We compare theoretical results for electron spin resonance (ESR) properties of the Heisenberg-Ising Hamiltonian with ESR experiments on the quasi-one-dimensional magnet Cu(py)$_2$Br$_2$ (CPB). Our measurements were performed over a wide frequency and temperature range giving insight into spin dynamics, spin structure, and magnetic anisotropy of this compound. By analyzing the angular dependence of ESR parameters (resonance shift and linewidth) at room temperature we show that the two weakly coupled inequivalent spin chain types inside the compound are well described by Heisenberg-Ising chains with their magnetic anisotropy axes perpendicular to the chain direction and almost perpendicular to each other. We further determine the full $g$-tensor from these data. In addition, the angular dependence of the linewidth at high temperatures gives us access to the exponent of the algebraic decay of a dynamical correlation function of the isotropic Heisenberg chain. From the temperature dependence of static susceptibilities we extract the strength of the exchange coupling ($J/k_B = 52.0\,\text{K}$) and the anisotropy parameter ($δ\approx -0.02$) of the model Hamiltonian. An independent compatible value of $δ$ is obtained by comparing the exact prediction for the resonance shift at low temperatures with high-frequency ESR data recorded at $4\,\text{K}$. The spin structure in the ordered state implied by the two (almost) perpendicular anisotropy axes is in accordance with the propagation vector determined from neutron scattering experiments. In addition to undoped samples we study the impact of partial substitution of Br by Cl ions on spin dynamics. From the dependence of the ESR linewidth on do** level we infer an effective decoupling of the anisotropic component $Jδ$ from the isotropic exchange $J$ in these systems.

Abstract:
Pressure-induced ordering close to a $z=1$ quantum critical point is studied in the presence of bond disorder in the quantum spin system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_{x}$)$_6$ (PHCX) by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation. As for the pure system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$, pressure allows PHCX with small levels of disorder ($x\leq 7.5\%$) to be driven through a quantum critical point separating a low-pressure quantum paramagnetic phase from magnetic order at high pressures. However, the pressure-induced ordered state is highly inhomogeneous for disorder concentrations $x>1\%$. This behavior might be related to the formation of a quantum Griffiths phase above a critical disorder concentration $7.5\%<x_{\rm c}<15\%$. Br-substitution increases the critical pressure and suppresses critical temperatures and ordered moment sizes.

Abstract:
Muon spin rotation technique is used to study magnetic ordering in ultra-pure samples of SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$, an archetypical $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a small amount of $S=1$ defects. The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amou…

The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~\% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. The results are compared to previous theoretical studies of weakly coupled spin chains with site-defects.

Long range magnetic ordering in the quasi-one-dimensional random-bond antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$)$_2$O$_7$ is studied in $μ$SR experiments as a function of disorder strength. Compared to the disorder-free parent materials, the saturation ordered moment is found to be considerably reduced. Moreover, even in weakly disordered species, the magnetically ordered state is shown to be highly inhomogeneous. The results are interpreted in terms of weakly coupled random spin chains, governed by the ``infinite randomness`` fixed point.

An additional phase transition to a different ordered phase is observed at $P_1\sim 13.4$ kbar. The data indicate that the high-pressure phase may be a commensurate one. The established $(P-T)$ phase diagram reveals the corresponding pressure-induced multicritical point at $P_1$, $T_1=2.0$ K.

The influence of bond randomness on long range magnetic ordering in the weakly coupled S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain materials Cu(py)2(Cl1-xBrx)2 is studied by muon spin rotation and bulk measurements. Disorder is found to have a strong effect on the ordering temperature TN, and an even stronger one on the saturation magnetization m0, but considerably more so in the effectively lower-dimensional Br-rich materials. The observed behavior is attributed to Random Singlet ground states of individual spin chains, but remains in contradiction with chain mean field theory predictions. In this context, we discuss the possibility of a universal distribution of ordered moments in the weakly coupled Random Singlet chains model.
