Normal state properties of high angle grain boundaries in (Y,Ca)Ba2Cu3O7-delta
Abstract: By lithographically fabricating an optimised Wheatstone bridge geometry, we have been able to make accurate measurements of the resistance of grain boundaries in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-d between the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, and room temperature. Below Tc the normal state properties were assessed by applying sufficiently high currents. The behaviour of the grain boundary resistance ve… ▽ More

The Normal State Resistivity of Grain Boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7-delta
Abstract: Using an optimized bridge geometry we have been able to make accurate measurements of the properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta grain boundaries above Tc. The results show a strong dependence of the change of resistance with temperature on grain boundary angle. Analysis of our results in the context of band-bending allows us to estimate the height of the potential barrier present at the grain boundary i… ▽ More

Direct Observation of a Temperature Dependent 0-pi Junction Transition in a Mesoscopic High Critical Temperature Grain Boundary Junction
Abstract: We have observed, for the first time, a temperature dependent 0-pi junction crossover in a 45 symmetric [001] tilt grain boundary junction. Experimental data, obtained by a double phase-sensitive test based on a low inductance dc SQUID, show an anomalous nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the Josephson current, clear evidence of a critical current sign change at a temperature T*. At the same… ▽ More

Controllable Josephson current through a pseudo-spin-valve structure
Abstract: A thin Co/Cu/Permalloy (Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$) pseudo-spin-valve structure is sandwiched between superconducting Nb contacts. When the current is passed perpendicular to the plane of the film a Josephson critical current ($I_C$) is observed at 4.2 K, in addition to a magnetoresistance (MR) of $\sim$ 0.5 % at high bias. The hysteresis loop of the spin-valve structure can be cycled to modulate the ze… ▽ More

Proximity and Josephson effects in superconductor - antiferromagnetic Nb / γ-Fe50Mn50 heterostructures
Abstract: We study the proximity effect in superconductor (S), antiferromagnetic (AF) bilayers, and report the fabrication and measurement of the first trilayer S/AF/S Josephson junctions. The disordered f.c.c. alloy γ-Fe50Mn50 was used as the AF, and the S is Nb. Micron and sub-micron scale junctions were measured, and the scaling of $J_C (d_AF)$ gives a coherence length in the AF of 2.4 nm, which correl… ▽ More

Josephson effects in MgB2 meta masked ion damage junctions
Abstract: Ion beam damage combined with nanoscale focused ion beam direct milling was used to create manufacturable SNS type Josephson junctions in 100 nm thick MgB$_{2}$ with T$_{C}$ of 38 K. The junctions show non-hysteretic current - voltage characteristics between 36 and 4.2 K. Experimental evidence for the dc and ac Josephson effects in MgB$_{2}$ metal masked ion damage junctions are presented. This… ▽ More

A Directly Coupled Superconducting Quantum Interference Device Magnetometer Fabricated in Magnesium Diboride by Focused Ion Beam
Abstract: We report the fabrication of a directly coupled superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer in MgB2 using a focused ion beam (FIB) to create Josephson junctions in a 70 nm thick film of MgB2. The SQUID shows a voltage modulation (deltaV) of 175 mV at a temperature of 10 K and operates over a temperature range from 10 K to 24 K. We find excellent agreement between the measure… ▽ More

Vortex Channeling and the V-I Characteristic of YBa2Cu3O7 Low Angle Grain Boundaries
Abstract: We have performed V-I measurements on a thin film YBa2Cu3O7 4^o [001] tilt low angle grain boundary over an extensive range of temperature and field, verifying the presence of a linear characteristic. We report on the occurrence of the linear characteristic in its basic form and on the observation of V-I kinking into several, and in some cases numerous, linear segments. We interpret these findin… ▽ More
