Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), an experimental and theoretical study of changes in the electronic structure (dispersion dependencies) and corresponding modification of the energy band gap at the Dirac point (DP) for topological insulator (TI) $\mathrm{Mn}_{1-x} \mathrm{Ge}_x \mathrm{Bi}_2 \mathrm{Te}_4$ have been carried out with gradual replacement of magnetic Mn atoms by non-magnetic Ge atoms when concentration of the latter was varied from 10$\%$ to 75$\%$. It was shown that when Ge concentration increases then the bulk band gap decreases and reaches zero plateau in the concentration range of 45$\%$-60$\%$ while non-topological surface states (TSS) are present and exhibit an energy splitting of 100 and 70 meV in different types of measurements. It was also shown that TSS disappear from the measured band dispersions at a Ge concentration of about 40$\%$. DFT calculations of $\mathrm{Mn}_{1-x} \mathrm{Ge}_x \mathrm{Bi}_2 \mathrm{Te}_4$ band structure were carried out to identify the nature of observed band dispersion features and to analyze a possibility of magnetic Weyl semimetal state formation in this system. These calculations were performed for both antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) ordering types while the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength was varied or a strain (compression or tension) along the $c$-axis was applied. Calculations show that two different series of topological phase transitions (TPTs) may be implemented in this system depending on the magnetic ordering. At AFM ordering transition between TI and trivial insulator phase goes through the Dirac semimetal state, whereas for FM phase such route admits three intermediate states instead of one (TI - Dirac semimetal - Weyl semimetal - Dirac semimetal - trivial insulator).

The mechanism of the peculiar transport properties around the magnetic ordering temperature of semiconducting antiferromagnetic EuCd$_2$P$_2$ is not yet understood. With a huge peak in the resistivity observed above the Néel temperature, $T_{\rm N}=10.6\,\rm K$, it exhibits a colossal magnetoresistance effect. Recent reports on observations of ferromagnetic contributions above $T_{\rm N}$ as well as metallic behavior below this temperature have motivated us to perform a comprehensive characterization of this material, including its resistivity, heat capacity, magnetic properties and electronic structure. Our transport measurements revealed quite different temperature dependence of resistivity with the maximum at $14\,\rm K$ instead of previously reported $18\,\rm K$. Low-field susceptibility data support the presence of static ferromagnetism above $T_{\rm N}$ and show a complex behavior of the material at small applied magnetic fields. Namely, signatures of reorientation of magnetic domains are observed up to $T=16\,\rm K$. Our magnetization measurements indicate a magnetocrystalline anisotropy which also leads to a preferred alignment of the magnetic clusters above $T_{\rm N}$. The momentum-resolved photoemission experiments at temperatures from $24\,\rm K$ down to $2.5\,\rm K$ indicate the permanent presence of a fundamental band gap without change of the electronic structure when going through $T_N$ that is in contradiction with previous results. We performed \textit{ab initio} band structure calculations which are in good agreement with the measured photoemission data when assuming an antiferromagnetic ground state. Calculations for the ferromagnetic phase show a much smaller bandgap, indicating the importance of possible ferromagnetic contributions for the explanation of the colossal magnetoresistance effect in the related EuZn$_2$P$_2$.

We studied solid solutions between two isostructural Z$_2$ TIs, magnetic MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and nonmagnetic GeBi$_2$Te$_4$, with Z$_2$ invariants of 1;000 and 1;001, respectively. For high-quality, large mixed crystals of Ge$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$Bi$_2$Te$_4$, we observed linear x-dependent magnetic properties, composition-independent pairwise exchange interactions along with an easy magnetization axis. The bulk band gap gradually decreases to zero for $x$ from 0 to 0.4, before reopening for $x>0.6$, evidencing topological phase transitions (TPTs) between topologically nontrivial phases and the semimetal state. The TPTs are driven purely by the variation of orbital contributions. By tracing the x-dependent $6p$ contribution to the states near the fundamental gap, the effective spin-orbit coupling variation is extracted. As $x$ varies, the maximum of this contribution switches from the valence to the conduction band, thereby driving two TPTs. The gapless state observed at $x=0.42$ closely resembles a Dirac semimetal above the Neel temperature and shows a magnetic gap below, which is clearly visible in raw photoemission data. The observed behavior of the Ge$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$Bi$_2$Te$_4$ system thereby demonstrates an ability to precisely control topological and magnetic properties of TIs.

The discovery of a square magnetic-skyrmion lattice in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$, with the smallest so far found skyrmion diameter and without a geometrically frustrated lattice, has attracted significant attention, particularly for potential applications in memory devices and quantum computing. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of surface and bulk electronic structures of GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ by utilizing momentum-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements and first-principles calculations. We show how the electronic structure evolves during the antiferromagnetic transition when a peculiar helical order of 4$f$ magnetic moments within the Gd layers sets in. A nice agreement of the ARPES-derived electronic structure with the calculated one has allowed us to characterize the features of the Fermi surface (FS), unveil the nested region along the $k_z$ at the corner of the 3D FS, and reveal their orbital compositions. Our findings suggest that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction plays a decisive role in stabilizing the spiral-like order of Gd 4$f$ moments responsible for the skyrmion physics in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$. Our results provide a deeper understanding of electronic and magnetic properties of this material, which is crucial for predicting and develo** novel skyrmion-based devices.

We investigate single crystals of the trigonal antiferromagnet EuZn$_2$P$_2$ ($P\overline{3}m1$) by means of electrical transport, magnetization measurements, X-ray magnetic scattering, optical reflectivity, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and ab-initio band structure calculations (DFT+U). We find that the electrical resistivity of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ increases strongly upon cooling and can be suppressed in magnetic fields by several orders of magnitude (CMR effect). Resonant magnetic scattering reveals a magnetic ordering vector of $q = (0\, 0\, \frac{1}{2})$, corresponding to an $A$-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, below $T_{\rm N} = 23.7\,\rm K$. We find that the moments are canted out of the $a-a$ plane by an angle of about $40^{\circ}\pm 10^{\circ}$ degrees and aligned along the [100] in the $a-a$ plane. We observe nearly isotropic magnetization behavior for low fields and low temperatures which is consistent with the magnetic scattering results. The magnetization measurements show a deviation from the Curie-Weiss behavior below $\approx 150\,\rm K$, the temperature below which also the field dependence of the material's resistivity starts to increase. An analysis of the infrared reflectivity spectrum at $T=295\,\rm K$ allows us to resolve the main phonon bands and intra-/interband transitions, and estimate indirect and direct band gaps of $E_i^{\mathrm{opt}}=0.09\,\rm{eV}$ and $E_d^{\mathrm{opt}}=0.33\,\rm{eV}$, respectively, which are in good agreement with the theoretically predicted ones. The experimental band structure obtained by ARPES is nearly $T$-independent above and below $T_{\rm N}$. The comparison of the theoretical and experimental data shows a weak intermixing of the Eu 4$f$ states close to the $Γ$ point with the bands formed by the phosphorous 3$p$ orbitals leading to an induction of a small magnetic moment at the P sites.

The experimentally measured angle-resolved photoemission dispersion maps for MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ samples, which show different energy gaps at the Dirac point (DP), are compared with the results of theoretical calculations to find the conditions for the best agreement between theory and experiment. We have analyzed different factors which influence the Dirac gap width: (i) the surface van der Waals (SvdW) distance between the first and second septuple layers (SLs), (ii) the magnetic moment on Mn atoms, (iii) the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength for the surface Te and Bi atoms and related changes in the localization of the topological surface states (TSSs). It was shown that all these factors may change the gap width at the DP in a wide range from 5 to $\sim$90~meV. We show that the Dirac gap variation is mainly determined by the corresponding changes in the TSSs spatial distribution. The best agreement between the presented experimental data (with the Dirac gaps between $\sim$15 and 55~meV) and the calculations takes place for a slightly compressed SvdW interval (of about -3.5~\% compared to the bulk value) with modified SOC for surface atoms (that can occur in the presence of various defects in the near-surface region). We show that upon changing the values of the SvdW interval and surface SOC strength the TSSs spatial distribution shifts between the SLs with opposite magnetizations, which leads to a non-monotonic change in the Dirac gap size.

We present a quantum-mechanical description of quark-hadron fragmentation in a nuclear environment. It employs the path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics, which takes care of all phases and interferences, and which contains all relevant time scales, like production, coherence, formation, etc. The cross section includes the probability of pre-hadron (colorless dipole) production both inside and outside the medium. Moreover, it also includes inside-outside production, which is a typical quantum-mechanical interference effect (like twin-slit electron propagation). We observe a substantial suppression caused by the medium, even if the pre-hadron is produced outside the medium and no energy loss is involved. This important source of suppression is missed in the usual energy-loss scenario interpreting the effect of jet quenching observed in heavy ion collisions. This may be one of the reasons of a too large gluon density, reported by such analyzes.

The Berger model of perturbative fragmentation of quarks to pions is improved by providing an absolute normalization and kee** all terms in a (1-z) expansion, which makes the calculation valid at all values of fractional pion momentum z. We also replace the nonrelativistic wave function of a loosely bound pion by the more realistic procedure of projecting to the light-cone pion wave function, which in turn is taken from well known models. The full calculation does not confirm the (1-z)^2 behavior of the fragmentation function (FF) predicted in for $z>0.5$, and only works at very large z>0.95, where it is in reasonable agreement with phenomenological FFs. Otherwise, we observe quite a different z-dependence which grossly underestimates data at smaller z. The disagreement is reduced after the addition of pions from decays of light vector mesons, but still remains considerable. The process dependent higher twist terms are also calculated exactly and found to be important at large z and/or pT.

The charmonium wave functions are calculated with four known realistic potentials, and two models for the dipole cross section are tested. Very good agreement with data for the cross section of charmonium electroproduction is found in a wide range of $s$ and $Q^2$. Using the ingredients from those calculations we calculate also exclusive electroproduction of charmonia off nuclei. Here new effects become important, (i) color filtering of the $c\bar c$ pair on its trajectory through nuclear matter, (ii) dependence on the finite lifetime of the $c\bar c$ fluctuation (coherence length) and (iii) gluon shadowing in a nucleus compared to the one in a nucleon. Total coherent and incoherent cross sections for C, Cu and Pb as functions of $s$ are presented. The results can be tested with future electron-nucleus colliders or in the peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions.

Gluon shadowing which is the main source of nuclear effects for production of heavy flavored hadrons, remains unknown. We develop a light-cone dipole approach aiming at simplifying the calculations of nuclear shadowing for heavy flavor production, as well as the cross section which does not need next-to-leading and higher order corrections. A substantial process dependence of gluon shadowing is found at the scale of charm mass manifesting a deviation from QCD factorization. The magnitude of the shadowing effect correlates with the symmetry properties and color state of the produced c-cbar pair. It is about twice as large as in DIS, but smaller than for charmonium production. The higher twist shadowing correction related to a nonzero size of the c-cbar pair is not negligible and steeply rises with energy. We predict an appreciable suppression by shadowing for charm production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and a stronger effect at LHC. At the same time, we expect no visible difference between nuclear effects for minimal bias and central collisions, as is suggested by recent data from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. We also demonstrate that at medium high energies when no shadowing is possible, final state interaction may cause a rather strong absorption of heavy flavored hadrons produced at large x_F.

Recent data from RHIC for high-$p_T$ hadrons in gold-gold collisions raised again the long standing problem of quantitatively understanding the Cronin effect, i.e. nuclear enhancement of high-$p_T$ hadrons due to multiple interactions in nuclear matter. In nucleus-nucleus collisions this effect has to be reliably calculated as baseline for a signal of new physics in high-$p_T$ hadron production. The only possibility to test models is to compare with available data for $pA$ collisions, however, all existing models for the Cronin effect rely on a fit to the data to be explained. We develop a phenomenological description based on the light-cone QCD-dipole approach which allows to explain available data without fitting to them and to provide predictions for $pA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC. We point out that the mechanism causing Cronin effect drastically changes between the energies of fixed target experiments and RHIC-LHC. High-$p_T$ hadrons are produced incoherently on different nucleons at low energies, whereas the production amplitudes interfere if the energy is sufficiently high.

This approach is especially suitable for predicting nuclear effects in the DY cross section for heavy ion collisions, as it provides the impact parameter dependence of nuclear shadowing and transverse momentum broadening, quantities that are not available from the standard parton model. For p(D)+A collisions we calculate nuclear shadowing and investigate nuclear modification of the DY transverse momentum distribution at RHIC and LHC for kinematics corresponding to coherence length much longer than the nuclear size. Calculations are performed separately for transversely and longitudinally polarized DY photons, and predictions are presented for the dilepton angular distribution. Furthermore, we calculate nuclear broadening of the mean transverse momentum squared of DY dileptons as function of the nuclear mass number and energy. We also predict nuclear effects for the cross section of the DY process in heavy ion collisions. We found a substantial nuclear shadowing for valence quarks, stronger than for the sea.

So far no theoretical tool for the comprehensive description of exclusive electroproduction of vector mesons off nuclei at medium energies has been developed. We suggest a light-cone QCD formalism which is valid at any energy and incorporates formation effects (color transparency), the coherence length and the gluon shadowing. At medium energies color transparency (CT) and the onset of coherence length (CL) effects are not easily separated. Indeed, although nuclear transparency measured by the HERMES experiment rises with Q^2, it agrees with predictions of the vector dominance model (VDM) without any CT effects. Our new results and observations are: (i) the good agreement with the VDM found earlier is accidental and related to the specific correlation between Q^2 and CL for HERMES kinematics; (ii) CT effects are much larger than have been estimated earlier within the two channel approximation. They are even stronger at low than at high energies and can be easily identified by HERMES or at JLab; (iii) gluon shadowing which is important at high energies is calculated and included; (iv) our parameter-free calculations explain well available data for variation of nuclear transparency with virtuality and energy of the photon; (v) predictions for electroproduction of ρand φare provided for future measurements at HERMES and JLab.

The Born approximation, one photon exchange, used for DIS is subject to virtual radiative corrections which are related to the long-range Coulomb forces. They may be sizeable for heavy nuclei since Zαis not a small parameter. So far these corrections are known only for two processes, elastic scattering and bremsstrahlung on the Coulomb field of a point-like target. While the former amplitude acquires only a phase, in the latter case the cross section is modified also. Although the problem of Coulomb corrections for DIS on nuclei is extremely difficult, it should be challenged rather than 'swept under the carpet'. The importance of these radiative corrections is questioned in present paper. We show that in the simplest case of a constant hadronic current the Coulomb corrections provide a phase to the Born amplitude, therefore the cross section remains the same. Inclusion of more realistic hadronic dynamics changes this conclusion. The example of coherent production of vector mesons off nuclei reveals large effects. So far a little progress has been made deriving exact lepton wave functions in the Coulomb field of an extended target. Employing available results based on the first-order approximation in Zα, we conclude that the Coulomb corrections are still important for heavy nuclei. We also consider an alternative approach for extended nuclear targets, the eikonal approximation, which we demonstrate to reproduce the known exact results for Coulomb corrections. Calculating electroproduction of vector mesons we again arrive at a large deviation from the Born approximation. We conclude that one should accept with caution the experimental results for nuclear effects in DIS based on analyses done in the Born approximation.

In the energy range of RHIC and LHC the mechanisms of nuclear suppression of charmonia are expected to be strikingly different from what is known for the energy of the SPS. One cannot think any more of charmonium produced on a bound nucleon which then attenuates as it passes through the rest of the nucleus. The coherence length of charmonium production substantially exceeds the nuclear radius in the new energy range. Therefore the production amplitudes on different nucleons, rather than the cross sections, add up and interfere, i.e. shadowing is at work. So far no theoretical tool has been available to calculate nuclear effects for charmonium production in this energy regime. We develop a light-cone Green function formalism which incorporates the effects of the coherence of the production amplitudes and of charmonium wave function formation, and is the central result of this paper. We found a substantial deviation from QCD factorization, namely, gluon shadowing is much stronger for charmonium production than it is in DIS. We predict for nuclear effects $x_2$ scaling which is violated at lower energies by initial state energy loss which must be also included in order to compare with available data. In this paper only the indirect J/Psi originating from decay of P-wave charmonia are considered. The calculated x_F-dependence of J/Psi nuclear suppression is in a good accord with data. We predict a dramatic variation of nuclear suppression with x_F in pA and a peculiar peak at x_F=0 in AA collisions at RHIC.

The DY cross section can then be expressed in terms of the same color dipole cross section as DIS. This approach is especially suitable to describe nuclear effects, since it allows to apply Glauber multiple scattering theory. We go beyond the Glauber eikonal approximation by taking into account transitions between interaction eigenstates. We calculate nuclear shadowing at large Feynman-x_F for DY in proton-nucleus collisions, compare to existing data from E772 and make predictions for RHIC. Broadening of the transverse momentum of a parton propagating through a medium is treated using the color dipole formalism, which has the advantage of being a well developed phenomenology in deep-inelastic scattering and soft processes. Within this approach, nuclear broadening should be treated as color filtering, i.e. absorption of large-size dipoles leading to diminishing (enlarged) transverse separation (momentum). We also present a more intuitive derivation based on the classic scattering theory of Molière. This derivation helps to understand the origin of the dipole cross section, part of which comes from attenuation of the quark, while another part is due to multiple interactions of the quark. It also demonstrates that the lowest-order rescattering term provides an A-dependence very different from the generally accepted A^{1/3} behavior. The effect of broadening increases with energy, and we evaluate it using different phenomenological models for the unintegrated gluon density. Although the process is dominated by soft interactions, the phenomenology we use is tested using hadronic cross section data.

The light-cone Green function approach we apply properly treats shadowing in the transition region x_{Bj}>0.01. It also incorporates the nonperturbative effects and is legitimate at small Q^2. We calculate nuclear shadowing and compare with data from the HERMES and NMC experiments. We introduce a nonperturbative interaction for light-cone fluctuations containing quarks and gluons. The $\bar qq$ interaction squeezes the transverse size of these fluctuations in the photon and one does not need to simulate this effect via effective quark masses. The strength of this interaction is fixed by data. Data on diffractive dissociation of hadrons and photons show that the nonperturbative interaction of gluons is much stronger. We fix the parameters for the nonperturbative quark-gluon interaction by data for diffractive dissociation to large masses (triple-Pomeron regime). This allows us to predict nuclear shadowing for gluons which turns out to be not as strong as perturbative QCD predicts. We expect a delayed onset of gluon shadowing at $x \leq 10^{-2}$ shadowing of quarks. Gluon shadowing turns out to be nearly scale invariant up to virtualities $Q^2\sim 4 GeV^2$ due to presence of a semihard scale characterizing the strong nonperturbative interaction of gluons. We use the same concept to improve our description of gluon bremsstrahlung which is related to the distribution function for a quark-gluon fluctuation and the interaction cross section of a $\bar qqG$ fluctuation with a nucleon. We expect the nonperturbative interaction to suppress dramatically the gluon radiation at small transverse momenta compared to perturbative calculations.

We investigate the influence of the effects of quantum coherence on the transverse momentum distribution of photons and gluons radiated by a quark propagating through nuclear matter. We describe the case that the radiation time substantially exceeds the nuclear radius (the relevant case for RHIC and LHC energies), which is different from what is known as Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect corresponding to an infinite medium. We find suppression of the radiation spectrum at small transverse photon/gluon momentum k_T, but enhancement for k_T>1GeV. Any nuclear effects vanish for k_T > 10GeV.
