizes to the conformal abelian Toda theory: boundary correlators of Toda scalars on AdS$_2$ are directly related to the correlation functions of the chiral $\mathcal W$-symmetry generators in the Toda CFT and thus are essentially controlled by the underlying infinite-dimensional symmetry. These may be viewed as examples of AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ duality where the CFT$_1$ is the chiral half of a 2d CFT; we shall refer to this as AdS$_{2}$/CFT$^{1/2}_{2}$. In this paper we demonstrate that this duality applies also to the non-abelian Toda theory containing a Liouville scalar coupled to a 2d $σ$-model originating from the $SL(2, \mathbb R)/U(1)$ gauged WZW model. Here the Liouville scalar is again dual to the chiral stress tensor $T$ while the other two scalars are dual to the parafermionic operators $V^\pm$ of the non-abelian Toda CFT. We explicitly check the duality at the next-to-leading order in the large central charge expansion by matching the chiral CFT correlators of $(T, V^+,V^-)$ (computed using a free field representation) with the boundary correlators of the three Toda scalars given by the tree-level and one-loop Witten diagrams in AdS$_{2}$.

We consider the Liouville theory in fixed Euclidean AdS$_2$ background. Expanded near the minimum of the potential the elementary field has mass squared 2 and (assuming the standard Dirichlet b.c.) corresponds to a dimension 2 operator at the boundary. We provide strong evidence for the conjecture that the boundary correlators of the Liouville field are the same as the correlators of the holomorphic stress tensor (or the Virasoro generator with the same central charge) on a half-plane or a disc restricted to the boundary. This relation was first observed at the leading semiclassical order (tree-level Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$) in arXiv:1902.10536 and here we demonstrate its validity also at the one-loop level. We also discuss arguments that may lead to its general proof.

Correlators of local operators inserted on a straight Wilson loop in a conformal gauge theory have the structure of a one-dimensional "defect" CFT. As was shown in arXiv:1706.00756, in the case of supersymmetric Wilson-Maldacena loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM one can compute the strong-coupling contributions to 4-point correlators of operator insertions by starting with the AdS$_5 \times S^5$ string action expanded near the AdS$_2$ minimal surface and evaluating the corresponding AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams. We perform the analogous computations in the non-supersymmetric case of the standard Wilson loop with no coupling to the scalars. The corresponding non-supersymmetric "defect" CFT$_1$ has an unbroken $SO(6)$ global symmetry. The elementary bosonic operators (6 SYM scalars and 3 components of the SYM field strength) are dual respectively to the $S^5$ embedding coordinates and AdS$_5$ coordinates transverse to the minimal surface ending on the line at the boundary. The $SO(6)$ symmetry is preserved provided the 5-sphere coordinates satisfy Neumann boundary conditions (as opposed to Dirichlet in the supersymmetric case); one should then integrate over the $S^5$. The massless $S^5$ fluctuations have logarithmic propagator, corresponding to the boundary scalar operator having dimension $Δ= \frac{5}{\sqrtλ} + \ldots$ at strong coupling. The resulting functions of 1d cross-ratio in the 4-point functions have a more complicated structure than in the supersymmetric case, involving polylogs (Li$_3$ and Li$_2$). We also discuss consistency with the operator product expansion which allows extracting the leading strong coupling corrections to the anomalous dimensions of the operators appearing in the intermediate channels.

Motivated by the search for new integrable string models, we study the properties of massless tree-level S-matrices for 2d sigma models expanded near the trivial vacuum. We find that, in contrast to the standard massive case, there is no apparent link between massless S-matrices and integrability: in well-known integrable models the tree-level massless S-matrix fails to factorize and exhibits particle production. Such tree-level particle production is found in several classically integrable models: the principal chiral model, its classically equivalent "pseudo-dual" model, its non-abelian dual model and also the SO(N+1)/SO(N) coset model. The connection to integrability may, in principle, be restored if one expands near a non-trivial vacuum with massive excitations. We discuss IR ambiguities in 2d massless tree-level amplitudes and their resolution using either a small mass parameter or the i epsilon-regularization. In general, these ambiguities can lead to anomalies in the equivalence of the S-matrix under field redefinitions, and may be linked to the observed particle production in integrable models. We also comment on the transformation of massless S-matrices under sigma model T-duality, comparing the standard and the "doubled" formulations (with T-duality covariance built into the latter).

Supersymmetric partition function of $\mathcal N=1$ superconformal theories on $S^1_β \times S^3$ is related to the superconformal index receiving contributions from short representations. The leading coefficients in the small $β$ (high "temperature") expansion of the index were previously related to the conformal anomaly coefficients of the theory. Assumptions underlying universality of these relations were tested only for simplest low-spin unitary multiplets. Here we consider examples of higher derivative non-unitary $\mathcal N=1$ multiplets that naturally appear in the context of extended conformal supergravities and compute their superconformal index. We compare the coefficients in the small $β$ expansion of the index with those proposed earlier for unitary multiplets and suggest some modifications that should apply universally to all types of theories. We also comment on the structure of subleading terms and the case of $\mathcal N=4$ conformal supergravity.

We develop a formalism for describing the most general notion of tree-level scattering amplitudes in 4d conformal higher spin theory. As conformal higher spin fields obey higher-derivative equations of motion, there are many distinct on-shell external states which may contribute to their scattering, some of which grow polynomially with time, leading to ill-defined amplitudes. We characterize the set of admissible scattering states which produce finite tree amplitudes, noting that there are more such states than just standard massless higher spins obeying two-derivative equations of motion. We use conformal gravity as a prime example, where the set of scattering states includes the usual Einstein graviton and a `ghost' massless spin 1 particle. An extension of the usual spinor helicity formalism allows us to encode these scattering states efficiently in terms of `twistor-spinors'. This leads to compact momentum space expressions for all finite tree-level 3-point amplitudes of conformal higher spin theory. While some of these 3-point amplitudes vanish (including all those with only standard two-derivative higher spin external states), there are many others which are non-vanishing. We also comment on the generalization to scattering of conformal higher spins in AdS$_4$.

There was a missing prefactor ~ lambda^(-3/4) which could be attributed to the unknown normalization of the string path integral measure. Here we resolve this problem by computing the ratio of the string partition functions corresponding to the circular Wilson loop and the special 1/4-supersymmetric latitude Wilson loop. The fact that the latter has a trivial expectation value in the gauge theory allows us to relate the prefactor to the contribution of the three zero modes of the "transverse" fluctuation operator in the 5-sphere directions.

Treating the 5d gauge vector as a background field, we compute the divergent part of the corresponding one-loop effective action which has the $(DF)^2+F^3$ structure and compare it with similar contributions from other 6d fields. Building on our previous work arXiv:1712.06874 we consider one-parameter Polchinski-Sully generalization of the Wilson-Maldacena (WM) loops in planar N=4 SYM theory. This breaks local supersymmetry of WM loop and leads to running of the deformation parameter $ζ$. We compute the three-loop ladder diagram contribution to the expectation value of the circular loop which gives the full answer for large $ζ$. The limit $ζ\gg 1$, $λζ^2=$ fixed in which the expectation value is determined by the Gaussian adjoint scalar path integral might be exactly solvable despite the lack of global supersymmetry. We study similar generalization of the 1/4-BPS "latitude" WM loop which depends on two parameters (in addition to the 't Hooft coupling $λ$). One may also introduce another supersymmetry-breaking parameter -- the winding number of the scalar coupling circle. We find the two-loop expression for the expectation value of the associated loop by combining the ladder diagram contribution with an indirect determination of the non-ladder contribution using 1d defect CFT perturbation theory.

We review the question of quantum consistency of N=4 conformal supergravity in 4 dimensions. The UV divergences and anomalies of the standard ("minimal") conformal supergravity where the complex scalar $φ$ is not coupled to the Weyl graviton kinetic term can be cancelled by coupling this theory to N=4 super Yang-Mills with gauge group of dimension 4. The same turns out to be true also for the "non-minimal" N=4 conformal supergravity with the action (recently constructed in arXiv:1609.09083) depending on an arbitrary holomorphic function $f(φ)$. The special case of the "non-minimal" conformal supergravity with $f= e^{2φ}$ appears in the twistor-string theory. We show that divergences and anomalies do not depend on the form of the function $f$ and thus can be cancelled just as in the "minimal" $f=1$ case by coupling the theory to four N=4 vector multiplets.

We consider the one-parameter generalization $S^4_q$ of 4-sphere with a conical singularity due to identification $τ=τ+ 2 πq$ in one isometric angle. We compute the value of the spectral zeta-function at zero $z(q) = ζ(0, q)$ that controls the coefficient of the logarithmic UV divergence of the one-loop partition function on $S^4_q$. While the value of the conformal anomaly a-coefficient is proportional to $z(1)$, we argue that in general the second $c = C_T$ anomaly coefficient is related to a particular combination of the second and first derivatives of $z(q) $ at $q=1$. The universality of this relation for $C_T$ is supported also by examples in 6 and 2 dimensions. We use it to compute the c-coefficient for conformal higher spins finding that it coincides with the "$r=-1$" value of the one-parameter Ansatz suggested in arXiv:1309.0785. Like the sums of $a_s$ and $c_s$ coefficients, the regularized sum of $z_s(q)$ over the whole tower of conformal higher spins $s=1,2, ...$ is found to vanish, implying UV finiteness on $S^4_q$ and thus also the vanishing of the associated Re'nyi entropy. Similar conclusions are found to apply to the standard 2-derivative massless higher spin tower. We also present an independent computation of the full set of conformal anomaly coefficients of the 6d Weyl graviton theory defined by a particular combination of the three 6d Weyl invariants that has a (2,0) supersymmetric extension.

These correlation functions are constrained by the 1d superconformal symmetry preserved by the 1/2-BPS Wilson line and define a defect CFT$_1$ living on the line. At strong coupling, a set of elementary operator insertions with protected scaling dimensions correspond to fluctuations of the dual fundamental string in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ ending on the line at the boundary and can be thought of as light fields propagating on the AdS$_2$ worldsheet. We use AdS/CFT techniques to compute the tree-level AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams describing the strong coupling limit of the four-point functions of the dual operator insertions. Using the OPE, we also extract the leading strong coupling corrections to the anomalous dimensions of the "two-particle" operators built out of elementary excitations. In the case of the circular Wilson loop, we match our results for the 4-point functions of a special type of scalar insertions to the prediction of localization to 2d Yang-Mills theory.

These relations were determined up to one free parameter $ξ$ and its value was then conjectured using some additional assumptions. A different value for $ξ$ was recently suggested in arXiv:1702.03518 using a different method. Here we confirm that this latter value is indeed the correct one by providing an additional data point: the Weyl anomaly coefficient $c_3$ for the higher derivative (1,0) superconformal 6d vector multiplet. This multiplet contains the 4-derivative conformal gauge vector, 3-derivative fermion and 2-derivative scalar. We find the corresponding value of $c_3$ which is proportional to the coefficient $C_T$ in the 2-point function of stress tensor using its relation to the first derivative of the Renyi entropy or the second derivative of the free energy on the product of thermal circle and 5d hyperbolic space. We present some general results of computation of the Renyi entropy and $C_T$ from the partition function on $S^1 \times \mathbb H^{d-1}$ for higher derivative conformal scalars, spinors and vectors in even dimensions. Simplest examples of AdS/CFT duality correspond to free CFTs in d dimensions with fields in vector or adjoint representation of an internal symmetry group dual in the large N limit to a theory of massless or massless plus massive higher spins in AdS_{d+1}. One may also study generalizations when conformal fields belong to higher dimensional representations, i.e. carry more than two internal symmetry indices. Here we consider the case of the 3-fundamental ("3-plet") representation. One motivation is a conjectured connection to multiple M5-brane theory: heuristic arguments suggest that it may be related to an (interacting) CFT of 6d (2,0) tensor multiplets in 3-plet representation of large N symmetry group that has an AdS_7 dual. We compute the singlet partition function Z on S^1 x S^{d-1} for a free field in 3-plet representation of U(N) and analyse its novel large N behaviour. The large N limit of the low temperature expansion of Z which is convergent in the vector and adjoint cases here is only asymptotic, reflecting the much faster growth of the number of singlet operators with dimension, indicating a phase transition at very low temperature. Indeed, while the critical temperatures in the vector (T_c ~ N^a, a >0) and adjoint (T_c ~ 1) cases are finite, we find that in the 3-plet case T_c ~ 1/ log N, i.e. it approaches zero at large N. We discuss some details of large N solution for the eigenvalue distribution. Similar conclusions apply to higher p-plet representations of U(N) or O(N) and also to the free p-tensor theories invariant under [U(N)]^p or [O(N)]^p starting with p=3.

The action is defined as an induced one from path integral of a conformal scalar field in curved background coupled to higher spin fields. We analyse in detail the dependence of the quadratic part of the induced action on the spin 1 and spin 3 fields, determining the presence of a curvature-dependent mixed spin 1 - spin 3 term. One consequence is that the pure spin 3 kinetic term cannot be gauge-invariant on its own beyond the leading term in small curvature expansion. We also compute the non-zero contribution of the 1-3 mixing term to the conformal anomaly c-coefficient. One is thus to determine all such mixing terms before addressing the question of possible vanishing of the total c-coefficient in the conformal higher spin theory.

We consider the minimal interacting theory of a single tower of spin j=0,2,4,... massless Fronsdal fields in flat space for which consistent covariant cubic interaction vertices are known. We address the question of constraints on possible quartic interaction vertices imposed by the condition of on-shell gauge invariance of the tree-level four-point scattering amplitudes involving three spin 0 and one spin j particle. We find that these constraints admit a local solution for quartic 000j interaction term in the action only for j=2 and j=4. We determine the non-local terms in four-vertices required in the case of spin j greater than 4 and show that these non-localities can be interpreted as a result of integrating out a tower of auxiliary ghost-like massless higher spin fields in an extended theory with a local action. We also consider the conformal off-shell extension of the Einstein theory and show that its perturbative expansion is the same as of the the non-local action resulting from integrating out the trace of the graviton field from the Einstein action. Motivated by this example, we conjecture the existence of a similar conformal off-shell extension of a massless higher spin theory that may be related to the above extended theory and may have the same infinite-dimensional symmetry as the conformal higher spin theory and thus may lead to a trivial S matrix.
