Abstract:
In this paper we report near-infrared observations of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya with the SPIRou high-resolution spectropolarimeter and velocimeter at the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. In this paper we report near-infrared observations of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya with the SPIRou high-resolution spectropolarimeter and velocimeter at the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. By applying Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) to our circularly polarized spectra, we derived longitudinal fields that vary from year to year from -200 to +100 G, and exhibit low-level modulation on the 3.6 d rotation period of TW Hya, despite the star being viewed almost pole-on. We then used Zeeman-Doppler Imaging to invert our sets of unpolarized and circularly-polarized LSD profiles into brightness and magnetic maps of TW Hya in all 4 seasons, and obtain that the large-scale field of this T Tauri star mainly consists of a 1.0-1.2 kG dipole tilted at about 20° to the rotation axis, whereas the small-scale field reaches strengths of up to 3-4 kG. We find that the large-scale field is strong enough to allow TW Hya to accrete material from the disc on the polar regions at the stellar surface in a more or less geometrically stable accretion pattern, but not to succeed in spinning down the star. We also report the discovery of a radial velocity signal of semi-amplitude $11.1^{+3.3}_{-2.6}$ m/s (detected at 4.3$σ$ at a period of 8.3 d in the spectrum of TW Hya, whose origin may be attributed to either a non-axisymmetric density structure in the inner accretion disc, or to a $0.55^{+0.17}_{-0.13}$ Jupiter mass candidate close-in planet (if orbiting in the disc plane), at an orbital distance of $0.075\pm0.001$ au.

SPIRou aims in particular at becoming world-leader on two forefront science topics, (i) the quest for habitable Earth-like planets around very- low-mass stars, and (ii) the study of low-mass star and planet formation in the presence of magnetic fields. In addition to these two main goals, SPIRou will be able to tackle many key programs, from weather patterns on brown dwarf to solar-system planet atmospheres, to dynamo processes in fully-convective bodies and planet habitability. The science programs that SPIRou proposes to tackle are forefront (identified as first priorities by most research agencies worldwide), ambitious (competitive and complementary with science programs carried out on much larger facilities, such as ALMA and JWST) and timely (ideally phased with complementary space missions like TESS and CHEOPS).
SPIRou is designed to carry out its science mission with maximum efficiency and optimum precision. More specifically, SPIRou will be able to cover a very wide single-shot nIR spectral domain (0.98-2.35 μm) at a resolving power of 73.5K, providing unpolarized and polarized spectra of low-mass stars with a ~15% average throughput and a radial velocity (RV) precision of 1 m/s.

SPIRou, a near infrared spectropolarimeter, is a project of new instrument to be mounted at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope in 2017. One of the main objectives of SPIRou is to reach a radial velocity accuracy better than 1 m/s in the YJHK bands. SPIRou will make a cornerstone into the characterization of Earth-like planets, where the exoplanet statistics is very low. This is even more true for planets transiting M dwarfs, since only 3 low-mass planets have been secured so far to transit such stars. We present here all the synergies that SPIRou will provide to and benefit from photometric transit-search programs from the ground or from space (Kepler, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO 2.0). We also discuss the impact of SPIRou for the characterization of planets orbiting actives stars.

SPACE (SPectroscopic All-sky Cosmic Explorer) is a class-M mission proposed to ESA for the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 call and recently promoted to the next assessment study phase. SPACE will produce the first all-sky spectroscopic survey of the Universe, taking spectra of more than 500 million galaxies over a wide range of redshifts. SPACE will operate in slit mode (MEMS) at R~400 between 0.8 and 1.8micron down to AB~23, providing redshifts to an accuracy of Delta z~0.001, regardless on the presence of bright emission lines, together with the most relevant physical and evolutionary properties. The catalog of spectroscopic redshift will allow to place the ultimate constraints on the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and the nature of Dark Energy. By obtaining the first 3-D all-sky map of the Universe at z~2 and beyond, SPACE will trace the growth rate of cosmic structures, the large scale structure of luminous baryons and its cosmic evolution. Besides the all-sky survey, SPACE will carry out a deep extragalactic survey over an area of ~10 sq. deg., enabling a most powerful supernova search program, and a galactic plane survey in integral field mode. Approximately 30% of the time will be open. Due to its versatility, SPACE is a ``self-sufficient'' observatory which can attack and solve the most compelling questions on the nature of the Dark Energy without complementary data from the Earth or space. Its unique wide-field capabilities in the near-IR make SPACE the ideal complement to JWST, ALMA, and the future 25-50 m telescopes.
