We show that a competitive equilibrium always exists in combinatorial auctions with anonymous graphical valuations and pricing, using discrete geometry. This is an intuitive and easy-to-construct class of valuations that can model both complementarity and substitutes, and to our knowledge, it is the first class besides gross substitutes that have guaranteed competitive equilibrium. We prove through counter-examples that our result is tight, and we give explicit algorithms for constructive competitive pricing vectors. We also give extensions to multi-unit combinatorial auctions (also known as product-mix auctions). Combined with theorems on graphical valuations and pricing equilibrium of Candogan, Ozdagar and Parrilo, our results indicate that quadratic pricing is a highly practical method to run combinatorial auctions.

The classical Marcinkiewicz theorem states that if an entire characteristic function $Ψ$ of a non-degenerate real-valued random variable $X$ is of the form $\exp(P(u))$ for some polynomial $P$, then $X$ has to be a Gaussian. In this work, we obtain a broad, quantitative extension of this framework in several directions, establish central limit theorems (CLTs) with explicit rates of convergence, and demonstrate Gaussian fluctuations in continuous spin systems and general classes of point processes. In particular, we obtain quantitative decay estimates on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance between $X$ and a Gaussian under the condition that $Ψ$ does not vanish only on a bounded disk. This leads to quantitative CLTs applicable to very general and possibly strongly dependent random systems. In spite of the general applicability, our rates for the CLT match the classic Berry-Esseen bounds for independent sums up to a log factor. We implement this programme for two important classes of models in probability and statistical physics. First, we extend to the setting of continuous spins a popular paradigm for obtaining CLTs for discrete spin systems that is based on the theory of Lee-Yang zeros, focussing in particular on the XY model, Heisenberg ferromagnets and generalised Ising models. Secondly, we establish Gaussian fluctuations for linear statistics of so-called $α$-determinantal processes for $α\in \mathbb{R}$ (including the usual determinantal, Poisson and permanental processes) under very general conditions, including in particular higher dimensional settings where structural alternatives such as random matrix techniques are not available. Our applications demonstrate the significance of having to control the characteristic function only on a (small) disk, and lead to CLTs which, to the best of our knowledge, are not known in generality.

Temporal action proposal generation is an essential and challenging task that aims at localizing temporal intervals containing human actions in untrimmed videos. Most of existing approaches are unable to follow the human cognitive process of understanding the video context due to lack of attention mechanism to express the concept of an action or an agent who performs the action or the interaction between the agent and the environment. Based on the action definition that a human, known as an agent, interacts with the environment and performs an action that affects the environment, we propose a contextual Agent-Environment Network. Our proposed contextual AEN involves (i) agent pathway, operating at a local level to tell about which humans/agents are acting and (ii) environment pathway operating at a global level to tell about how the agents interact with the environment. Comprehensive evaluations on 20-action THUMOS-14 and 200-action ActivityNet-1.3 datasets with different backbone networks, i.e C3D and SlowFast, show that our method robustly exhibits outperformance against state-of-the-art methods regardless of the employed backbone network.

Four excited $Ω_c^0$ baryons are observed in the $Ξ_c^+ K^-$ mass projection of the $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ decays with the significance of each exceeding five standard deviations. They coincide with the states previously observed in prompt \proton\proton and $e^+e^-$ production. Relative production rates, masses and natural widths of the states are measured, and a test of spin hypotheses is performed. Moreover, the branching ratio of $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ is measured relative to the $Ω_b^- \to Ω_c^0 π^-$ decay mode and a precise measurement of the $Ω_b^-$ mass of \mbox{$6044.3 \pm 1.2 \pm 1.1^{\,+0.19}_{\,-0.22}\,\mathrm{MeV}$} is obtained.

The field of two-dimensional materials has been develo** at an impressive pace, with atomically thin crystals of an increasing number of different compounds that have become available, together with techniques enabling their assembly into functional heterostructures. The strategy to detect these atomically thin crystals has however remained unchanged since the discovery of graphene. Such an absence of evolution is starting to pose problems because for many of the 2D materials of current interest the optical contrast provided by the commonly used detection procedure is insufficient to identify the presence of individual monolayers or to determine unambiguously the thickness of atomically thin multilayers. Here we explore an alternative detection strategy, in which the enhancement of optical contrast originates from the use of optically inhomogeneous substrates, leading to diffusively reflected light. Owing to its peculiar polarization properties and to its angular distribution, diffusively reflected light allows a strong contrast enhancement to be achieved through the implementation of suitable illumination-detection schemes. We validate this conclusion by carrying out a detailed quantitative analysis of optical contrast, which fully reproduces our experimental observations on over 60 WSe$_2$ mono-, bi-, and trilayers. We further validate the proposed strategy by extending our analysis to atomically thin phosphorene, InSe, and graphene crystals. Our conclusion is that the use of diffusively reflected light to detect and identify atomically thin layers is an interesting alternative to the common detection scheme based on Fabry-Perot interference, because it enables atomically thin layers to be detected on substrates others than the commonly used Si/SiO$_2$, and it may offer higher sensitivity depending on the specific 2D material considered.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for RF wireless power transfer (WPT) as it is capable of beamforming and beam focusing without using active and power-hungry components. In this paper, we propose a multi-tile RIS beam scanning (MTBS) algorithm for powering up internet-of-things (IoT) devices. Considering the hardware limitations of the IoT devices, the proposed algorithm requires only power information to enable the beam focusing capability of the RIS. Specifically, we first divide the RIS into smaller RIS tiles. Then, all RIS tiles and the phased array transmitter are iteratively scanned and optimized to maximize the receive power. We elaborately analyze the proposed algorithm and build a simulator to verify it. Furthermore, we have built a real-life testbed of RIS-aided WPT systems to validate the algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed MTBS algorithm can properly control the transmission phase of the transmitter and the reflection phase of the RIS to focus the power at the receiver. Consequently, after executing the algorithm, about 20 dB improvement of the receive power is achieved compared to the case that all unit cells of the RIS are in OFF state. By experiments, we confirm that the RIS with the MTBS algorithm can greatly enhance the power transfer efficiency.

Gesture recognition is a fundamental tool to enable novel interaction paradigms in a variety of application scenarios like Mixed Reality environments, touchless public kiosks, entertainment systems, and more. Recognition of hand gestures can be nowadays performed directly from the stream of hand skeletons estimated by software provided by low-cost trackers (Ultraleap) and MR headsets (Hololens, Oculus Quest) or by video processing software modules (e.g. Google Mediapipe). Despite the recent advancements in gesture and action recognition from skeletons, it is unclear how well the current state-of-the-art techniques can perform in a real-world scenario for the recognition of a wide set of heterogeneous gestures, as many benchmarks do not test online recognition and use limited dictionaries. This motivated the proposal of the SHREC 2021: Track on Skeleton-based Hand Gesture Recognition in the Wild. For this contest, we created a novel dataset with heterogeneous gestures featuring different types and duration. These gestures have to be found inside sequences in an online recognition scenario. This paper presents the result of the contest, showing the performances of the techniques proposed by four research groups on the challenging task compared with a simple baseline method.

Starting from the stochastic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation, a multidimensional KdV type equation on a hypercubic lattice, we provide a derivation of the 3-wave kinetic equation. We show that the two point correlation function can be asymptotically expressed as the solution of the 3-wave kinetic equation at the kinetic limit under very general assumptions: the initial condition is out of equilibrium, the dimension is $d\ge 2$, the smallness of the nonlinearity $λ$ is allowed to be independent of the size of the lattice, the weak noise is chosen not to compete with the weak nonlinearity and not to inject energy into the equation. Unlike the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, for which such a general result is commonly expected without the noise, the kinetic description of the deterministic lattice ZK equation is unlikely to happen. One of the key reasons is that the dispersion relation of the lattice ZK equation leads to a singular manifold, on which not only $3$-wave interactions but also all $m$-wave interactions ($m\ge3$) are allowed to happen. This phenomenon has been first observed by Lukkarinen \cite{lukkarinen2007asymptotics} as a counterexample for which one of the main tools to derive kinetic equations from wave equations (the suppression of crossings) fails to hold true. To the best of our knowledge, the work provides the first rigorous derivation of nonlinear 3-wave kinetic equations. Also this is the first derivation for wave kinetic equations in the lattice setting and out-of-equilibrium.

Despite a large number of existing works, solving the data association problem in any MC-MOT pipeline is arguably one of the most challenging tasks. Develo** a robust MC-MOT system, however, is still highly challenging due to many practical issues such as inconsistent lighting conditions, varying object movement patterns, or the trajectory occlusions of the objects between the cameras. To address these problems, this work, therefore, proposes a new Dynamic Graph Model with Link Prediction (DyGLIP) approach to solve the data association task. Compared to existing methods, our new model offers several advantages, including better feature representations and the ability to recover from lost tracks during camera transitions. Moreover, our model works gracefully regardless of the overlap** ratios between the cameras. Experimental results show that we outperform existing MC-MOT algorithms by a large margin on several practical datasets. Notably, our model works favorably on online settings but can be extended to an incremental approach for large-scale datasets.

The natural gradient is an essential component of efficient VB estimation, but it is prohibitively computationally expensive in high dimensions. We demonstrate that the problem setup fulfills the conditions required for quantum matrix inversion to deliver computational efficiency. The method works with a broad range of statistical models and does not require special-purpose or simplified variational distributions.

Desiccation cracking in clayey soils occurs when they lose moisture, leading to an increase in their compressibility and hydraulic conductivity and hence significant reduction of soil strength. The prediction of desiccation cracking in soils is challenging due to the lack of insights into the complex coupled hydro-mechanical process at the grain scale. In this paper, a new hybrid discrete-continuum numerical framework, capable of capturing hydro-mechanical behaviour of soil at both grain and macro scales, is proposed for predicting desiccation cracking in clayey soil. In this framework, a soil layer is represented by an assembly of DEM particles, each occupies an equivalent continuum space and carries physical properties governing unsaturated flow. These particles move freely in the computational space following the discrete element method (DEM), while their contact network and the continuum mixture theory are used to model the unsaturated flow. The dependence of particle-to-particle contact behaviour on water content is represented by a cohesive-frictional contact model, whose material properties are governed by the water content. In parallel with the theoretical development is a series of experiments on 3D soil desiccation cracking to determine essential properties and provide data for the validation of mechanical and physical behaviour. Very good agreement in both physical behaviour (e.g. evolution of water content) and mechanical behaviour (e.g. occurrence and development of cracks, and distribution of compressive and tensile strains) demonstrates that the proposed framework is capable of capturing the hydro-mechanical behaviour of soil during desiccation. The capability of the proposed framework facilitates numerical experiments for insights into the hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils that have not been possible before.

A measurement of mixing and $C\!P$ violation in neutral charm mesons is performed using data reconstructed in proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4$\textrm{fb}^{-1}$. A total of $30.6$ million $D^{0}\rightarrow K^{0}_{\mathrm{S}}π^{+}π^{-}$ decays are analyzed using a method optimized for the measurement of the mass difference between neutral charm-meson eigenstates. Allowing for $C\!P$ violation in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, the mass and decay-width differences are measured to be $x_{C\!P} = \left[3.97\pm0.46\textrm{(stat)}\pm 0.29\textrm{(syst)}\right]\times10^{-3}$ and $y_{C\!P} = \left[4.59\pm1.20\textrm{(stat)}\pm0.85\textrm{(syst)}\right]\times10^{-3}$, respectively. The $C\!P$-violating parameters are measured as $Δx = \left[-0.27\pm0.18\textrm{(stat)}\pm0.01\textrm{(syst)}\right]\times10^{-3}$ and $Δy = \left[0.20\pm0.36\textrm{(stat)}\pm0.13\textrm{(syst)}\right]\times10^{-3}$. This is the first observation of a nonzero mass difference in the $D^0$ meson system, with a significance exceeding seven standard deviations. The data are consistent with $C\!P$ symmetry, and improve existing constraints on the associated parameters.

In this paper, we propose Contextual Guided Segmentation (CGS) framework for video instance segmentation in three passes. In the first pass, i.e., preview segmentation, we propose Instance Re-Identification Flow to estimate main properties of each instance (i.e., human/non-human, rigid/deformable, known/unknown category) by propagating its preview mask to other frames. In the second pass, i.e., contextual segmentation, we introduce multiple contextual segmentation schemes. For human instance, we develop skeleton-guided segmentation in a frame along with object flow to correct and refine the result across frames. For non-human instance, if the instance has a wide variation in appearance and belongs to known categories (which can be inferred from the initial mask), we adopt instance segmentation. If the non-human instance is nearly rigid, we train FCNs on synthesized images from the first frame of a video sequence. In the final pass, i.e., guided segmentation, we develop a novel fined-grained segmentation method on non-rectangular regions of interest (ROIs). The natural-shaped ROI is generated by applying guided attention from the neighbor frames of the current one to reduce the ambiguity in the segmentation of different overlap** instances. Forward mask propagation is followed by backward mask propagation to further restore missing instance fragments due to re-appeared instances, fast motion, occlusion, or heavy deformation. Finally, instances in each frame are merged based on their depth values, together with human and non-human object interaction and rare instance priority. Experiments conducted on the DAVIS Test-Challenge dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework. We achieved the 3rd consistently in the DAVIS Challenges 2017-2019 with 75.4%, 72.4%, and 78.4% in terms of global score, region similarity, and contour accuracy, respectively.

The $CP$-violating phase and lifetime parameters of the $B^0_s$ system are measured to be $φ_s=0.00\pm0.28\pm0.07$ rad, $ΔΓ_s=0.115\pm0.045\pm0.011$ ps$^{-1}$ and $Γ_s=0.608\pm0.018\pm0.012$ ps$^{-1}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with previous measurements in other channels and with the Standard Model predictions.

At ambient pressure, lithium molybdenum purple bronze (Li0.9Mo6O17) is a quasi-one dimensional solid in which the anisotropic crystal structure and the linear dispersion of the underlying bands produced by electronic correlations possibly bring about a rare experimental realization of Tomomaga-Luttinger liquid physics. It is also the sole member of the broader purple molybdenum bronzes family where a Peierls instability has not been identified at low temperatures. The present study reports a pressure-induced series of phase transitions between 0 and 12 GPa. These transitions are strongly reflected in infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The most dramatic effect seen in optical conductivity is the metallization of the c-axis, concomitant to the decrease of conductivity along the b-axis. This indicates that high pressure drives the material away from its quasi-one dimensional behavior at ambient pressure. While the first pressure-induced structure of the series is resolved, the identification of the underlying mechanisms driving the dimensional change in the physics remains a challenge.

The $D^0$ meson is required to originate from a $D^*(2010)^+ \to D^0 π^+$ decay, such that its flavour at production is identified by the charge of the accompanying pion. The slope of the time-dependent asymmetry of the decay rates of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons into the final states under consideration is measured to be $ΔY_{K^+ K^-} = (-2.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-4}$, $ΔY_{π^+ π^-} = (-4.0 \pm 2.8 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are compatible with the conservation of the charge-parity symmetry at the level of 2 standard deviations and improve the precision by nearly a factor of two.

Camouflaged objects attempt to conceal their texture into the background and discriminating them from the background is hard even for human beings. The main objective of this paper is to explore the camouflaged object segmentation problem, namely, segmenting the camouflaged object(s) for a given image. This problem has not been well studied in spite of a wide range of potential applications including the preservation of wild animals and the discovery of new species, surveillance systems, search-and-rescue missions in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or hurricanes. This paper addresses a new challenging problem of camouflaged object segmentation. To address this problem, we provide a new image dataset of camouflaged objects for benchmarking purposes. In addition, we propose a general end-to-end network, called the Anabranch Network, that leverages both classification and segmentation tasks. Different from existing networks for segmentation, our proposed network possesses the second branch for classification to predict the probability of containing camouflaged object(s) in an image, which is then fused into the main branch for segmentation to boost up the segmentation accuracy. Extensive experiments conducted on the newly built dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our network using various fully convolutional networks. \url{https://sites.google.com/view/ltnghia/research/camo}

Transfer learning is an important step to extract meaningful features and overcome the data limitation in the medical Visual Question Answering (VQA) task. However, most of the existing medical VQA methods rely on external data for transfer learning, while the meta-data within the dataset is not fully utilized. In this paper, we present a new multiple meta-model quantifying method that effectively learns meta-annotation and leverages meaningful features to the medical VQA task. Our proposed method is designed to increase meta-data by auto-annotation, deal with noisy labels, and output meta-models which provide robust features for medical VQA tasks. Extensively experimental results on two public medical VQA datasets show that our approach achieves superior accuracy in comparison with other state-of-the-art methods, while does not require external data to train meta-models.

This paper presents the methods that have participated in the SHREC 2021 contest on retrieval and classification of protein surfaces on the basis of their geometry and physicochemical properties. The goal of the contest is to assess the capability of different computational approaches to identify different conformations of the same protein, or the presence of common sub-parts, starting from a set of molecular surfaces. We addressed two problems: defining the similarity solely based on the surface geometry or with the inclusion of physicochemical information, such as electrostatic potential, amino acid hydrophobicity, and the presence of hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. Retrieval and classification performances, with respect to the single protein or the existence of common sub-sequences, are analysed according to a number of information retrieval indicators.

All helicity amplitudes and phases are measured, and the longitudinal polarisation fraction is determined to be $f_{\rm L} = 0.578 \pm 0.010 \pm 0.011$ with world-best precision, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The pattern of helicity amplitude magnitudes is found to align with expectations from quark-helicity conservation in $B$ decays. The ratio of branching fractions $[\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^{*+}) \times \mathcal{B}(D_s^{*+} \to D_s^+ γ)]/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+)$ is measured to be $2.045 \pm 0.022 \pm 0.071$ with world-best precision. In addition, the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed $B_s^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+$ decay is made with a significance of seven standard deviations. The branching fraction ratio $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+)/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+)$ is measured to be $0.049 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.002$, where the third uncertainty is due to limited knowledge of the ratio of fragmentation fractions.

The flavor of the $D^0$ candidate is determined using the charge of the $D^{*\pm}$ meson, from which the decay is required to originate. The $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ decay is used as a calibration channel. The time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry for the $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ mode is measured to be: $$A^{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-3.1\pm 1.2\pm 0.4 \pm 0.2)\%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the $CP$ asymmetry of the calibration channel. This is the most precise determination of this quantity to date.

Automotive engineering is recognized as a combination of software and mechanical engineering due to the ever-increasing number of software-based components in vehicles. Since vehicles have become more sophisticated than before to ensure robustness, testing of automotive electronics is performed in high volume, producing immense test-related data.
This study investigates how unstructured and decentralized test-related data from testing of automotive electronics creates issues in decision making during the testing and analysis process of test artifacts by performing an exploratory case-study at one of the leading automotive companies, Volvo Cars. From the findings of the exploratory study, a prototype was designed to improve the data and information structure and presentation for test analysis and diagnostics for automotive electronics. The prototype's results showed that providing better data and information structure significantly increases the efficiency and reduces the workload for testers when conducting test analysis and diagnostics. Testers showed a decrease in task load for tasks related to testing due to better information structure, presentation, correctness and accessibility. Hence, the improvements aided the testers to arrive at decisions regarding root cause analysis of failed tests efficiently. The findings of this study can assist automotive companies in systematically investigating and improving the testing process of automotive electronics in regards to managing and structuring test-related data.

Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine deltams = 17.7656 +- 0.0057 ps-1, which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

We construct a Green function, which can identify the topological nature of interacting systems. It is equivalent to the single-particle Green function of effective non-interacting particles, the Bloch Hamiltonian of which is given by the inverse of the full Green function of the original interacting particles at zero frequency. The topological nature of the interacting insulators is originated from the coincidence of the poles and the zeros of the diagonal elements of the constructed Green function. The cross of the zeros in the momentum space closely relates to the topological nature of insulators. As a demonstration, using the zero's cross, we identify the topological phases of magnetic insulators, where both the ionic potential and the spin exchange between conduction electrons and magnetic moments are present together with the spin-orbital coupling. The topological phase identification is consistent with the topological invariant of the magnetic insulators. We also found an antiferromagnetic state with topologically breaking of the spin symmetry, where electrons with one spin orientation are in topological insulating state, while electrons with the opposite spin orientation are in topologically trivial one.

This paper pushes the envelope on decomposing camouflaged regions in an image into meaningful components, namely, camouflaged instances. To promote the new task of camouflaged instance segmentation of in-the-wild images, we introduce a dataset, dubbed CAMO++, that extends our preliminary CAMO dataset (camouflaged object segmentation) in terms of quantity and diversity. The new dataset substantially increases the number of images with hierarchical pixel-wise ground truths. We also provide a benchmark suite for the task of camouflaged instance segmentation. In particular, we present an extensive evaluation of state-of-the-art instance segmentation methods on our newly constructed CAMO++ dataset in various scenarios. We also present a camouflage fusion learning (CFL) framework for camouflaged instance segmentation to further improve the performance of state-of-the-art methods. The dataset, model, evaluation suite, and benchmark will be made publicly available on our project page: https://sites.google.com/view/ltnghia/research/camo_plus_plus

The Lieb-Robinson theorem states that information propagates with a finite velocity in quantum systems on a lattice with nearest-neighbor interactions. What are the speed limits on information propagation in quantum systems with power-law interactions, which decay as $1/r^α$ at distance $r$? Here, we present a definitive answer to this question for all exponents $α>2d$ and all spatial dimensions $d$. Schematically, information takes time at least $r^{\min\{1, α-2d\}}$ to propagate a distance~$r$. As recent state transfer protocols saturate this bound, our work closes a decades-long hunt for optimal Lieb-Robinson bounds on quantum information dynamics with power-law interactions.

The Standard Model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the Standard Model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.

Searches for $CP$ violation in the two-body decays $D_{(s)}^{+}\rightarrow h^{+}π^{0}$ and $D_{(s)}^{+} \rightarrow h^{+}η$ (where $h^{+}$ denotes a $π^{+}$ or $K^{+}$ meson) are performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to either 9 fb$^{-1}$ or 6 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The $π^{0}$ and $η$ mesons are reconstructed using the $e^{+}e^{-}γ$ final state, which can proceed as three-body decays $π^{0}\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}γ$ and $η\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}γ$, or via the two-body decays $π^{0}\rightarrow γγ$ and $η\rightarrowγγ$ followed by a photon conversion. The measurements are made relative to the control modes $D_{(s)}^{+}\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} h^{+}$ to cancel the production and detection asymmetries. The $CP$ asymmetries are measured to be \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{0}) &= (-1.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.6 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{0}) &= (-3.2 \pm 4.7 \pm 2.1 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow π^{+}η) &= (-0.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.4 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}η) &= (-6 \pm 10 \pm 4 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{0}) &= (-0.8 \pm 3.9 \pm 1.2 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow π^{+}η) &= (0.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.5 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}η) &= (0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 1.1 )\%, \end{align} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with no $CP$ violation and mostly constitute the most precise measurements of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in these decay modes to date.

Introduction: The aim of our retrospective study was to quantify the impact of Covid-19 on the temporal distribution of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) demand in Travis County, Austin, Texas and propose a robust model to forecast Covid-19 EMS incidents. Methods: We analyzed the temporal distribution of EMS calls in the Austin-Travis County area between January 1st, 2019, and December 31st, 2020. Change point detection was performed to identify critical dates marking changes in EMS call distributions, and time series regression was applied for forecasting Covid-19 EMS incidents. Results: Two critical dates marked the impact of Covid-19 on the distribution of EMS calls: March 17th, when the daily number of non-pandemic EMS incidents dropped significantly, and May 13th, by which the daily number of EMS calls climbed back to 75% of the number in pre-Covid-19 time. The new daily count of the hospitalization of Covid-19 patients alone proves a powerful predictor of the number of pandemic EMS calls, with an r2 value equal to 0.85. In particular, for every 2.5 cases where EMS takes a Covid-19 patient to a hospital, one person is admitted. Conclusion: The mean daily number of non-pandemic EMS demand was significantly less than the period before Covid-19 pandemic. The number of EMS calls for Covid-19 symptoms can be predicted from the daily new hospitalization of Covid-19 patients. These findings may be of interest to EMS departments as they plan for future pandemics, including the ability to predict pandemic-related calls in an effort to adjust a targeted response.

This Letter reports the first measurement of prompt $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ charmonium production in nuclear collisions at Large Hadron Collider energies. The cross-section ratio $σ(χ_{c2}) / σ(χ_{c1})$ is measured in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV, collected with the LHCb experiment. The $χ_{c1,2}$ states are reconstructed via their decay to a $\rm{J}/ψ$ meson, subsequently decaying into a pair of oppositely charged muons, and a photon, which is reconstructed in the calorimeter or via its conversion in the detector material. The cross-section ratio is consistent with unity in the two considered rapidity regions. Comparison with a corresponding cross-section ratio previously measured by the LHCb collaboration in $pp$ collisions suggests that $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ states are similarly affected by nuclear effects occurring in $p$Pb collisions.

Our results generalize work of the first two authors in [10], and more recent work by Lerner, et al. [28]. We also prove necessary conditions for the iterated commutators to be bounded, generalizing results of Isralowitz, et al.[20].

The ratio of the $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ fragmentation fractions, $f_s/f_d$, in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, is obtained as a function of $B$-meson transverse momentum and collision centre-of-mass energy from the combined analysis of different $B$-decay channels measured by the LHCb experiment. The results are described by a linear function of the meson transverse momentum, or with a function inspired by Tsallis statistics. Precise measurements of the branching fractions of the $B^0_s \to J/ψφ$ and $B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+$ decays are performed, reducing their uncertainty by about a factor of two with respect to previous world averages. Numerous $B^0_s$ decay branching fractions, measured at the LHCb experiment, are also updated using the new values of $f_s/f_d$ and branching fractions of normalisation channels. These results reduce a major source of systematic uncertainty in several searches for new physics performed through measurements of $B^0_s$ branching fractions.

Jeongganbo is a unique music representation invented by Sejong the Great. Contrary to the western music notation, the pitch of each note is encrypted and the length is visualized directly in a matrix form in Jeongganbo. We use topological data analysis (TDA) to analyze the Korean music written in Jeongganbo for Suyeonjang, Songuyeo, and Taryong, those well-known pieces played at the palace and among noble community. We are particularly interested in the cycle structure. We first define and determine the node elements of each music, characterized uniquely with its pitch and length. Then we transform the music into a graph and define the distance between the nodes as their adjacent occurrence rate. The graph is used as a point cloud whose homological structure is investigated by measuring the hole structure in each dimension. We identify cycles of each music, match those in Jeongganbo, and show how those cycles are interconnected. The main discovery of this work is that the cycles of Suyeonjang and Songuyeo, categorized as a special type of cyclic music known as Dodeuri, frequently overlap each other when appearing in the music while the cycles found in Taryong, which does not belong to Dodeuri class, appear individually.

The analysis is carried out using proton-proton collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The most significant state, $Z_{cs}(4000)^+$, has a mass of $4003\pm6\,^{+\,\phantom{0}4}_{-\,14}$ MeV, a width of $131\pm15\pm26$ MeV, and spin-parity $J^P=1^+$, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A new $1^+$ $X(4685)$ state decaying to the $J/ψφ$ final state is also observed with high significance. Model comparison is the cornerstone of theoretical progress in psychological research. Common practice overwhelmingly relies on tools that evaluate competing models by balancing in-sample descriptive adequacy against model flexibility, with modern approaches advocating the use of marginal likelihood for hierarchical cognitive models. Cross-validation is another popular approach but its implementation has remained out of reach for cognitive models evaluated in a Bayesian hierarchical framework, with the major hurdle being prohibitive computational cost. To address this issue, we develop novel algorithms that make variational Bayes (VB) inference for hierarchical models feasible and computationally efficient for complex cognitive models of substantive theoretical interest. It is well known that VB produces good estimates of the first moments of the parameters which gives good predictive densities estimates. We thus develop a novel VB algorithm with Bayesian prediction as a tool to perform model comparison by cross-validation, which we refer to as CVVB. In particular, the CVVB can be used as a model screening device that quickly identifies bad models. We demonstrate the utility of CVVB by revisiting a classic question in decision making research: what latent components of processing drive the ubiquitous speed-accuracy tradeoff? We demonstrate that CVVB strongly agrees with model comparison via marginal likelihood yet achieves the outcome in much less time. Our approach brings cross-validation within reach of theoretically important psychological models, and makes it feasible to compare much larger families of hierarchically specified cognitive models than has previously been possible.

Abstract:
We propose a new method to estimate a root-directed spanning tree from extreme data. A prominent example is a river network, to be discovered from extreme flow measured at a set of stations. Our new algorithm utilizes qualitative aspects of a max-linear Bayesian network, which has been designed for modelling causality in extremes. The algorithm estimates bivariate scores and returns a root-directed spanning tree. It performs extremely well on benchmark data and new data. We prove that the new estimator is consistent under a max-linear Bayesian network model with noise. We also assess its strengths and limitations in a small simulation study.

Realizing complete observability in the three-phase distribution system remains a challenge that hinders the implementation of classic state estimation algorithms. In this paper, a new method, called the pruned physics-aware neural network (P2N2), is developed to improve the voltage estimation accuracy in the distribution system. The method relies on the physical grid topology, which is used to design the connections between different hidden layers of a neural network model. To verify the proposed method, a numerical simulation based on one-year smart meter data of load consumptions for three-phase power flow is developed to generate the measurement and voltage state data. The IEEE 123-node system is selected as the test network to benchmark the proposed algorithm against the classic weighted least squares (WLS). Numerical results show that P2N2 outperforms WLS in terms of data redundancy and estimation accuracy.

Sleep apnea is a serious and severely under-diagnosed sleep-related respiration disorder characterized by repeated disrupted breathing events during sleep. It is diagnosed via polysomnography which is an expensive test conducted in a sleep lab requiring sleep experts to manually score the recorded data. Since the symptoms of sleep apnea are often ambiguous, it is difficult for a physician to decide whether to prescribe polysomnography. In this study, we investigate whether helpful information can be obtained by collecting and automatically analysing sleep data using a smartphone and an inexpensive strain gauge respiration belt. We evaluate how accurately we can detect sleep apnea with wide variety of machine learning techniques with data from a clinical study with 49 overnight sleep recordings. With less than one hour of training, we can distinguish between normal and apneic minutes with an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.7609, 0.7833, and 0.7217, respectively. These results can be achieved even if we train only on high-quality data from an entirely separate, clinically certified sensor, which has the potential to substantially reduce the cost of data collection. Data from a complete night can be analyzed in about one second on a smartphone.

For the first time, the full set of CP-averaged angular observables is measured in intervals of the dimuon invariant mass squared. Local deviations from Standard Model predictions are observed, similar to those in previous LHCb analyses of the isospin-partner $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay. The global tension is dependent on which effective couplings are considered and on the choice of theory nuisance parameters.

The CP asymmetry is measured to be $0.025 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to an external input, respectively. This is the most precise measurement of the CP asymmetry in the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0}$ and exceeds the precision on the current world average. This direct CP asymmetry is a key input to studies of a long-standing anomaly in $B$ meson decays, known as the $Kπ$-puzzle. The asymmetry is consistent with the previous measurements of this quantity, confirming and significantly enhancing the observed anomalous difference between the direct CP asymmetries of the $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{-}$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0}$ decays.

The decay is observed with a high significance and its branching fraction relative to the $B^0 \!\rightarrow D^{*\pm} D^\mp$ decay is measured to be \begin{align*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow D^{\ast \pm} D^{\mp}) }{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^{\ast \pm} D^{\mp}) } = 0.137 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.006 \,, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the ratio of the $B_s^0$ and $B^0$ hadronisation fractions.
