The high increase in the number of companies competing in mature markets makes customer retention an important factor for any company to survive. Thus, many methodologies (e.g., data mining and statistics) have been proposed to analyse and study customer retention. The validity of such methods is not yet proved though. This paper tries to fill this gap by empirically comparing two techniques: Customer churn-decision tree and logistic regression models. The paper proves the superiority of decision tree technique and stresses the needs for more advanced methods to churn modelling.

This study aims to develop and test an amalgamated conceptual framework based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and other models from social psychology, such as theory of reasoned action and TAM2 that captures the salient factors influencing the user adoption and acceptance of web-based learning systems. This framework has been applied to the study of higher educational institutions in the context of develo** as well as developed countries (e.g. Lebanon and UK). Additionally, the framework investigates the moderating effect of Hofstedes four cultural dimensions at the individual level and a set of individual differences (age, gender, experience and educational level) on the key determinants that affect the behavioral intention to use e-learning. A total of 1197 questionnaires were received from students who were using web-based learning systems at higher educational institutions in Lebanon and the UK with opposite scores on cultural dimensions. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to perform reliability and validity checks, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in conjunction with multi-group analysis method was used to test the hypothesized conceptual model. Our findings suggest that individual, social, cultural and organizational factors are important to consider in explaining students behavioral intention and usage of e-learning environments. The findings of this research contribute to the literature by validating and supporting the applicability of our extended TAM in the Lebanese and British contexts and provide several prominent implications to both theory and practice on the individual, organizational and societal levels.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) offers a means for university students to receive timely updates from virtual learning environments. However, despite its utility, only 21% of students surveyed at a Lebanese university claim to have ever used the technology. To investigate whether a cultural influence is affecting intention to use RSS, the survey was extended to the British context to conduct a cross-cultural comparison. Using the Technology Adoption Model (TAM) as a research framework, 437 students responded to a questionnaire containing four constructs: intention to use (INT); attitude towards benefit (ATT); perceived usefulness (PU); and perceived ease of use (PEOU). Principle components analysis (PCA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) were used to explore the psychometric qualities of the scale. The results show that adoption was significantly higher, but also modest, in the British context at 36%. Configural and metric invariance were fully supported, while scalar and factorial invariance were partially supported. Analysis reveals that, as a potential consequence of culture, there are significant differences between PU and PEOU across the two contexts studied, potentially as a consequence of culture. It is recommended that faculty demonstrate to students how RSS can be used effectively in order to increase awareness and emphasise usefulness.

Phishing is an online identity theft, which aims to steal sensitive information such as username, password and online banking details from victims. To prevent this, phishing education needs to be considered. Game based education is becoming more and more popular. This paper introduces a mobile game prototype for the android platform based on a story, which simplifies and exaggerates real life. The elements of a game design framework for avoiding phishing attacks were used to address the game design issues and game design principles were used as a set of guidelines for structuring and presenting information. The overall mobile game design was aimed to enhance the user's avoidance behaviour through motivation to protect themselves against phishing threats. The prototype mobile game design was presented on MIT App Inventor Emulator.

Two compact universal extra dimensional models are an interesting class of models for different theoretical and phenomenological issues, such as the justification of having three standard model fermion families, suppression of proton decay rate, dark matter parity from relics of the 6-dimensional Lorentz symmetry, origin of masses and mixings in the standard model. However, these theories are merely effective ones, with typically a reduced range of validity in their energy scale. We explore two limiting cases of the three standard model generations all propagating in the bulk or all localised to a brane, from the point of view of renormalisation group equation evolutions for the Higgs sector and for the neutrino sector of these models. The recent experimental results of the Higgs boson from the LHC allow, in some scenarios, stronger constraints on the cut-off scale to be placed, from the requirement of the stability of the Higgs potential.

The evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings and quark mixings are derived for the one-loop renormalization group equations in the two Universal Extra Dimension Models (UED), that is six-dimensional models, compactified in different possible ways to yield standard four space-time dimension. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed, such as the case of bulk propagating or localised brane fields. We discuss in both cases the evolution of the Yukawa couplings, the Jarlskog parameter and the CKM matrix elements, and we find that, for both scenarios, as we run up to the unification scale, significant renormalization group corrections are present. We also discuss the results of different observables of the five-dimensional UED model in comparison with these six-dimensional models and the model dependence of the results.

Anomaly mediation models are well motivated supersymmetry breaking scenarios which appear as alternatives to the mSUGRA paradigm. These models are quite compelling from the theoretical point of view and it is therefore important to test if they are also viable models for phenomenology. We perform a study of these models in the light of all standard flavour, collider and dark matter constraints, including also the recent Higgs boson measurements for the mass and signal strengths in the different decay channels. The minimal AMSB scenario can satisfy in part of its parameter space the dark matter requirement but is only marginally consistent with the current Higgs boson mass value. The HyperCharge-AMSB and Mixed Moduli-AMSB scenarios can better describe present data from dark matter, flavour, low energy physics and are consistent with the measured mass of the Higgs boson. The inclusion of the preferred signal strengths for the Higgs boson decay channels shows that for tan(beta) > 5 the HC-AMSB and MM-AMSB models can be consistent with the present Higgs boson data. In contrast the minimal AMSB has a narrower allowed range in tan(beta). These different AMSB scenarios, while consistent with present Higgs boson measurements, can be further tested by future more precise data in the Higgs sector.

We consider a five-dimensional Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model compactified on a S1/Z2 orbifold, and study the evolution of neutrino masses, mixing angles and phases for different values of tan beta and different radii of compactification. We consider the usual four dimensional Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model limit plus two extra-dimensional scenarios: where all matter superfields can propagate in the bulk, and where they are constrained to the brane. We discuss in both cases the evolution of the mass spectrum, the implications for the mixing angles and the phases. We find that a large variation for the Dirac phase is possible, which makes models predicting maximal leptonic CP violation especially appealing.

We discuss a five-dimensional Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model compactified on a $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold, looking at, in particular, the one-loop evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings for the quark sector and various flavor observables. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed, that is, where they are in the bulk or localised to the brane. The two possibilities give rise to quite different behaviours. By studying the implications of the evolution with the renormalisation group of the Yukawa couplings and of the flavor observables we find that, for a theory that is valid up to the unification scale, the case where fields are localised to the brane, with a large $\tanĪ²$, would be more easily distinguishable from other scenarios.

Anomaly mediation is a popular and well motivated supersymmetry breaking scenario. Different possible detailed realisations of this set-up are studied and actively searched for at colliders. Apart from limits coming from flavour, low energy physics and direct collider searches, these models are usually constrained by the requirement of reproducing the observations on dark matter density in the universe. We reanalyse these bounds and in particular we focus on the dark matter bounds both considering the standard cosmological model and alternative cosmological scenarios. These scenarios do not change the observable cosmology but relic dark matter density bounds strongly depend on them. We consider few benchmark points excluded by standard cosmology dark matter bounds and suggest that loosening the dark matter constraints is necessary in order to avoid a too strong (cosmological) model dependence in the limits that are obtained for these models. We also discuss briefly the implications for phenomenology and in particular at the Large Hadron Collider.
