A Hamiltonian two-field gyrofluid model is used to investigate the dynamics of an electron-ion collisionless plasma subject to a strong ambient magnetic field, within a spectral range extending from the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) scales to the electron skin depth. This model isolates Alfvén, Kinetic Alfvén and Inertial Kinetic Alfvén waves that play a central role in space plasmas, and extends standard reduced fluid models to broader ranges of the plasma parameters. Recent numerical results are reviewed, including (i) the reconnection-mediated MHD turbulence develo** from the collision of counter-propagating Alfvén wave packets, (ii) the specific features of the cascade dynamics in strongly imbalanced turbulence, including a possible link between the existence of a spectral transition range and the presence of co-propagating wave interactions at sub-ion scales, for which new simulations are reported, (iii) the influence of the ion-to-electron temperature ratio in two-dimensional collisionless magnetic reconnection. The role of electron finite Larmor radius corrections is pointed out and the extension of the present model to a four-field gyrofluid model is discussed. Such an extended model accurately describes electron finite Larmor radius effects at small or moderate values of the electron beta parameter, and also retains the coupling to slow magnetosonic waves.

A two-field gyrofluid model including ion finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections, magnetic fluctuations along the ambient field and electron inertia is used to study two-dimensional reconnection in a low $β_e$ collisionless plasma, in a plane perpendicular to the ambient field. Both moderate and large values of the ion-to-electron temperature ratio $τ$ are considered. The linear growth rate of the tearing instability is computed for various values of $τ$, confirming the convergence to reduced electron magnetodynamics (REMHD) predictions in the large $τ$ limit. Comparisons with analytical estimates in several limit cases are also presented. The nonlinear dynamics leads to a fully-developed turbulent regime that appears to be sensitive to the value of the parameter $τ$. For $τ= 100$, strong large-scale velocity shears trigger Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, leading to the propagation of the turbulence through the separatrices, together with the formation of eddies of size of the order of the electron skin depth. In the $τ= 1$ regime, the vortices are significantly smaller and their accurate description requires that electron FLR effects be taken into account.

During their non-linear evolution, these thin current sheets can become unstable to the formation of plasmoids, which allows the magnetic reconnection process to reach high reconnection rates. We carry out a detailed study of the impact of a finite $β_e$, which also implies finite electron Larmor radius effects, on the collisionless plasmoid instability. This study is conducted through a comparison of gyrofluid and gyrokinetic simulations. The comparison shows in general a good capability of the gyrofluid models in predicting the plasmoid instability observed with gyrokinetic simulations. We show that the effects of $β_e$ promotes the plasmoid growth. The impact of the closure applied during the derivation of the gyrofluid model is also studied through the comparison of the energy variation.

Non-collisional current sheets that form during the nonlinear development of magnetic reconnection are characterized by a small thickness, of the order of the electron skin depth. They can become unstable to the formation of plasmoids, which allows the magnetic reconnection process to reach high reconnection rates. In this work, we investigate the marginal stability conditions for the development of plasmoids when the forming current sheet is purely collisionless and in the presence of a strong guide field. We analyze the geometry that characterizes the reconnecting current sheet, and what promotes its elongation. Once the reconnecting current sheet is formed, we identify the regimes for which it is plasmoid unstable. Our study shows that plasmoids can be obtained, in this context, from current sheets with an aspect ratio much smaller than in the collisional regime, and that the plasma flow channel of the marginally stable current layers maintains an inverse aspect ratio of $0.1$.

The linear and nonlinear evolutions of the tearing instability in a collisionless plasma with a strong guide field are analyzed on the basis of a two-field Hamiltonian gyrofluid model. The model is valid for a low ion temperature and a finite $β_e$. The finite $β_e$ effect implies a magnetic perturbation along the guide field direction and electron finite Larmor radius effects. A Hamiltonian derivation of the model is presented. A new dispersion relation of the tearing instability is derived for the case $β_e=0$ and tested against numerical simulations. For $β_e \ll 1$ the equilibrium electron temperature is seen to enhance the linear growth rate, whereas we observe a stabilizing role when electron finite Larmor radius effects become more relevant. In the nonlinear phase, a double "faster-than-exponential" growth is observed, similarly to what occurs in the presence of ion finite Larmor radius effects. Energy transfers are analyzed and the conservation laws associated with the Casimir invariants of the model are also discussed. Numerical simulations seem to indicate that finite $β_e$ effects do not produce qualtitative modifications in the structures of the Lagrangian invariants associated with Casimirs of the model.

We derive and analyze a dispersion relation for the growth rate of collisionless tearing modes, driven by electron inertia and accounting for equilibrium electron temperature anisotropy in a strong guide field regime. For this purpose, a new gyrofluid model is derived and subsequently simplified to make the derivation of the dispersion relation treatable analytically. The main simplifying assumptions consist in assuming cold ions, neglecting electron finite Larmor radius effects, decoupling ion gyrocenter fluctuations and considering $β_{\perp_e} \ll 1$, with $β_{\perp_e}$ indicating the ratio between the perpendicular electron thermal pressure and the magnetic pressure exerted by the guide field. This simplified version of the gyrofluid model is shown to possess a noncanonical Hamiltonian structure. The dispersion relation is obtained by applying the theory of asymptotic matching and does not predict an enhancement of the growth rate as the ratio $Θ_e$, between perpendicular and parallel equilibrium electron temperatures, increases. This indicates a significant difference with respect to the case of absent or moderate guide field. For an equilibrium magnetic shear length of the order of the perpendicular sonic Larmor radius and at a fixed $β_{\perp_e}$, we obtain that the tearing mode in the strong guide field regime gets actually weakly damped, as $Θ_e$ increases. In the isotropic limit $Θ_e=1$, the dispersion relation reduces to a previously known formula. The analytical predictions are tested against numerical simulations showing a very good quantitative agreement. We also provide a detailed discussion of the range of validity of the derived dispersion relation and of the compatibility among the different adopted assumptions.

A Hamiltonian six-field gyrofluid model is constructed, based on closure relations derived from the so-called "quasi-static" gyrokinetic linear theory where the fields are assumed to propagate with a parallel phase velocity much smaller than the parallel particle thermal velocities. The main properties of this model, primarily aimed at exploring basic phenomena of interest for space plasmas such as the solar wind, are its ability to provide a reasonable agreement with kinetic theory for linear low-frequency modes, and at the same time to ensure a Hamiltonian structure in the absence of explicit dissipation. The model accounts for equilibrium temperature anisotropy, ion and electron finite Larmor radius corrections, electron inertia, magnetic fluctuations along the direction of a strong guide field, and parallel Landau dam**. Remarkably, the quasi-static closure leads to exact expressions for the nonlinear terms involving gyroaveraged electromagnetic perturbations. One of the consequences is that a rather natural identification of the Hamiltonian structure of the model becomes possible when Landau dam** is neglected. A slight variant of the model consists of a four-field Hamiltonian reduction of the original six-field model, which we use for the subsequent linear analysis. In the latter, the dispersion relations of kinetic Alfvén waves and the firehose instability are shown to be correctly reproduced, relatively far in the sub-ion range (depending on the plasma parameters), while the spectral range where the slow-wave dispersion relation and the field-swelling instabilities are precisely described is less extended. This loss of accuracy originates from the breaking of the condition of small phase velocity, relative to the parallel thermal velocity of the electrons (for kinetic Alfvén waves and firehose instability) or of the ions (in the case of the field-swelling instabilities).

The linear stability of chains of magnetic vortices in a plasma is investigated analytically in two dimensions by means of a reduced fluid model assuming a strong guide field and accounting for equilibrium electron temperature anisotropy. The chain of magnetic vortices is modelled by means of the classical "cat's eyes" solutions and the linear stability is studied by analysing the second variation of a conserved functional, according to the Energy-Casimir method. The stability analysis is carried out on the domain bounded by the separatrices of the vortices. Two cases are considered, corresponding to a ratio between perpendicular equilibrium ion and electron temperature much greater or much less than unity, respectively. In the former case, equilibrium flows depend on an arbitrary function. Stability is attained if the equilibrium electron temperature anisotropy is bounded from above and from below, with the lower bound corresponding to the condition preventing the firehose instability. A further condition sets an upper limit to the amplitude of the vortices, for a given choice of the equilibrium flow. For cold ions, two sub-cases have to be considered. In the first one, equilibria correspond to those for which the velocity field is proportional to the local Alfvén velocity. Stability conditions imply: an upper limit on the amplitude of the flow, which automatically implies firehose stability, an upper bound on the electron temperature anisotropy and again an upper bound on the size of the vortices. The second sub-case refers to equilibrium electrostatic potentials which are not constant on magnetic flux surfaces and the resulting stability conditions correspond to those of the first sub-case in the absence of flow.

Inspired by an approach proposed previously for the incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equations, we present a general framework for the a posteriori analysis of the equations of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) on a torus of arbitrary dimension d; this setting involves a Sobolev space of infinite order, made of C^infinity vector fields (with vanishing divergence and mean) on the torus. Given any approximate solution of the MHD Cauchy problem, its a posteriori analysis with the method of the present work allows to infer a lower bound on the time of existence of the exact solution, and to bound from above the Sobolev distance of any order between the exact and the approximate solution. In certain cases the above mentioned lower bound on the time of existence is found to be infinite, so one infers the global existence of the exact MHD solution. We present some applications of this general scheme; the most sophisticated one lives in dimension d=3, with the ABC flow (perturbed magnetically) as an initial datum, and uses for the Cauchy problem a Galerkin approximate solution in 124 Fourier modes. We illustrate the conclusions arising in this case from the a posteriori analysis of the Galerkin approximant; these include the derivation of global existence of the exact MHD solution with the ABC datum, when the dimensionless viscosity and resistivity are equal and stay above an explicitly given threshold value.

It is found that typically both the energy and magnetic helicity at scales shorter than electron skin depth have direct cascade, while at large scales the helicity has an inverse cascade as established earlier for reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is also found that the introduction of gyro-effects allows for the existence of negative temperature (conjugate to energy) states and the condensation of energy to the large scales. Comparisons between two- and three-dimensional extended MHD models (MHD with two-fluid effects) show qualitative agreement between the two.

Reduced fluid models including electron inertia and ion finite Larmor radius corrections are derived asymptotically, both from fluid basic equations and from a gyrofluid model. They apply to collisionless plasmas with small ion-to-electron equilibrium temperature ratio and low $β_e$, where $β_e$ indicates the ratio between the equilibrium electron pressure and the magnetic pressure exerted by a strong, constant and uniform magnetic guide field. The consistency between the fluid and gyrofluid approaches is ensured when choosing ion closure relations prescribed by the underlying ordering. A two-field reduction of the gyrofluid model valid for arbitrary equilibrium temperature ratio is also introduced, and is shown to have a noncanonical Hamiltonian structure. This model provides a convenient framework for studying kinetic Alfvén wave turbulence, from MHD to sub-$d_e$ scales (where $d_e$ holds for the electron skin depth). Magnetic energy spectra are phenomenologically determined within energy and generalized helicity cascades in the perpendicular spectral plane. Arguments based on absolute statistical equilibria are used to predict the direction of the transfers, pointing out that, within the sub-ion range associated with a $k_\perp^{-7/3}$ transverse magnetic spectrum, the generalized helicity could display an inverse cascade if injected at small scales, for example by reconnection processes.

Reduced fluid models for collisionless plasmas including electron inertia and finite Larmor radius corrections are derived for scales ranging from the ion to the electron gyroradii. Based either on pressure balance or on the incompressibility of the electron fluid, they respectively capture kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) or whistler waves (WWs), and can provide suitable tools for reconnection and turbulence studies. Both isothermal regimes and Landau fluid closures permitting anisotropic pressure fluctuations are considered. For small values of the electron beta parameter $β_e$, a perturbative computation of the gyroviscous force valid at scales comparable to the electron inertial length is performed at order $O(β_e)$, which requires second-order contributions in a scale expansion. Comparisons with kinetic theory are performed in the linear regime. The spectrum of transverse magnetic fluctuations for strong and weak turbulence energy cascades is also phenomenologically predicted for both types of waves. In the case of moderate ion to electron temperature ratio, a new regime of KAW turbulence at scales smaller than the electron inertial length is obtained, where the magnetic energy spectrum decays like $k_\perp^{-13/3}$, thus faster than the $k_\perp^{-11/3}$ spectrum of WW turbulence.

A comprehensive study of a reduced version of Lust's equations, the extended magnetohydrodynamic (XMHD) model obtained from the two-fluid theory for electrons and ions with the enforcement of quasineutrality, is given. Starting from the Hamiltonian structure of the fully three-dimensional theory, a Hamiltonian two-dimensional incompressible four-field model is derived. In this way energy conservation along with four families of Casimir invariants are naturally obtained. The construction facilitates various limits leading to the Hamiltonian forms of Hall, inertial, and ideal MHD, with their conserved energies and Casimir invariants. Basic linear theory of the four-field model is treated, and the growth rate for collisionless reconnection is obtained. Results from nonlinear simulations of collisionless tearing are presented and interpreted using, in particular normal fields, a product of the Hamiltonian theory that gives rise to simplified equations of motion.

The data for $2 < Q^2 < 5$ GeV$^2$ were taken in the HERA I running period and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 114 pb$^{-1}$. The data for $5 < Q^2 < 80$ GeV$^2$ are from both HERA I and HERA II periods and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 468 pb$^{-1}$. The decay modes analysed were $μ^+μ^-$ and $J/ψ(1S) π^+π^-$ for the $ψ(2S)$ and $μ^+μ^-$ for the $J/ψ(1S)$. The cross-section ratio $σ_{ψ(2S)}/σ_{J/ψ(1S)}$ has been measured as a function of $Q^2, W$ and $t$. The results are compared to predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production.

Contrary to evidence presented for such a state around 1.52 GeV in a previous ZEUS analysis using a sample of 121 pb$^{-1}$ taken in 1996-2000, no resonance peak was found in the $p(\bar{p})K^0_S$ invariant-mass distribution in the range 1.45-1.7 GeV. The high-precision HERA data allows searches up to TeV scales for Beyond the Standard Model contributions to electron-quark scattering. Combined measurements of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections in neutral and charged current $ep$ scattering corresponding to a luminosity of around 1 fb$^{-1}$ have been used in this analysis. A new approach to the beyond the Standard Model analysis of the inclusive $ep$ data is presented; simultaneous fits of parton distribution functions together with contributions of "new physics" processes were performed. Results are presented considering a finite radius of quarks within the quark form-factor model. The resulting 95% C.L. upper limit on the effective quark radius is $0.43\cdot 10^{-16}$ cm.

A simultaneous fit of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and electroweak parameters to HERA data on deep inelastic scattering is presented. The input data are the neutral current and charged current inclusive cross sections which were previously used in the QCD analysis leading to the HERAPDF2.0 PDFs. In addition, the polarisation of the electron beam was taken into account for the ZEUS data recorded between 2004 and 2007. Results on the vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z boson to u- and d-type quarks, on the value of the electroweak mixing angle and the mass of the W boson are presented. The values obtained for the electroweak parameters are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Reduced magnetohydrodynamics is a simplified set of magnetohydrodynamics equations with applications to both fusion and astrophysical plasmas, possessing a noncanonical Hamiltonian structure and consequently a number of conserved functionals. We propose a new discretisation strategy for these equations based on a discrete variational principle applied to a formal Lagrangian. The resulting integrator preserves important quantities like the total energy, magnetic helicity and cross helicity exactly (up to machine precision). As the integrator is free of numerical resistivity, spurious reconnection along current sheets is absent in the ideal case. If effects of electron inertia are added, reconnection of magnetic field lines is allowed, although the resulting model still possesses a noncanonical Hamiltonian structure. After reviewing the conservation laws of the model equations, the adopted variational principle with the related conservation laws are described both at the continuous and discrete level. We verify the favourable properties of the variational integrator in particular with respect to the preservation of the invariants of the models under consideration and compare with results from the literature and those of a pseudo-spectral code.

Moment closures of the Vlasov-Amp{è}re system, whereby higher moments are represented as functions of lower moments with the constraint that the resulting fluid system remains Hamiltonian, are investigated by using water-bag theory. The link between the water-bag formalism and fluid models that involve density, fluid velocity, pressure and higher moments is established by introducing suitable thermodynamic variables. The cases of one, two and three water-bags are treated and their Hamiltonian structures are provided. In each case, we give the associated fluid closures and we discuss their Casimir invariants. We show how the method can be extended to an arbitrary number of fields, i.e., an arbitrary number of water-bags and associated moments. The thermodynamic interpretation of the resulting models is discussed. Finally, a general procedure to derive Hamiltonian N-field fluid models is proposed.

The cross section is presented as a function of $β$ and $φ$, where $β=x/x_{\rm I\!P}$, $x$ is the Bjorken variable and $x_{\rm I\!P}$ is the proton fractional longitudinal momentum loss. The angle $φ$ is defined by the $γ^*-$dijet plane and the $γ^*-e^\pm$ plane in the rest frame of the diffractive final state. The $φ$ cross section is measured in bins of $β$. The results are compared to predictions from models based on different assumptions about the nature of the diffractive exchange.

Different variants of hybrid kinetic-fluid models are considered for describing the interaction of a bulk fluid plasma obeying MHD and an energetic component obeying a kinetic theory. Upon using the Vlasov kinetic theory for energetic particles, two planar Vlasov-MHD models are compared in terms of their stability properties. This is made possible by the Hamiltonian structures underlying the considered hybrid systems, whose infinite number of invariants makes the energy-Casimir method effective for determining stability. Equilibrium equations for the models are obtained from a variational principle and in particular a generalized hybrid Grad-Shafranov equation follows for one of the considered models. The stability conditions are then derived and discussed with particular emphasis on kinetic particle effects on classical MHD stability.

The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q^2 < 1000 GeV^2 using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb^{-1}. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q^2, Bjorken x, jet transverse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q^2. The running beauty-quark mass, m_b at the scale m_b, was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be 4.07 \pm 0.14 (fit} ^{+0.01}_{-0.07} (mod.) ^{+0.05}_{-0.00} (param.) ^{+0.08}_{-0.05} (theo) GeV.

The dependence on $\sqrt{s}$ was studied by normalising to the high-statistics measurement at $\sqrt{s} =318$ GeV. This led to the cancellation of a number of systematic effects both in data and theory. Predictions from next-to-leading-order QCD describe the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the data well.

Abstract:

This paper investigates hybrid kinetic-MHD models, where a hot plasma (governed by a kinetic theory) interacts with a fluid bulk (governed by MHD). Different nonlinear coupling schemes are reviewed, including the pressure-coupling scheme (PCS) used in modern hybrid simulations. This latter scheme suffers from being non-Hamiltonian and to not exactly conserve total energy. Upon adopting the Vlasov description for the hot component, the non-Hamiltonian PCS and a Hamiltonian variant are compared. Special emphasis is given to the linear stability of Alfvén waves, for which it is shown that a spurious instability appears at high frequency in the non-Hamiltonian version. This instability is removed in the Hamiltonian version.

Abstract:
From the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov equation, we build a Hamiltonian model for the first three moments of the Vlasov distribution function, namely, the density, the momentum density and the specific internal energy. We derive the Poisson bracket of this model from the Poisson bracket of the Vlasov equation, and we discuss the associated Casimir invariants.

We derive the conditions under which the fluid models obtained from the first two moments of Hamiltonian drift-kinetic systems of interest to plasma physics, preserve a Hamiltonian structure. The adopted procedure consists of determining closure relations that allow to truncate the Poisson bracket of the drift-kinetic system, expressed in terms of the moments, in such a way that the resulting operation is a Poisson bracket for functionals of the first two fluid moments. The analysis is carried out for a class of full drift-kinetic equations and also for drift-kinetic systems in which a splitting between an equilibrium distribution function and a perturbation is performed. In the former case we obtain that the only closure, not involving integral or differential operators, that leads to a Poisson bracket, corresponds to that of an ideal adiabatic gas made of molecules possessing one degree of freedom. In the latter case, Hamiltonian closures turn out to be those in which the second moment is a linear combination of the first two moments, which can be seen as a linearization of the Hamiltonian closure of the full drift-kinetic case. A number of weakly-3D Hamiltonian reduced fluid models of interest, for instance for tokamak plasmas, can be derived in this way and, viceversa given a fluid model with a Hamiltonian structure of a certain type, a parent Hamiltonian drift-kinetic model can then be identified. We make use of this correspondence to identify the drift-kinetic models from which Hamiltonian fluid models for magnetic reconnection and compressible plasma dynamics in the presence of a static but inhomogeneous magnetic field can be derived. The Casimir invariants of the Poisson brackets of the derived fluid models are also discussed.

An improved reconstruction method and greatly increased amount of data allows a finer binning in the high-x region of the neutral current cross section and leads to a measurement with much improved precision compared to a similar earlier analysis. The measurements are compared to Standard Model expectations based on a variety of recent parton distribution functions.

While most hybrid models in the plasma literature are non-Hamiltonian, this paper investigates a recent Hamiltonian variant in its two-dimensional configuration. The corresponding Hamiltonian structure is described along with its Casimir invariants. Then, the energy-Casimir method is used to derive explicit sufficient stability conditions, which imply a stable spectrum and suggest nonlinear stability.

Stability analyses for equilibria of the compressible reduced magnetohydrodynamics (CRMHD) model are carried out by means of the Energy-Casimir (EC) method. Stability results are compared with those obtained for ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) from the classical δW criterion. An identification of the terms in the second variation of the free energy functional for CRMHD with those of δW is made: two destabilizing effects present for CRMHD turn out to correspond to the kink and interchange instabilities in usual MHD, while the stabilizing roles of field line bending and compressibility are also identified in the reduced model. Also, using the EC method, stability conditions in the presence of toroidal flow are obtained. A formal analogy between CRMHD and a reduced incompressible model for magnetized rotating disks, due to Julien and Knobloch [EAS Pub. Series, 21, 81 (2006)], is discovered. In light of this analogy, energy stability analysis shows that the condition for magnetorotational instability (MRI) for the latter model, corresponds to the condition for interchange instability in CRMHD, with the Coriolis term and shear velocity playing the roles of the curvature term and pressure gradient, respectively. Using the EC method, stability conditions for the rotating disk model, for a large class of equilibria with possible non-uniform magnetic fields, are obtained. In particular, this shows it is possible for the MRI system to undergo, in addition to the MRI, another instability that is analogous to the kink instability. For vanishing magnetic field, the Rayleigh hydrodynamical stability condition is recovered.

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. The Z0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on eta_max < 3.0, where eta_max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep -> eZ0p* was measured to be sigma(ep -> eZ0p*) = 0.13 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. This is the first measurement of Z0 production in ep collisions.

The measurements were performed separately for positively and negatively polarised positron beams. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 135.5 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector in 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions F3 and F3(gamma)Z were determined by combining the e+p results presented in this paper with previously published e-p neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter A+ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. The measurements are well described by the predictions of the Standard Model.

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep->e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q2 < 1 GeV2 and gamma-p centre-of-mass energies in the region 142 < W(gamma-p) < 293 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 300 pb-1. Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, etajet, for jets with ETjet > 17 GeV and -1 < etajet < 2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of etajet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high etajet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alphas2) terms. Values of alphas(Mz) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of alphas(Mz) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is alphas(Mz) = 0.1206 +0.0023 -0.0022 (exp.) +0.0042 -0.0035 (th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision.
