UHECR mass composition at highest energies from anisotropy of their arrival directions
Abstract: We propose a new method for the estimation of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) mass composition from a distribution of their arrival directions. The method employs a test statistic (TS) based on a characteristic deflection of UHECR events with respect to the distribution of luminous matter in the local Universe. Making realistic simulations of the mock UHECR sets, we show that this TS is robus… ▽ More

A signature of EeV protons of Galactic origin
Abstract: We investigate signatures that would be produced in the spectrum and sky distribution of UHECR by a population of the Galactic sources of high-energy protons in the energy range around 1~EeV, i.e., around the diffusive-to-ballistic transition. In this regime, the CR flux has to be calculated numerically. We employ the approach that consists in backtracking anti-protons from Earth through the Galax… ▽ More

Occupy magnetogenesis
Abstract: The occupation number of a field is a sound discriminator between classical and quantum regimes. In this pamphlet we give an overview of what we can learn about inflationary magnetogenesis just by looking at the occupation numbers of the classical magnetic fields observed today, and those of the quantum electromagnetic field during inflation. The sole occupation number behaviour dictates that for… ▽ More

Black Hole Thermodynamics and Massive Gravity
Abstract: We consider the generalized laws of thermodynamics in massive gravity. Making use of explicit black hole solutions, we devise black hole merger processes in which i) total entropy of the system decreases ii) the zero-temperature extremal black hole is created. Infrared-modified gravities and massive gravitons
Abstract: We review some theoretical and phenomenological aspects of massive gravities in 4 dimensions. We start from the Fierz--Pauli theory with Lorentz-invariant mass terms and then proceed to Lorentz-violating masses. Unlike the former theory, some models with Lorentz-violation have no pathologies in the spectrum in flat and nearly flat backgrounds and lead to interesting phenomenology.

False Vacuum Decay Induced by Particle Collisions
Abstract: The semiclassical formalism for numerical calculation of the rate of tunneling transitions induced by N particles with total energy E of order or higher than the height of the barrier is developed. The formalism is applied to the induced false vacuum decay in the massive four-dimensional $-λφ^4$ model. The decay rate, as a function of E and N, is calculated numerically in the range… ▽ More

What Becomes of Vortices in Theories with Flat Directions
Abstract: In many theories with flat directions of scalar potential, static vortex solutions do not exist for a generic choice of vacuum. In two Euclidean dimensions, we find their substitutes --- constrained instantons consisting of compact core formed by Abrikosov--Nielsen--Olesen vortex and long-ranged cloud of modulus field. In (3+1) dimensions, an initial compact configuration of string topology evol… ▽ More

Numerical Study of Induced False Vacuum Decay at High Energies
Abstract: We calculate numerically the probability $\exp[ {1\overλ} F(E/E_{sph},N/N_{sph})]$ of the false vacuum decay in the massive four-dimensional $-λφ^4$ model from multiparticle initial states with fixed number of particles $N$ and energy $E$ greater than the height of the barrier $E_{sph}$. We find that at $E\lsim 3E_{sph}$ and $N\lsim 0.4N_{sph}$ the decay is classically forbidden and thus is expo… ▽ More

Finite Energy Instantons in the O(3) Non-Linear Sigma Model
Abstract: We consider winding number transitions in the two dimensional O(3) non-linear sigma model, modified by a suitable conformal symmetry breaking term. We discuss the general properties of the relevant instanton solutions which dominate the transition amplitudes at finite energy, and find the solutions numerically. The Euclidean period of the solution increases with energy, contrary to the behavior… ▽ More

Examples of Semiclassical Instanton-Like Scattering: Massless $φ^4$ and SU(2) Gauge Theories
Abstract: Two-parameter sets of solutions to the classical field equations in the massless $φ^4$ model and SU(2) gauge theory are found, each solution presumably describing a multi-particle instanton-like transition at high energy. In the limit of small number of initial particles, the probability of the transition is suppressed by $\exp(-2S_0)$, where $S_0$ is the instanton action.

An Example of Semiclassical Instanton-Like Scattering: (1+1) Dimensional Sigma Model
Abstract: A solution to the classical field equations in the massless (1+1)-dimensional O(3) sigma model is found, which describes a multi-particle instanton-like transition at high energy. In the limit of small number of initial particles, the number of final particles is shown to be also small, and the probability of the transition is suppressed by $\exp(-2S_0)$, where $S_0$ is the instanton action. Thi… ▽ More
