The aim of this work is to create a new catalog of reliable AGN candidates selected from the AKARI NEP-Deep field. Selection of the AGN candidates was done by applying a fuzzy SVM algorithm, which allows to incorporate measurement uncertainties into the classification process. The training dataset was based on the spectroscopic data available for selected objects in the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide fields. The generalization sample was based on the AKARI NEP-Deep field data including objects without optical counterparts and making use of the infrared information only. A high quality catalog of previously unclassified 275 AGN candidates was prepared.

We report the first confirmed detection of the galaxy cluster VVV-J144321-611754 at very low latitudes (l = 315.836$^{\circ}$, b = -1.650$^{\circ}$) located in the tile d015 of the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey. We defined the region of 30$\times$ 30 $arcmin^2$ centered in the brightest galaxy finding 25 galaxies. For these objects, extinction-corrected median colors of (H - K$_{s}$) = 0.34 $\pm$ 0.05 mag, (J - H) = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.08 mag and (J - K$_{s}$) = 0.87 $\pm$ 0.06 mag, and R$_{1/2}$ = 1.59 $\pm$ 0.16 $arcsec$; C = 3.01 $\pm$ 0.08; and Sersic index, n = 4.63 $\pm$ 0.39 were estimated. They were visually confirmed showing characteristics of early-type galaxies in the near-IR images. An automatic clustering analysis performed in the whole tile found that the concentration of galaxies VVV-J144321-611754 is a real, compact concentration of early-type galaxies. Assuming a typical galaxy cluster with low X-ray luminosity, the photometric redshift of the brightest galaxy is $z = $ 0.196 $\pm$ 0.025. Follow-up near-IR spectroscopy with FLAMINGOS-2 at the Gemini-South telescope revealed that the two brighter cluster galaxies have typical spectra of early-type galaxies and the estimated redshift for the brightest galaxy VVV-J144321.06-611753.9 is $z =$ 0.234$\pm$0.022 and for VVV-J144319.02-611746.1 is $z =$ 0.232$\pm$0.019. Finally, these galaxies clearly follow the cluster Red Sequence in the rest-frame near-IR color--magnitude diagram with the slope similar to galaxy cluster at redshift of 0.2. These results are consistent with the presence of a bona fide galaxy cluster beyond the Milky Way disk.

Deep MIR surveys have revealed numerous strongly star-forming galaxies at redshift z~<2. Their MIR fluxes are produced by a combination of continuum and PAH emission features. The PAH features can dominate the total MIR flux, but are difficult to measure without spectroscopy. We aim to study star-forming galaxies by using a blind spectroscopic survey at MIR wavelengths to understand evolution of their star formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR up to z~=0.5, by paying particular attention to their PAH properties. We conducted a low-resolution (R~=50) slitless spectroscopic survey at 5-13um of 9um flux-selected sources (>0.3 mJy) around the North Ecliptic Pole with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. After removing 11 AGN candidates by using the IRC photometry, we identified 48 PAH galaxies with PAH 6.2, 7.7, and 8.6um features at z<0.5. The rest-frame optical-MIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) based on CFHT and AKARI/IRC imaging covering 0.37-18um were produced, and analysed in conjunction with the PAH spectroscopy. We defined the PAH enhancement by using the luminosity ratio of the 7.7um PAH feature over the 3.5um stellar component of the SEDs. The rest-frame SEDs of all PAH galaxies have a universal shape with stellar and 7.7um bumps, except that the PAH enhancement significantly varies as a function of the PAH luminosities. We identified a PAH-enhanced population at z~>0.35, whose SEDs and luminosities are typical of luminous infrared galaxies. They show particularly larger PAH enhancement at high luminosity, implying that they are vigorous star-forming galaxies with elevated specific SFR. Our composite starburst model that combines a very young and optically very thick starburst with a very old population can successfully reproduce most of their SED characteristics, although we could not confirm this optically thick component from our spectral analysis.

Aims. We report our finding of a high excitation emission line nebula associated with an Ultra Luminous X-ray source (ULX) at $z=$ 0.027, which we found in our Chandra observation of the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep Field. Methods. We present a Chandra X-ray and Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) optical spectral analysis of the ULX blob. We investigate the nature of the emission line nebula by using line ratio diagnostic diagrams, and its physical properties estimated from Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting. Results. The optical spectrum of this ULX blob shows emission line ratios that are located on the borderlines between star-formation and Seyfert regimes in [OIII]/H$β$-[OI]/H$α$, [OIII]/H$β$-[SII]/H$α$ and [OIII]/H$β$-[OIII]/[OII] diagnostic diagrams. These are in contrast with those of a nearby blob observed with the same slit, which occupy the HII regimes. This result suggests that the ionization of the emission line nebula associated with the ULX is significantly contributed by energy input from the accretion power of the ULX, in addition to the star formation activity in the blob, suggesting the existence of an accretion disk in the ULX emitting UV radiation, or exerting shock waves.

Aims. We present a spectroscopic study of the properties of 64 Balmer break galaxies that show signs of star formation. The studied sample of star-forming galaxies spans a redshift range from 0.094 to 1.475 with stellar masses in the range 10$^{8}-$10$^{12}$ $M_{\odot}$. The sample also includes eight broad emission line galaxies with redshifts between 1.5 $<z<$ 3.0.
Methods. We derived star formation rates (SFRs) from emission line luminosities and investigated the dependence of the SFR and specific SFR (SSFR) on the stellar mass and color. Furthermore, we investigated the evolution of these relations with the redshift.
Results. We found that the SFR correlates with the stellar mass, our data is consistent with previous results from other authors in that there is a break in the correlation, which reveals the presence of massive galaxies with lower SFR values (i.e., decreasing star formation). We also note an anticorrelation for the SSFR with the stellar mass. Again in this case, our data is also consistent with a break in the correlation, revealing the presence of massive star-forming galaxies with lower SSFR values, thereby increasing the anticorrelation. These results might suggest a characteristic mass ($M_{0}$) at which the red sequence could mostly be assembled. In addition, at a given stellar mass, high-redshift galaxies have on average higher SFR and SSFR values than local galaxies. Finally, we explored whether a similar trend could be observed with redshift in the SSFR$-(u-B)$ color diagram, and we hypothesize that a possible $(u-B)_{0}$ break color may define a characteristic color for the formation of the red sequence.

We report the multi-wavelength identification of the X-ray sources found in the Subaru-XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) using deep imaging data covering the wavelength range between the far-UV to the mid-IR. We select a primary counterpart of each X-ray source by applying the likelihood ratio method to R-band, 3.6micron, near-UV, and 24micron source catalogs as well as matching catalogs of AGN candidates selected in 1.4GHz radio and i'-band variability surveys. Once candidates of Galactic stars, ultra-luminous X-ray sources in a nearby galaxy, and clusters of galaxies are removed there are 896 AGN candidates in the sample. We conduct spectroscopic observations of the primary counterparts with multi-object spectrographs in the optical and NIR; 65\% of the X-ray AGN candidates are spectroscopically-identified. For the remaining X-ray AGN candidates, we evaluate their photometric redshift with photometric data in 15 bands. Utilising the multi-wavelength photometric data of the large sample of X-ray selected AGNs, we evaluate the stellar masses, M*, of the host galaxies of the narrow-line AGNs. The distribution of the stellar mass is remarkably constant from z=0.1 to 4.0. The relation between M* and 2--10 keV luminosity can be explained with strong cosmological evolution of the relationship between the black hole mass and M*. We also evaluate the scatter of the UV-MIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of the X-ray AGNs as a function of X-ray luminosity and absorption to the nucleus. The scatter is compared with galaxies which have redshift and stellar mass distribution matched with the X-ray AGN. The UV-NIR SEDs of obscured X-ray AGNs are similar to those of the galaxies in the matched sample. In the NIR-MIR range, the median SEDs of X-ray AGNs are redder, but the scatter of the SEDs of the X-ray AGN broadly overlaps that of the galaxies in the matched sample.

We analyse different properties of the small scale environment of Seyfert 2 for two samples selected according to the accretion rate parameter, R, from the DR7-SDSS survey. We compare the results with two control samples of non-active galaxies that cover the same redshift range, luminosity, colours, morphology, age and stellar mass content. Our study shows that both high and low accretion rate subsamples reside in bluer and lower density environments than the control samples. However, we find that this difference is at least two times stronger for the low accretion rate Seyferts.
In the vicinity of Seyfert 2, red galaxies have systematically lower values of stellar-mass as compared with corresponding control samples. The lower values of stellar mass for red neighbours is more significant at higher density environments and it is more evident for low accretion rate Seyfert. We also find that this effect is independent of the host's stellar mass.
Our results are consistent with a scenario where AGN occurrence is higher in lower/medium density environments with a higher merger rate and a lack of a dense intergalactic medium (that can strip gas from these systems) that provide suitable conditions for the central black hole feeding. We find this particularly evident for the low accretion rate Seyferts that could compensate through the intergalactic medium the lack of gas of their hosts.

We present a spectroscopic study with the derivation of the physical properties of 37 Balmer break galaxies, which have the necessary lines to locate them in star-forming-AGN diagnostic diagrams. These galaxies span a redshift range from 0.045 to 0.93 and are somewhat less massive than similar samples of previous works. The studied sample has multiwavelength photometric data coverage from the ultraviolet to MIR Spitzer bands. We investigate the connection between star formation and AGN activity via optical, mass-excitation (MEx) and MIR diagnostic diagrams. Through optical diagrams, 31 (84%) star-forming galaxies, 2 (5%) composite galaxies and 3 (8%) AGNs were classified, whereas from the MEx diagram only one galaxy was classified as AGN. A total of 19 galaxies have photometry available in all the IRAC/Spitzer bands. Of these, 3 AGN candidates were not classified as AGN in the optical diagrams, suggesting they are dusty/obscured AGNs, or that nuclear star formation has diluted their contributions. Furthermore, the relationship between SFR surface density (Σ_{SFR}) and stellar mass surface density per time unit (Σ_{M_{\ast}/τ}) as a function of redshift was investigated using the [OII] \lambda3727, 3729, Hα\lambda6563 luminosities, which revealed that both quantities are larger for higher redshift galaxies. We also studied the SFR and SSFR versus stellar mass and color relations, with the more massive galaxies having higher SFR values but lower SSFR values than less massive galaxies. These results are consistent with previous ones showing that, at a given mass, high-redshift galaxies have on average larger SFR and SSFR values than low-redshift galaxies. Finally, bluer galaxies have larger SSFR values than redder galaxies and for a given color the SSFR is larger for higher redshift galaxies.

Vista Variables in The Via Lactea (VVV) is an ESO variability survey that is performing observations in near infrared bands (ZYJHKs) towards the Galactic bulge and part of the disk with the completeness limits at least 3 mag deeper than 2MASS. In the present work, we searched in the VVV survey data for background galaxies near the Galactic plane using ZYJHKs photometry that covers 1.636 square degrees. We identified 204 new galaxy candidates by analyzing colors, sizes, and visual inspection of multi-band (ZYJHKs) images. The galaxy candidates colors were also compared with the predicted ones by star counts models considering a more realistic extinction model at the same completeness limits observed by VVV. A comparison of the galaxy candidates with the expected one by Milennium simulations is also presented. Our results increase the number density of known galaxies behind the Milky Way by more than one order of magnitude. A catalog with galaxy properties including ellipticity, Petrosian radii and ZYJHKs magnitudes is provided, as well as comparisons of the results with other surveys of galaxies towards Galactic plane.
