The impact of 400 keV $Ar^+$ ion irradiation on the magnetic and electrical properties of in-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) stacks was investigated by ferromagnetic resonance, vibrating sample magnetometry and current-in-plane tunneling techniques. The irradiation-induced changes of the magnetic anisotropy, coupling energies and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) exhibited a correlated dependence on the ion fluence, which allowed us to distinguish between two irradiation regimes. In the low-fluence regime, $Φ < 10^{14} cm^{-2}$, the parameters required for having a functioning MTJ were preserved: the anisotropy of the FeCoB free layer (FL) was weakly modulated following a small decrease in the saturation magnetization $M_S$; the TMR decreased continuously; the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) and the exchange bias (EB) decreased slightly. In the high-fluence regime, $Φ > 10^{14} cm^{-2}$, the MTJ was rendered inoperative: the modulation of the FL anisotropy was strong, caused by a strong decrease in $M_S$, ascribed to a high degree of interface intermixing between the FL and the Ta cap**; the EB and IEC were also lost, likely due to intermixing of the layers composing the synthetic antiferromagnet; and the TMR vanished due to the irradiation-induced deterioration of the MgO barrier and MgO/FeCoB interfaces. We demonstrate that the layers surrounding the FL play a decisive role in determining the trend of the magnetic anisotropy evolution resulting from the irradiation, and that an ion-fluence window exists where such a modulation of magnetic anisotropy can occur, while not losing the TMR or the magnetic configuration of the MTJ.

Magnetoresistance loops under in-plane applied field were measured on perpendicularly magnetized magnetic tunnel junction (pMTJ) pillars with nominal diameters ranging from 50 to 150 nm. By fitting the hard-axis magnetoresistance loops to an analytical model, the effective anisotropy fields in both free and reference layers were derived and their variations in temperature range between 340K and 5K were determined. It is found that an accurate fitting is possible only if a second-order anisotropy term of the form $-K_{2}cos^4θ$, is added to the fitting model. This higher order contribution exists both in the free and reference layers and its sign is opposite to that of the first order anisotropy constant, $K_{1}$. At room temperatures the estimated $-K_{2}/K_{1}$ ratios are 0.1 and 0.24 for the free and reference layers, respectively. The ratio is more than doubled at low temperatures altering the ground state of the reference layer from 'easy-axis' to 'easy-cone' regime. Easy-cone state has clear signatures in the shape of the hard-axis magnetoresistance loops. The same behavior was observed in all measured devices regardless of their diameter. The existence of this higher order anisotropy was confirmed experimentally on FeCoB/MgO sheet films by ferromagnetic resonance technique. It is of interfacial nature and is believed to be linked to spatial fluctuations at the nanoscale of the anisotropy parameter at the FeCoB/MgO interface, in agreement with Dieny-Vedyayev model.

The relative contributions of in-plane (dam**-like) and out-of-plane (field-like) spin-transfer-torques in the magnetization switching of out-of-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junctions (pMTJ) has been theoretically analyzed using the transformed Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation with the STT terms. It is demonstrated that in a pMTJ structure obeying macrospin dynamics, the out-of-plane torque influences the precession frequency but it does not contribute significantly to the STT switching process (in particular to the switching time and switching current density), which is mostly determined by the in-plane STT contribution. This conclusion is confirmed by finite temperature and finite writing pulse macrospin simulations of the current-field switching diagrams. It contrasts with the case of STT-switching in in-plane magnetized MTJ in which the field-like term also influences the switching critical current. This theoretical analysis was successfully applied to the interpretation of voltage-field STT switching diagrams experimentally measured on perpendicular MTJ pillars 36 nm in diameter, which exhibit macrospin-like behavior. The physical nonequivalence of Landau and Gilbert dissipation terms in presence of STT-induced dynamics is also discussed.

Two ferromagnetic layers magnetically decoupled by a thick normal metal spacer layer can be, nevertheless, dynamically coupled via spin currents emitted by the spin-pump and absorbed through the spin-torque effects at the neighboring interfaces. A decrease of dam** in both layers due to a partial compensation of the angular momentum leakage in each layer was previously observed at the coincidence of the two ferromagnetic resonances. In case of non-zero magnetic coupling, such a dynamic exchange will depend on the mutual precession of the magnetic moments in the layers. A difference in the linewidth of the resonance peaks is expected for the acoustic and optical regimes of precession. However, the interlayer coupling hybridizes the resonance responses of the layers and therefore can also change their linewidths. The interplay between the two mechanisms has never been considered before. In the present work, the joint influence of the hybridization and non-local dam** on the linewidth has been studied in weakly coupled NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/MnIr spin-valve multilayers. It has been found that the dynamic exchange by spin currents is different in the optical and acoustic modes, and this difference is dependent on the interlayer coupling strength. In contrast to the acoustic precession mode, the dynamic exchange in the optical mode works as an additional dam** source. A simulation in the framework of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert formalism for two ferromagnetic layers coupled magnetically and by spin currents has been done to separate the effects of the non-local dam** from the resonance modes hybridization. In our samples both mechanisms bring about linewidth changes of the same order of magnitude, but lead to a distinctly different angular behavior. The obtained results are relevant for a broad class of coupled magnetic multilayers with ballistic regime of the spin transport.

The Hall effect in InMnAs layers with MnAs inclusions of 20-50 nm in size is studied both theoretically and experimentally. We find that the anomalous Hall effect can be explained by the Lorentz force caused by the magnetic field of ferromagnetic inclusions and by an inhomogeneous distribution of the current density in the layer. The hysteretic dependence of the average magnetization of ferromagnetic inclusions on an external magnetic field results in a hysteretic dependence of RH(Hext). Thus we show the possibility of a hysteretic RH(Hext) dependence (i.e. observation of the anomalous Hall effect) in thin conductive layers with ferromagnetic inclusions in the absence of carriers spin polarization.

A trilayer of Metglas/PMN-PT/Metglas prepared in the same way was used as a reference. Though PMN-PT has much larger charge piezocoefficients than LiNbO3 (LNO), the direct magnetoelectric voltage coefficient is found to be comparable in both trilayers due to the much lower dielectric permittivity of LNO. The magnitude of the direct magnetoelectric effect in the LNO trilayers is about 0.4 V/cm*Oe in the quasistatic regime and about 90 V/cm*Oe at electromechanical resonance. Calculations show that the magnetoelectric properties can be significantly improved (up to 500 V/cm*Oe) via controlling the cut angle of LNO, choosing the appropriate thickness ratio of the ferroelectric/ferromagnetic layers, and a better bonding between Metglas and LNO. Advantages of using LiNbO3-type ferroelectrics in magnetoelectric composites are discussed.

We report magnetostatic measurements for granulated films (CoFeB)$_{x}$-(SiO$_{2}$)$_{1-x}$ with fabrication induced intraplanar anisotropy. The measurements have been performed in the film plane in the wide temperature interval 4.5$÷$300 K. They demonstrate that above films have low-temperature anomaly below the percolation threshold for conductivity. The essence of the above peculiarity is that below 100 K the temperature dependence of coercive field for magnetization along easy direction deviates strongly from Neel-Brown law. At temperature lowering, the sharp increase of coercivity is observed, accompanied by the appearance of coercive field for magnetization along hard direction in the film plane. We establish that observed effect is related to the properties of individual ferromagnetic granules. The effect weakens as granules merge into conglomerates at $x$ higher then percolation threshold and disappears completely at $x>1$. We explain the above effect as a consequence of the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of granule and cover material. At temperature lowering this difference weakens the envelopment of an individual granule by the cover matrix material, thus permitting to realize the spontaneous magnetostriction of a granule. The latter induces an additional anisotropy with new easy axis of a granule magnetization along the external magnetic field direction. Our explanation is tested and corroborated by the ferromagnetic resonance measurements in the films at $T$ = 300 K and $T$ = 77 K.

We consider the influence of interparticle interaction on the magnetization reversal in the oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth nanoparticles ensemble. To do so, we solve a kinetic equation for the relaxation of the overall ensemble magnetization to its equilibrium value in some effective mean field. Latter field consists of external magnetic field and interaction mean field proportional to the instantaneous value of above magnetization. We show that the interparticle interaction influences the temperature dependence of a coercive field. This influence manifests itself in the noticeable coercivity at $T>T_{b}$ ($T_{b}$ is so-called blocking temperature). The above interaction can also lead to a formation of the "superferromagnetic" state with correlated directions of particle magnetic moments at $T>T_{b}$. This state possesses coercivity if the overall magnetization has a component directed along the easy axis of each particle. We have shown that the coercive field in the "superferromagnetic" state does not depend on measuring time. This time influences both $T_{b}$ and the temperature dependence of coercive field at $T<T_{b}$. We corroborate our theoretical results by measurements on nanogranular films (CoFeB)$_{x}$-(SiO$_{2}$)$_{1-x}$ with concentration of ferromagnetic particles close, but below percolation threshold.

The effect of a measurement time duration on the parameters of magnetization curves for an ensemble of identical noninteracting single-domain particles with equally oriented axes under the uniaxial anisotropy has been specifed for different experiment modes, in particular for the cases of relaxation measurements and the continuous sweep of a static magnetic field. The relation between a blocking temperature and experiment characteristics has been found for these modes. A recursion method to calculate the magnetization reversal curves for such an ensemble of particles is proposed. By comparing the results of calculations of the magnetic properties by the recursion and Monte-Carlo methods, an algorithm to establish the relation between the equivalent measurement time and such parameters of the Monte-Carlo method as the number of steps and the value of aperture is suggested.
