Abstract:
Chung and Graham considered the problem of minimizing the number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph containing all $n$-vertex trees as a subgraph. They showed that such a graph has at least $\frac{1}{2}n \log{n}$ edges. In this note, we improve this lower estimate to $n \log{n}$.

This paper establishes that an exactly optimal rule for Bayesian Quickest Change Detection (QCD) of Markov chains is a threshold test on the no change posterior. We also provide a computationally efficient scalar filter for the no change posterior whose effort is independent of the dimension of the chains. We establish that an (undesirable) weak practical super-martingale phenomenon can be exhibited by the no change posterior when the before and after chains are too close in a relative entropy rate sense. The proposed detector is examined in simulation studies.

The problem of maximizing edges among $n$-vertex properly edge-colored graphs not containing a rainbow-$F$, known as the rainbow Turán problem, was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We investigate a variation of this problem with the additional restriction that the graph is planar, and we denote the corresponding extremal number by $\ex_{\p}^*(n,F)$. In particular, we determine $\ex_{\p}^*(n,P_5)$, where $P_5$ denotes the $5$-vertex path.

We call an edge-colored graph rainbow if all of its edges receive distinct colors. An edge-colored graph $Γ$ is called $H$-rainbow saturated if $Γ$ does not contain a rainbow copy of $H$ and adding an edge of any color to $Γ$ creates a rainbow copy of $H$. The rainbow saturation number $sat(n,{R}(H))$ is the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-rainbow saturated graph. Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz conjectured that $sat(n,{R}(K_r))=2(r-2)n+O(1)$ for fixed $r\geq 3$. Disproving this conjecture, we establish that for every $r\geq 3$, there exists a constant $α_r$ such that $$r + Ω\left(r^{1/3}\right) \le α_r \le r + r^{1/2} \qquad \text{and} \qquad sat(n,{R}(K_r)) = α_r n + O(1).$$ Recently, Behague, Johnston, Letzter, Morrison, and Ogden independently gave a slightly weaker upper bound which was sufficient to disprove the conjecture. They also introduced the weak rainbow saturation number, and asked whether this is equal to the rainbow saturation number of $K_r$, since the standard weak saturation number of complete graphs equals the standard saturation number. Surprisingly, our lower bound separates the rainbow saturation number from the weak rainbow saturation number, answering this question in the negative. The existence of the constant $α_r$ resolves another of their questions in the affirmative for complete graphs. Furthermore, we show that the conjecture of Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz is true if we have an additional assumption that the edge-colored $K_r$-rainbow saturated graph must be rainbow. As an ingredient of the proof, we study graphs which are $K_r$-saturated with respect to the operation of deleting one edge and adding two edges.

Let $f_k(n,H)$ denote the maximum number of edges not contained in any monochromatic copy of~$H$ in a $k$-coloring of the edges of $K_n$, and let $ex(n,H)$ denote the Turán number of $H$. In place of $f_2(n,H)$ we simply write $f(n,H)$. Keevash and Sudakov proved that $f(n,H)=ex(n,H)$ if $H$ is an edge-critical graph or $C_4$ and asked if this equality holds for any graph $H$. All known exact values of this question require $H$ to contain at least one cycle. In this paper we focus on acyclic graphs and have the following results:
(1) We prove $f(n,H)=ex(n,H)$ when $H$ is a spider or a double broom.
(2) A \emph{tail} in $H$ is a path $P_3=v_0v_1v_2$ such that $v_2$ is only adjacent to $v_1$ and $v_1$ is only adjacent to $v_0,v_2$ in $H$. We obtain a tight upper bound for $f(n,H)$ when $H$ is a bipartite graph with a tail. This result provides the first bipartite graphs which answer the question of Keevash and Sudakov in the negative.
(3) Liu, Pikhurko and Sharifzadeh asked if $f_k(n,T)=(k-1)ex(n,T)$ when $T$ is a tree. We provide an upper bound for $f_{2k}(n,P_{2k})$ and show it is tight when $2k-1$ is prime. This provides a negative answer to their question.

The weak poset Ramsey number $R_w(Q_m,Q_n)$ is defined analogously, with weak copies instead of induced copies. It is easy to see that $R(Q_m,Q_n) \ge R_w(Q_m,Q_n)$.
Axenovich and Walzer showed that $n+2 \le R(Q_2,Q_n) \le 2n+2$. Recently, Lu and Thompson improved the upper bound to $\frac{5}{3}n+2$. In this paper, we solve this problem asymptotically by showing that $R(Q_2,Q_n)=n+O(n/\log n)$.
In the diagonal case, Cox and Stolee proved $R_w(Q_n,Q_n) \ge 2n+1$ using a probabilistic construction. In the induced case, Bohman and Peng showed $R(Q_n,Q_n) \ge 2n+1$ using an explicit construction. Improving these results, we show that $R_w(Q_m,Q_n) \ge n+m+1$ for all $m \ge 2$ and large $n$ by giving an explicit construction; in particular, we prove that $R_w(Q_2,Q_n)=n+3$.

Finally, we give multiple conjectures concerning the asymptotic value of the inverse Turán number of $C_4$ and $P_{\ell}$, suggesting that in the latter problem the asymptotic behavior depends heavily on the parity of $\ell$.

We are interested in the largest possible cardinality $f(m)$ of the family of sets $s(τ)$ for Pareto optimal map**s $τ$ taken over all sets of preference lists of $m$ buyers. We improve the earlier upper bound on $f(m)$ given by Asinowski, Keszegh and Miltzow by making a connection between this problem and some problems in extremal set theory.

Abstract:
Let $f(n,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $H$ possible in an $n$-vertex planar graph. The function $f(n,H)$ has been determined when $H$ is a cycle of length $3$ or $4$ by Hakimi and Schmeichel and when $H$ is a complete bipartite graph with smaller part of size 1 or 2 by Alon and Caro. We determine $f(n,H)$ exactly in the case when $H$ is a path of length 3.

We consider edge decompositions of the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ into isomorphic copies of a given graph $H$. While a number of results are known about decomposing $Q_n$ into graphs from various classes, the simplest cases of paths and cycles of a given length are far from being understood. A conjecture of Erde asserts that if $n$ is even, $\ell < 2^n$ and $\ell$ divides the number of edges of $Q_n$, then the path of length $\ell$ decomposes $Q_n$. Tapadia et al.\ proved that any path of length $2^mn$, where $2^m<n$, satisfying these conditions decomposes $Q_n$. Here, we make progress toward resolving Erde's conjecture by showing that cycles of certain lengths up to $2^{n+1}/n$ decompose $Q_n$. As a consequence, we show that $Q_n$ can be decomposed into copies of any path of length at most $2^{n}/n$ dividing the number of edges of $Q_n$, thereby settling Erde's conjecture up to a linear factor.

One can easily show that h(Forb(n,H))= O(n^{1-s}) for a positive s if H is not strongly acyclic. In this paper, we show that the 2-color Ramsey number of Berge cliques is linear. In particular, we show that $R^3(BK_s, BK_t) = s+t-3$ for $s,t \geq 4$ and $\max(s,t) \geq 5$ where $BK_n$ is a Berge-$K_n$ hypergraph. For higher uniformity, we show that $R^4(BK_t, BK_t) = t+1$ for $t\geq 6$ and $R^k(BK_t, BK_t)=t$ for $k \geq 5$ and $t$ sufficiently large. For small enough $r$ and non-bipartite $F$, $ex_r(n,F)=Ω(n^2)$; we show that for sufficiently large $r$, $ex_r(n,F)=o(n^2)$. Let $thres(F) = \min\{r_0 :ex_r(n,F) = o(n^2) \text{ for all } r \ge r_0 \}$. We show lower and upper bounds for $thres(F)$, the uniformity threshold of $F$. In particular, we obtain that $thres(\triangle) = 5$, improving a result of Győri.
We also study the analogous problem for linear hypergraphs. Let $ex^L_r(n,F)$ denote the maximum number of hyperedges in an $r$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which does not contain a Berge-$F$, and let the linear unformity threshold $thres^L(F) = \min\{r_0 :ex^L_r(n,F) = o(n^2) \text{ for all } r \ge r_0 \}$. We show that $thres^L(F)$ is equal to the chromatic number of $F$.

Similarly to classical saturation functions, define $\mathrm{sat}_t(n, \mathcal{C})$ to be the minimum number of edges in a $(\mathcal{C},t)$ saturated graph. Let $\mathcal{C}_r(H)$ be the family consisting of every edge-colored copy of $H$ which uses exactly $r$ colors.
In this paper we consider a variety of colored saturation problems. We determine the order of magnitude for $\mathrm{sat}_t(n, \mathcal{C}_r(K_k))$ for all $r$, showing a sharp change in behavior when $r\geq \binom{k-1}{2}+2$. A particular case of this theorem proves a conjecture of Barrus, Ferrara, Vandenbussche, and Wenger. We determine $\mathrm{sat}_t(n, \mathcal{C}_2(K_3))$ exactly and determine the extremal graphs. Additionally, we document some interesting irregularities in the colored saturation function.

Strengthening the result of Bondy and Simonovits in the case of 6-cycles, we also show that it is enough to forbid these bordered orderings of the 6-cycle to guarantee an upper bound of $O(n^{4/3})$ on the number of edges.

Let $c$ denote the largest constant such that every $C_{6}$-free graph $G$ contains a bipartite and $C_4$-free subgraph having $c$ fraction of edges of $G$. Győri et al. showed that $\frac{3}{8} \le c \le \frac{2}{5}$. We prove that $c=\frac{3}{8}$. More generally, we show that for any $\varepsilon>0$, and any integer $k \ge 2$, there is a $C_{2k}$-free graph $G_1$ which does not contain a bipartite subgraph of girth greater than $2k$ with more than $\left(1-\frac{1}{2^{2k-2}}\right)\frac{2}{2k-1}(1+\varepsilon)$ fraction of the edges of $G_1$. There also exists a $C_{2k}$-free graph $G_2$ which does not contain a bipartite and $C_4$-free subgraph with more than $\left(1-\frac{1}{2^{k-1}}\right)\frac{1}{k-1}(1+\varepsilon)$ fraction of the edges of $G_2$.
One of our proofs uses the following statement, which we prove using probabilistic ideas, generalizing a theorem of Erdős: For any $\varepsilon>0$, and any integers $a$, $b$, $k \ge 2$, there exists an $a$-uniform hypergraph $H$ of girth greater than $k$ which does not contain any $b$-colorable subhypergraph with more than $\left(1-\frac{1}{b^{a-1}}\right)\left(1+\varepsilon\right)$ fraction of the hyperedges of $H$. We also prove further generalizations of this theorem.
In addition, we give a new and very short proof of a result of Kühn and Osthus, which states that every bipartite $C_{2k}$-free graph $G$ contains a $C_{4}$-free subgraph with at least $1/(k-1)$ fraction of the edges of $G$. We also answer a question of Kühn and Osthus about $C_{2k}$-free graphs obtained by pasting together $C_{2l}$'s (with $k>l\ge3$).

In particular, we show that: (1) intersection graphs of grounded segments and intersection graphs of downward rays form the same graph class, (2) not every intersection graph of rays is an intersection graph of downward rays, and (3) not every intersection graph of rays is an outer segment graph. The first result answers an open problem posed by Cabello and Jejčič. The third result confirms a conjecture by Cabello. We thereby completely elucidate the remaining open questions on the containment relations between these classes of segment graphs. We further characterize the complexity of the recognition problems for the classes of outer segment, grounded segment, and ray intersection graphs. We prove that these recognition problems are complete for the existential theory of the reals. This holds even if a 1-string realization is given as additional input.

We study the problem of determining the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family for a given partially ordered set (poset) $P$. In particular, we find the exact size of the largest intersecting $B$-free family where $B$ is the butterfly poset and classify the cases of equality. The proof uses a new generalization of the partition method of Griggs, Li and Lu. We also prove generalizations of two well-known inequalities of Bollobás and Greene, Katona and Kleitman in this case. Furthermore, we obtain a general bound on the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family, which is sharp for an infinite class of posets originally considered by Burcsi and Nagy, when $n$ is odd. Finally, we give a new proof of the bound on the maximum size of an intersecting $k$-Sperner family and determine the cases of equality.

Abstract:
Helical solenoids have been proposed as an option for a Helical Cooling Channel for muons in a proposed Muon Collider. Helical solenoids can provide the required three main field components: solenoidal, helical dipole, and a helical gradient. In general terms, the last two are a function of many geometric parameters: coil aperture, coil radial and longitudinal dimensions, helix period and orbit ra…

In this paper, we present design studies of a Helical Solenoid, addressing the geometric tunability limits and auxiliary correction system.

Abstract:
A classical theorem of De Bruijn and Erdős asserts that any noncollinear set of n points in the plane determines at least n distinct lines. We prove that an analogue of this theorem holds for graphs. Restricting our attention to comparability graphs, we obtain a version of the De Bruijn-Erdős theorem for partially ordered sets (posets). Moreover, in this case, we have an improved bound on the numb…

Restricting our attention to comparability graphs, we obtain a version of the De Bruijn-Erdős theorem for partially ordered sets (posets). Moreover, in this case, we have an improved bound on the number of lines depending on the height of the poset. The extremal configurations are also determined.

Abstract:
We introduce a method of decomposing the family of intervals along a cyclic permutation into chains to determine the size of the largest family of subsets of $[n]:= \{1,2,...,n\}$ not containing one or more given posets as a subposet. De Bonis, Katona and Swanepoel determined the size of the largest butterfly-free family. We strengthen this result by showing that, for certain posets containing the…

De Bonis, Katona and Swanepoel determined the size of the largest butterfly-free family. We strengthen this result by showing that, for certain posets containing the butterfly poset as a subposet, the same bound holds. We also obtain the corresponding LYM-type inequalities.

Abstract:
Let $La(n,P)$ be the maximum size of a family of subsets of $[n]= \{1,2, ..., n \}$ not containing $P$ as a (weak) subposet, and let $h(P)$ be the length of a longest chain in $P$. The best known upper bound for $La(n,P)$ in terms of $|P|$ and $h(P)$ is due to Chen and Li, who showed that…

Let $La(n,P)$ be the maximum size of a family of subsets of $[n]= \{1,2, ..., n \}$ not containing $P$ as a (weak) subposet, and let $h(P)$ be the length of a longest chain in $P$. The best known upper bound for $La(n,P)$ in terms of $|P|$ and $h(P)$ is due to Chen and Li, who showed that $La(n,P) \le \frac{1}{m+1} \left(|P| + \frac{1}{2}(m^2 +3m-2)(h(P)-1) -1 \right) {\binom {n} {\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}}$ for any fixed $m \ge 1$.
In this paper we show that $La(n,P) \le \frac{1}{2^{k-1}} (|P| + (3k-5)2^{k-2}(h(P)-1) - 1 ) {n \choose {\lfloor n/2\rfloor} }$ for any fixed $k \ge 2$, improving the best known upper bound. By choosing $k$ appropriately, we obtain that $La(n,P) = O\left( h(P) \log_2\left(\frac{|P|}{h(P)}+2\right) \right) {n \choose \lfloor n/2 \rfloor }$ as a corollary, which we show is best possible for general $P$. We also give a different proof of this corollary by using bounds for generalized diamonds. We also show that the Lubell function of a family of subsets of $[n]$ not containing $P$ as an induced subposet is $O(n^c)$ for every $c>\frac{1}{2}$.

The Morphisms With Unstackable Image Words
Authors:

Abstract:
In an attempt to classify all of the overlap-free morphisms constructively using the Latin-square morphism, we came across an interesting counterexample, the Leech square-free morphism. We generalize the combinatorial properties of the Leech square-free morphism to gain insights on a larger class of both overlap-free morphisms and square-free morphisms.

We define a morphism based upon a Latin square that generalizes the Thue-Morse morphism. We prove that fixed points of this morphism are overlap-free sequences generalizing results of Allouche - Shallit and Frid.
