Topological degeneracy of non-Abelian states for dummies
Abstract: We present a physical construction of degenerate groundstates of the Moore-Read Pfaffian states, which exhibits non-Abelian statistics, on general Riemann surface with genus g. The construction is given by a generalization of the recent argument [M.O. and T. Senthil, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 060601 (2006)] which relates fraction- alization and topological order. The nontrivial groundstate degeneracy… ▽ More

Quantum Computation Using Vortices and Majorana Zero Modes of a $p_x$ + $ip_y$ Superfluid of Fermionic Cold Atoms
Abstract: We propose to use the recently predicted two-dimensional `weak-pairing' $p_x + ip_y$ superfluid state of fermionic cold atoms as a platform for topological quantum computation. In the core of a vortex, this state supports a zero-energy Majorana mode, which moves to finite energy in the corresponding topologically trivial `strong-pairing' state. By braiding vortices in the `weak-pairing' state, u… ▽ More

Emergence of Artificial Photons in an Optical Lattice
Abstract: We establish the theoretical feasibility of direct analog simulation of the compact U(1) lattice gauge theories in optical lattices with dipolar bosons. We discuss the realizability of the topological Coulomb phase in extended Bose-Hubbard models in several optical lattice geometries. We predict the testable signatures of this emergent phase in noise correlation measurements, thus suggesting the… ▽ More

Tunable nonlinearity in atomic response to a bichromatic field
Abstract: Atomic response to a probe beam can be tailored, by creating coherences between atomic levels with help of another beam. Changing parameters of the control beam will change the nature of coherences and hence the nature of atomic response as well. Such change can depend upon intensity of both probe and control beams, in a nonlinear fashion. We present a situation where this nonlinearity in depend… ▽ More

Proposal to stabilize and detect half-quantum vortices in strontium ruthenate thin films: Non-Abelian braiding statistics of vortex matter in a ${p_x}+i{p_y}$ superconductor
Abstract: We propose a simple way to stabilize half-quantum vortices in superconducting strontium ruthenate, assuming the order parameter is of chiral $p_x + ip_y$ symmetry, as is suggested by recent experiments. The method, first given by Salomaa and Volovik in the context of Helium-3, is very naturally suited for strontium ruthenate, which has a layered, quasi-two-dimensional, perovskite crystal structu… ▽ More

Dissipate locally, couple globally: a sharp transition from decoupling to infinite range coupling in Josephson arrays with on-site dissipation
Abstract: We study the T=0 normal to superconducting transition of Josephson arrays with {\it on-site} dissipation. A perturbative renormalization group solution is given. Like the previously studied case of {\it bond} dissipation (BD), this is a "floating" to coupled (FC) phase transition. {\it Unlike} the BD transition, at which {\it only} nearest-neighbor couplings become relevant, here {\it all} inter… ▽ More

Blue Quantum Fog: Chiral Condensation in Quantum Helimagnets
Abstract: It is shown that a condensation transition involving a chiral order parameter can occur in itinerant helimagnets, in analogy to the transition between the isotropic phase and the phase known as blue fog or blue phase III in cholesteric liquid crystals. It is proposed that such a transition is the explanation for recent neutron scattering results in MnSi. Predictions are made that will allow to e… ▽ More

The nature and boundary of the floating phase in a dissipative Josephson junction array
Abstract: We study the nature of correlations within, and the transition into, the floating phase of dissipative Josephson junction arrays. Order parameter correlations in this phase are long-ranged in time, but only short-ranged in space. A perturbative RG analysis shows that, in {\it arbitrary} spatial dimension, the transition is controlled by a continuous locus of critical fixed points determined enti… ▽ More

Floating phase in a dissipative Josephson junction array
Abstract: We consider dissipative quantum phase transitions in Josephson junction arrays and show that the disordered phase in this extended system can be viewed as an unusual floating phase in which the states of local $(0+1)$-dimensional elements (single Josephson junctions) can slide past each other despite arbitrary range spatial couplings among them. Softer than normal, but not as soft as one might think: Spontaneous flux lattices in ferromagnetic spin-triplet superconductors
Abstract: A theory is developed for the spontaneous vortex lattice that is expected to occur in the ferromagnetic superconductors ZrZn_2, UGe_2, and URhGe, where the superconductivity is likely of spin-triplet nature. The long-wavelength fluctuations of this spontaneous flux lattice are predicted to be huge compared to those of a conventional flux lattice, and to be the same as those for spin-singlet ferr… ▽ More

Plant defense multigene families: II Evolution of coding sequence and differential expression of PR10 genes in Pisum
Abstract: While it is not possible to directly the observe evolution of multigene families, the best alternative is to compare orthologous family members among several closely-related species with varying degrees of reproductive isolation. Using RT-PCR we show that in pea (Pisum sativum) each member of the pathogenesis-related PR10 family has a distinct pattern of expression in response to the fungus Fusa… ▽ More

Plant defense multigene families: I. Divergence of Fusarium solani-induced expression in Pisum and Lathyrus
Abstract: The defense response in plants challenged with pathogens is characterized by the activation of a diverse set of genes. Many of the same genes are induced in the defense responses of a wide range of plant species. How plant defense gene families evolve may therefore provide an important clue to our understanding of how disease resistance evolves. Because studies usually focus on a single host spe… ▽ More

Infrared Hall angle in the $d$-density wave state: a comparison of theory and experiment
Abstract: Infrared Hall measurements in the pseudogap phase of the high-$T_c$ cuprates are addressed within the framework of the ordered $d$-density wave state. The zero-temperature Hall frequency $ω_H$ is computed as a function of the hole-do** $x$. Our results are consistent with recent experiments in absolute units. We also discuss the signature of the quantum critical point in the Hall frequency at… ▽ More

Angle-resolved photoemission spectra in the cuprates from the d-density wave theory
Abstract: Angle-resolved photoemission spectra present two challenges for the d-density wave (DDW) theory of the pseudogap state of the cuprates: (1) hole pockets near $(π/2,π/2)$ are not observed, in apparent contradiction with the assumption of translational symmetry breaking, and (2) there are no well-defined quasiparticles at the {\it antinodal} points, in contradiction with the predictions of mean-fi… ▽ More

Collective modes in the d-density wave state of the cuprates
Abstract: Using a functional integral formulation, we analyze the collective modes in the $d$-density wave state. Since only discrete symmetries are broken, no massless phase mode is present. The only relevant fluctuation is the amplitude fluctuation of the order parameter, which is treated at the gaussian level above the long range order. These fluctuations give rise to a massive mode, the analog of the… ▽ More

Sharp signature of DDW quantum critical point in the Hall coefficient of the cuprates
Abstract: We study the behavior of the Hall coefficient, $R_H$, in a system exhibiting $d_{{x^2}-{y^2}}$ density-wave (DDW) order in a regime in which the carrier concentration, $x$, is tuned to approach a quantum critical point at which the order is destroyed. At the mean-field level, we find that $n_{\rm Hall}=1/R_H$ evinces a sharp signature of the transition. There is a kink in $n_{\rm Hall}$ at the c… ▽ More

Statistics of Shear-induced Rearrangements in a Model Foam

We use a simple model of foam that incorporates both elasticity and dissipation to study the statistics of bubble rearrangements in terms of energy drops, the number of nearest neighbor changes, and the rate of neighbor-switching (T1) events.
