As a main result, we characterize Jordan embeddings $φ: \mathcal{A} \to M_n$ (when $n\geq 3$) as continuous injective maps which preserve commutativity and spectrum. We show by counterexamples that all these assumptions are indispensable (unless $\mathcal{A} = M_n$ when injectivity is superfluous).

The correspondence principle between strings and black holes is a general framework for matching black holes and massive states of fundamental strings at a point where their physical properties (such as mass, entropy and temperature) smoothly agree with each other. This correspondence becomes puzzling when attempting to include rotation: At large enough spins, there exist degenerate string states that seemingly cannot be matched to any black hole. Conversely, there exist black holes with arbitrarily large spins that cannot correspond to any single-string state. We discuss in detail the properties of both types of objects and find that a correspondence that resolves the puzzles is possible by adding dynamical features and non-stationary configurations to the picture. Our scheme incorporates all black hole and string phases as part of the correspondence, save for one outlier which remains enigmatic: the near-extremal Kerr black hole. Along the way, we elaborate on general aspects of the correspondence that have not been emphasized before.

We describe the dynamical evaporation of a black hole as the classical evolution in time of a black hole in an Anti-de Sitter braneworld. A bulk black hole whose horizon intersects the brane yields the classical bulk dual of a black hole coupled to quantum conformal fields. The evaporation of this black hole happens when the bulk horizon slides off the brane, making the horizon on the brane shrink. We use a large-D effective theory of the bulk Einstein equations to solve the time evolution of these systems. With this method, we study the dual evaporation of a variety of black holes interacting with colder radiation baths. We also obtain the dual of the collapse of holographic radiation to form a black hole on the brane. Finally, we discuss the evolution of the Page curve of the radiation in our evaporation setups, with entanglement islands appearing and then shrinking during the decreasing part of the curve.

In this work, we study a stochastic system of N particles associated with the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system. This particle system is singular and non Markovian in that its drift term depends on the past of the particles. When the sensitivity parameter is sufficiently small, we show that this particle system indeed exists for any $N\geq 2$, we show tightness in $N$ of its empirical measure, and that any weak limit point of this empirical measure, as $N\to\infty$, solves some nonlinear martingale problem, which in particular implies that its family of time-marginals solves the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system in some weak sense. The main argument of the proof consists of a Markovianization of the interaction kernel: We show that, in some loose sense, the two-by-two path-dependant interaction can be controlled by a two-by-two Coulomb interaction, as in the parabolic-elliptic case.

In three-dimensional de Sitter space classical black holes do not exist, and the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution instead describes a conical defect with a single cosmological horizon. We argue that the quantum backreaction of conformal fields can generate a black hole horizon, leading to a three-dimensional quantum de Sitter black hole. Its size can be as large as the cosmological horizon in a Nariai-type limit. We show explicitly how these solutions arise using braneworld holography, but also compare to a non-holographic, perturbative analysis of backreaction due to conformally coupled scalar fields in conical de Sitter space. We analyze the thermodynamics of this quantum black hole, revealing it behaves similarly to its classical four-dimensional counterpart, where the generalized entropy replaces the classical Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We compute entropy deficits due to nucleating the three-dimensional black hole and revisit arguments for a possible matrix model description of dS spacetimes. Finally, we comment on the holographic dual description for dS spacetimes as seen from the braneworld perspective.

We study the evolution of the Gregory-Laflamme instability for black strings in global AdS spacetime, and investigate the CFT dual of the formation of a bulk naked singularity. Using an effective theory in the large D limit, we uncover a rich variety of dynamical behaviour, depending on the thickness of the string and on initial perturbations. These include: large inflows of horizon generators from the asymptotic boundary (a `black tsunami'); a pinch-off of the horizon that likely reveals a naked singularity; and competition between these two behaviours, such as a nakedly singular pinch-off that subsequently gets covered by a black tsunami. The holographic dual describes different patterns of heat flow due to the Hawking radiation of two black holes placed at the antipodes of a spherical universe. We also present a model that describes, in any D, the burst in the holographic stress-energy tensor when the signal from a bulk self-similar naked singularity reaches the boundary. The model shows that the shear components of the boundary stress diverge in finite time, while the energy density and pressures from the burst vanish.

We analyze different holographic complexity proposals for black holes that include corrections from bulk quantum fields. The specific setup is the quantum BTZ black hole, which encompasses in an exact manner the effects of conformal fields with large central charge in the presence of the black hole, including the backreaction corrections to the BTZ metric. Our results show that Volume Complexity admits a consistent quantum expansion and correctly reproduces known limits. On the other hand, the generalized Action Complexity picks up large contributions from the singularity, which is modified due to quantum backreaction, with the result that Action Complexity does not reproduce the expected classical limit. Furthermore, we show that the doubly-holographic setup allows computing the complexity coming purely from quantum fields - a notion that has proven evasive in usual holographic setups. We find that in holographic induced-gravity scenarios the complexity of quantum fields in a black hole background vanishes to leading order in the gravitational strength of CFT effects.

Contrary to previous works, the interaction is not assumed to be convex, which means that this result covers cases where the exit-time for the interacting process is smaller than the exit-time for the associated non-interacting process. The technique of the proof is based on the fact that, under an appropriate contraction condition, the interacting process is conveniently coupled with a non-interacting (linear) Markov process where the interacting law is replaced by a constant Dirac mass at the fixed point of the deterministic zero-temperature process.

We extend in two directions our recent investigation of strongly interacting quantum fields in a class of spacetimes with chronology horizons (Misner spacetimes). First, we generalize to arbitrary dimensions the holographic mechanism of chronology protection in the absence of gravitational backreaction. The AdS geometry dual to a conformal field theory in these spacetimes shows, in every dimension, an entire separation between the bulk duals of the chronal and non-chronal regions, with the former being complete, regular geometries. In some instances the protection requires the inclusion of non-planar CFT corrections, which we obtain using double holography. Second, we compute the gravitational backreaction of the quantum fields in the Misner-AdS$_3$ spacetime, and show that the null chronology horizon turns into a strong, spacelike curvature singularity. This is one of the few controlled, explicit examples where we can see quantum effects change a Cauchy horizon into a spacelike singularity.

We use holography to examine the response of interacting quantum fields to the appearance of closed timelike curves in a dynamically evolving background that initially does not contain them. For this purpose, we study a family of two-dimensional spacetimes that model very broad classes of wormhole time machines. The behavior of strongly coupled conformal theories in these spacetimes is then holographically described by three-dimensional AdS bulk geometries that we explicitly construct. The dual bulk spacetime is free from any divergences, but splits into two disconnected components, without and with CTCs, which are joined only through the boundary; then, passages across the chronology horizon are impossible for any field excitations. In dual terms, the strong self-interaction of the CFT decouples the pathological part from the rest of the spacetime. We also find that entangling the CFTs in two separate time machines connects them through a traversable bulk wormhole. Nevertheless, any entanglement-assisted chronology violations will be prevented by quantum bulk corrections, i.e., subleading 1/N effects, again without needing any gravitational backreaction of the CFT. We are led to speculate that chronology may be protected without involving Planck scale physics.

We describe the construction of traversable wormholes with multiple mouths in four spacetime dimensions and discuss associated quantum entanglement. Our wormholes may be traversed between any pair of mouths. In particular, in the three-mouth case they have fundamental group $F_2$ (the free group on two generators). By contrast, connecting three regions $A,B,C$ in pairs ($AB$, $BC$, and $AC$) using three separate wormholes would give fundamental group $F_3$. Our solutions are asymptotically flat up to the presence of possible magnetic fluxes or cosmic strings that extend to infinity. The construction begins with a two-mouth traversable wormhole supported by backreaction from quantum fields. Inserting a sufficiently small black hole into its throat preserves traversability between the original two mouths. This black hole is taken to be the mouth of another wormhole connecting the original throat to a new distant region of spacetime. Making the new wormhole traversable in a manner similar to the original two-mouth wormhole provides the desired causal connections. From a dual field theory point of view, when AdS asymptotics are added to our construction, multiparty entanglement may play an important role in the traversability of the resulting wormhole.

In this work, we study the convergence of the empirical measure of moderately interacting particle systems with singular interaction kernels. First, we prove quantitative convergence of the time marginals of the empirical measure of particle positions towards the solution of the limiting nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. Second, we prove the well-posedness for the McKean-Vlasov SDE involving such singular kernels and the convergence of the empirical measure towards it (propagation of chaos).
Our results only require very weak regularity on the interaction kernel, including the Biot-Savart kernel, and attractive kernels such as Riesz and Keller-Segel kernels in arbitrary dimension. For some of these important examples, this is the first time that a quantitative approximation of the PDE is obtained by means of a stochastic particle system. In particular, this convergence still holds (locally in time) for PDEs exhibiting a blow-up in finite time.
The proofs are based on a semigroup approach combined with a fine analysis of the regularity of infinite-dimensional stochastic convolution integrals.

In this work we obtain rates of convergence for two moderately interacting stochastic particle systems with singular kernels associated to the viscous Burgers and Keller-Segel equations. The main novelty of this work is to consider a non-locally integrable kernel. Namely for the viscous Burgers equation in $\mathbb{R}$, we obtain almost sure convergence of the mollified empirical measure to the solution of the PDE in some Bessel space with a rate of convergence of order $N^{-1/8}$, on any time interval. The same holds for the genuine empirical measure in Wasserstein distance. In the case of the Keller-Segel equation on a $d$-dimensional torus, we obtain almost sure convergence of the mollified empirical measure to the solution of the PDE in some $L^q$ space with a rate of order $N^{-\frac{1}{2d+1}}$. The result holds up to the maximal existence time of the PDE, for any value of the chemo-attractant sensitivity $χ$.

We argue that, instead, what these results imply is that the inner horizon remains non-singular when leading-order backreaction of the quantum fields is computed, but, after next-order backreaction is accounted for, it will become singular. Then, strong cosmic censorship will be enforced in the BTZ black hole. We support our claims using a four-dimensional holographic dual of the system, which connects the instability of the inner horizon of the BTZ black hole to that of Kerr-type black holes.

Under semiclassical evolution, black holes retain a smooth horizon but fail to return information. Yet, the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription computes the boundary entropy expected from unitary CFT evolution. We demonstrate this in a novel setting with an asymptotic bulk detector, eliminating an assumption about the entanglement wedge of auxiliary systems.
We consider three interpretations of this result. (i) At face value, information is lost in the bulk but not in the CFT. This conflicts with the AdS/CFT dictionary. (ii) No unique QFT state (pure or mixed) governs all detector responses to the bulk Hawking radiation. This conflicts with the existence of an S-matrix. (iii) Nonlocal couplings to the black hole interior cause asymptotic detectors to respond as though the radiation was pure, even though it is naively thermal. This invalidates the standard interpretation of the semiclassical state, including its smoothness at the horizon.
We conclude that unitary boundary evolution requires asymptotic bulk detectors to become unambiguously pure at late times. We ask whether the RT prescription can still reproduce the boundary entropy in this bulk scenario. We find that this requires a substantial failure of semiclassical gravity in a low-curvature region, such as a firewall that purifies the Hawking radiation.
Finally, we allow that the dual to semiclassical gravity may be an ensemble of unitary theories. This appears to relax the tensions we found: the ensemble average of out-states would be mixed, but the ensemble average of final entropies would vanish.

It involved an original type of McKean-Vlasov interaction kernel which involved all the past time marginals of its probability distribution in a singular way. In the present paper, we study this McKean-Vlasov representation in the two-dimensional case. In this setting there exists a possibility of a blow-up in finite time for the Keller-Segel system if some parameters of the model are large. Indeed, we prove the well-posedness of the McKean-Vlasov equation under some constraints involving a parameter of the model and the initial datum. Under these constraints, we also prove the global existence for the Keller-Segel model in the plane. To obtain this result, we combine PDE analysis and stochastic analysis techniques.

Self-similarity in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories and critical collapse

Abstract:
We study continuously self-similar solutions of four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory, with an arbitrary dilaton coupling. Self-similarity is an emergent symmetry of gravitational collapse near the threshold of black hole formation. We study continuously self-similar solutions of four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory, with an arbitrary dilaton coupling. Self-similarity is an emergent symmetry of gravitational collapse near the threshold of black hole formation. The resulting `critical collapse' picture has been intensively studied in the past for self-gravitating scalar fields or perfect fluids, but little is known concerning other systems. Here we assess the impact of gauge fields on critical collapse, in the context of low-energy string theories. Matter fields need not inherit the symmetries of a spacetime. We determine the homothetic conditions that scale-invariance of the metric imposes on the dilaton and electromagnetic fields, and we obtain their general solution. The inclusion of a potential for the dilaton is compatible with the homothetic conditions if and only if it is of the Liouville type. By imposing also spherical symmetry, a detailed analysis of critical collapse in these systems is possible by casting the field equations as an autonomous system. We find analytically that Choptuik's critical exponent depends on the dilaton coupling. Despite this and the presence of two novel fixed points, the electromagnetic field necessarily vanishes for the critical solution.

In this paper we analyze a stochastic interpretation of the one-dimensional parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system without cut-off. It involves an original type of McKean-Vlasov interaction kernel. At the particle level, each particle interacts with all the past of each other particle by means of a time integrated functional involving a singular kernel. At the mean-field level studied here, the McKean-Vlasov limit process interacts with all the past time marginals of its probability distribution in a similarly singular way. We prove that the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system in the whole Euclidean space and the corresponding McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equation are well-posed for any values of the parameters of the model.
