We discuss a general prototypical constrained Hamiltonian system with a broad application in quantum field theory and similar contexts where dynamics is defined through a functional action obeying a stationarity principle. The prototypical model amounts to a Dirac-Bergmann singular system, whose constraints restrict the actual dynamics to occur within a differential submanifold, as is the case in the major part of field theoretical models with gauge symmetry. We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm in its full generality unraveling a total of $4m$ second-class constraints and obtain the corresponding Dirac brackets algebra in phase space. We follow with the Faddeev-Jackiw-Barcelos-Wotzasek approach in which the geometric character of the mentioned submanifold is emphasized by means of an internal metric function encoding its symplectic properties. We consider two straightforward examples, applying our general results to constrained motion along a toroidal geometry and to a Lorentz violating toy model in field theory. Since toroidal geometry has been recently used in cosmological models, we suggest how our results could lead to different proposals for the shape of the universe in cosmology.

Additionally, we discuss the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) theory, a modification of Newton's second law aimed at explaining galaxy rotation curves without resorting to dark matter. Furthermore, we consider the Bekenstein bound conjecture which imposes an upper limit on the entropy of confined quantum systems. We analyze this conjecture in the context of a modified Kaniadakis entropy and find that it holds for typical values of $κ$, as evidenced by our numerical investigation. Our exploration underscores the potential of a modified Kaniadakis statistics in understanding diverse physical phenomena, from gravitational systems to quantum mechanics, offering a promising direction for future research at the intersection of statistical mechanics and other important areas of physics as well.

We discuss the divergent graviton propagator massless limit problem in $D=26$ and show how it can be rigorously approached by interconnecting distinct gauge-fixed Siegel-Zwiebach generating functionals from string theory in the critical dimension through proper finite-field-dependent BRST (FFBRST) transformations. The massive Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian can be obtained from the gauge-invariant Siegel-Zwiebach one in the unitary gauge as a particular case, however suffering from the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity and possessing a ill-defined propagator in the massless limit. Nevertheless, alternatively working in a more suitable generalized Lorenz type gauge, including the transverse-traceless case, the graviton propagator for the Siegel-Zwiebach Lagrangian in the massless limit can be made finite. Gauge attainability and nilpotent BRST symmetries are explicitly worked out. We write down the complete corresponding generating functional, including the ghosts sector, and construct a convenient FFBRST transformation connecting the unitary gauge to a new bi-parametrized class of gauge-fixings containing the transverse traceless case. By taking into account the corresponding change in the Feynman integral Jacobian, a finite massless continuous limit propagator is achieved and fully justified.

We analyze the Hamiltonian structure of an extended chiral bosons theory in which the self-dual constraint is introduced via a control $α$-parameter. The system has two second-class constraints in the non-critical regime and an additional one in the critical regime. We use a modified gauge unfixing formalism to derive a first-class system, disclosing hidden symmetries. To this end, we choose one of the second-class constraints to build a corresponding gauge symmetry generator. The worked out procedure converts second-class variables into first-class ones allowing the lifting of gauge symmetry. Any function of these GU variables will also be invariant. We obtain the GU Hamiltonian and Lagrangian densities in a generalized context containing the Srivastava and Floreanini-Jackiw models as particular cases. Additionally, we observe that the resulting GU Lagrangian presents similarities to the Siegel invariant Lagrangian which is known to be suitable for describing chiral bosons theory with classical gauge invariance, however broken at quantum level. The final results signal a possible equivalence between our invariant Lagrangian obtained from the modified GU formalism and the Siegel invariant Lagrangian, with a distinct gauge symmetry.

We use the gauge unfixing (GU) formalism framework in a two dimensional noncommutative chiral bosons (NCCB) model to disclose new hidden symmetries. That amounts to converting a second-class system to a first-class one without adding any extra degrees of freedom in phase space. The NCCB model has two second-class constraints -- one of them turns out as a gauge symmetry generator while the other one, considered as a gauge-fixing condition, is disregarded in the converted gauge-invariant system. We show that it is possible to apply a conversion technique based on the GU formalism direct to the second-class variables present in the NCCB model, constructing deformed gauge-invariant GU variables, a procedure which we name here as modified GU formalism. For the canonical analysis in noncommutative phase space, we compute the deformed Dirac brackets between all original phase space variables. We obtain two different gauge invariant versions for the NCCB system and, in each case, a GU Hamiltonian is derived satisfying a corresponding first-class algebra. Finally, the phase space partition function is presented for each case allowing for a consistent functional quantization for the obtained gauge-invariant NCCB.

In this paper, the Hamiltonian structure of the bosonized chiral Schwinger model (BCSM) is analyzed. From the consistency condition of the constraints obtained from the Dirac method, we can observe that this model presents, for certain values of the $α$ parameter, two second-class constraints, which means that this system does not possess gauge invariance. However, we know that it is possible to disclose gauge symmetries in such a system by converting the original second-class system into a first-class one. This procedure can be done through the gauge unfixing (GU) formalism by acting with a projection operator directly on the original second-class Hamiltonian, without adding any extra degrees of freedom in the phase space. One of the constraints becomes the gauge symmetry generator of the theory and the other one is disregarded. At the end, we have a first-class Hamiltonian satisfying a first-class algebra. Here, our goal is to apply a new scheme of embedding second-class constrained systems based on the GU formalism, named improved GU formalism, in the BCSM. The original second-class variables are directly converted into gauge invariant variables, called GU variables. We have verified that the Poisson brackets involving the GU variables are equal to the Dirac brackets between the original second-class variables. Finally, we have found that our improved GU variables coincide with those obtained from an improved BFT method after a particular choice for the Wess-Zumino terms.

The prototypical system is chosen to represent a considerable class of relevant models in field theory. By considering the improved version of the GU formalism, we show that any gauge-invariant function can be obtained in terms of a specific deformation in phase space, benefiting thus from the fact that no auxiliary variables are needed in the process. In this way, the resulting converted first-class system is constructed out of the same original canonical variables, preserving the number of degrees of freedom. Similarities and differences among ordinary BRST, anti-BRST, dual-BRST and anti-dual-BRST symmetries are highlighted and discussed. We identify a precise $\mathbb{Z}_4\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ discrete group of symmetries of the ghost sector, responsible for connecting the various forms of BRST transformations. Considering a Hamiltonian approach, those symmetries can be interrelated by canonical transformations among ghost variables. However, the distinguished characteristic role of the dual BRST symmetries can be fully appreciated within a gauge-fixed Lagrangian viewpoint. New forms of BRST symmetries are given, a set generalizing particular ones previously reported in the literature as well as a brand new unprecedented set. The featured gauge invariant prototypical first-class system encompasses an extensive class of physical models and sheds light on previous controversies in the current quantum field theory literature.

By exhibiting a suitable integration factor, we obtain the general solution for the associated non-linear differential equations. We perform the canonical quantization in a consistent way in terms of the corresponding Dirac brackets. We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm to unravel and classify the whole internal constraints structure inherent to its dynamical Hamiltonian description, obtain the proper extended Hamiltonian function, determine the Lagrange multiplier and compute all relevant Poisson brackets among the constraints, Hamiltonian and Lagrange multiplier. We obtain the propagator of all fields present in the model for the higher-order generalizations of the linear covariant, light-front and doubly transverse light-front gauges. Although BP's original model is described by a higher-order derivatives Lagrangian, it is possible to work with an equivalent reduced-order version by means of the introduction of an auxiliary vector field. We compute the gauge-invariant improved energy-momentum tensor for the full reduced-order interacting BP model. Besides the more traditional front-form view, we also discuss the light-front perspective in both versions of the model. Within a Lagrangian framework approach we maintain explicit covariance at all steps and show that the field propagators, as well as the energy-momentum tensor, can be cast into a light-front closed form using specific properties of general coordinate transformations.

A first-order gauge invariant formulation for the two-dimensional quantum rigid rotor is long known in the theoretical physics community as an isolated peculiar model. Parallel to that fact, the longstanding constraints abelianization problem, aiming at the conversion from second to first class systems for quantization purposes, has been approached a number of times in the literature with a handful of different forms and techniques and still continues to be a source of lively and interesting discussions. Connecting these two points, we develop a new systematic method for converting second class systems to first class ones, valid for a class of systems encompassing the quantum rigid rotor as a special case. In particular the gauge invariance of the quantum rigid rotor is fully clarified and generalized in the context of arbitrary translations along the radial momentum direction. Our method differs substantially from previous ones as it does not rely neither on the introduction of new auxiliary variables nor on the a priori interpretation of the second class constraints as coming from a gauge-fixing process.

Introducing gauge-fixing terms for Bopp-Podolsky's generalized electrodynamic action, we realize a unique feature for the corresponding photon propagator with a built-in Pauli-Villars regularization independent of the gauge choice made in Maxwell's usual electromagnetism. According to our realization, the length dimensional parameter $a$ associated with Bopp-Podolsky's higher order derivatives corresponds to the inverse of the Pauli-Villars regularization mass scale $Λ$, i.e. $a = 1/Λ$. Solving explicitly the classical static Bopp-Podolsky's equations of motion for a specific charge distribution, we explore the physical meaning of the parameter $a$ in terms of the size of the charge distribution. As an offspring of the generalized photon propagator analysis, we also discuss our findings regarding on the issue of the two-term vs. three-term photon propagator in light-front dynamics.

We consider a second degree algebraic curve describing a general conic constraint imposed on the motion of a massive spinless particle. The problem is trivial at classical level but becomes involved and interesting in its quantum counterpart with subtleties in its symplectic structure and symmetries. The model is used here to investigate quantization issues related to the Hamiltonian constraint structure, Dirac brackets, gauge symmetry and BRST transformations. We pursue the complete constraint analysis in phase space and perform the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic quantization following the Barcelos-Wotzasek iteration program to unravel the fine tuned and more relevant aspects of the constraint structure. A comparison with the longer usual Dirac-Bergmann algorithm, still more well established in the literature, is also presented. While in the standard DB approach there are four second class constraints, in the FJBW they reduce to two. By using the symplectic potential obtained in the last step of the FJBW iteration process we construct a gauge invariant model exhibiting explicitly its BRST symmetry. Our results reproduce and neatly generalize the known BRST symmetry of the rigid rotor showing that it constitutes a particular case of a broader class of theories.

We perform the canonical and path integral quantizations of a lower-order derivatives model describing Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics. The physical content of the model shows an auxiliary massive vector field coupled to the usual electromagnetic field. The equivalence with Podolsky's original model is studied at classical and quantum levels. Concerning the dynamical time evolution we obtain a theory with two first-class and two second-class constraints in phase space. We calculate explicitly the corresponding Dirac brackets involving both vector fields. We use the Senjanovic procedure to implement the second-class constraints and the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky path integral quantization scheme to deal with the symmetries generated by the first-class constraints. The physical interpretation of the results turns out to be simpler due to the reduced derivatives order permeating the equations of motion, Dirac brackets and effective action.

The possibility that nonlocal operators might be added to the Yang-Mills action is investigated. We point out that there exists a class of nonlocal operators which lead to renormalizable gauge theories. These operators turn out to be localizable by means of the introduction of auxiliary fields. The renormalizability is thus ensured by the symmetry content exhibited by the resulting local theory. The example of the nonlocal operator $\int A \frac{1}{D^2} A $ is analysed in detail. A few remarks on the possible role that these operators might have for confining theories are outlined.

We pursue the study of SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge by taking into account the effects of the Gribov horizon. The Gribov approximation, previously introduced in [1], is improved through the introduction of the horizon function, which is constructed under the requirements of localizability and renormalizability. By following Zwanziger's treatment of the horizon function in the Landau gauge, we prove that, when cast in local form, the horizon term of the maximal Abelian gauge leads to a quantized theory which enjoys multiplicative renormalizability, a feature which is established to all orders by means of the algebraic renormalization. Furthermore, it turns out that the horizon term is compatible with the local residual U(1) Ward identity, typical of the maximal Abelian gauge, which is easily derived. As a consequence, the nonrenormalization theorem, Z_{g}Z_{A}^{1/2}=1, relating the renormalization factors of the gauge coupling constant Z_{g} and of the diagonal gluon field Z_{A}, still holds in the presence of the Gribov horizon. Finally, we notice that a generalized dimension two gluon operator can be also introduced. It is BRST invariant on-shell, a property which ensures its multiplicative renormalizability. Its anomalous dimension is not an independent parameter of the theory, being obtained from the renormalization factors of the gauge coupling constant and of the diagonal antighost field.

By following Gribov's original approach, extended to the maximal Abelian gauge, we are able to show that the diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the characteristic Gribov type behavior. The off-diagonal component is found to be of the Yukawa type, with a dynamical mass originating from the dimension two gluon condensate, which is also taken into account. Furthermore, the off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits infrared enhancement. Finally, we make a comparison with available lattice data.

We report on some recent analytical results on the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge (MAG). This gauge is of particular interest for the dual superconductivity picture to explain color confinement. Two kinds of effects are taken into account: those arising from a treatment of Gribov copies in the MAG and those arising from a dynamical mass originating in a dimension two gluon condensate. The diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the typical Gribov-type behaviour, while the off-diagonal component is of the Yukawa type due to the dynamical mass. These results are in qualitative agreement with available lattice data on the gluon propagators. The off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits an infrared enhancement due to the Gribov restriction, while the diagonal one remains unaffected.

Abstract:
A class of covariant gauges allowing one to interpolate between the Landau, the maximal Abelian, the linear covariant and the Curci-Ferrari gauges is discussed. Multiplicative renormalizability is proven to all orders by means of algebraic renormalization. All one-loop anomalous dimensions of the fields and gauge parameters are explicitly evaluated in the MSbar scheme.

This assures that the gauge symmetries which arise from the BFFT procedure are not obstructed at quantum level. An example where massive electrodynamics is coupled to chiral fermions is considered. We solve the quantum master equation for the model and show that the respective counterterm has a decisive role in extracting anomalous expectation values associated with the divergence of the Noether chiral current.

Abstract:
In the generalized Schwinger model the vector and axial vector currents are linearly coupled, with arbitrary coefficients, to the gauge connection. Therefore it represents an interesting example of a theory where both gauge anomalies and anomalous diver gences of global currents show up in general. We derive results for these two kinds of quantum corrections inside the field antifield framework.

Possible quantum obstructions to the process of Abelian conversion

Abstract:
The procedure for Abelian conversion of second class constraints due to Batalin, Fradkin, Fradkina and Tyutin is considered at quantum level, by using the field-antifield formalism. It is argued that quantum effects can obstruct the process. In this case, Wess-Zumino fields may be introduced in order to restore the lost symmetries.
