The authors present a review of the systematic studies of the structure of macroscopically planar thin films at the air-liquid interface (water, alkali solution and silica hydrosol). A common feature of the considered works is the application of a model-independent approach to the analysis of X-ray reflectometry data, which does not require a priori assumptions about the structure of the object under study. It is shown that the experimental results obtained with the laboratory source in some cases are qualitatively on par with the results of those obtained with the use of synchrotron radiation source. The reproducibility of the effect of spontaneous ordering in films of amphiphilic organic molecules (phospholipids) at the surface of the colloidal solution of silica nanoparticles is demonstrated. The possibility of influencing the kinetics of the in situ formation of a phospholipid film by enriching the liquid substrate with alkali metal ions is also discussed.

The structure of an adsorption octadecanamide film at the planar toluene-water interface is studied by X-ray reflectometry using synchrotron radiation with photon energy of 15 keV. The electron density (polarizability) profiles, according to which the interface structure is determined by the pH level in the water subphase, are reconstructed from experimental data with the help of a model-independent approach. For a high pH~11, the adsorption film is a crystalline octadecanamide monolayer with a thickness of about 2.6 nm, in which aliphatic tails of surfactant are extended along the normal to the surface. For low pH ~ 2, the thickness of the surface structure consisting of the crystalline monolayer directly on the toluene-water interface and a thick layer of deposited octadecanamide micelles reaches about 50 nm. In our opinion, the condensation of nonionogenic surfactant micelles for which the surface concentration of the surfactant increases significantly is caused by a change in the polarization direction upon a decrease in the pH level in the electric double layer at the interface between the water subphase and the octadecanamide monolayer. The shape of the reconstructed electron density profiles also indicates the existence of a plane of the closest approach of surfactant micelles to the interface at a distance of about 7 nm from it.

The effect of the adsorption of a polypeptide on the lateral interaction of dimyristoylphosphatidylserine molecules in different phase states on the surface of a 10\,mM KCl aqueous solution has been studied. Changes in the surface pressure and Volta potential induced by the adsorption of large poly-D-lysine molecules (about 200 links in a chain) have been determined at different areas per lipid molecule in a monolayer. The adsorption of macromolecules noticeably increases the elasticity of the monolayer under lateral compression in the liquid expanded state of lipid and reduces the effective dipole moment from 0.48 to 0.38 D. These properties are in qualitative agreement with X-ray reflectometry data for the lipid monolayer obtained with synchrotron radiation with a photon energy of 70 keV. The electron density profiles perpendicular to the surface of the aqueous subphase have been reconstructed from reflectometry data within a model approach to the structure of an interface with two and three layers. These profiles indicate the existence of a wide diffuse polymer layer 150+/-40 Angstrom in width at the interface of the monolayer in both the liquid expanded and liquid condensed states. A decrease in the area per molecule in the monolayer by a factor of 2 results in the doubling of the surface density of the macromolecule film. The adsorption of the polymer also affects the integral density of the layer of polar phospholipid groups, which decreases by a factor of ~ 2 in the liquid expanded phase and by ~ 30% in the liquid condensed phase.

The structure of the soluble protonated (pH=2) octadecanoic acid film adsorbed on the saturated hydrocarbon (n-hexane) - water and aromatic hydrocarbon (toluene)-water interfaces is studied by X-ray reflectometry using synchrotron radiation. The experimental data demonstrate that a solid phase of a Gibbs monolayer (26 +/- 1) Angstrom thick, in which aliphatic tails are perpendicular to the surface and the area per molecule is A=(18 +/- 2) Angstrom^2, forms in the film at the n-hexane - water interface. The solid monolayer on the toluene - water interface in the adsorbed film melts when temperature increases, and this transition is caused by disordering the hydrocarbon tails of the acid. During the solid - liquid transition, the Gibbs monolayer thickness remains almost the same, (22 +/- 1) Angstrom. In the solid phase, we have A=(20+/- 2) Angstrom^2 and the angle of deviation of the molecular tails from the normal to the surface is about ~ 30 deg. The density of the liquid monolayer phase with A=(24 +/- 2) Angstrom^2 corresponds to liquid n-octadecane.

According to the experimental data, the width of the interface under normal conditions is (5.7 +/- 0.2) Angstrom. This value is much larger than a theoretical value of (3.9 +/- 0.1) Angstrom predicted by the theory of capillary waves with an interphase tension of (36.0 +/- 0.1) mN/m. The observed broadening of the interface is attributed to its own diffuse near-surface structure with a width no less than 4 Angstroms, which is about the value previously discussed for high-molecular-weight n-alkane - water and 1,2-dichloroethane - water interfaces.

Electron density profiles in the direction perpendicular to the surface have been reconstructed from experimental data and spectra of the correlation function of heights in the surface plane have been obtained. The revealed deviation of the integral and frequency characteristics of the roughness spectra of the silica sol surface from predictions of the capillary-wave theory is of a fundamental character. This deviation is due to the contribution from roughnesses with low spatial frequencies and to the interference of diffuse scattering from different layer interfaces of the surface structure.

The molecular structure of dimyristoyl phosphatidylserine (DMPS) monolayers on a water substrate in different phase states has been investigated under normal conditions by X-ray reflectometry with a photon energy of ~ 8 keV. According to the experimental data, the transition from a two-dimensional expanded liquid state to a solid gel state (liquid crystal) accompanied by the ordering of the hydrocarbon tails of the DMPS molecule occurs in the monolayer as the surface pressure rises. The monolayer thickness is (20 +/- 3) Angstrom and (28 +/- 2) Angstrom in the liquid and solid phases, respectively, with the deflection angle of the molecular tail axis from the normal to the surface in the gel phase being (26 +/- 8) deg. At least a twofold decrease in the degree of hydration of the polar lipid groups also occurs under two-dimensional monolayer compression. The reflectometry data have been analyzed using two approaches: under the assumption about the presence of two layers with different electron densities in the monolayer and without any assumptions about the transverse surface structure. Both approaches demonstrate satisfactory agreement between themselves in describing the experimental results.

The spectral parameters indicate that the magnetic structure of manganese garnet differs slightly from the exchange triangular 120-degree structure. The anisotropy of the spin reduction and (or) weak antiferromagnetism that are allowed by the crystal symmetry lead to the difference of approximately 3% in the magnetization of sublattices in the field H < Hc. When the spin plane rotates from the orientation perpendicular to the C3 axis to the orientation perpendicular to the C4 axis, all magnetic moments of the electronic subsystem decrease by approximately 2% from the average value in the zero field.

The structure of the transient layer at the interface between air and the aqueous solution of silica nanoparticles with the size distribution of particles that has been determined from small-angle scattering has been studied by the X-ray reflectometry method. The reconstructed depth profile of the polarizability of the substance indicates the presence of a structure consisting of several layers of nanoparticles with the thickness that is more than twice as large as the thickness of the previously described structure. The adsorption of 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine molecules at the hydrosol/air interface is accompanied by the condensation of anion silica nanoparticles at the interface. This phenomenon can be qualitatively explained by the formation of the positive surface potential due to the penetration and accumulation of Na+ cations in the phospholipid membrane.

This study of adsorption of normal alkanols at the oil/water interface with x-ray reflectivity and tensiometry demonstrates that the liquid to gas monolayer phase transition at the hexane/water interface is thermodynamically favorable only for long-chain alkanols. As the alkanol chain length is decreased, the change in excess interfacial entropy per area decreases to zero. Systems with small values of excess interfacial entropy form multi-molecular layers at the interface instead of the monolayer formed by systems with much larger excess interfacial entropy. Substitution of n-hexane by n-hexadecane significantly alters the interfacial structure for a given alkanol surfactant, but this substitution does not change fundamentally the phase transition behavior of the monolayers. These data show that the critical alkanol carbon number, at which the change in excess interfacial entropy per area decreases to zero, is approximately six carbons larger than the number of carbons in the alkane solvent molecules.

The observed structure of the compact layer is almost independent of the size of the particles and concentration of alkali base in the sol; it can be described by a two-layer model, i.e., an ~ 8 Angstrom thick layer of directly adsorbed hydrated alkali ions with a surface concentration 3x10(18) m(-2), and a ~ 13 Angstrom thick layer with a surface concentration of sodium ions 8x10(18) m(-2). In cesium-enriched sols, Cs+ ions preferentially adsorb in the first layer replacing Na+; their density in the second layer does not depend on the presence of cesium in the sol. The difference in the adsorption of Cs+ and Na+ ions can be explained by the ion-size-dependent term in the electrostatic Gibbs energy equation derived earlier by others. I also discuss the surface charge density and the value of surface tension at the sol's surface.

The spatial structure of the transition region between an insulator and an electrolyte solution was studied with x-ray scattering. The electron density profile across the n-hexane/silica sol interface (solutions with 5-nm, 7-nm, and 12-nm colloidal particles) agrees with the theory of the electrical double layer and shows separation of positive and negative charges. The interface consists of three layers, i.e., a compact layer of Na+, a loose monolayer of nanocolloidal particles as part of a thick diffuse layer, and a low-density layer sandwiched between them. Its structure is described by a model in which the potential gradient at the interface reflects the difference in the potentials of "image forces" between the cationic Na+ and anionic nanoparticles and the specific adsorption of surface charge. The density of water in the large electric field (1-10 GV/m) of the transition region and the layering of silica in the diffuse layer is discussed.
