A current pulse of $\sim$ 24 A with duration of $\sim$ 10 s raised the pressure in the chamber from 2.0 $\times$ $10^{-10}$ Torr to 3.3 $\times$ $10^{-10}$ Torr. Remarkably, the pressure recovery time after switching off the dispensers current was found to be $\sim$ 600 ms, making a significant advancement in achieving fast recovery of UHV environment surrounding the MOT region. This study is very useful for laser cooling and magnetic trap** / evaporative cooling of atoms on atom chip in the same UHV chamber.

In the present work, the effect of AC-Stark shift (i.e. light-shift) in optical dipole trap on in-situ absorption probe imaging of the trapped atoms has been investigated. We have calculated the light-shift of various energy levels of $^{87}$Rb atoms relevant for trap** in an optical dipole trap (ODT). The spatial varying intensity of the ODT beam results in position dependent light-shift (i.e. AC-Stark shift). Such modifications in the energy levels of the atom result in modification in the absorption cross-section, which finally modifies the optical density (OD) in in-situ absorption imaging at a given wavelength of imaging probe beam. Incorporating the light-shift in analysis of images, the correct number of atoms in the optical dipole trap has been estimated for the experimentally observed absorption images of the trapped cloud. The in-situ imaging and this work can be useful in estimating the instantaneous loss rate from the trap during the evaporative cooling of trapped atom cloud.

Here, we report our studies on the continuous loading of a U-magneto-optical trap (U-MOT) on atom-chip from background rubidium (Rb) vapor generated using a dispenser source in ultra high vacuum (UHV) environment. Using the U-MOT loading curves, the partial pressure due to Rb vapor and pressure due to background gas have been estimated near the MOT cloud position. The estimated pressure due to Rb vapor increased from $\sim \; 1.4 \times 10^{-10}$ Torr to $ \sim \; 4.1 \times 10^{-9} $ Torr as Rb-dispenser current was increased from 2.8 to 3.4 A. The increase in dispenser current also resulted in decrease in loading as well as lifetime of the MOT cloud. This study is useful for magnetic trap** experiments where accurate information of pressure in chamber is important for the lifetime of the magnetic trap.

The dependence of spectral features of two N-systems on driving beams (\textit{i.e.} coupling and control beams) strength and detuning has been investigated. The results show that the dual EIT spectral features in both the N-systems can be manipulated by varying the strength and detuning of both the driving beams. A $Λ$-system in $D_2$ line transition of the $^{87}Rb$ atom has been investigated for quantum interference effects for different configurations of coupling field. With a travelling wave coupling field (co-propagating with probe field), the probe beam shows the earlier known electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect at the resonance. With a standing wave coupling field (which is co- and counter-propagating with probe beam), the probe EIT gets transformed into an electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). A variation in coupling beam power has shown that, at high coupling power, EIA signals have much larger amplitude and slope than those of EIT signals with and without applied magnetic field. These EIA signals can be useful for tight laser frequency locking and optical switching.

The role of U-wire generated quadrupole like magnetic field configuration on loading of cold $^{87}Rb$ atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) on atom-chip has been investigated. It is shown by simulations that the quadrupole field profile and the center of the quadrupole field vary depending upon the U-wire current and bias field values. The result of simulations show that the resemblance of generated field configuration to the ideal quadrupole field critically depends on the values of current in U-wire and bias magnetic field. The observed number of trapped atoms in the MOT and its position has also been found to depend on the quadrupole field configuration. The number of trapped atoms in the MOT reaches maximum when the field configuration approaches close to an ideal quadrupole field. This study will help in optimising the number in the MOT before transfer of these cold atoms in the atom-chip wire trap.

We propose and demonstrate a laser frequency stabilization scheme which generates a dispersion-like tunable Doppler-free dichroic lock (TDFDL) signal. This signal offers a wide tuning range for lock point (i.e. zero-crossing) without compromising on the slope of the locking signal. The method involves measurement of magnetically induced dichroism in an atomic vapour for a weak probe laser beam in presence of a counter propagating strong pump laser beam. A simple model is presented to explain the basic principles of this method to generate the TDFDL signal. The spectral shift in the locking signal is achieved by tuning the frequency of the pump beam. The TDFDL signal is shown to be useful for locking the frequency of a cooling laser used for magneto-optcal trap (MOT) for $^{87}Rb$ atoms.

We report a velocity selective bi-polarization spectroscopy (VS-BPS) technique to generate a background-free, dispersion-like reference signal which is tunable over a wide range of frequency. In this technique, a pair of linearly polarized weak probe beams passing through a gas cell of metastable Krypton (Kr*) atoms, overlaps with a pair of counter-propagating circularly polarized strong pump beams derived from an independently tunable control laser. The polarization spectroscopy signals from the two probe beams, after subtraction, result in VS-BPS signal. The spectral shifting in VS-BPS signal can be achieved by tuning the frequency of the control laser. The dependence of the amplitude and slope of the VS-BPS signal on the RF power used for excitation of Kr atoms in the gas cell and on the power of pump beams has been studied. The frequency stability of a diode laser locked with VS-BPS signal has been found to be better than the frequency stability of the laser locked with a saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) signal. The VS-BPS signal is finally used for stabilization and tuning of the cooling laser frequency for a magneto-optical trap (MOT) for Kr* atoms.

The fluorescence from the cold $^{85}$Rb atoms of the DMOT is detected by coupling it into the fibre-guided modes of the ONF. The measured fractional population of cold atoms in the bright hyperfine ground state ($p$) is as low as $\sim$0.04. We report on the observation of a Zeeman shift (order of 100 MHz) of the Doppler-broadened D2 transition of both 85Rb and 87Rb isotopes via transmission through a tapered optical nanofiber in the presence of a DC magnetic field. Linearly-polarized light propagating in the nanofiber is analyzed as a superposition of two orthogonally circularly-polarized orientations, σ+ and σ-. In the absence of the magnetic field, the absorption of these polarizations by the atomic vapor, via the evanescent field at the waist of the nanofiber, is degenerate. When a weak magnetic field is applied parallel to the propagating light, this degeneracy is lifted and relative shifts in the resonance frequencies are detected. Typical linear shift rates of 1.6 MHz/G and -2.0 MHz/G were observed. We also demonstrate a dichroic atomic vapor laser lock line shape by monitoring the real-time subtraction of the two magnetically-shifted absorption spectra. This is particularly interesting for magneto-optical experiments as it could be directly implemented for diode laser frequency-stabilization.

We report electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cold 85Rb atoms, trapped in the lower hyperfine level F = 2, of the ground state 5$^{2}S_{1/2}$ (Tiwari V B \textit{et al} 2008 {\it Phys. Rev.} A {\bf 78} 063421). Two steady state $Λ$-type systems of hyperfine energy levels are investigated using probe transitions into the levels F$^{\prime}$ = 2 and F$^{\prime}$ = 3 of the excited state 5$^{2}P_{3/2}$ in the presence of coupling transitions F = 3 $\to$ F$^{\prime}$ = 2 and F = 3 $\to$ F$^{\prime}$ = 3, respectively. The effects of uncoupled magnetic sublevel transitions and coupling field's Rabi frequency on the EIT signal from these systems are studied using a simple theoretical model.
