Unknotted Curves on Seifert Surfaces
Abstract: We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figu… ▽ More

Modular Safety-Critical Control of Legged Robots
Abstract: Safety concerns during the operation of legged robots must be addressed to enable their widespread use. Machine learning-based control methods that use model-based constraints provide promising means to improve robot safety. This study presents a modular safety filter to improve the safety of a legged robot, i.e., reduce the chance of a fall. The prerequisite is the availability of a robot that is… ▽ More

Fillable contact structures from positive surgery
Abstract: We consider the question of when the operation of contact surgery with positive surgery coefficient, along a knot $K$ in a contact 3-manifold $Y$, gives rise to a weakly fillable contact structure. We show that this happens if and only if $Y$ itself is weakly fillable, and $K$ is isotopic to the boundary of a properly embedded symplectic disk inside a filling of $Y$. Moreover, if $Y'$ is a contact… ▽ More

On contact type hypersurfaces in 4-space
Abstract: We consider constraints on the topology of closed 3-manifolds that can arise as hypersurfaces of contact type in standard symplectic $R^4$. Using an obstruction derived from Heegaard Floer homology we prove that no Brieskorn homology sphere admits a contact type embedding in $R^4$, a result that has bearing on conjectures of Gompf and Kollár. This implies in particular that no rationally convex do… ▽ More

Homology spheres bounding acyclic smooth manifolds and symplectic fillings
Abstract: In this paper, we collect various structural results to determine when an integral homology $3$--sphere bounds an acyclic smooth $4$--manifold, and when this can be upgraded to a Stein manifold. In a different direction we study whether smooth embedding of connected sums of lens spaces in $\mathbb{C}^2$ can be upgraded to a Stein embedding, and determined that this never happens.

Mazur-type manifolds with $L$-space boundaries
Abstract: In this note, we prove that if the boundary of a Mazur-type $4$-manifold is an irreducible Heegaard Floer homology $L$-space, then the manifold must be the $4$-ball, and the boundary must be the $3$-sphere. We use this to give a new proof of Gabai's Property R.

Symplectic fillings, contact surgeries, and Lagrangian disks
Abstract: This paper completely answers the question of when contact (r)-surgery on a Legendrian knot in the standard contact structure on the 3-sphere yields a symplectically fillable contact manifold for r in (0,1]. We also give obstructions for other positive r and investigate Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian knots.

Obstructing pseudoconvex embeddings and contractible Stein fillings for Brieskorn spheres
Abstract: A conjecture due to Gompf asserts that no nontrivial Brieskorn homology sphere admits a pseudoconvex embedding in ${\mathbb C}^2$, with either orientation. A related question asks whether every compact contractible 4-manifold admits the structure of a Stein domain. We verify Gompf's conjecture, with one orientation, for a family of Brieskorn spheres of which some are known to admit a smooth embedd… ▽ More

Tight small Seifert fibered manifolds with $e_0=-2$
Abstract: In this paper we provide the classification of tight contact structures on some small Seifert fibered manifolds. As an application of this classification, combined with work of Lekili in \cite{L2010}, we obtain infinitely many counterexamples to a question of Honda-Kazez-Matić that asks whether a right-veering, non-destabilizable open book necessarily supports a tight contact structure.

Naturality of Heegaard Floer invariants under positive rational contact surgery
Abstract: For a nullhomologous Legendrian knot in a closed contact 3-manifold Y we consider a contact structure obtained by positive rational contact surgery. We prove that in this situation the Heegaard Floer contact invariant of Y is mapped by a surgery cobordism to the contact invariant of the result of contact surgery. In addition we characterize the spin-c structure on the cobordism that induces the re… ▽ More

Legendrian and transverse cables of positive torus knots
Abstract: In this paper we classify Legendrian and transverse knots in the knot types obtained from positive torus knots by cabling. This classification allows us to demonstrate several new phenomena. Specifically, we show there are knot types that have non-destabilizable Legendrian representatives whose Thurston-Bennequin invariant is arbitrarily far from maximal. We also exhibit Legendrian knots requiring… ▽ More
