Studies of nanoscale biological transport often use a mean-field approximation that is exact only when the system is at equilibrium and there are no interactions between particles on different sites in the network. We explore the limitations of this approximation to describe many-particle transport in the context of enzyme function and biological transport networks. Our focus is on three bioenergetic networks: a linear electron transfer chain (as found in bacterial nanowires), a redox-coupled proton pump (as in complex IV of respiration), and a near reversible electron bifurcation network (as in complex III of respiration and other recently discovered structures). Away from equilibrium and with typical site-site interactions, we find that the mean-field approximation adequately describes linear transport chains. However, the mean-field approximation fails catastrophically to describe energy-transducing systems, as in the redox coupled proton pump and reversible electron bifurcation reactions. The mean-field approximation fails to capture the essential correlations that are needed to prevent slippage events and to produce efficient energy transduction.

In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to first-order discount mean field games and a stability result to give the existence for the ergodic problem. We show an example to illustrate the multiplicity of weak solutions to the ergodic problem. With this motivation, we address a selection condition, which is a necessary condition that any limit of solutions under subsequence satisfies. As an application, we show a nontrivial example to get the convergence of weak solutions.

Remarks on the vanishing discount problem for infinite systems of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations
Authors:

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic analysis of infinite systems of weakly coupled stationary Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations as the discount factor tends to zero. With a specific Hamiltonian, we show the convergence of the solution and prove the solvability of the corresponding ergodic problem.

Here, we study the existence and the convergence of solutions for the vanishing discount MFG problem with a quadratic Hamiltonian. We give conditions under which the discounted problem has a unique classical solution and prove convergence of the vanishing-discount limit to a unique solution up to constants. Then, we establish refined asymptotics for the limit. When those conditions do not hold, the limit problem may not have a unique solution and its solutions may not be smooth, as we illustrate in an elementary example. Finally, we investigate the stability of regular weak solutions and address the selection problem. Using ideas from Aubry-Mather theory, we establish a selection criterion for the limit.

Here, we address a uniqueness structure of viscosity solutions for ergodic problems of weakly coupled Hamilton-Jacobi systems. In particular, we study comparison principle with respect to generalized Mather measures as a generalization of the result proved by Mitake and Tran, which addressed the case of a single equation. To get the main result, it is important to construct Mather measures effectively. We overcome this difficulty by nonlinear adjoint methods.

We have searched for a bound state of kaon and pion denoted by $X$. The $X$ was conjectured to explain the so-called $Θ^+$ resonance as a bound state of kaon, pion and nucleon. This model explains almost all properties of the $Θ^+$, however, the model works only if the $K π$ interaction is strongly attractive. It is so strong that it could make a bound state $X$. Here we report a result of the search for the $X$ by using the $K^+ + N \rightarrow X^+ + N$ reaction at P$_K\sim$ 1.2 GeV/c. The $X^+ \rightarrow K^+ γγ$ decay produces $K^+$ in momentum region where other processes cannot fill. We observed signature of the $X^+$ with statistical significance of 2 $σ$. Production cross section of $X$ with respect to that of $π^0$ is 1$\pm$0.5% if we take it as an evidence and 1.5% if we set an upper limit.

The Ni $2p$ core-level PES and XAS spectra were not changed by Li do**. In contrast, the Fe$^{3+}$ intensity increased with Li do** relative to the Fe$^{2+}$ intensity. However, the increase of Fe$^{3+}$ is only $\sim 5%$ of the doped Li content, suggesting that most of the doped holes enter the O $2p$ and/or the charge-transferred configuration Ni $3d^8\underline{L}$. The Fe 3d partial density of states and the host valence-band emission near valence-band maximum increased with Li content, consistent with the increase of electrical conductivity. Based on these findings, percolation of bound magnetic polarons is proposed as an origin of the ferromagnetic behavior.

While Ti do** did not affect the valence states of the Ni and Zn ions, a small amount of Fe$^{2+}$ ions increased with Ti concentration, consistent with the proposed charge-transfer mechanism of PIM.

XMCD signals due to ferromagnetism were observed at the Cr 2p absorption edge. Comparison with atomic multiplet calculations suggests that the magnetically active component of the Cr ion was divalent under the tetrahedral crystal field with tetragonal distortion along the crystalline a-, b-, and c-axes. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was strongly suppressed, suggesting the importance of Jahn-Teller effect and the strong Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons.
