Extensions of the Standard Model with masses at or below the GeV scale are motivated by searches for dark matter and precision measurements in the quark and lepton flavour sectors, including that of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. An excellent experimental environment to test such light new physics is given by the Belle II experiment, which foresees to take up to 50 ab$^{-1}$ of data. Here we consider a model with an additional gauged $U(1)_{L_μ- L_τ}$ symmetry that introduces a neutral gauge boson, a Dark Photon, with possibly large couplings to muon- and tau-flavored leptons, including neutrinos. Dark Photon mixing with the Standard Model photon is loop induced, allowing it to couple to electrically charged fermions other than muons and taus. We systematically investigate the possible search strategies for Dark Photons with four fermions final states. We identified search channels with muons as the most promising ones, and we analyse the kinematic distributions to obtain cuts that optimise the sensitivity of Belle II searches for the Dark Photon. Summarising the sensitivities from the most promising search channels we provide a comprehensive overview of future searches at Belle II.

We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_μ= (g_μ-2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_μ$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_μ= 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_μ(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). Combining this with the measurements from Brookhaven National Laboratory for both positive and negative muons, the new world average is $a_μ$(exp) $ = 116 592 059 (22) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm).

We propose an alternative method to extract the leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon g-2, $a_μ^\text{HLO}$, with the MUonE experiment. In contrast to the traditional method based on the integral of the hadronic contribution to the running of the effective fine-structure constant $Δα_{had}$ in the space-like region, our approach relies on the computation of the derivatives of $Δα_{had}(t)$ at zero squared momentum transfer $t$. We show that this approach allows to extract $\sim 99\%$ of the total value of $a_μ^\text{HLO}$ from the MUonE data, while the remaining $\sim 1\%$ can be computed combining perturbative QCD and data on $e^+e^-$ annihilation to hadrons. This leads to a competitive evaluation of $a_μ^\text{HLO}$ which is robust against the parameterization used to model $Δα_{had}(t)$ in the MUonE kinematic region, thanks to the analyticity properties of $Δα_{had}(t)$, which can be expanded as a polynomial at $t\sim 0$.

We present a new measurement of the positive muon magnetic anomaly, $a_μ\equiv (g_μ- 2)/2$, from the Fermilab Muon $g\!-\!2$ Experiment using data collected in 2019 and 2020. We have analyzed more than 4 times the number of positrons from muon decay than in our previous result from 2018 data. The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, $\tildeω'^{}_p$, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, $ω_a$. From the ratio $ω_a / \tildeω'^{}_p$, together with precisely determined external parameters, we determine $a_μ= 116\,592\,057(25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). Combining this result with our previous result from the 2018 data, we obtain $a_μ\text{(FNAL)} = 116\,592\,055(24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). The new experimental world average is $a_μ(\text{Exp}) = 116\,592\,059(22)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm), which represents a factor of 2 improvement in precision.

We discuss and evaluate modifications of window parameters that could be useful in dissecting the energy dependence of tensions in the HVP integral and emphasize that further optimizations require a precise knowledge of the full covariance matrix in lattice-QCD calculations as well.

An observation of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) would be unambiguous evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. The Mu2e and COMET experiments, under construction, are designed to push the sensitivity to CLFV in the mu to e conversion process to unprecedented levels. Whether conversion is observed or not, there is a strong case to be made for further improving sensitivity, or for examining the process on additional target materials. Mu2e-II is a proposed upgrade to Mu2e, with at least an additional order of magnitude in sensitivity to the conversion rate over Mu2e. The approach and challenges for this proposal are summarized. Mu2e-II may be regarded as the next logical step in a continued high-intensity muon program at FNAL.

This leaves a set of mixed leptonic and hadronic corrections in the form of double-bubble topologies as the only remaining hadronic effect at ${\mathcal O}(α^4)$. Here, we estimate these contributions by analyzing the respective cuts of the diagrams, suggesting that the impact is limited to $\lesssim 1\times 10^{-11}$ and thus negligible at the level of the final precision of the Fermilab $g-2$ experiment.

We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly $a_μ\equiv (g_μ-2)/2$. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $ω_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${\tildeω'^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{\circ}$C. The ratio $ω_a / {\tildeω'^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_μ({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.46\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both $μ^+$ and $μ^-$, the new experimental average of $a_μ({\rm Exp}) = 116\,592\,061(41)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.35\,ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $ω_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $ω_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. The sum of the corrections to $ω_a^m$ is 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm; the uncertainty is small compared to the 0.43 ppm statistical precision of $ω_a^m$.

The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tildeω'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $ω^{}_a$/$\tildeω'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_μ$. The reported uncertainty on $\tildeω'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, map**, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb.

Abstract:
The low $x$ behaviour of the gluon density $xg(x,μ^2)$ at scale $μ^2=2.4$ GeV$^2$ is determined using exclusive $J/ψ$ production data from HERA and LHCb within the framework of collinear factorisation at next-to-leading order (NLO). It is shown that in the interval $3\times 10^{-6} < x <10^{-3}$ the gluon distribution function grows as $xg(x,μ^2)\propto x^{-λ}$ with $λ=0.135\pm 0.006 $. The impact…

We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_μ/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_μ^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$σ$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

The cross section level predictions allow the behaviour of the gluon PDF in the low $(x, Q)$ domain to be determined.

Using the optimum scale formalism together with the subtraction of the low $k_t<Q_0$ contribution from the NLO coefficient function to avoid double counting we show that the existing global parton distribution functions (PDFs) are consistent with the data within their uncertainties. However, at low $x$ the uncertainties of the present global PDFs are large. On the other hand, the accuracy of the LHCb data are rather good. Therefore, these data provide the possibility to directly measure the gluon PDF over the very large interval of $x$, $10^{-6}<x<10^{-2}$, at a fixed low scale.

The threshold scan at future lepton colliders is the most precise known method to determine the top quark mass (well below 100 MeV), a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model that co-determines the stability properties of the electroweak vacuum. We present a new method to match the continuum next-to-leading order QCD corrections with the next-to-leading logarithmic resummation of the Coulomb singularities of the quasi-toponium bound state at threshold where fixed-order perturbation theory is invalid. This matching is performed at the level of the fully exclusive $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ final state. It allows to study all kinds of differential distributions at or close to threshold. The top mass dependence of these distributions opens up new possibilities for the top mass determination that might be competitive with the inclusive threshold scan.

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

We present an approach to predict exclusive $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ production at lepton colliders that correctly describes the top-anti-top threshold as well as the continuum region. We incorporate $t\bar{t}$ form factors for the NLL threshold resummation derived in NRQCD into a factorized relativistic cross section using an extended double-pole approximation, which accounts for fixed-order QCD corrections to the top decays at NLO. This is combined with the full fixed-order QCD result at NLO for $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ production to obtain predictions that are not only valid at threshold but smoothly transition to the continuum region. Our implementation is based on the Monte Carlo event generator WHIZARD and the code TOPPIK and allows to compute fully-differential threshold-resummed cross sections including the interference with non-resonant background processes. For the first time it is now possible to systematically study general differential observables at future lepton colliders involving the decay products of the top quarks at energies close to the pair production threshold and beyond.

The three precision measurements of the cross section $σ\big(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-γ(γ)\big)$ using initial state radiation by the KLOE collaboration provide an important input for the prediction of the hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for $σ\big(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-γ(γ)\big)$. We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range $0.10 < s < 0.95$ GeV$^2$ of $a_μ^{π^+π^-} = (489.8 \pm 1.7_{\rm stat} \pm 4.8_{\rm sys} ) \times 10^{-10}$.

Abstract:
The recent LHCb data for exclusive $J/ψ$ peripheral production at 13 TeV motivate an improved `NLO' analysis to estimate the gluon distribution at low $x$ in which we re-calculate the rapidity gap survival factors and use a more precise expression for the photon flux. We comment on the difference between the $k_T$ and collinear factorization approaches.

The perturbative QCD expansion for $J/ψ$ photoproduction appears to be unstable: the NLO correction is large (and of opposite sign) to the LO contribution. Moreover, the predictions are very sensitive to the choice of factorization and renormalization scales. Here we show that perturbative stability is greatly improved by imposing a $`Q_0$ cut' on the NLO coefficient functions; a cut which is required to avoid double counting. $Q_0$ is the input scale used in the parton DGLAP evolution. This result opens the possibility of high precision exclusive $J/ψ$ data in the forward direction at the LHC being able to determine the low $x$ gluon distribution at low scales.

We show that it may be possible to overcome the problems that (i) the process is described by a skewed or Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD), (ii) it is very sensitive to the choice of factorization scale and (iii) there is bad LO, NLO,... perturbative stability to the predictions. However, we start by briefly explaining how the alternative k_T factorization approach has been used to describe the process.

Abstract:
We discuss the potential to constrain the small-$x$ PDFs using the exclusive production of heavy vector mesons. The calculation of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ photoproduction at NLO in collinear factorisation is described. The different behaviour of the NLO corrections for $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ is highlighted and we outline what might be expected from the inclusion of these processes in a PDF fit.

This includes full six-, eight- and ten-fermion processes, factorized processes and spin correlations. For lepton colliders, QCD NLO processes for top quark physics are available and will be discussed. A special focus is on the top-quark pair threshold, where a special implementation combines a non-relativistic effective field theory calculation augmented by a next-to-leading threshold logarithm resummation with a continuum relativistic fixed-order QCD NLO simulation.

We give a status report on the automation of next-to-leading order processes within the Monte Carlo event generator WHIZARD, using GoSam and OpenLoops as provider for one-loop matrix elements. To deal with divergences, WHIZARD uses automated FKS subtraction, and the phase space for singular regions is generated automatically. NLO examples for both scattering and decay processes with a focus on e+e- processes are shown. Also, first NLO-studies of observables for collisions of polarized leptons beams, e.g. at the ILC, will be presented. Furthermore, the automatic matching of the fixed-order NLO amplitudes with emissions from the parton shower within the POWHEG formalism inside WHIZARD will be discussed. We also present results for top pairs at threshold in lepton collisions, including matching between a resummed threshold calculation and fixed-order NLO. This allows the investigation of more exclusive differential observables.

We study exclusive vector meson photoproduction, $γp \to V + p$ with $V=J/ψ$ or $Υ$, at NLO in collinear factorisation, in order to examine what may be learnt about the gluon distribution at very low $x$. We examine the factorisation scale dependence of the predictions. We argue that, using knowledge of the NLO corrections, terms enhanced by a large $\ln(1/ξ)$ can be reabsorbed in the LO part by a choice of the factorisation scale. (In these exclusive processes $ξ$ takes the role of Bjorken-$x$.) Then, the scale dependence coming from the remaining NLO contributions has no $\ln(1/ξ)$ enhancements. As a result, we find that predictions for the amplitude of $Υ$ production are stable to within about $\pm 15\%$. This will allow data for the exclusive process $p p \to pΥp$ at the LHC, particularly from LHCb, to be included in global parton analyses to constrain the gluon PDF down to $x\sim 10^{-5}$. Moreover, the study of exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction indicates that the gluon density found in the recent global PDF analyses is too small at low $x$ and low scales.

The Muon (g-2) Experiment, E989 at Fermilab, will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment a factor-of-four more precisely than was done in E821 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. The E821 result appears to be greater than the Standard-Model prediction by more than three standard deviations. When combined with expected improvement in the Standard-Model hadronic contributions, E989 should be able to determine definitively whether or not the E821 result is evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. After a review of the physics motivation and the basic technique, which will use the muon storage ring built at BNL and now relocated to Fermilab, the design of the new experiment is presented. This document was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-2/3 approval.

Our method uses Padé approximants to reconstruct the Adler function from its derivatives at $q^2=0$. These are obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators calculated on MILC Collaboration's $n_f = 2+1+1$ HISQ ensembles at multiple values of the lattice spacing, multiple volumes and multiple light sea quark masses (including physical pion mass configurations). We find the (connected) contribution to the anomalous moment from the strange quark vacuum polarisation to be $a^s_μ=53.41(59)\times 10^{-10}$, and the contribution from charm quarks to be $a^c_μ=14.42(39)\times 10^{-10}$ - 1% accuracy is achieved for the strange quark contribution. The extension of our method to the light quark contribution and to that from the quark-line disconnected diagram is straightforward.

We describe a new technique to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarization using lattice QCD. Our method reconstructs the Adler function, using Padé approximants, from its derivatives at $q^2=0$ obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators on large-volume gluon field configurations that include the effect of up and down (at physical masses), strange and charm quarks in the sea at multiple values of the lattice spacing and multiple volumes and show that 1% accuracy is achievable. For the charm quark contributions we use our previously determined moments with up, down and strange quarks in the sea on very fine lattices. We find the (connected) contribution to the anomalous moment from the strange quark vacuum polarization to be $a_μ^s = 53.41(59) \times 10^{-10}$, and from charm to be $a_μ^c = 14.42(39)\times 10^{-10}$. These are in good agreement with flavour-separated results from non-lattice methods, given caveats about the comparison. The extension of our method to the light quark contribution and to that from the quark-line disconnected diagram is straightforward.

This White Paper briefly reviews the present status of the muon (g-2) Standard-Model prediction. This value results in a 3 - 4 standard-deviation difference with the experimental result from Brookhaven E821. The present experimental uncertainty is $\pm 63 \times 10^{-11}$ (0.54~ppm), and the Standard-Model uncertainty is $\simeq \pm 49 \times 10^{-11}$. Fermilab experiment E989 has the goal to reduce the experimental error to $\pm 16 \times 10^{-11}$. Improvements in the Standard-Model value, which should be achieved between now and when the first results from Fermilab E989 could be available, should lead to a Standard-Model uncertainty of $\sim \,\pm 35 \times 10^{-11}$. These improvements would halve the uncertainty on the difference between experiment and theory, and should clarify whether the current difference points toward New Physics, or to a statistical fluctuation. At present, the (g-2) result is arguably the most compelling indicator of physics beyond the Standard Model and, at the very least, it represents a major constraint for speculative new theories such as supersymmetry, dark gauge bosons or extra dimensions.
