The Omori-Utsu law shows the temporal power-law-like decrease of the frequency of earthquake aftershocks and, interestingly, is found in a variety of complex systems/phenomena exhibiting catastrophes. Now, it may be interpreted as a characteristic response of such systems to large events. Here, hierarchical dynamics with the fast and slow degrees of freedom is studied on the basis of the Fokker-Planck theory for the load-state distribution to formulate the law as a relaxation process, in which diffusion coefficient in the space of the load state is treated as a fluctuating slow variable. The evolution equation reduced from the full Fokker-Planck equation and its Green's function are analyzed for the subdynamics governing the load state as the fast degree of freedom. It is shown that the subsystem has the temporal translational invariance in the logarithmic time, not in the conventional time, and consequently the aging phenomenon appears.

We investigate the effect of oxygen vacancies and hydrogen dopants at the surface and inside slabs of LaAlO3, SrTiO3, and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures on the electronic properties by means of electronic structure calculations as based on density functional theory. Depending on the concentration, the presence of these defects in LaAlO3 slab can suppress the surface conductivity. In contrast, in insulating SrTiO3 slabs already very small concentrations of oxygen vacancies or hydrogen dopant atoms induce a finite occupation of the conduction band. Surface defects in insulating LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure slabs with three LaAlO3 overlayers lead to the emergence of interface conductivity. Calculated defect formation energies reveal strong preference of hydrogen dopant atoms for surface sites for all structures and concentrations considered. Strong decrease of the defect formation energy of hydrogen adatoms with increasing thickness of the LaAlO3 overlayer and crossover from positive to negative values, taken together with the metallic conductivity induced by hydrogen adatoms, seamlessly explains the semiconductor-metal transition observed for these heterostructures as a function of the overlayer thickness. Moreover, we show that the potential drop and concomitant shift of (layer resolved) band edges is suppressed for the metallic configuration. Finally, magnetism with stable local moments, which form atomically thin magnetic layers at the interface, is generated by oxygen vacancies either at the surface or the interface, or by hydrogen atoms buried at the interface. In particular, oxygen vacancies in the TiO2 interface layer cause drastic downshift of the 3d e_g states of the Ti atoms neighboring the vacancies, giving rise to strongly localized magnetic moments, which add to the two-dimensional background magnetization.

The demonstration of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and superconducting properties in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures has stimulated intense research activity in recent ten years. The 2DEG has unique properties that are promising for applications in all-oxide electronic devices. The superconductivity in such heterostructures has been observed below 300 mK. For superconductivity applications it is desirable to have more wide temperature of the existence range and the ability to control superconductivity properties by external stimulus. Based on first-principles calculations and theoretical consideration we show that all-oxide heterostructures incorporating ferroelectric constituent, such as BaTiO$_3$/La$_2$CuO$_4$, allow creating 2DEG. We predict a possibility of a high temperature guasi-two-dimensional superconductivity state. This state could be switchable between superconducting and conducting states by ferroelectric polarization reversal. We also discuss that such structures must be more simple for preparation. The proposed concept of ferroelectrically controlled interface superconductivity offers the possibility to design novel electronic devices.

The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of the heterostructures consisting of single crystalline LaMnO$_3$ samples with different crystallographic orientations covered by the epitaxial ferroelectric Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$ film has been studied. Results obtained for the heterostructure have been compared with the electrical resistivity of the single crystalline LaMnO$_3$ without the film. It was found that for the samples with the films where the polarization axis is perpendicular to the crystal surface the electrical resistivity strongly decreases, and at the temperature below ~160 K undergoes the insulator-metal transition. Ab-initio calculations were also performed for the structural and electronic properties of the BaTiO$_3$/LaMnO$_3$ heterostructure. Transition to the 2D electron gas at the interface is shown.

We investigate the influence of confinement on the positional order of a quasi-1D electron system trapped on the surface of liquid helium. We find evidence that the melting of the Wigner solid (WS) depends on the confinement strength, as well as electron density and temperature. A reentrant solid-liquid-solid transition is observed for increasing electron density under constant electrostatic confinement. As the electron row number $N_y$ changes, varying commensurability results in a modulation of the WS order, even when $N_y$ is large (several tens). This is confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.

The role of electronic correlation effects for a realistic description of the electronic properties of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures as covered by the on-site Coulomb repulsion within the GGA+U approach is investigated. Performing a systematic variation of the values of the Coulomb parameters applied to the Ti 3d and La 4f orbitals we put previous suggestions to include a large value for the La 4f states into perspective. Furthermore, our calculations provide deeper insight into the band gap landscape in the space spanned by these Coulomb parameters and the resulting complex interference effects. In addition, we identify important correlations between the local Coulomb interaction within the La 4f shell, the band gap, and the atomic displacements at the interface. In particular, these on-site Coulomb interactions influence buckling within the LaO interface layer, which via its strong coupling to the electrostatic potential in the LAO overlayer causes considerable shifts of the electronic states at the surface and eventually controls the band gap.

Recently the unusual metallic state with a substantially non-uniform distribution of a charge and mag\-ne\-tic density in CoO$_2$ planes was found experimentally in the Na$_x$CoO$_2$ compound with $x>0.6$. We have investigated an origin of such electron disproportionation in the lamellar sodium cobaltates by calculating the ion states as a function of a strength of the electron correlations in the $d$(Co)-shells within the GGA+U approximation for the system with a realistic crystal structure. It was found that the nonuniformity of spin and charge densities are induced by an ordering of the sodium cations and enhanced correlations. Two important magnetic states of cobalt lattice competing with each other at realistic values of the correlation parameter were found~---~low spin hexagons (LS) and higher spin kagomé lattice (HS-KSL). In the heterogeneous metallic HS-KSL phase magnetic Co ions form a kagomé structure. In LS phase the kagomé pattern is decomposed into hexagons and Co ions possess minimal values of their spin. Coexistence of these states could explain the emergence of the disproportionation with the peculiar kagomé structure experimentally revealed in previous studies of the cobaltates.

Moreover, we investigated the influence of surface reconstruction on the density of states and determined the change of the local density of states at the Fermi level with increasing distance from the surface for bare LaAlO3 and for a conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. The study of the adsorption phenomenon of helium began many decades ago with the discovery of graphite as a homogeneous substrate for investigation of physically adsorbed monolayer films. In particular, helium monoatomic layers on graphite were found to exhibit a very rich phase diagram.
In the present work we have investigated the adsorption phenomenon of helium atoms on graphene and silicene substrates by means of density functional theory with Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Helium-substrate and helium-helium interactions were considered from first principles. Vibrational properties of adsorbed monolayers have been used to explore the stability of the system. This approach reproduces results describing the stability of a helium monolayer on graphene calculated by quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations for low and high coverage cases. However, for the moderate coverage value there is discrepancy with QMC results due to the lack of helium zero point motion.

A network of line defects with flat bands appears at the interfaces between two slightly twisted graphite structures. Due to the flat band the probability to find high temperature superconductivity at these quasi one-dimensional corridors is strongly enhanced. When the network of superconducting lines is dense it becomes effectively two-dimensional. The model provides an explanation for several reports on the observation of superconductivity up to room temperature in different oriented graphite samples, graphite powders as well as graphite-composite samples published in the past.

In recent years the problem of correct description of quantum fluids in the confined geometry at nanoscale length has emerged. It has been recognized that the quantum fluids at these circumstances can be considered as a new state of quantum matter due to close values between characteristic lengths for these quantum liquids and the size of geometrical confinement and significant contribution from the surface atoms. So one has to apply new physics to describe such systems with taking into account their complex nature. For example, last two years the attempts to develop the fractionalized two-fluid hydrodynamics for nanoporous media with fractal dimensions have been made. The actuality of such new hydrodynamics becomes very clear for the last development in chemical synthesis of different kind of aerogels with nanopore structure as well as numerous studies of nanoporous substances. One of the interesting obtained results that density waves (the first sound) and temperature waves (the second sound) become strong coupled even in the absence of viscosity, so it is purely geometric effect of fractal space of nanopores. In the present report we will review the procedure, results and discuss the issues for this approach.

In the Bose-Einstein condensation of interacting atoms or molecules such as 87Rb, 23Na and 7Li, the theoretical understanding of the transition temperature is not always obvious due to the interactions or zero point energy which cannot be exactly taken into account. The S-wave collision model fails sometimes to account for the condensation temperatures. In this work, we look at the problem within the nonextensive statistics which is considered as a possible theory describing interacting systems. The generalized energy Uq and the particle number Nq of boson gas are given in terms of the nonextensive parameter q. q>1 (q<1) implies repulsive (attractive) interaction with respect to the perfect gas. The generalized condensation temperature Tcq is derived versus Tc given by the perfect gas theory. Thanks to the observed condensation temperatures, we find q ~ 0.1 for 87Rb atomic gas, q ~ 0.95 for 7Li and q ~ 0.62 for 23Na. It is concluded that the effective interactions are essentially attractive for the three considered atoms, which is consistent with the observed temperatures higher than those predicted by the conventional theory.

Heavy electrons in superconducting materials are widely studied with the Kondo lattice t-J model. Numerical results have shown that the Fermi surface of these correlated particles undergoes a flattening effect according to the coupling degree J. This behaviour is not easy to understand from the theoretical point of view within standard Fermi-Dirac statistics and non-standard theories such as fractional exclusion statistics for anyons and Tsallis nonextensive statistics. The present work is an attempt to account for the heavy electron distribution within incomplete statistics (IS) which is developed for complex systems with interactions which make the statistics incomplete such that sum_i p_i^q=1. The parameter q, when different from unity, characterizes the incompleteness of the statistics. It is shown that the correlated electrons can be described with the help of IS with q related to the coupling constant J in the context of Kondo model

Longitudinal sound wave propagation has been studied in an aerogel-liquid $^4$He system for various porosities of aerogel. The superfluid transition was identified as the absorption peak, whose magnitude was suppressed by aerogel. The sound velocity was analyzed within a hydrodynamic theory in both normal and superfluid phases. The absorption peak due to phonon-roton interaction around 1 K was not observed even with the most porous aerogel. The low temperature sound velocity and attenuation show that direct collisions of phonons with aerogel strands plays an important role in the acoustic properties.

Abstract:
The magnetic properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at microkelvin temperatures (down to 170 $μ$K) and ultra small magnetic fields ($0.02\sim6.21$ mT) are investigated experimentally for the first time. The simultaneously measured ac susceptibility and static magnetization show neither evidence of the magnetic ordering, superconductivity down to the lowest temperatures nor conventional Landau Fermi-Liquid…

The magnetic properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at microkelvin temperatures (down to 170 $μ$K) and ultra small magnetic fields ($0.02\sim6.21$ mT) are investigated experimentally for the first time. The simultaneously measured ac susceptibility and static magnetization show neither evidence of the magnetic ordering, superconductivity down to the lowest temperatures nor conventional Landau Fermi-Liquid behavior. The results imply the magnetic transition temperature in undoped CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ is very close to absolute 0 K. The possibility for proximity of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ to the quantum critical point without any do** is discussed.

Abstract:
An influence of high magnetic fields on hyperfine interaction in the rare-earth ions with non-magnetic ground state (Van Vleck ions) is theoretically investigated for the case of $Tm^{3+}$ ion in axial symmetrical crystal electric field (ethylsulphate crystal). It is shown that magnetic-field induced distortions of $4f$-electron shell lead to essential changes in hyperfine magnetic field at the…

It is shown that magnetic-field induced distortions of $4f$-electron shell lead to essential changes in hyperfine magnetic field at the nucleus. The proposed theoretical model is in agreement with recent experimental data.

Abstract:
The nuclear magnetic relaxation in scandium metal is investigated at liquid helium temeprature for both single crystal and powder samples. The obtained temperature and field dependence of the Korringa constant are described by the means of the spin uctuation theory. It is shown that one of the reason for the high field decreasing of the relaxation rate is the quenching of spin uctuations. The ot…

The obtained temperature and field dependence of the Korringa constant are described by the means of the spin uctuation theory. It is shown that one of the reason for the high field decreasing of the relaxation rate is the quenching of spin uctuations. The other possible reason is the magnetic impurity influence. The reasons of the existing variations of the Korringa constant are discussed. The possible sources of non-single exponential relaxation are investigated.
