The availability of real-time semantics greatly improves the core geometric functionality of SLAM systems, enabling numerous robotic and AR/VR applications. We present a new methodology for real-time semantic map** from RGB-D sequences that combines a 2D neural network and a 3D network based on a SLAM system with 3D occupancy map**. When segmenting a new frame we perform latent feature re-projection from previous frames based on differentiable rendering. Fusing re-projected feature maps from previous frames with current-frame features greatly improves image segmentation quality, compared to a baseline that processes images independently. For 3D map processing, we propose a novel geometric quasi-planar over-segmentation method that groups 3D map elements likely to belong to the same semantic classes, relying on surface normals. We also describe a novel neural network design for lightweight semantic map post-processing. Our system achieves state-of-the-art semantic map** quality within 2D-3D networks-based systems and matches the performance of 3D convolutional networks on three real indoor datasets, while working in real-time. Moreover, it shows better cross-sensor generalization abilities compared to 3D CNNs, enabling training and inference with different depth sensors. Code and data will be released on project page: http://**gwenwang95.github.io/SeMLaPS

Active stereo systems are used in many robotic applications that require 3D information. These depth sensors, however, suffer from stereo artefacts and do not provide dense depth estimates. In this work, we present the first self-supervised depth completion method for active stereo systems that predicts accurate dense depth maps. Our system leverages a feature-based visual inertial SLAM system to produce motion estimates and accurate (but sparse) 3D landmarks. The 3D landmarks are used both as model input and as supervision during training. The motion estimates are used in our novel reconstruction loss that relies on a combination of passive and active stereo frames, resulting in significant improvements in textureless areas that are common in indoor environments. Due to the nonexistence of publicly available active stereo datasets, we release a real dataset together with additional information for a publicly available synthetic dataset (TartanAir [42]) needed for active depth completion and prediction. Through rigorous evaluations we show that our method outperforms state of the art on both datasets. Additionally we show how our method obtains more complete, and therefore safer, 3D maps when used in a robotic platform.

The transport properties of dense QCD matter play a crucial role in the physics of neutron stars and their mergers, but are notoriously difficult to study with traditional quantum field theory tools. Specializing to the case of unpaired quark matter in beta equilibrium, we approach the problem through the machinery of holography, in particular the V-QCD and D3-D7 models, and derive results for the electrical and thermal conductivities and the shear and bulk viscosities. In addition we compare the bulk to shear viscosity ratio to the speed of sound and find that it violates the so-called Buchel bound. Our results differ dramatically from earlier predictions of perturbative QCD, the root causes and implications of which we analyze in detail.

Energy conditions, especially the null energy condition (NEC), are generically imposed on solutions to retain a physically sensible classical field theory and they also play an important role in the AdS/CFT duality. Using this duality, we study non-trivially deformed strongly coupled quantum field theories at large-$N_c$. The corresponding dual classical gravity constructions entail the use of radially non-monotonic D-brane distributions. The gravity backgrounds are supersymmetric and hence perturbatively stable, and do not possess curvature singularities. There are no short-cuts through the bulk spacetime for signal propagation which assures that the field theory duals are causal. Nevertheless, some of our solutions violate the NEC in the gravity dual. In these cases the non-monotonicity of the D-brane distributions is reflected in the properties of the renormalization group flow: none of the $c$-functions proposed in the literature are monotonic. This further suggests that the non-monotonic behavior of the $c$-functions within previously known anisotropic backgrounds does not originate from the breaking of Lorentz invariance. We surmise that NEC violations induced by quantum corrections also need to be considered in holographic duals, but can be studied already at the classical level.

With the aim of bridging the gap between high quality reconstruction and mobile robot motion planning, we propose an efficient system that leverages the concept of adaptive-resolution volumetric map**, which naturally integrates with the hierarchical decomposition of space in an octree data structure. Instead of a Truncated Signed Distance Function (TSDF), we adopt map** of occupancy probabilities in log-odds representation, which allows to represent both surfaces, as well as the entire free, i.e. observed space, as opposed to unobserved space. We introduce a method for choosing resolution -- on the fly -- in real-time by means of a multi-scale max-min pooling of the input depth image. The notion of explicit free space map** paired with the spatial hierarchy in the data structure, as well as map resolution, allows for collision queries, as needed for robot motion planning, at unprecedented speed. We quantitatively evaluate map** accuracy, memory, runtime performance, and planning performance showing improvements over the state of the art, particularly in cases requiring high resolution maps.

Then, we analyse the dynamics of various probe D$p$-branes in these backgrounds searching for potential brane-jet instabilities. In all these cases, such instabilities are absent. Finally, an alternative decay channel through tunnelling is investigated, focusing on one of the seven backgrounds. We do not find instabilities either, but the analysis remains inconclusive.

Vision-based Simultaneous Localization And Map** (VSLAM) is a mature problem in Robotics. Most VSLAM systems are feature based methods, which are robust and present high accuracy, but yield sparse maps with limited application for further navigation tasks. Most recently, direct methods which operate directly on image intensity have been introduced, capable of reconstructing richer maps at the cost of higher processing power. In this work, an edge-based monocular SLAM system (SE-SLAM) is proposed as a middle point: edges present good localization as point features, while enabling a structural semidense map reconstruction. However, edges are not easy to associate, track and optimize over time, as they lack descriptors and biunivocal correspondence, unlike point features. To tackle these issues, this paper presents a method to match edges between frames in a consistent manner; a feasible strategy to solve the optimization problem, since its size rapidly increases when working with edges; and the use of non-linear optimization techniques. The resulting system achieves comparable precision to state of the art feature-based and dense/semi-dense systems, while inherently building a structural semi-dense reconstruction of the environment, providing relevant structure data for further navigation algorithms. To achieve such accuracy, state of the art non-linear optimization is needed, over a continuous feed of 10000 edgepoints per frame, to optimize the full semi-dense output. Despite its heavy processing requirements, the system achieves near to real-time operation, thanks to a custom built solver and parallelization of its key stages. In order to encourage further development of edge-based SLAM systems, SE-SLAM source code will be released as open source.

The holographic description consists of $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}$ D7-brane probes in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ with electric and instantonic fields on their worldvolume. These correspond to fundamental strings and D3-branes dissolved on the D7-branes, respectively. Here we use this description to determine the spectrum of mesonic excitations. As expected for a charged superfluid we find non-relativistic, massless Goldstone modes. We also find extra ungapped modes that are not associated to the breaking of any global symmetries but to the supersymmetric nature of the ground state. If the quark mass is much smaller than the scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking a pseudo-Goldstone boson is also present. We highlight some new features that appear only for $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}> 2$. We show that, in the generic case of unequal R-symmetry charges, the dissolved strings and D3-branes blow up into a D5-brane supertube stretched between the D7-branes.

Half-maximal, $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$, sectors of $\,D=4\,$ $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging are investigated. We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain $\,\textrm{SO}(3)_{\textrm{R}}$-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supergravity. Finally, expressions for the restricted duality hierarchy are given and the vacuum structure is investigated. Five new non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are found numerically. The previously known $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ AdS vacua are also contained in our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model. Unlike when embedded in previously considered sectors with fewer fields, these vacua exhibit their full $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ supersymmetry within our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model.

We place the theory at finite isospin density $n_{\rm \tiny{I}}$ by turning on an isospin chemical potential $μ_{\rm \tiny{I}}=M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$, with $M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$ the quark mass. We also turn on two R-symmetry charge densities $n_1=n_2$. We show that the ground state is a supersymmetric, superfluid, color superconductor, namely a finite-density state that preserves a fraction of supersymmetry in which part of the global symmetries and part of the gauge symmetries are spontaneously broken. The holographic description consists of $N_{\rm \tiny{F}}$ D7-brane probes in $\mbox{AdS}_5 \times \mbox{S}^5$. The symmetry breaking is due to the dissolution of some D3-branes inside the D7-branes triggered by the electric field associated to the isospin charge. The massless spectrum contains Goldstone bosons and their fermionic superpartners. The massive spectrum contains long-lived, mesonic quasi-particles if $n_{\rm \tiny{I}} \ll μ_{\rm \tiny{I}}^3$, and no quasi-particles otherwise. We discuss the possibility that, despite the presence of mass scales and charge densities in the theory, conformal and relativistic invariance arise as emergent symmetries in the infrared.

The dynamics of surfaces and interfaces describe many physical systems, including fluid membranes, entanglement entropy and the coupling of defects to quantum field theories. Based on the formulation of submanifold calculus developed by Carter, we introduce a new variational principle for (entangling) surfaces. This principle captures all diffeomorphism constraints on surface/interface actions and their associated spacetime stress tensor. The different couplings to the geometric tensors appearing in the surface action are interpreted in terms of response coefficients within elasticity theory. An example of a surface action with edges at the two-derivative level is studied, including both the parity-even and parity-odd sectors. Its conformally invariant counterpart restricts the type of conformal anomalies that can appear in two-dimensional submanifolds with boundaries. Analogously to hydrodynamics, it is shown that classification methods can be used to constrain the stress tensor of (entangling) surfaces at a given order in derivatives. This analysis reveals a purely geometric parity-odd contribution to the Young modulus of a thin elastic membrane. Extending this novel variational principle to BCFTs and DCFTs in curved spacetimes allows to obtain the Ward identities for diffeomorphism and Weyl transformations. In this context, we provide a formal derivation of the contact terms in the stress tensor and of the displacement operator for a broad class of actions.

Holography for UV-incomplete gauge theories is important but poorly understood. A paradigmatic example is $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills coupled to $N_f$ quark flavors, which possesses a Landau pole at a UV scale $Λ_{LP}$. The dual gravity solution exhibits a UV singularity at a finite proper distance along the holographic direction. Despite this, holographic renormalization can be fully implemented via analytic continuation to an AdS solution. The presence of a UV cut-off manifests itself in several interesting ways. At energies $E \ll Λ_{LP}$ no pathologies appear, as expected from effective field theory. In contrast, at scales $E \lesssim Λ_{LP}$ the gravitational potential becomes repulsive, and at temperatures $T \lesssim Λ_{LP}$ the specific heat becomes negative. Although we focus on $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with flavor, our qualitative results apply to a much more general class of theories, since they only depend on the fact that the metric near the UV singularity is a hyper-scaling violating metric with exponent $θ> d-1$.

The latter is dual to a hyperscaling-violating, Lifshitz-like geometry with dynamical and hyperscaling-violating exponents $z=5$ and $θ=1$, respectively. If $ρ\ll 1$ then at intermediate energies there is also an approximate AdS$_4$ region, dual to a conformal Chern-Simons-Matter theory, in which the flow exhibits quasi-conformal dynamics. At zero temperature we compute the chemical potential and the equation of state and extract the speed of sound. At low temperature we compute the entropy density and extract the number of low-energy degrees of freedom. For quarks of non-zero mass $M_{\textrm{q}}$ the physics depends non-trivially on $ρ$ and $M_{\textrm{q}} N_{\textrm{c}}/λN_{\textrm{f}}$.

The D6-branes are smeared over the compact part of the geometry, which must be a six-dimensional nearly Kähler manifold in order to preserve supersymmetry. For massless quarks, the solutions flow in the IR to an $AdS_4$ fixed point dual to a Chern-Simons-matter theory. For light quarks the theories exhibit quasi-conformal dynamics (walking) at energy scales $m_q \ll E \ll λN_f / N$, with $λ= g_{\text{YM}}^2 N$ the 't Hooft coupling.

We study the holographic dual of a (2+1)-dimensional s-wave superfluid that breaks an abelian U(1) x U(1) global symmetry group to the diagonal U(1)_V. The model is inspired by Sen's tachyonic action, and the operator that condenses transforms in the bifundamental representation of the symmetry group. We focus on two configurations: the first one describes a marginal operator, and the phase diagram at finite temperature contains a first or a second order phase transition, depending on the parameters that determine the theory. In the second model the operator is relevant and the finite temperature transitions are always second order. In the latter case the conductivity for the current associated to the broken symmetry shows quasiparticle excitations at low temperatures, with mass given by the width of the superconducting gap. The suppression of spectral weight at low frequencies is also observed in the conductivity associated to the conserved symmetry, for which the DC value decreases as the temperature is reduced.

We study the gravitational duals of $d$-dimensional Yang-Mills theories with $d\leq 6$ in the presence of an ${\cal O} (N^2)$ density of heavy quarks, with $N$ the number of colors. For concreteness we focus on maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills, but our results apply to a larger class of theories with or without supersymmetry. The gravitational solutions describe renormalization group flows towards infrared scaling geometries characterized by fixed dynamical and hyperscaling-violating exponents. The special case $d=5$ yields an $AdS_3 \times \mathbb{R}^4 \times S^4$ geometry upon uplifting to M-theory. We discuss the multitude of physical scales that separate different dynamical regimes along the flows, as well as the validity of the supergravity description. We also present exact black brane solutions that encode the low-temperature thermodynamics.

The charged black holes arising from this simple model reflect the non-linearity of the gauge field and are thermodynamically stable. By analysing fluctuations of the system we corroborate that at low values of the temperature (or large chemical potential) backreaction effects from the branes are dominant. We also provide a generalisation of the Iqbal and Liu strategy to calculate the DC conductivity, in which a mass term for the gauge field fluctuation is included. This mass term gives the value of the residue of the pole at zero frequency in the imaginary part of the AC conductivity, as well as the running of the DC conductivity with the bulk radius.

A large set of relevant deformations of the ABJM field theory on a stack of M2 branes is captured holographically by D=4 N=8 SO(8)-gauged supergravity, which has accordingly been applied to study renormalisation group (RG) flows of the field theory between distinct superconformal phases. Recently, it has been discovered that this supergravity is not unique, and that a one-parameter family of gaugings of maximal supergravity exists. The parameter is an angle that measures the mixture of electric and magnetic vectors that gauge SO(8) dyonically. We construct and comprehensively characterise all domain walls between the critical points of the new supergravities with at least SU(3) invariance, which are expected to be dual to RG flows of new field theories defined at least at large N. We also construct some walls running off to infinity in scalar space, which we expect to be dual to Coulomb branch flows of these field theories.

We study finite temperature N=4 Super Yang-Mills (and more general gauge theories realized on intersecting D3-D7 branes) in the presence of dynamical massless fundamental matter fields at finite baryon charge density. We construct the holographic dual charged black hole solutions at first order in the flavor backreaction but exact in the charge density. The thermodynamical properties of the dual gauge theories coincide with the ones found in the usual charged D7-probe limit and the system turns out to be thermodynamically stable. By analyzing the higher order correction in the flavor backreaction, we provide a novel argument for the un-reliability of the charged probe approximation (and the present solution) in the extremality limit, i.e. at zero temperature.
We then consider scalar mesonic-like bound states, whose spectrum is dual to that of linearized fluctuations of D7-brane worldvolume fields around our gravity backgrounds. In particular we focus on a scalar field saturating the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound in the flavorless limit, and coupled to fields dual to irrelevant operators. By looking at quasinormal modes of this scalar, we find no signals of instabilities in the regime of validity of the solutions.

This is modeled by embedding a probe D7 brane in a background where the backreaction of massless D7 branes has been taken into account. The background, and hence the effects, are perturbative in the Veneziano parameter N_f/N_c, therefore giving small shifts of all magnitudes like the constituent mass, the quark condensate, and several transport coefficients. We provide qualitative results for the effect of flavor degrees of freedom on the probes. For example, the meson melting temperature is enhanced, while the screening length is diminished. We study the effective geometry felt by the fluctuations of open strings living on the worldvolume of probe D-branes in the presence of background electromagnetic fields. This is captured by an effective action consisting of a Maxwell term and a topological term, with the role of the metric played by the open string metric. Studying generalized Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates for stationary but non-static manifolds, we consider an open string membrane paradigm to obtain a generic formula for the DC transport coefficients, including the effect of external electromagnetic fields present on the worldvolume of the probe branes. We show that the previously studied singular shell, present when a critical electric field strength is turned on, behaves as a horizon for the open string degrees of freedom. The results of this analysis can be used to define a membrane paradigm for a very general class of spacetimes with non-diagonal metrics.

For small values of these two parameters the solution is given analytically up to second order. We study the thermodynamics of the system in the canonical and grand-canonical ensembles. We then analyze the energy loss of partons moving through the plasma, computing the jet quenching parameter and studying its dependence on the baryon density. Finally, we analyze certain "optical" properties of the plasma. The whole setup is generalized to non abelian strongly coupled plasmas engineered on D3-D7 systems with D3-branes placed at the tip of a generic singular Calabi-Yau cone. In all the cases, fundamental matter fields are introduced by means of homogeneously smeared D7-branes and the flavor symmetry group is thus a product of abelian factors.

First and second order transport coefficients are calculated for the strongly coupled N=4 SYM plasma coupled to massless fundamental matter in the Veneziano limit. The results, including among others the value of the bulk viscosity and some relaxation times, are presented at next-to-leading order in the flavor contribution. The bulk viscosity is found to saturate Buchel's bound. This result is also captured by an effective single-scalar five-dimensional holographic dual in the Chamblin-Reall class and it is suggested to hold, in the limit of small deformations, for generic plasmas with gravity duals, whenever the leading conformality breaking effects are driven by marginally (ir)relevant operators. This proposal is then extended to other relations for hydrodynamic coefficients, which are conjectured to be universal for every non-conformal plasma with a dual Chamblin-Reall-like description. Our analysis extends to any strongly coupled gauge theory describing the low energy dynamics of Nc>>1 D3-branes at the tip of a generic Calabi-Yau cone. Due to the electric field a special region in the D7-brane geometry, labelled the singular shell, appears generically, and the computation of correlators involves a careful study of the indicial exponents both at this singular region and at the horizon. We show that there is a unique choice consistent with the known expression for the electrical conductivity found by Karch and O'Bannon. We explore the parameter space spanned by the quark mass, the baryon density and the electric field. We find a region where the conductivity and photoproduction change rapidly and trace this behavior to competing effects which manifest themselves as a crossover behavior in the probe brane embeddings.

Abstract:
We analyze the charge diffusion and conductivity in a Dp/Dq holographic setup that is dual to a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in p+1 dimensions with N_f<< N_c flavour degrees of freedom at finite temperature and nonvanishing U(1) baryon number chemical potential. We provide a new derivation of the results that generalize the membrane paradigm to the present context. We perform a numerical ana…

We provide a new derivation of the results that generalize the membrane paradigm to the present context. We perform a numerical analysis in the particular case of the D3/D7 flavor system. The results obtained support the validity of the Einstein relation at finite chemical potential.

Abstract:
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we compute the spectral functions of thermal super Yang Mills at large N_c coupled to a small number of flavours of fundamental matter, N_f<<N_c, in the presence of a nonzero baryon density. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we compute the spectral functions of thermal super Yang Mills at large N_c coupled to a small number of flavours of fundamental matter, N_f<<N_c, in the presence of a nonzero baryon density. The holographic dual of such a theory involves the addition of probe D7-branes with a background worldvolume gauge field switched on, embedded in the geometry of a stack of black D3-branes. We perform the analysis in the vector and scalar channels which become coupled for nonzero values of the spatial momentum and baryon density. In addition, we obtain the effect of the presence of net baryon charge on the photon production. We also extract the conductivity and find perfect agreement with the results derived by Karch and O'Bannon in a macroscopic setup.

Abstract:
We complete the computation of viscous transport coefficients in the near horizon geometries that arise from a stack of black Dp-branes for p=2,...,6 in the decoupling limit. The main new result is the obtention of the bulk viscosity which, for all p, is found to be related to the speed of sound by the simple relation ζ/η= -2(v_s^2-1/p). For completeness the shear viscosity is rederived from gravitational perturbations in the shear and scalar channels. We comment on technical issues like the counterterms needed, or the possible dependence on the conformal frame.
