The radioisotope Th-229 is renowned for its extraordinarily low-energy, long-lived nuclear first-excited state. This isomeric state can be excited by VUV lasers and the transition from the ground state has been proposed as a reference transition for ultra-precise nuclear clocks. Such nuclear clocks will find multiple applications, ranging from fundamental physics studies to practical implementations. Recent investigations extracted valuable constraints on the nuclear transition energy and lifetime, populating the isomer in stochastic nuclear decay of U-233 or Ac-229.
However, to assess the feasibility and performance of the (solid-state) nuclear clock concept, time-controlled excitation and depopulation of the $^{229}$Th isomer together with time-resolved monitoring of the radiative decay are imperative.
Here we report the population of the $^{229}$Th isomeric state through resonant X-ray pum** and detection of the radiative decay in a VUV transparent $^{229}$Th-doped CaF$_2$ crystal. The decay half-life is measured to $447\pm 25$ s, with a transition wavelength of $148.18 \pm 0.42$ nm and a radiative decay fraction consistent with unity. Furthermore, we report a new ``X-ray quenching'' effect which allows to de-populate the isomer on demand and effectively reduce the half-life by at least a factor 50. Such controlled quenching can be used to significantly speed up the interrogation cycle in future nuclear clock schemes.
Our results show that full control over the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer population can be achieved in a crystal environment. In particular, non-radiative decay processes that might lead to a broadening of the isomer transition linewidth are negligible, paving the way for the development of a compact and robust solid-state nuclear clock. Further studies are needed to reveal the underlying physical mechanism of the X-ray quenching effect.

The Ir $4f$ spectra exhibit distinct changes between the AFM and paramagnetic (PM) phases, with the spectral difference $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ showing a contrasting behavior in the two compounds. By employing computational simulations using the local-density approximation combined with the dynamical mean-field theory method, we elucidate that $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ primary reflects the Slater or Mott-Hubbard character of the AFM insulating state rather than material specific details. This sensitivity to fine low-energy electronic structure arises from the dependence of charge-transfer responses to the sudden creation of a localized core hole on both metal-insulator transitions and long-range AFM ordering. Our result broadens the applications of core-level HAXPES as a tool for characterization of electronic structure.

Ultrafast stimuli can stabilize metastable states of matter inaccessible by equilibrium means. Establishing the spatiotemporal link between ultrafast excitation and metastability is crucial to understanding these phenomena. Here, we use single-shot optical-pump, X-ray-probe measurements to provide snapshots of the emergence of a persistent polar vortex supercrystal in a heterostructure that hosts a fine balance between built-in electrostatic and elastic frustrations by design. By perturbing this balance with photoinduced charges, a starting heterogenous mixture of polar phases disorders within a few picoseconds, resulting in a soup state composed of disordered ferroelectric and suppressed vortex orders. On the pico-to-nanosecond timescales, transient labyrinthine fluctuations form in this soup along with a recovering vortex order. On longer timescales, these fluctuations are progressively quenched by dynamical strain modulations, which drive the collective emergence of a single supercrystal phase. Our results, corroborated by dynamical phase-field modeling, reveal how ultrafast excitation of designer systems generates pathways for persistent metastability.

We report the ground-state symmetry of the Ce $4f$ states in the heavy fermion superconductor CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, yielding anisotropic $cf$-hybridization between the Ce $4f$ states and conducting electrons. By analyzing linear dichroism in soft x-ray absorption and core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectra, the $4f$ symmetry is determined as $Σ$-type $Γ_{7}$, promoting predominant hybridization with the conducting electrons originating from the Ge site. The band structures probed by the soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission indicates that the Ge $4p$ components contribute to the band renormalization through the anisotropic hybridization effects, suggesting that the control of the electronic structures of Ge orbital gives an impact to achieve the exotic phenomena in CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$.

In this study, we investigate the bulk electronic structure of Pb-substituted LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals, using two types of hard-x-ray spectroscopy. High-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a spectral change at low temperatures. Using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we find that the temperature-induced change originates from a structural phase transition, similar to the pressure-induced transition in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. This finding suggests that the mechanism of bulk superconductivity induced by Pb substitution is the same as that under high pressure. Furthermore, a novel low-valence state with a mixture of divalent and trivalent Bi ions is discovered using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with the aid of DFT calculations.

Optical control of crystal structures is a promising route to change physical properties including topological nature of a targeting material. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction measurements using the X-ray free-electron laser are performed to study the ultrafast lattice dynamics of VTe$_2$, which shows a unique charge-density-wave (CDW) ordering coupled to the topological surface states as a first-order phase transition. A significant oscillation of the CDW amplitude mode is observed at a superlattice reflection as well as Bragg reflections. The frequency of the oscillation is independent of the fluence of the pum** laser, which is prominent to the CDW ordering of the first-order phase transition. Furthermore, the timescale of the photoinduced 1$T^{\prime\prime}$ to 1$T$ phase transition is independent of the period of the CDW amplitude mode.

No evidence of structural phase transition is found by x-ray diffraction below $T^\ast \sim 90$ K, while results obtained from resistivity measurement and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy clearly show the appearance of a nematic state. These results indicate formation of a pure nematic state in the iron-based superconductor and provide conclusive evidence that the nematic state originates from the electronic degrees of freedom. This pure nematicity in the thin film implies difference in the electron-lattice interaction from bulk FeSe crystals. FeSe films provide valuable playgrounds for observing the pure response of "bare" electron systems free from the electron-lattice interaction, and should make important contribution to investigate nematicity and its relationship with superconductivity.

Quantum electronic matter has long been understood in terms of two limiting behaviors of electrons: one of delocalized metallic states, and the other of localized magnetic states. Understanding the strange metallic behavior which develops at the brink of localization demands new probes of the underlying electronic charge dynamics. Using a state-of-the-art technique, synchrotron-radiation-based Mossbauer spectroscopy, we have studied the longitudinal charge fluctuations of the strange metal phase of beta-YbAlB4 as a function of temperature and pressure. We find that the usual single absorption peak in the Fermi-liquid regime splits into two peaks upon entering the critical regime. This spectrum is naturally interpreted as a single nuclear transition, modulated by nearby electronic valence fluctuations whose long time-scales are further enhanced, due to the formation of charged polarons. Our results represent a direct observation of critical charge fluctuations as a new signature of strange metals.

The normal state of high-Tc cuprates has been considered one of the essential topics in high-temperature superconductivity research. However, compared to the high magnetic fields study of it, understanding a photoinduced normal state remains elusive. Here, we explore a photoinduced normal state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ (YBCO) through a charge density wave (CDW) with time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering, as well as a high-magnetic field x-ray scattering. In the non-equilibrium state in which people predict a quenched superconducting state based on the previous optical spectroscopies, we experimentally observed a similar analogy to the competition between superconductivity and CDW shown in the equilibrium state. We further observe that the broken pairing states in the superconducting CuO$_2$ plane via the optical pump lead to nucleation of three-dimensional CDW precursor correlation, revealing that the photoinduced CDW is similar to phenomena shown under magnetic fields. Ultimately, these findings provide a critical clue that the characteristics of the photoinduced normal state show a solid resemblance to those under magnetic fields in equilibrium conditions.

The weak Coulomb screening in the core-hole atoms results in decreased absorption at photon energies immediately above the absorption edge. By employing this phenomenon, referred to as saturable absorption, we successfully reduce the duration of x-ray free-electron laser pulses (photon energy: 9.000 keV, duration: 6-7 fs, fluence: 2.0-3.5$\times$10$^5$ J/cm$^2$) by $\sim$35%. The diffractometer uses a reference silicon single crystal plate and a highly accurate angle encoder called SelfA. We evaluate the performance of the system by repeatedly measuring the energy of the first excited state of the potassium-40 nuclide. The excitation energy is determined as 29829.39(6) eV. We report the observation of a novel nonlinear effect in the hard x-ray range. Upon illuminating Fe and Cu metal foils with intense x-ray pulses tuned near their respective K edges, photons at nearly twice the incoming photon energy are emitted. The signal rises quadratically with the incoming intensity, consistent with two-photon excitation. The spectrum of emitted high-energy photons comprises multiple Raman lines that disperse with the incident photon energy. Upon reaching the double K-shell ionization threshold, the signal strength undergoes a marked rise. Above this threshold, the lines cease dispersing, turning into orescence lines with energies much greater than obtainable by single electron transitions, and additional Raman lines appear. We attribute these processes to electron-correlation mediated multielectron transitions involving double-core hole excitation and various two-electron de-excitation processes to a final state involving one or more L and M core-holes.

We present the first experimental demonstration of quantum-enhanced detection at x-ray wavelengths. We show that x-ray pairs that are generated by spontaneous down-conversion can be used for the generation of heralded x-ray photons and measure directly the sub-Poissonian statistics of the single photons by using photon number resolving detectors. We utilize the properties of the strong time-energy correlations of the down converted photons to demonstrate the ability to improve the visibility and the signal-to-noise ratio of an image with a small number of photons in an environment with a noise level that is higher than the signal by many orders of magnitude. In our work we demonstrate a new protocol for the measurement of quantum effects with x-rays using advantages such as background free measurements that the x-ray regime offers for experiments aiming at testing fundamental concepts in quantum optics.

This so-called isomer is accessible by VUV lasers, which allows transferring the amazing precision of atomic laser spectroscopy to nuclear physics. Being able to manipulate the Th-229 nuclear states at will opens up a multitude of prospects, from studies of the fundamental interactions in physics to applications as a compact and robust nuclear clock. However, direct optical excitation of the isomer or its radiative decay back to the ground state has not yet been observed, and a series of key nuclear structure parameters such as the exact energies and half-lives of the low-lying nuclear levels of Th-229 are yet unknown. Here we present the first active optical pum** into Th-229m. Our scheme employs narrow-band 29 keV synchrotron radiation to resonantly excite the second excited state, which then predominantly decays into the isomer. We determine the resonance energy with 0.07 eV accuracy, measure a half-life of 82.2 ps, an excitation linewidth of 1.70 neV, and extract the branching ratio of the second excited state into the ground and isomeric state respectively. These measurements allow us to re-evaluate gamma spectroscopy data that have been collected over 40~years.

The resonant ALPs' mass of the conversion is scanned by varying the X-ray injection angle to the crystal. No significant signals are observed, and 90% C. L. upper limits on the ALP-two photon coupling constant are obtained as follows, g_{aγγ} < 4.2 \times 10^{-3} GeV^{-1} (m_a < 10 eV), g_{aγγ} < 5.0 \times 10^{-3} GeV^{-1} (46 eV < m_a < 1020 eV). These fields can be utilized to convert X rays into Axion Like Particles (ALPs) coherently similar to X-ray diffraction. In this paper, we perform the first theoretical calculation of the Laue-case conversion in crystals based on the Darwin dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction. The calculation shows that the Laue-case conversion has longer interaction length than the Bragg case, and that ALPs in the keV range can be resonantly converted by tuning an incident angle of X rays. ALPs with mass up to O(10 keV) can be searched by Light-Shining-through-a-Wall (LSW) experiments at synchrotron X-ray facilities.

For this purpose, we have developed a novel pulsed-magnet system, composed of multiple racetrack-magnets and a transportable power supply. It produces fields of about 10 T over 0.8 m with a high repetition rate of 0.2 Hz and yields a new method of probing vacuum with high intensity fields. The data obtained with a total of 27,676 pulses provide a limit on the ALP-two-photon coupling constant that is more stringent by a factor of 5.2 compared to a previous x-ray LSW limit for the ALP mass below 0.1 eV.

We report the observation and the theoretical explanation of the parametric down-conversion nonlinear susceptibility at the $K$-absorption edge of diamond and at the $L_{23}$-absorption edge of a silicon crystal. Using arguments similar to those invoked to successfully predict resonant inelastic x-ray spectra, we derive an expression for the renormalization term of the non-linear susceptibility at the x-ray edges, which can be evaluated by using first-principles calculations of the atomic scattering factor $f_1$. Our model is shown to reproduce the observed enhancement of the parametric down-conversion at the diamond $K$ and the Si $L_{23}$ edges rather than the suppression previously claimed.

We have developed a polarized hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES) system to study the ground-state symmetry of strongly correlated materials. The linear polarization of the incoming X-ray beam is switched by the transmission-type phase retarder composed of two diamond (100) crystals. The best degree of the linear polarization $P_L$ is $-0.96$, containing the vertical polarization component of 98%. A newly developed low temperature two-axis manipulator enables easy polar and azimuthal rotations to select the detection direction of photoelectrons. The lowest temperature achieved is 9 K, offering us a chance to access the ground state even for the strongly correlated electron systems in cubic symmetry. The co-axial sample monitoring system with the long-working-distance microscope enables us to keep measuring the same region on the sample surface before and after rotation procedures. Combining this sample monitoring system with a micro-focused X-ray beam by means of an ellipsoidal Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror (25 $μ$m $\times$ 25 $μ$m (FWHM)), we have demonstrated the polarized valence-band HAXPES on NiO for voltage application as resistive random access memories to reveal the origin of the metallic spectral weight near the Fermi level.

We have studied the electronic structure of bulk single crystals and epitaxial films of magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$. Fe $2p$ core-level spectra show clear differences between hard x-ray (HAX-) and soft x-ray (SX-) photoemission spectroscopy (PES), indicative of surface effects. The bulk-sensitive spectra exhibit temperature ($T$)-dependent charge excitations across the Verwey transition at $T_V$=122 K, which is missing in the surface-sensitive spectra. An extended impurity Anderson model full-multiplet analysis reveals roles of the three distinct Fe-species (A-Fe$^{3+}$, B-Fe$^{2+}$, B-Fe$^{3+}$) below $T_V$ for the Fe $2p$ spectra, and its $T-$dependent evolution. The Fe $2p$ HAXPES spectra show a clear magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the metallic phase of magnetized 100-nm-thick films. The model calculations also reproduce the MCD and identify the magnetically distinct sites associated with the charge excitations. Valence band HAXPES shows finite density of states at $E_F$ for the polaronic metal with remnant order above $T_V$, and a clear gap formation below $T_V$. The results indicate that the Verwey transition is driven by changes in the strongly correlated and magnetically active B-Fe$^{2+}$ and B-Fe$^{3+}$ electronic states, consistent with resistivity and bulk-sensitive optical spectra.

HAXPES spectra of Sr2IrO4 and Ba2IrO4 are well reproduced by the quasi-particle densities of states calculated by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). It is demonstrated that the insulating nature of the iridates is triggered by antiferromagnetic correlation (Slater type) combined with electron correlation (Mott type). The extremely-low-energy bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy reveals "bad metallic" states in the paramagnetic phase of the iridates, suggesting strongly renormalized metallic states above the Neel temperature as predicted by the LDA+DMFT.

A spectral weight shift in HAXPES away from the Fermi energy is attributed to single-ion recoil effects due to high energy photoelectrons. In conjunction with inverse PES the intrinsic correlated Mott-Hubbard-type electronic structure is unravelled, yielding an averaged Coulomb correlation energy Uav ~ 3.2 eV.

We use hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) to investigate the electronic structure of YbAl2, for which the Yb valence has not been consistently reported to date. The bulk sensitivity and the analytical simplicity provided by the Yb 3d core-level HAXPES allow a reliable determination of the mean valence of Yb ions. For YbAl2, it is evaluated to be +2.20, which remains nearly unchanged below 300 K. The Kondo resonance peak with an extremely high Kondo temperature (above 2000 K) is clearly identified in the valence-band spectra. The results indicate that a coherent Kondo state can be robust even in a nearly divalent system.

We have investigated the electronic structures of recently discovered superconductor FeSe by soft-x-ray and hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with high bulk sensitivity. The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF), which is demonstrated to be a coherent quasi-particle peak. Compared with the results of the band structure calculation with local-density approximation, Fe 3d band narrowing and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting an importance of the electron correlation effect in FeSe. The self energy correction provides the larger mass enhancement value (Z^-1=3.6) than in Fe-As superconductors and enables us to separate a incoherent part from the spectrum. These features are quite consistent with the results of recent dynamical mean-field calculations, in which the incoherent part is attributed to the lower Hubbard band.

We study the surface and bulk electronic structure of the room-temperature ferromagnet Co:TiO2 anatase films using soft and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with probe sensitivities of ~1 nm and ~10 nm, respectively. We obtain direct evidence of metallic Ti$^{3+}$ states in the bulk, which get suppressed to give a surface semiconductor, thus indicating a surface-bulk dichotomy. X-ray absorption and high-sensitivity resonant photoemission spectroscopy reveal Ti$^{3+}$ electrons at the Fermi level (E$_F$) and high-spin Co$^{2+}$ electrons occurring away from E$_F$. The results show the importance of the charge neutrality condition: Co$^{2+}$ + V$_{O}$$^{2-}$ + 2Ti$^{4+}$ $\leftrightarrow$ Co$^{2+}$ + 2Ti$^{3+}$ (V$_O$ is oxygen vacancy), which gives rise to the elusive Ti 3d carriers mediating ferromagnetism via the Co 3d-O 2p-Ti 3d exchange interaction pathway of the occupied orbitals.

We investigate the electronic structure of Chromium Nitride (CrN) across the first-order magneto-structural transition at T_N ~ 286 K. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy shows a gap in the 3d partial density of states at the Fermi level and an On-site Coulomb energy U ~ 4.5 eV, indicating strong electron-electron correlations. Bulk-sensitive high resolution (6 meV) laser photoemission reveals a clear Fermi edge indicating an antiferromagnetic metal below T_N. Hard x-ray Cr 2p core-level spectra show T-dependent changes across T_N which originate from screening due to coherent states as substantiated by cluster model calculations using the experimentally observed U. The electrical resistivity confirms an insulator above T_N (E_g ~ 70 meV) which becomes a disordered metal below T_N. The results indicate CrN transforms from a correlated insulator to an antiferromagnetic metal, coupled to the magneto-structural transition.

Contrary to a common expectation, it is found that the 5d-orbital electrons contribute prominently to the conduction electrons in gold while the conduction electrons in silver are to some extent free-electron-like with negligible 4d contribution, which could be related to a well-known fact that gold is more stable than silver in air. The 4d electron correlation effects are found to be essential for the conduction electron character in silver.

The valence band spectra of these compounds also show Yb2+ peaks at the Fermi level. These observations establish an unambiguous case of a strong mixed valence at quantum criticality for the first time among heavy fermion systems, calling for a novel scheme for a quantum critical model beyond the conventional Doniach picture in beta-YbAlB4.

The Magneli phase Ti4O7 exhibits two sharp jumps in resistivity with coupled structural transitions as a function of temperature at Tc1=142 K and Tc2=154 K. We have studied electronic structure changes across the two transitions using 7 eV laser, soft x-ray and hard x-ray (HX) photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Ti 2p-3d resonant PES and HX-PES show a clear metallic Fermi-edge and mixed valency above Tc2. The low temperature phase below Tc1 shows a clear insulating gap of 100 meV. The intermediate phase between Tc1 and Tc2 indicates a pseudogap coexisting with remnant coherent states. HX-PES and complementary calculations have confirmed the coherent screening in the strongly correlated intermediate phase. The results suggest existence of a highly anomalous state sandwiched between the mixed-valent Fermi liquid and charge ordered Mott-insulating phase in Ti4O7.

A comparison of the photoemission spectra with the energy loss functions in bulk and surface, obtained from optical reflectivity, enables us to distinguish between the energy loss satellite of Yb$^{2+}$ peak and Yb$^{3+}$ multiplet. The results clearly indicate a purely divalent Yb state except for the surface of YbS. We demonstrate that the present method is highly reliable in identifying the electronic structure and the mean valence in $f$-electron systems.

The three-dimensional band structures and Fermi surface (FS) shapes of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ have been determined by soft X-ray $hν$-dependent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The differences in the Fermi surface topology and the non-$4f$ electronic structures between CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ are qualitatively explained by the band-structure calculation for both $4f$ itinerant and localized models, respectively. The Ce valences in CeRu$_2X_2$ ($X$ = Si, Ge) at 20 K are quantitatively estimated by the single impurity Anderson model calculation, where the Ce 3d hard X-ray core-level PES and Ce 3d X-ray absorption spectra have shown stronger hybridization and signature for the partial $4f$ contribution to the conduction electrons in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.

The spectral weight of the lowest energy state found to be enhanced in the bulk sensitive Ni 2p core-level PES. A configuration-interaction model including the bound state screening has shown significant agreement with the core-level spectra, and the off and on-resonance VB spectra. We have studied the electronic structure of multilayers composed of a band insulator LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and a Mott insulator LaVO$_3$ (LVO) by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, which has a probing depth as large as $\sim 60 Å$. The Mott-Hubbard gap of LVO remained open at the interface, indicating that the interface is insulating unlike the LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ multilayers. We found that the valence of V in LVO were partially converted from V$^{3+}$ to V$^{4+}$ only at the interface on the top side of the LVO layer and that the amount of V$^{4+}$ increased with LVO layer thickness. We suggest that the electronic reconstruction to eliminate the polarity catastrophe inherent in the polar heterostructure is the origin of the highly asymmetric valence change at the LVO/LAO interfaces.
