That work left a lot to be desired, however, both in terms of logical consistency and of numerical efficiency. We have conducted a new search for periodic free-fall orbits, limited to the equal-mass case. Our search produced 24,582 i.c.s of equal-mass periodic orbits with scale-invariant period $T^{*}<80$, corresponding to 12,409 distinct solutions, 236 of which are self-dual.

Large sunspots can be observed with the unaided eye under suitable atmospheric seeing conditions. Such observations are of particular value because the frequency of their appearance provides an approximate indication of the prevailing level of solar activity. Unaided-eye sunspot (UES) observations can be traced back well before the start of telescopic observations of the Sun, especially in the East Asian historical records. It is therefore important to compare more modern, UES observations with the results of telescopic sunspot observations, to gain a better understanding of the nature of the UES records. A previous comparison of Chinese UES records and Greenwich photo-heliographic results between 1874 and 1918 indicated that a few of the UES were apparently not supported by direct photographic evidence of at least one sunspot with a large area. This article reveals that one of the Chinese unaided-eye observations had possibly captured the transit of Venus on 9 December 1874. The Chinese sunspot records on this date are compared with Western sunspot observations on the same day. It is concluded that sunspots on the solar disk were quite small and the transit of Venus was probably misinterpreted as a sunspot by the Chinese local scholars. This case indicates that sunspots or comparable "obscuring" objects with an area as large as 1000 millionths of the solar disk could easily have been seen with the unaided eye under suitable seeing conditions. It also confirms the visibility of sunspots near the solar limb with the unaided eye. This study provides an explanation of the apparent discrepancy between the Chinese UES observation on 9 December 1874 and the Western sunspot observations using telescopes, as well as a basis for further discussion on the negative pairs in 1900 and 1911, apparently without sufficiently large area.

Even for the low-temperature grown Heusler-compound films, the Co-Fe atomic substitution at A and C sites can be confirmed by the conversion electron M"ossbauer spectroscopy measurements. As a result, the magnetic moment and room-temperature spin polarization estimated by nonlocal spin-valve measurements are systematically changed with the Co-Fe substitutions. This study experimentally verified that the Co-Fe substitution in Co_3-xFe_xSi Heusler compounds can directly affect the room-temperature spin polarization.

Using molecular beam epitaxy techniques, we can obtain an artificially controlled arrangement of silicon (Si) or iron (Fe) atoms at the surface on Fe3Si(111). The Si-terminated Fe3Si(111) surface enables us to grow two-dimensional epitaxial Ge films, whereas the Fe-terminated one causes the three-dimensional epitaxial growth of Ge films. The high-quality Ge grown on the Si-terminated surface has almost no strain, meaning that the Ge films are not grown on the low-temperature-grown Si buffer layer but on the lattice matched metallic Fe3Si. This study will open a new way for vertical-type Ge-channel transistors with metallic source/drain contacts.

We examine the case of free-fall three-body problem for the first few digits of symbol sequences, and we examine the case with angular momentum only for the first digit of the symbol sequences. This trial experiments show some new aspects of the planar three-body problem.

We study the change of phase space structure of the rectilinear three-body problem when the mass combination is changed. Generally, periodic orbits bifurcate from the stable Schubart periodic orbit and move radially outward. Among these periodic orbits there are dominant periodic orbits having rotation number (n-2)/n with n <= 3. We find that the number of dominant periodic orbits is two when n is odd and four when n is even. Dominant periodic orbits have large stable regions in and out of the stability region of the Schubart orbit (Schubart region), and so they determine the size of the Schubart region and influence the structure of the Poincare section out of the Schubart region. Indeed, with the movement of the dominant periodic orbits, part of complicated structure of the Poincare section follow these orbits. We find stable periodic orbits which do not bifurcate from the Schubart orbit.

We conducted extensive numerical experiments of equal mass three-body systems until they became disrupted. The system lifetimes, as a bound triple, and the Lyapunov times show a correlation similarto what has been earlier obtained for small bodies in the Solar System. Numerical integrations of several sets of differently randomised initial conditions produced the same relationship of the instability time and Lyapunov time. Marginal probability densities of the various times in the three-body experiments are also discussed. Our high accuracy numerical method for three-body orbit computations and Lyapunov time determinations is concisely described.

Here $(λ,θ)$ and $(Λ,Θ)$ specifies the positions in the shape spheres in the configuration and momentum spaces, $k$ is the virial ratio, $L$ is the total angular momentum, $\dot{I}$ is the time derivative of the moment of inertia, and $ω,φ$, and $ψ$ are the Euler angles to bring the momentum triangle from the nominal position to a given position. This set of variables defines a {\it shape space} of the three-body problem. This is also used as an initial condition space. The initial condition of the so-called free-fall three-body problem is $(λ,θ,k=0,L=0,\dot{I}=0,ω=0)$. We show that the hyper-surface $\dot{I} = 0$ is a global surface of section.

The Haldane-Anderson model is extend to a magnetic impurity, and is analyzed in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Due to the strong hybridization of an impurity d-states with host p-states, it is shown that holes are created in the valence band, at the same time the localized magnetic moments are formed. These holes are weakly bound around the impurity site with the characteristic length of several lattice constants. For the case of the two impurities, it is found that when the separation of two impurities is of the order of the length of holes, the overlap of these holes favors the ferromagnetic interaction. The spatially extended holes play an essential role for the ferromagnetic exchange interaction.

We study the two-impurity Anderson model for a semiconductor host using the quantum Monte Carlo technique. We find that the impurity spins exhibit ferromagnetic correlations with a range which can be much more enhanced than in a half-filled metallic band. In particular, the range is longest when the Fermi level is located above the top of the valence band and decreases as the impurity bound state becomes occupied. Comparisons with the photoemission and optical absorption experiments suggest that this model captures the basic electronic structure of Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs, the prototypical dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS). These numerical results might also be useful for synthesizing DMS or dilute-oxide ferromagnets with higher Curie temperatures.

Solid-state qubits have the potential for the large-scale integration and for the flexibility of layout for quantum computing. However, their short decoherence time due to the coupling to the environment remains an important problem to be overcome. We propose a new superconducting qubit which incorporates a spin-electronic device: the qubit consists of a superconducting ring with a ferromagnetic pi junction which has a metallic contact and a normal Josephson junction with an insulating barrier. Thus, a quantum coherent two-level state is formed without an external magnetic field. This feature and the simple structure of the qubit make it possible to reduce its size leading to a long decoherence time.
