Consider a uniformly distributed random linear subspace $L$ and a stochastically independent random affine subspace $E$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, both of fixed dimension. For a natural class of distributions for $E$ we show that the intersection $L\cap E$ admits a density with respect to the invariant measure. This density depends only on the distance $d(o,E \cap L)$ of $L\cap E$ to the origin and is derived explicitly. It can be written as the product of a power of $d(o,E \cap L)$ and a part involving an incomplete beta integral. Choosing $E$ uniformly among all affine subspaces of fixed dimension hitting the unit ball, we derive an explicit density for the random variable $d(o,E \cap L)$ and study the behavior of the probability that $E \cap L$ hits the unit ball in high dimensions. Lastly, we show that our result can be extended to the setting where $E$ is tangent to the unit sphere, in which case we again derive the density for $d(o,E \cap L)$. Our probabilistic results are derived by means of a new integral-geometric transformation formula of Blaschke--Petkantschin type.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the new concept of weighted floating functions associated with log concave or $s$-concave functions. This leads to new notions of weighted functional affine surface areas. Their relation to more traditional versions of functional affine surface areas as well as to the classical affine surface areas for convex bodies is discussed in detail.

Under the assumption that the roots of these polynomials are either all real or all lie on the unit circle in the complex plane, a quantitative normal approximation bound for $X_n$ is established in a unified way. In the real rooted case the result is classical and only involves the variances of $X_n$, while in the cyclotomic case the fourth cumulants or moments of $X_n$ appear in addition. The proofs are elementary and based on the Stein-Tikhomirov method.

We prove a large deviation principle for the point process of large Poisson $k$-nearest neighbor balls in hyperbolic space. More precisely, we consider a stationary Poisson point process of unit intensity in a growing sampling window in hyperbolic space. We further take a growing sequence of thresholds such that there is a diverging expected number of Poisson points whose $k$-nearest neighbor ball has a volume exceeding this threshold. Then, the point process of exceedances satisfies a large deviation principle whose rate function is described in terms of a relative entropy. The proof relies on a fine coarse-graining technique such that inside the resulting blocks the exceedances are approximated by independent Poisson point processes.

Poisson processes in the space of $k$-dimensional totally geodesic subspaces ($k$-flats) in a $d$-dimensional standard space of constant curvature $κ\in\{-1,0,1\}$ are studied, whose distributions are invariant under the isometries of the space. We consider the intersection processes of order $m$ together with their $(d-m(d-k))$-dimensional Hausdorff measure within a geodesic ball of radius $r$. Asymptotic normality for fixed $r$ is shown as the intensity of the underlying Poisson process tends to infinity for all $m$ satisfying $d-m(d-k)\geq 0$. For $κ\in\{-1,0\}$ the problem is also approached in the set-up where the intensity is fixed and $r$ tends to infinity. Again, if $2k\le d+1$ a central limit theorem is shown for all possible values of $m$. However, while for $κ=0$ asymptotic normality still holds if $2k>d+1$, we prove for $κ=-1$ convergence to a non-Gaussian infinitely divisible limit distribution in the special case $m=1$. The proof of asymptotic normality is based on the analysis of variances and general bounds available from the Malliavin--Stein method. We also show for general $κ\in\{-1,0,1\}$ that, roughly speaking, the variances within a general observation window $W$ are maximal if and only if $W$ is a geodesic ball having the same volume as $W$. Along the way we derive a new integral-geometric formula of Blaschke--Petkantschin type in a standard space of constant curvature.

The case $λ=0$ corresponds to genuine geodesic hyperplanes, the case $λ=1$ to horospheres and $λ\in(0,1)$ to $λ$-equidistants. In the focus are the fluctuations of the centred and normalized total surface area of the union of all $λ$-geodesic hyperplanes in the Poisson process within a hyperbolic ball of radius $R$ centred at some fixed point, as $R\to\infty$. It is shown that for $λ<1$ these random variables satisfy a quantitative central limit theorem precisely for $d=2$ and $d=3$. The exact form of the non-Gaussian, infinitely divisible limiting distribution is determined for all higher space dimensions $d\geq 4$. The special case $λ=1$ is in sharp contrast to this behaviour. In fact, for the total surface area of Poisson processes of horospheres, a non-standard central limit theorem with limiting variance $1/2$ is established for all space dimensions $d\geq 2$. We discuss the analogy between the problem studied here and the Random Energy Model whose partition function exhibits a similar structure of possible limit laws.

Fix a container polygon $P$ in the plane and consider the convex hull $P_n$ of $n\geq 3$ independent and uniformly distributed in $P$ random points. In the focus of this paper is the vertex number of the random polygon $P_n$. The precise variance expansion for the vertex number is determined up to the constant-order term, a result which can be considered as a second-order analogue of the classical expansion for the expectation of Rényi and Sulanke (1963). Moreover, a sharp Berry-Esseen bound is derived for the vertex number of the random polygon $P_n$, which is of the same order as the square-root of the variance. The main idea behind the proof of both results is a decomposition of the boundary of the random polygon $P_n$ into random convex chains and a careful merging of the variance expansions and Berry-Esseen bounds for the vertex numbers of the individual chains.

The focus lies on the fluctuations, as $n\to\infty$, of the number $Z_{n,s}(k_n)$ of coupons that have not been drawn in the first $k_n$ drawings. Using a size-biased coupling construction together with Stein's method for normal approximation, a quantitative central limit theorem for $Z_{n,s}(k_n)$ is shown for the case that $k_n={n\over s}(α\log(n)+x)$, where $0<α<1$ and $x\in\mathbb{R}$. The concept simultaneously generalises those of a Boolean model and a Poisson hyperplane or $m$-flat process. Under very general conditions on the typical cylinder base a Berry-Esseen bound for the volume of the union set within a sequence of growing test sets is derived. Assuming convexity of the cylinder bases and of the window a similar result is shown for a broad class of geometric functionals, including the intrinsic volumes. In this context the asymptotic variance constant is analysed in detail, which in contrast to the Boolean model leads to a new degeneracy phenomenon. A quantitative central limit theory is developed in a multivariate set-up as well.

A probabilistic representation for a class of weighted $p$-radial distributions, based on mixtures of a weighted cone probability measure and a weighted uniform distribution on the Euclidean $\ell_p^n$-ball, is derived. Large deviation principles for the empirical measure of the coordinates of random vectors on the $\ell_p^n$-ball with distribution from this weighted measure class are discussed. The class of $p$-radial distributions is extended to $p$-balls in classical matrix spaces, both for self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint matrices. The eigenvalue distribution of a self-adjoint random matrix, chosen in the matrix $p$-ball according to such a distribution, is determined. Similarly, the singular value distribution is identified in the non-self-adjoint case. Again, large deviation principles for the empirical spectral measures for the eigenvalues and the singular values are presented as an application.

Explicit formulas for various geometric and combinatorial functionals associated with beta-star polytopes are provided, including the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces, the expected external angle sums and the expected intrinsic volumes. Beta-star polytopes are relevant in the context of hyperbolic stochastic geometry, since they are tightly connected to the typical cell of a Poisson-Voronoi tessellation as well as the zero cell of a Poisson hyperplane tessellation in hyperbolic space. The general results for beta-star polytopes are used to provide explicit formulas for the expected $f$- vector of the typical hyperbolic Poisson-Voronoi cell and the hyperbolic Poisson zero cell. Their asymptotics for large intensities and their monotonicity behaviour is discussed as well. Finally, stochastic geometry in the de Sitter half-space is studied as the hyperbolic analogue to recent investigations about random cones generated by random points on half-spheres in spherical or conical stochastic geometry.

As an application, the number of vertices with prescribed degree and the subgraph counting statistic in the Erdös-Rényi random graph are discussed. The number of vertices of fixed degree is also studied for percolation on the Hamming hypercube. For a generic random element $F=I_2(f)$ in the second Wiener chaos with $\E[F^2]= \E[Y^2]$ we establish a non-asymptotic optimal bound on the distance between $F$ and $Y$ in terms of the maximum of difference of the first six cumulants. This six moment theorem extends the celebrated optimal fourth moment theorem of I.\ Nourdin \& G.\ Peccati for normal approximation. The main body of our analysis constitutes a splitting technique for test functions in the Banach space of Lipschitz functions relying on the compactness of the Stein operator. The recent developments around Stein method for Variance--Gamma approximation by R.\ Gaunt play a significant role in our study. As an application we consider the generalized Rosenblatt process at the extreme critical exponent, first studied by S.\ Bai \& M.\ Taqqu.

The limiting stationary simplicial random tessellation, which is called the Gaussian-Delaunay tessellation, is characterized in terms of a space-time paraboloid hull process in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times\mathbb{R}$. The latter object has previously appeared in the analysis of the number of shocks in the solution of the inviscid Burgers' equation and the description of the local asymptotic geometry of Gaussian random polytopes. In this paper it is used to define a new stationary random simplicial tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$. As for the $β$- and $β'$-Delaunay tessellation, the distribution of volume-power weighted typical cells in the Gaussian-Delaunay tessellation is explicitly identified, establishing thereby a new bridge to Gaussian random simplices. Also major geometric characteristics of these cells such as volume moments, expected angle sums and also the cell intensities of the Gaussian-Delaunay tessellation are investigated.

Two models of random cones in high dimensions are considered, together with their duals. The Cover-Efron random cone $C_{n,d}$ is essentially defined as the same positive hull, conditioned on the event that it is not the whole space. We consider expectations of various combinatorial and geometric functionals of these random cones and prove that they satisfy limit theorems, as $d$ and $n$ tend to infinity in a suitably coordinated way. This includes, for example, large deviation principles and central as well as non-central limit theorems for the expected number of $k$-faces and the $k$-th conic intrinsic volumes, as $n$, $d$ and possibly also $k$ tend to infinity simultaneously. Furthermore, we determine the precise high-dimensional asymptotic behaviour of the expected statistical dimension for both models of random cones, uncovering thereby another high-dimensional phase transition. Taking $R=t^{-\frac{d}{d+1}}$ it is shown that this point process converges in distribution, as $t\to\infty$, to a Poisson point process on $\mathbb{R}^d\setminus\{0\}$ whose intensity measure has power-law density proportional to $\|x\|^{-(d+1)}$ with respect to the Lebesgue measure. A bound on the speed of convergence in terms of the Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance is provided as well. In the background is a general functional Poisson approximation theorem on abstract Poisson spaces. Implications on the weak convergence of the convex hull of the intersection point process and the convergence of its $f$-vector are also discussed, disproving and correcting thereby a conjecture of Devroye and Toussaint [J.\ Algorithms 14.3 (1993), 381--394] in computational geometry.

Having its origin in theoretical computer science, the Kannan-Lovász-Simonovits (KLS) conjecture is one of the major open problems in asymptotic convex geometry and high-dimensional probability theory today. In this work, we establish a new connection between this conjecture and the study of large and moderate deviations for isotropic log-concave random vectors, thereby providing a novel possibility to tackle the conjecture. We then study the moderate deviations for the Euclidean norm of random orthogonally projected random vectors in an $\ell_p^n$-ball. This leads to a number of interesting observations: (A) the $\ell_1^n$-ball is critical for the new approach; (B) for $p\geq 2$ the rate function in the moderate deviations principle undergoes a phase transition, depending on whether the scaling is below the square-root of the subspace dimensions or comparable; (C) for $1\leq p<2$ and comparable subspace dimensions, the rate function again displays a phase transition depending on its growth relative to $n^{p/2}$.

Its proof is based on a multivariate version of the Malliavin-Stein method for normal approximation on Poisson spaces. We also present an application to partial sums of vector-valued functionals of heavy-tailed moving averages. The extension allows a functional with multivariate arguments, i.e. multiple moving averages and also multivariate values of the functional. Such a set-up has previously not been explored in the framework of stable moving average processes. It can potentially capture probabilistic properties which cannot be described solely by the one-dimensional marginals, but instead require the joint distribution.

A strong law of large numbers for $d$-dimensional random projections of the $n$-dimensional cube is derived. It shows that with respect to the Hausdorff distance a properly normalized random projection of $[-1,1]^n$ onto $\mathbb{R}^d$ almost surely converges to a centered $d$-dimensional Euclidean ball of radius $\sqrt{2/π}$, as $n\to\infty$. For every point inside this ball we determine the asymptotic number of vertices and the volume of the part of the cube projected `close' to this point. Moreover, large deviations for random projections of general product measures are studied. Let $ν^{\otimes n}$ be the $n$-fold product measure of a Borel probability measure $ν$ on $\mathbb{R}$, and let $I$ be uniformly distributed on the Stiefel manifold of orthogonal $d$-frames in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It is shown that the sequence of random measures $ν^{\otimes n}\circ(n^{-1/2}I^*)^{-1}$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, satisfies a large deviations principle with probability $1$. The rate function is explicitly identified in terms of the moment generating function of $ν$. At the heart of the proofs lies a transition trick which allows to replace the uniform projection by the Gaussian one. A number of concrete examples are discussed as well, including the uniform distributions on the cube $[-1,1]^n$ and the discrete cube $\{-1,1\}^n$ as a special cases.

Typical weighted random simplices $Z_μ$, $μ\in(-2,\infty)$, in a Poisson-Delaunay tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are considered, where the weight is given by the $(μ+1)$st power of the volume. As special cases this includes the typical ($μ=-1$) and the usual volume-weighted ($μ=0$) Poisson-Delaunay simplex. By proving sharp bounds on cumulants it is shown that the logarithmic volume of $Z_μ$ satisfies a central limit theorem in high dimensions, that is, as $n\to\infty$. In addition, rates of convergence are provided. In parallel, concentration inequalities as well as moderate deviations are studied. The set-up allows the weight $μ=μ(n)$ to depend on the dimension $n$ as well. A number of special cases are discussed separately. For fixed $μ$ also mod-$φ$ convergence and the large deviations behaviour of the logarithmic volume of $Z_μ$ are investigated.

Abstract:
Random union sets $Z$ associated with stationary Poisson processes of $k$-cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are considered. Under general conditions on the typical cylinder base a concentration inequality for the volume of $Z$ restricted to a compact window is derived. Assuming convexity of the typical cylinder base and isotropy of $Z$ a concentration inequality for intrinsic volumes of arbitrary order…

Random union sets $Z$ associated with stationary Poisson processes of $k$-cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are considered. Under general conditions on the typical cylinder base a concentration inequality for the volume of $Z$ restricted to a compact window is derived. Assuming convexity of the typical cylinder base and isotropy of $Z$ a concentration inequality for intrinsic volumes of arbitrary order is established. A number of special cases are discussed, for example the case when the cylinder bases arise from a random rotation of a fixed convex body. Also the situation of expanding windows is studied. Special attention is payed to the case $k=0$, which corresponds to the classical Boolean model.

In this article we prove three fundamental types of limit theorems for the $q$-norm of random vectors chosen at random in an $\ell_p^n$-ball in high dimensions. We obtain a central limit theorem, a moderate deviations as well as a large deviations principle when the underlying distribution of the random vectors belongs to a general class introduced by Barthe, Guédon, Mendelson, and Naor. It includes the normalized volume and the cone probability measure as well as projections of these measures as special cases. Two new applications to random and non-random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls to lower-dimensional subspaces are discussed as well. The text is a continuation of [Kabluchko, Prochno, Thäle: High-dimensional limit theorems for random vectors in $\ell_p^n$-balls, Commun. Contemp. Math. (2019)].

Central limit theorems for the log-volume of a class of random convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are obtained in the high-dimensional regime, that is, as $n\to\infty$. In particular, the case of random simplices pinned at the origin and simplices where all vertices are generated at random is investigated. The coordinates of the generating vectors are assumed to be independent and identically distributed with subexponential tails. In addition, asymptotic normality is established also for random convex bodies (including random simplices pinned at the origin) when the spanning vectors are distributed according to a radially symmetric probability measure on the $n$-dimensional $\ell_p$-ball. In particular, this includes the cone and the uniform probability measure.
