Multi-step reasoning is widely adopted in the community to explore the better performance of language models (LMs). We report on the systematic strategy that LMs use in this process. Our controlled experiments reveal that LMs rely more heavily on heuristics, such as lexical overlap, in the earlier stages of reasoning when more steps are required to reach an answer. Conversely, as LMs progress closer to the final answer, their reliance on heuristics decreases. This suggests that LMs track only a limited number of future steps and dynamically combine heuristic strategies with logical ones in tasks involving multi-step reasoning.

We present a framework for studying transverse knots and symplectic surfaces utilizing the Seiberg-Witten monopole equation. Our primary approach involves investigating an equivariant Seiberg-Witten theory introduced by Baraglia-Hekmati on branched covers, incorporating invariant contact/symplectic structures.
Within this framework, we introduce a novel slice-torus invariant denoted as $q_M(K)$. This invariant can be viewed as the Seiberg-Witten analog of Hendricks-Lipshitz-Sarker's $q_τ$ invariant, with a signature correction term. One property of the invariant $q_M(K)$ is an adjunction equality for properly embedded connected symplectic surfaces in the symplectic filling $D^4\# m \overline{\mathbb{C}P}^2$. The proof of this equality utilizes the equivariant version of the homotopical contact invariant introduced by the authors, leading to a transverse knot invariant. Another ingredient of the proof involves constructing invariant symplectic structures on branched covering spaces branched along properly embedded symplectic surfaces in symplectic fillings. As an application of the invariant $q_M(K)$, we determine the value of any slice-torus invariant within a permissible deviation of $2$ for squeezed knots concordant to certain Montesinos knots. Additionally, we provide an obstruction to realizing second homology classes of $D^4 \#m \overline{\mathbb{C}P}^2$ as connected embedded symplectic surfaces with transverse knot boundary or connected embedded Lagrangian surfaces with collarable Legendrian knot boundary. Moreover, we introduce a new obstruction to certain Montesinos knots being quasipositive, which is described only in terms of slice genera and their signatures.

We introduce a Japanese Morphology dataset, J-UniMorph, developed based on the UniMorph feature schema. This dataset addresses the unique and rich verb forms characteristic of the language's agglutinative nature. J-UniMorph distinguishes itself from the existing Japanese subset of UniMorph, which is automatically extracted from Wiktionary. On average, the Wiktionary Edition features around 12 inflected forms for each word and is primarily dominated by denominal verbs (i.e., [noun] +suru (do-PRS)). Morphologically, this form is equivalent to the verb suru (do). In contrast, J-UniMorph explores a much broader and more frequently used range of verb forms, offering 118 inflected forms for each word on average. It includes honorifics, a range of politeness levels, and other linguistic nuances, emphasizing the distinctive characteristics of the Japanese language. This paper presents detailed statistics and characteristics of J-UniMorph, comparing it with the Wiktionary Edition. We release J-UniMorph and its interactive visualizer publicly available, aiming to support cross-linguistic research and various applications.

We investigate the quintessential inflation in the logarithmic Cartan $F(R)$ gravity. A small logarithmic modification of the general relativity has the potential to introduce both inflation and dark energy. We evaluate the time evolution of the Universe such as inflation, reheating, and dark energy. The parameters in the model are fixed to introduce the inflation and the dark energy scales. We show that the CMB fluctuations induced by the inflation are consistent with the current observations. In the reheating process, it is possible to achieve the reheating temperature required for nucleosynthesis in Big Bang scenario. It can be seen that by choosing an appropriate value for the scalaron field after reheating, the scalaron field again dominates the energy of the Universe and causes the current accelerating expansion as dark energy.

Building on the work of Nozaki, Sato and Taniguchi, we develop an instanton-theoretic invariant aimed at studying strong corks and equivariant bounding. Our construction utilizes the Chern-Simons filtration and is qualitatively different from previous Floer-theoretic methods used to address these questions. As an application, we give an example of a cork whose boundary involution does not extend over any 4-manifold $X$ with $H_1(X, \mathbb{Z}_2) = 0$ and $b_2(X) \leq 1 $, and a strong cork which survives stabilization by either of $n\smash{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ or $n\smash{\overline{\mathbb{CP}}}^2$. We also prove that every nontrivial linear combination of $1/n$-surgeries on the strongly invertible knot $\smash{\overline{9}_{46}}$ constitutes a strong cork. Although Yang-Mills theory has been used to study corks via the Donaldson invariant, this is the first instance where the critical values of the Chern-Simons functional have been utilized to produce such examples. Finally, we discuss the geography question for nonorientable surfaces in the case of extremal normal Euler number.

Purpose: Manual annotations for training deep learning (DL) models in auto-segmentation are time-intensive. This study introduces a hybrid representation-enhanced sampling strategy that integrates both density and diversity criteria within an uncertainty-based Bayesian active learning (BAL) framework to reduce annotation efforts by selecting the most informative training samples. Methods: The experiments are performed on two lower extremity (LE) datasets of MRI and CT images, focusing on the segmentation of the femur, pelvis, sacrum, quadriceps femoris, hamstrings, adductors, sartorius, and iliopsoas, utilizing a U-net-based BAL framework. Our method selects uncertain samples with high density and diversity for manual revision, optimizing for maximal similarity to unlabeled instances and minimal similarity to existing training data. We assess the accuracy and efficiency using Dice and a proposed metric called reduced annotation cost (RAC), respectively. We further evaluate the impact of various acquisition rules on BAL performance and design an ablation study for effectiveness estimation. Results: In MRI and CT datasets, our method was superior or comparable to existing ones, achieving a 0.8\% Dice and 1.0\% RAC increase in CT (statistically significant), and a 0.8\% Dice and 1.1\% RAC increase in MRI (not statistically significant) in volume-wise acquisition. Our ablation study indicates that combining density and diversity criteria enhances the efficiency of BAL in musculoskeletal segmentation compared to using either criterion alone. Conclusion: Our sampling method is proven efficient in reducing annotation costs in image segmentation tasks. The combination of the proposed method and our BAL framework provides a semi-automatic way for efficient annotation of medical image datasets.

We also construct the smallest closed 4-manifold known to support an exotic diffeomorphism. These exotic diffeomorphisms are the Dehn twists along certain Seifert fibered 3-manifolds. As a consequence, we get loops of diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds that topologically extend to some 4-manifolds $X$ but not smoothly so, implying the non-surjectivity of $π_1(\mathrm{Diff}(X)) \to π_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(X))$. Our method uses $2$-parameter families Seiberg-Witten theory over $\mathbb{RP}^2$, while known methods to detect exotic diffeomorphisms used $1$-parameter families gauge-theoretic invariants. Using a similar strategy, we construct a new kind of exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, given as commutators of diffeomorphisms.

The well-known $F(R)$ gravity has been introduced to extend the standard cosmology, e.g. to explain the cosmological accelerated expansion as the inflation. Cartan $F(R)$ gravity is based on the Riemann-Cartan geometry. The curvature $R$ can separate to two parts, one is derived from the Levi-Civita connection and the other from the torsion. Assuming the matter-independent spin connection, we have successfully rewritten the action of Cartan $F(R)$ gravity into the Einstein-Hilbert action and a scalar field with canonical kinetic and potential terms without any conformal transformations. This feature simplifies building and analysis of new model of inflation. In this paper, we study two models, the power-law model and logarithmic model, and evaluate fluctuations in the cosmological microwave background (CMB) radiation. We found the robustness of CMB fluctuation by the analytical computation and confirm this feature by the numerical calculation.

We consider a binary star and a bouncing star as astronomical sources of the gravitational waves and calculate the quadrupole radiation of the scalar and tensor modes.
The scalar mode radiates under spherically symmetric conditions, but the tensor modes do not.
The scalar mode mass is estimated for some typical energy scales. We show a possibility to detect the scalar mode in the future gravitational waves observation.

We introduce a framework for defining concordance invariants of knots using equivariant singular instanton Floer theory with Chern-Simons filtration. It is demonstrated that many of the concordance invariants defined using instantons in recent years can be recovered from our framework. This relationship allows us to compute Kronheimer and Mrowka's $s^\sharp$-invariant and fractional ideal invariants for two-bridge knots, and more. In particular, we prove a quasi-additivity property of $s^\sharp$, answering a question of Gong. We also introduce invariants that are formally similar to the Heegaard Floer $τ$-invariant of Oszváth and Szabó and the $\varepsilon$-invariant of Hom. We provide evidence for a precise relationship between these latter two invariants and the $s^\sharp$-invariant.
Some new topological applications that follow from our techniques are as follows. First, we produce a wide class of patterns whose induced satellite maps on the concordance group have the property that their images have infinite rank, giving a partial answer to a conjecture of Hedden and Pinzón-Caicedo. Second, we produce infinitely many two-bridge knots $K$ which are torsion in the algebraic concordance group and yet have the property that the set of positive $1/n$-surgeries on $K$ is a linearly independent set in the homology cobordism group. Finally, for a knot which is quasi-positive and not slice, we prove that any concordance from the knot admits an irreducible $SU(2)$-representation on the fundamental group of the concordance complement.
While much of the paper focuses on constructions using singular instanton theory with the traceless meridional holonomy condition, we also develop an analogous framework for concordance invariants in the case of arbitrary holonomy parameters, and some applications are given in this setting.

Granger causality has been employed to investigate causality relations between components of stationary multiple time series. We generalize this concept by develo** statistical inference for local Granger causality for multivariate locally stationary processes. Our proposed local Granger causality approach captures time-evolving causality relationships in nonstationary processes. The proposed local Granger causality is well represented in the frequency domain and estimated based on the parametric time-varying spectral density matrix using the local Whittle likelihood. Under regularity conditions, we demonstrate that the estimators converge to multivariate normal in distribution. Additionally, the test statistic for the local Granger causality is shown to be asymptotically distributed as a quadratic form of a multivariate normal distribution. The finite sample performance is confirmed with several simulation studies for multivariate time-varying autoregressive models. For practical demonstration, the proposed local Granger causality method uncovered new functional connectivity relationships between channels in brain signals. Moreover, the method was able to identify structural changes in financial data.

Our main result gives an adjunction inequality for embedded surfaces in certain $4$-manifolds with contact boundary under a non-vanishing assumption on the Bauer--Furuta type invariants. Using this, we give infinitely many knots in $S^3$ that are not smoothly H-slice (that is, bounding a null-homologous disk) in many $4$-manifolds but they are topologically H-slice. In particular, we give such knots in the boundaries of the punctured elliptic surfaces $E(2n)$. In addition, we give obstructions to codimension-0 orientation-reversing embedding of weak symplectic fillings with $b_3=0$ into closed symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_1=0$ and $b_2^+\equiv 3$ mod $4$. From here we prove a Bennequin type inequality for symplectic caps of $(S^3,ξ_{std})$. We also show that any weakly symplectically fillable $3$-manifold bounds a $4$-manifold with at least two smooth structures.

In the superconducting state, an anti-crossing gap opens between the outer- and inner-BQP bands, which we attribute primarily to interlayer single-particle hop** with possible contributions from interlayer Cooper pairing. We find that the $d$-wave superconducting gap of both BQP bands smoothly develops with momentum without abrupt jump in contrast to a previous ARPES study. Hybridization between the BQPs also gradually increases in going from the off-nodal to the anti-nodal region, which is explained by the momentum-dependence of the interlayer single-particle hop**. As possible mechanisms for the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, the hybridization between the BQPs, as well as the combination of phonon modes of the triple CuO$_2$ layers and spin fluctuations are discussed.

We give constraints on smooth families of 4-manifolds with boundary using Manolescu's Seiberg-Witten Floer stable homotopy type, provided that the fiberwise restrictions of the families to the boundaries are trivial families of 3-manifolds. As an application, we show that, for a simply-connected oriented compact smooth 4-manifold $X$ with boundary with an assumption on the Frøyshov invariant or the Manolescu invariants $α, β, γ$ of $\partial X$, the inclusion map $\mathrm{Diff}(X,\partial) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X,\partial)$ between the groups of diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms which fix the boundary pointwise is not a weak homotopy equivalence. This combined with a classical result in dimension 3 implies that the inclusion map $\mathrm{Diff}(X) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X)$ is also not a weak homotopy equivalence under the same assumption on $\partial X$. Our constraints generalize both of constraints on smooth families of closed 4-manifolds proven by Baraglia and a Donaldson-type theorem for smooth 4-manifolds with boundary originally due to Frøyshov.

In this paper, stochastic channel models for massive MIMO (M-MIMO) and extreme large MIMO (XL- MIMO) system applications are described, evaluated and systematically compared. This work aims to cover new aspects of massive MIMO stochastic channel models in a comprehensive and systematic way. For that, we compare different models, presenting graphically and intuitively the behavior of each model. Each massive MIMO channel model emulates the environment using different methodologies and properties. Using metrics such as capacity, SINR, singular values decomposition (SVD), and condition number, one can understand the influence of each characteristic on the modelling and how it differentiates from other models. Moreover, in new XL-MIMO scenarios, where the near-field and visible region (VR) effects arise, our finding demonstrate that for the two assumed schemes of clusters distribution, the clusters location influences the performance of the conjugate beamforming and zero-forcing (ZF) precoding due to the correlation effect, which have been analysed from the geometric massive MIMO channel models.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the visibility and artifacts of commercially available fiducial markers in order to optimize their selection for image-guided stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). From six different vendors, we selected 11 fiducials commonly used in image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT); the fiducials varied in material composition (gold, platinum, carbon), shape (cylindrical, notched/linear, coiled, ball-like, step), and size measured in terms of diameter (0.28-1.0 mm) and length (3.0-20.0 mm). Each fiducial was centered in 4-mm bolus within a 13-cm-thick water-equivalent phantom. Fiducials were imaged with use of a simulation computed tomography (CT) scanner, a CT-on-rails system, and an onboard cone-beam CT system. Acquisition parameters were set according to clinical protocols. Visibility was assessed in terms of contrast and the Michelson visibility metric. Artifacts were quantified in terms of relative standard deviation and relative streak artifacts level (rSAL). Twelve radiation oncologists ranked each fiducial in terms of clinical usefulness. Contrast and artifacts increased with fiducial size. For CT imaging, maximum contrast (2722 HU) and artifacts (rSAL=2.69) occurred for the largest-diameter (0.75 mm) platinum fiducial. Minimum contrast (551 HU) and reduced artifacts (rSAL=0.65) were observed for the smallest-diameter (0.28 mm) gold fiducial. Carbon produced the least severe artifacts (rSAL = 0.29). The survey indicated that physicians preferred gold fiducials with a 0.35- to 0.43-mm diameter, 5- to 10-mm length, and a coiled or cylindrical shape that balanced contrast and artifacts. We evaluated 11 different fiducials in terms of visibility and artifacts. The results of this study may assist radiation oncologists who seek to maximize contrast, minimize artifacts, and/or balance contrast versus artifacts by fiducial selection.

Quantum computing is a unique computational approach that promises tremendous performance that cannot be achieved by classical computers, although several problems must be resolved to realize a practical quantum computing system for easy use. Here, we propose a new system and theory for quantum computing that employs single molecule confinement between electrodes. The striking features of this system are (i) an individual molecule that exhibits quantum tunneling can be regarded as a sequence of quantum gates, (ii) the quantum tunneling can be encoded onto an array of quantum bits and observed without the contraction of superposition states, and (iii) quantum computing by quantum tunneling can be performed at room temperature. An adenine molecule is adopted as the single molecule between electrodes, and conductance data are encoded onto quantum states including entangled states, depending on the conductance values. As an application of the new quantum system, molecule identification based on quantum computing by quantum tunneling is demonstrated.

This result is false in the topological category. The proof uses a quantitative formulation of instanton Floer homology. Using similar techniques, we also obtain similar results about codimension-$1$ embeddings of homology $3$-spheres into closed definite $4$-manifolds and a fixed point type theorem for instanton Floer homology.

Spectral converters are known to increase photovoltaic energy conversion by minimizing losses due to fundamental non-absorption and thermalization processes, and have been suggested to surpass the Shockley-Queisser efficiency limit in single junction solar cells. Here we present a detailed spectroscopic study of photoluminescence in tellurite-tungstate glasses doped and codoped with $Pr^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$ and $Ag$ nanoparticles. The energy transfer mechanisms between $Pr^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ are discussed based on the near infrared emission under excitation at $442$ nm and on the upconversion emission under excitation at $980$ nm. Fluorescence quenching of $^2 F_{5/2}$ level of $Yb^{3+}$ is observed by increasing the concentration of $Pr^{3+}$, as well as by the addition of $Ag$ nanoparticles. In addition, a discussion on the potential of this glass to increase energy production in spectral converters is presented. The results suggest that the few undesirable energy transfer processes occurring in this material are difficult to be controlled or eliminated properly, resulting in intrinsic losses. This discussion is extended to the potential of glass science to enhance energy production in solar cells, showing that newer designs such as bifacial cells may facilitate the exploration of glasses other than soda-lime for mass production of solar cells. The focus on extending the lifespan by reducing UV induced degradation seems to be a more effective approach than the development of spectral converters for Si solar cells.

The values $\{r_s(Y)\}$ are included in the critical values of the $SU(2)$-Chern-Simons functional of $Y$, and we show a negative definite cobordism inequality and a connected sum formula for $r_s$. As applications, we obtain several new results on the homology cobordism group. First, we give infinitely many homology 3-spheres which cannot bound any definite 4-manifold. Next, we show that if the 1-surgery of $S^3$ along a knot has the Frøyshov invariant negative, then all positive $1/n$-surgeries along the knot are linearly independent in the homology cobordism group. In another direction, we use $\{r_s\}$ to define a filtration on the homology cobordism group which is parametrized by $[0,\infty]$. Moreover, we compute an approximate value of $r_s$ for the hyperbolic 3-manifold obtained by $1/2$-surgery along the mirror of the knot $5_2$.

Emerging technologies are demanding innovative properties of glasses. In this work, Cerium Oxide is used as a dopant in Zinc-Tellurite samples and its effects on the properties of the glass are investigated. Thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous nature of all samples. The bivalent nature of Cerium is investigated spectroscopically and a strong redshift induced by the dopant is attributed to charge transfers O$^{2-}{\rightarrow}$Ce$^{4+}$, while the 4f-5d transition of Ce$^{3+}$ could not be identified in absorption or luminescence measurements. Yellow/red (570/650 nm) emission under 405/450 nm pum** were observed and are originated from Te$^{4+}$ ions, which absorbs light in the UV/blue region of the spectrum. The incorporation of some Cerium Oxide enhanced the visible luminescence, though we found no evidence that Cerium ions play some role in the radiative process. The luminescence is enhanced though due changes in the glass network induced by the dopant.

The emergence of quantization at the nanoscale, the quantum size effect (QSE), allows flexible control of matter and is a rich source of advanced functionalities. A QSE-induced transition into an insulating phase in semimetallic nanofilms was predicted for bismuth a half-century ago and has regained new interest with regard to its surface states exhibiting nontrivial electronic topology. Here, we reveal an unexpected mechanism of the transition by high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations. Anomalous evolution and degeneracy of quantized energy levels indicate that increased Coulomb repulsion from the surface states deforms a quantum confinement potential with decreasing thickness. The potential deformation drastically modulates spatial distributions of quantized wave functions, which leads to acceleration of the transition even beyond the original QSE picture. This discovery establishes a complete picture of the long-discussed problem in bismuth and highlights the new class of size effects dominating nanoscale transport in systems with metallic surface states.

Since its inception six decades ago, astrobiology has diversified immensely to encompass several scientific questions including the origin and evolution of Terran life, the organic chemical composition of extraterrestrial objects, and the concept of habitability, among others. The detection of life beyond Earth forms the main goal of astrobiology, and a significant one for space exploration in general. This goal has galvanized and connected with other critical areas of investigation such as the analysis of meteorites and early Earth geological and biological systems, materials gathered by sample-return space missions, laboratory and computer simulations of extraterrestrial and early Earth environmental chemistry, astronomical remote sensing, and in-situ space exploration missions. Lately, scattered efforts are being undertaken towards the R&D of the novel and as-yet-space-unproven life-detection technologies capable of obtaining unambiguous evidence of extraterrestrial life, even if it is significantly different from Terran life. As the suite of space-proven payloads improves in breadth and sensitivity, this is an apt time to examine the progress and future of life-detection technologies.

The electronic structure above the Fermi level has been successfully observed, and a massive-and-anisotropic Dirac-type dispersions are confirmed; more importantly, we directly observe that the photo-carriers generated across the direct band gap have the life time exceeding 400 ps. Here, we discuss the effects of Silver nitrate addition 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% mol%) into a Pr3+ doped tellurite-tungstate glasses (TWNN) formed by the conventional melt-quenching technique. The XRD curves confirmed the amorphous structural nature of TWNN glasses. The FTIR spectra identified the presence of different vibrational groups. DSC curves verified the increase around 70 oC for thermal stability with silver addition. Absorption spectra observed surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band around 500 nm. Luminescence measures shows enhanced and quenching for Pr3+ transitions under the 473 nm excitation. The band around 480-520 nm are more affected by SPR band by quenching, and the bands around 575-675 nm are luminescence emission increased due to the presence of silver nanoparticles. In addition, lifetime decays as a function of heat treatment time, has also been verified. The Ag enhances the lifetime regarding the samples annealed by 20 hours and as the Ag concentration increases, the lifetime stretches as well. The present results shows that Pr3+-Ag codoped TWNN glass lead to some remarkable improvement, verified in properties such as lifetime constants or emissions intensities and is a promising candidate for photonic devices.

Alkali-metal adsorption on the surface of materials is widely used for in situ surface electron do**, particularly for observing unoccupied band structures by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). However, the effects of alkali-metal atoms on the resulting band structures have yet to be fully investigated, owing to difficulties in both experiments and calculations. Here, we combine ARPES measurements on cesium-adsorbed ultrathin bismuth films with first-principles calculations of the electronic charge densities and demonstrate a simple method to evaluate alkali-metal induced band deformation. We reveal that deformation of bismuth surface bands is directly correlated with vertical charge-density profiles at each electronic state of bismuth. In contrast, a change in the quantized bulk bands is well described by a conventional rigid-band-shift picture. We discuss these two aspects of the band deformation holistically, considering spatial distributions of the electronic states and cesium-bismuth hybridization, and provide a prescription for applying alkali-metal adsorption to a wide range of materials.

Instantons for 4-manifolds with periodic ends and an obstruction to embeddings of 3-manifolds

Abstract:
We construct an obstruction for the existence of embeddings of homology $3$-sphere into homology $S^3\times S^1$ under some cohomological condition. The obstruction is defined as an element in the filtered version of the instanton Floer cohomology due to R.Fintushel-R.Stern. We make use of the $\mathbb{Z}$-fold covering space of homology $S^3\times S^1$ and the instantons on it.

One of the ultimate goals of the study of iron-based superconductors is to identify the common feature that produces the high critical temperature (Tc). In the early days, based on a weak-coupling viewpoint, the nesting between hole- and electron-like Fermi surfaces (FSs) leading to the so-called $s\pm$ state was considered to be one such key feature. However, this theory has faced a serious challenge ever since the discovery of alkali-metal-doped FeSe (AFS) superconductors, in which only electron-like FSs with a nodeless superconducting gap are observed. Several theories have been proposed, but a consistent understanding is yet to be achieved. Here we show experimentally that a hole-like band exists in KxFe2-ySe2, which presumably forms a hole-like Fermi surface. The present study suggests that AFS can be categorized in the same group as iron arsenides with both hole- and electron-like FSs present. This result provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.

The topology of pure Bi is controversial because of its very small ($\sim$10 meV) band gap. Here we perform high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements systematically on 14$-$202 bilayers Bi films. Using high-quality films, we succeed in observing quantized bulk bands with energy separations down to $\sim$10 meV. Detailed analyses on the phase shift of the confined wave functions precisely determine the surface and bulk electronic structures, which unambiguously show nontrivial topology. The present results not only prove the fundamental property of Bi but also introduce a capability of the quantum-confinement approach.

Two-dimensional (2D) metallic states formed on the ZnO(10$\bar{1}$0) surface by hydrogen adsorption have been investigated using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The observed metallic state is characterized by a peak-dip-hump structure at just below the Fermi level and a long tail structure extending up to 600 meV in binding energy. The peak and hump positions are separated by about 70 meV, a value close to the excitation energy of longitudinal optical (LO) phonons. Spectral functions formulated on the basis of the 2D electron-phonon coupling well reproduce the ARPES intensity distribution of the metallic states. This spectral analysis suggests that the 2D electrons accumulated on the ZnO surface couple to the LO phonons and that this coupling is the origin of the anomalous long tail. Our results indicate that the 2D electrons at the ZnO surface are described as the electron liquid model.

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the nodal quasi-particle spectra of the high-Tc cuprate tri-layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d (Tc~ 110 K). The spectral weight Z of the nodal quasi-particle increases with decreasing temperature across the Tc. Such a temperature dependence is qualitatively similar to that of the coherence peak intensity in the anti nodal region of various high-Tc cuprates although the nodal spectral weight remains finite and large above Tc. We attribute this observation to the reduction of electron correlation strength in going from the normal metallic state to the superconducting state, a characteristic behavior of a superconductor with strong electron correlation.

Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter. Their surfaces and interfaces act as a topological boundary to generate massless Dirac fermions with spin-helical textures. Investigation of fermion dynamics near the Dirac point is crucial for the future development of spintronic devices incorporating topological insulators. However, research so far has been unsatisfactory because of a substantial overlap with the bulk valence band and a lack of a completely unoccupied Dirac point (DP). Here, we explore the surface Dirac fermion dynamics in the TI Sb$_2$Te$_3$ by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES). Sb$_2$Te$_3$ has a DP located completely above the Fermi energy ($E_F$) with an in-gap DP. The excited electrons in the upper Dirac cone stay longer than those below the Dirac point to form an inverted population. This was attributed to a reduced density of states (DOS) near the DP .

In the rectangular Fermi pockets around X point, the straight portion parallel to the $k_y$ direction is dominated by Bi $6p_x$ character. The orbital polarization indicates the underlying quasi-one-dimensional electronic structure of the BiS$_2$ system. Moreover, distortions on tetragonally aligned Bi could give rise to the band Jahn-Teller effect.

We have performed the photoemission and inverse photoemission experiments to elucidate the origin of Mott insulating states in A-site ordered perovskite CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ (CCTO). Experimental results have revealed that Cu 3$d$-O 2$p$ hybridized bands, which are located around the Fermi level in the prediction of the local-density approximation (LDA) band calculations, are actually separated into the upper Hubbard band at $\sim$ 1.5 eV and the lower Hubbard band at $\sim$ $-$1.7 eV with a band gap of $\sim$ 1.5-1.8 eV. We also observed that Cu 3$d$ peak at $\sim$ $-$3.8 eV and Ti 3$d$ peak at $\sim$ 3.8 eV are further away from each other than as indicated in the LDA calculations. In addition, it is found that the multiplet strucutre around $-$9 eV includes a considerable number of O 2$p$ states. These observations indicate that the Cu 3$d$ and Ti 3$d$ electrons hybridized with the O 2$p$ states are strongly correlated, which originates in the Mott-insulating states of CCTO.

In the hole-doped cuprates, a small amount of carriers suppresses antiferromagnetism and induces superconductivity. In the electron-doped cuprates, on the other hand, superconductivity appears only in a narrow range of high electron concentration ($\sim$ doped Ce content) after reduction annealing, and strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlation persists in the superconducting phase. Recently, Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) bulk single crystals annealed by a "protect annealing" method showed a high $T_c$ of $\sim$ 27 K for small Ce content down to $x \sim 0.05$. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of PLCCO crystals, we observed a sharp quasi-particle peak on the entire Fermi surface without signature of an AFM pseudogap unlike all the previous work, indicating a dramatic reduction of AFM correlation length and/or of magnetic moments. The superconducting state was found to extend over a wide electron concentration range. The present ARPES results fundamentally change the long-standing picture on the electronic structure in the electron-doped regime.
