The recording of planetary magnetic fields is often attributed to uniformly-magnetised nanoscopic iron oxides, called single-domain (SD). Yet, the main magnetic constituents of rocks are more complex, non-uniformly magnetised grains in single or multi-vortex states. We know little about their behaviour due to limitations in defining their precise shape and internal magnetic structure. We propose a novel approach combining non-destructive synchrotron-based ptychographic nanotomography with micromagnetic modelling to explore the magnetic stability of remanence-bearing minerals. Applied to a microscopic rock sample, we identified hundreds of nanoscopic grains of magnetite/maghemite with diverse morphologies. For some grains, shape irregularities near the transition from SD to the single-vortex state allow for multiple domain states, some unstable and unable to record the field for significant periods. Additionally, some other grains exhibit temperature-dependent occupancy probabilities, potentially hampering experiments to recover the intensity of past magnetic fields.

This paper focuses on the simulation of 6G systems that rely on a 3D representation of the environment, as captured by cameras and other sensors. We present new strategies for obtaining paired MIMO channels and multimodal data. We also discuss trade-offs between speed and accuracy when generating channels via ray tracing. We finally provide beam selection simulation results to assess the proposed methodology.

We also discuss tradeoffs between speed and accuracy when generating channels via ray-tracing. Existing table question answering datasets contain abundant factual questions that primarily evaluate the query and schema comprehension capability of a system, but they fail to include questions that require complex reasoning and integration of information due to the constraint of the associated short-form answers. To address these issues and to demonstrate the full challenge of table question answering, we introduce FeTaQA, a new dataset with 10K Wikipedia-based {table, question, free-form answer, supporting table cells} pairs. FeTaQA yields a more challenging table question answering setting because it requires generating free-form text answers after retrieval, inference, and integration of multiple discontinuous facts from a structured knowledge source. Unlike datasets of generative QA over text in which answers are prevalent with copies of short text spans from the source, answers in our dataset are human-generated explanations involving entities and their high-level relations. We provide two benchmark methods for the proposed task: a pipeline method based on semantic-parsing-based QA systems and an end-to-end method based on large pretrained text generation models, and show that FeTaQA poses a challenge for both methods.

Geomagnetic field reversals remain as one of the most intriguing problems in geophysics and are regarded as chaotic processes resulting from a dynamo mechanism. In this article, we use the polarity scale data set for the last 170 Myr from the ocean's floor to provide robust evidence for an inverse relationship between the complexity of sequences of consecutive polarity intervals and the respective reversal rate. In particular the variability of sequences of polarity intervals reaches a minimum in the mid-Jurassic when a maximum reversal rate is found. This raises the possibility of epochs of high regularity in the reversal process geodynamo. To shed light on this process, We investigate the transition from regular to chaotic regime in a minimal model for geomagnetic reversals. We show that even in a chaotic regime, near to the transition the system retains the signature of regular behavior. We suggest that geomagnetic reversals have switched between different degrees of irregularity, with a dominant periodicity around 70 kyrs that results from a "ghost" limit cycle.

The current paradigm for protein structure determination by NMR spectroscopy has thus far been based on collecting distance restrains between pairs of nuclei in the form of nuclear Overhauser enhancements (NOE). These, have in some circumstances been supplemented with other information sources such as paramagnetic relaxation enhancements or residual dipolar couplings. Here, we report for the first time a protein structure determination by NMR without the use of NOEs. The protein PioC from Rhodopseu-domonas palustris TIE-1 is an HIPIP where the 4Fe4S cluster is paramagnetic and provides the source of Paramagnetic Relaxation Enhancements (PRE) used as alternative distance constraints. Comparison of the family of structures obtained by NOE structural restraints, with that obtained by PRE and with the family of structures obtained by combining NOEs and PREs reveals that the pairwise RMSD between them are similar and comparable with the precision within each family. This work sets the stage for the structural characterization of small and dynamic paramagnetic metalloproteins opening a new paradigm in the use of NMR in structural biology.

Millimeter waves is one of 5G networks strategies to achieve high bit rates. Measurement campaigns with these signals are difficult and require expensive equipment. In order to generate realistic data this paper refines a methodology for virtual measurements of 5G channels, which combines a simulation of urban mobility with a ray-tracing simulator. The urban mobility simulator is responsible for controlling mobility, positioning pedestrians and vehicles throughout each scene while the ray-tracing simulator is repeatedly invoked, simulating the interactions between receivers and transmitters. The orchestration among both simulators is done using a Python software. To check how the realism can influence the computational cost, it was made a numerical analyze between the number of faces and the simulation time.

It can help to save costs since it allows the use of virtualized base stations instead of physically deployment in different areas. However, the creation and management of virtual base stations pools is not trivial and introduces new challenges to C-RAN deployment. This paper reports a method to orchestrate and manage a container-based C-RAN. We used several instances of the OpenAirInterface software running on Docker containers, and orchestrated them using Kubernetes. We demonstrate that using Kubernetes it is possible to dynamically scale remote radio heads (RRHs) and baseband units (BBUs) according to requirements of the network and parameters such as the server resources usage.

The use of higher frequencies and MIMO is important in many 5G use cases. However, the available channel models for millimeter waves (mmWaves) currently demand investigation and the number of measurements is still limited. Using simulators is a current practice in mmWave MIMO research and ray tracing is considered one of the most accurate techniques. Due to the relatively long time of ray tracing simulations, it is common practice to adopt a simplified simulation methodology in which omnidirectional antennas are simulated and, later, the results are used together with a geometrical model to consider that antenna arrays were used. This allows flexibility and decreases the overall time spent with simulations. This paper investigates the corresponding assumptions and how accurate are the results of the simplified methodology when compared to effectively using antenna arrays in the ray tracing simulation. The preliminary results indicate that the distance between transmitter and receiver needs to be sufficiently large.

The geomagnetic field's dipole undergoes polarity reversals in irregular time intervals. Particularly long periods (of the order of $10^7$yrs) without reversals, named superchrons, have occurred at least three times in history. We provide observational evidence for high non-Gaussianity in the vicinity of a transition to and from a geomagnetic superchron, consisting of a sharp increase in high-order moments (skewness and kurtosis) of the dipole's distribution. Such increase in the moments is a universal feature of crisis-induced intermittency in low-dimensional dynamical systems undergoing global bifurcations. This suggests temporal variation of the underlying parameters of the physical system. Through a low dimensional system that models the geomagnetic reversals we show that the increase in the high-order moments during transitions to geomagnetic superchrons is caused by the progressive destruction of global periodic orbits exhibiting both polarities as the system approaches a merging bifurcation. We argue that the non-gaussianity in this system is caused by the redistribution of the attractor around local cycles as global ones are destroyed.
