We propose and verify a method for controlling the frequency dependence of the group delay of electromagnetic waves over a broad frequency range using the Brewster effect in single-layer metamaterials with finite thickness, here referred to as metafilms. When the metafilm's reflectance vanishes regardless of the incident frequency, the group delay can be large near its resonance frequency while maintaining the transmittance close to unity regardless of the incident frequency. Furthermore, when several reflectionless metafilms are stacked together, the total group delay should be given as the sum of the individual group delays. In this study, we realize reflectionless metafilms by arranging the meta-atoms so that the Brewster effect occurs regardless of the incident frequency. We evaluate in numerical simulations and experiments the frequency dependence of the transmittance and of the group delay of a three-layer metamaterial composed of reflectionless metafilms with different resonance frequencies, and find that the total transmittance and group delay of this metamaterial agree respectively with the product of the transmittances and the sum of the group delays of the constituent metafilms.

To realize efficient nonlinear metamaterials, we investigate a method for enhancing the local electric field in a metamolecule composed of two radiatively coupled cut-wire resonators where resonance of the cut-wire resonators and low-group-velocity propagation of an incident electromagnetic wave simultaneously occur. Numerical analysis shows that the local electric field in the metamolecule can be enhanced by decreasing the electrode size and the gap of the capacitor structure of the cut-wire resonators while kee** the equivalent electrical circuit parameters of the metamolecule constant. We measure and compare the threshold incident power for a gas discharge in the metamolecule fabricated in our previous study and that in the metamolecule with shrunken capacitor structures. The experiment reveals that shrinking the capacitor structure while kee** the resonance frequency of the metamolecule decreases the threshold incident power for a gas discharge and may increase the gas pressure where the threshold incident power is minimum. Further development of this work will enable us to realize efficient nonlinear metamaterials that have atmospheric-pressure gas as a nonlinear element.

We evaluate the transient response of an optically tunable meta-atom composed of an electric inductor-capacitor resonator that is loaded with a piece of high-resistivity silicon and perform a proof-of-concept experiment to demonstrate the storage and release of electromagnetic waves using this meta-atom in the microwave region. The transient time of the meta-atom immediately after commencing laser light illumination of the silicon in the meta-atom is found to be inversely proportional to the incident laser power. The transmittance of the meta-atom at the resonance frequency increases to ten times that obtained without laser illumination at 5.2 ns after the start of laser illumination for a laser power of 1600 mW, a laser spot size of 2 mm $\times$ 1 mm, and a laser wavelength of 447 nm. In contrast, the transient time after turning the laser light off is dependent on the carrier lifetime of silicon and is measured to be several tens of microseconds. Based on the results of evaluation of the transient response of the meta-atom, we propose a method for the storage and release of electromagnetic waves using a Fabry-Perot resonator that includes the meta-atom as one of its mirrors. The electromagnetic wave that is stored in the Fabry-Perot resonator for a few tens of nanoseconds is then successfully released by illuminating the silicon in the meta-atom with the laser light. It is also possible to use this method in the higher frequency region because metamaterials with semiconductor elements can even be used as active metamaterials in the optical region as long as their bandgap energy is higher than the signal photon energy.

We develop a method to control the group delay of electromagnetic waves continuously using a doubly resonant metasurface. The method is based on the dependences of i) the group velocity in a medium featuring two resonance lines on the resonance linewidths and ii) the resonance linewidth of a metasurface composed of split-ring resonators on an incidence angle of electromagnetic wave. To verify this method for group-delay control, we design a terahertz metasurface composed of two split-ring resonators with different resonance frequencies and numerically analyze the transmission characteristic of the metasurface. Double resonance lines are observed for oblique incidence and the resonance transmission dips become deeper and broader with increasing the incidence angle. The group delay at around the center frequency of the double resonance lines is found to vary in the range about from 0s to 20 times the period of the incident wave with the incidence angle. In contrast with a previously reported method for variable control of group delay using electromagnetically-induced-transparency-like metamaterials, a high transmittance is achieved for a small group delay condition.

Local electromagnetic field enhancement in resonant metamaterials is useful for efficient generation of nonlinear phenomena; however, the field enhancement is suppressed by losses of nonlinear elements in metamaterials. For overcoming this issue, we investigate the nonlinear response of an electromagnetically induced transparency like metasurface loaded with gas as the nonlinear element. To induce nonlinearity in the gas associated with discharges, an electromagnetic wave with a modulated amplitude is incident on the metasurface. The measured waveform and spectrum of the transmitted electromagnetic wave, along with light emission from the discharge microplasma, reveal that frequency mixing can occur on the metasurface. The parameter dependence of the conversion efficiency of the frequency mixing phenomenon shows that the efficiency is determined almost entirely by the ratio of the duration of microplasma generation to the modulation period of the incident wave amplitude. This result implies that the frequency mixing is derived from a binary change in the transmittance of the metasurface caused by the generation and quenching of the microplasma.

Microplasma generation using microwaves in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like metasurface composed of two types of radiatively coupled cut-wire resonators with slightly different resonance frequencies is investigated. Microplasma is generated in either of the gaps of the cut-wire resonators as a result of strong enhancement of the local electric field associated with resonance and slow microwave effect. The threshold microwave power for plasma ignition is found to reach a minimum at the EIT-like transmission peak frequency, where the group index is maximized. A pump-probe measurement of the metasurface reveals that the transmission properties can be significantly varied by varying the properties of the generated microplasma near the EIT-like transmission peak frequency and the resonance frequency. The electron density of the microplasma is roughly estimated to be of order $1\times 10^{10}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ for a pump power of $15.8\,\mathrm{W}$ by comparing the measured transmission spectrum for the probe wave with the numerically calculated spectrum. In the calculation, we assumed that the plasma is uniformly generated in the resonator gap, that the electron temperature is $2\,\mathrm{eV}$, and that the elastic scattering cross section is $20 \times 10^{-16}\,\mathrm{cm}^2$.

The numerical analysis demonstrates that the reflectance of the metafilm vanishes independent of the frequency and that the metafilm behaves like an all-pass filter (with finite loss). An analysis based on an electrical circuit model of the reflectionless metafilm reveals that the energy of the suppressed reflection wave is not stored in the metafilm but is radiated to the transmission direction.

We realize a suppression of an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) like transmission in a metasurface induced by a local electric field that is strongly enhanced based on two approaches: squeezing of electromagnetic energy in resonant metasurfaces and enhancement of electromagnetic energy density associated with a low group velocity. The EIT-like metasurface consists of a pair of radiatively coupled cut-wire resonators, and it can effect both field enhancement approaches simultaneously. The strongly enhanced local electric field generates an air discharge plasma at either of the gaps of the cut-wire resonators, which causes the EIT-like metasurface to change into two kinds of Lorentz type metasurfaces.

The unit cell of the metamaterial consists of two coupled split-ring resonators with identical dimensions. A theoretical analysis based on an electrical circuit model of the coupled split-ring resonators indicates that the linear-to-circular polarization converter is achieved when the magnetic coupling between the split-ring resonators is set to a certain strength. A finite-difference time-domain simulation reveals that the single-layered metamaterial behaves as the linear-to-circular polarization converter and that the polarization converter has the combined characteristics of a half mirror and a quarter-wave plate.

We theoretically and numerically investigate metamaterials composed of coupled resonators with indirect coupling. First, we theoretically analyze a mechanical model of coupled resonators with indirect coupling. The theoretical analysis shows that an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like phenomenon with a transparency bandwidth narrower than the resonance linewidths of the constitutive resonators can occur in the metamaterial with strong indirect coupling. We then numerically examine the characteristics of the metamaterial composed of coupled cut-wire pairs using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The FDTD simulation confirms that an EIT-like transparency phenomenon occurs in the metamaterial owing to indirect coupling. Finally, we compare the results of the theoretical and numerical analyses. The behavior of the EIT-like metamaterial is found to be well described by the mechanical model of the coupled resonators.
