We investigated the optical properties of single crystals of one-dimensional telluride Ta4SiTe4, which shows high thermoelectric performance below room temperature. Optical conductivity estimated from reflectivity spectra indicates the presence of a small energy gap of 0.1-0.15 eV at the Fermi energy. At the lowest energy, optical conductivity along the Ta4SiTe4 chain is an order of magnitude higher than that perpendicular to this direction, reflecting the anisotropic electron conduction in Ta4SiTe4. These results indicate that coexistence of a very small band gap and anisotropic electron conduction is a promising strategy to develop a high-performance thermoelectric material for low temperature applications.

Photonic accelerators have attracted increasing attention in artificial intelligence applications. The multi-armed bandit problem is a fundamental problem of decision making using reinforcement learning. However, the scalability of photonic decision making has not yet been demonstrated in experiments, owing to technical difficulties in physical realization. We propose a parallel photonic decision-making system for solving large-scale multi-armed bandit problems using optical spatiotemporal chaos. We solve a 512-armed bandit problem online, which is much larger than previous experiments by two orders of magnitude. The scaling property for correct decision making is examined as a function of the number of slot machines, evaluated as an exponent of 0.86. This exponent is smaller than that in previous work, indicating the superiority of the proposed parallel principle. This experimental demonstration facilitates photonic decision making to solve large-scale multi-armed bandit problems for future photonic accelerators.

Since the discovery of the Verwey transition in magnetite, transition metal compounds with pyrochlore structures have been intensively studied as a platform for realizing remarkable electronic phase transitions. We report the discovery of a unique phase transition that preserves the cubic symmetry of the beta-pyrochlore oxide CsW$_2$O$_6$, where each of W 5d electrons are confined in regular-triangle W3 trimers. This trimer formation is an unprecedented self-organization of d electrons, which can be resolved into a charge order satisfying the Anderson condition in a nontrivial way, orbital order caused by the distortion of WO6 octahedra, and the formation of a spin-singlet pair in a regular-triangle trimer. Electronic instability due to the unusual three-dimensional nesting of Fermi surfaces and the localized nature of the 5d electrons characteristic of the pyrochlore oxides were found to play important roles in this unique charge-orbital-spin coupled phenomenon.

The inversion and volume effects on magnetism in a spinel-type magnetically frustrated compound, CoAl2O4, and its gallium-substituted system, CoAl2-xGaxO4, were investigated. Magnetically frustrated Co2+ with spin S = 3/2 on the tetrahedral site formed a diamond lattice in CoAl2O4 located in the vicinity of the magnetic phase boundary between Neel and spin-spiral states. In the Ga-substituted system, the number of Co ions, the so-called inversion h dominating the octahedral site, increased with increasing x. From comprehensive crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal measurements, increments of both volume and inversion strongly reduced the Neel point, while the latter also induced a spin-glass state above the critical value of hc = 0.09. In the spin glass state, h > hc, the orbital degree of freedom of Co2+ ions in the octahedral site appeared in the magnetic entropy, which couples strongly with that of spin, even above the magnetic transitions. Above h ~ hc, the field-induced quenched magnetic moment appeared above the transitions. Therefore, a short range ordered state emerged among the paramagnetic, antiferromganetic, and spin-glass states in the magnetic phase diagram.

The magnetic and dielectric properties under high magnetic fields are studied in the single crystal of Cu3Mo2O9. This multiferroic compound has distorted tetrahedral spin chains. The effects of the quasi-one dimensionality and the geometrical spin frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We measure the magnetoelectric current and the differential magnetization under the pulsed magnetic field up to 74 T. We also measure the electric polarization versus the electric field curve/loop under the static field up to 23 T. Dielectric properties change at the magnetic fields where the magnetization jumps are observed in the magnetization curve. Moreover, the magnetization plateaus are found at high magnetic fields.

We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4$\pm$0.05)$m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$.

To elucidate the underlying nature of the hidden order (HO) state in heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2, we measure electrical transport properties of ultraclean crystals in a high field/low temperature regime. Unlike previous studies, the present system with much less impurity scattering resolves a distinct anomaly of the Hall resistivity at H*=22.5 T well below the destruction field of the HO phase ~36 T. In addition, a novel quantum oscillation appears above a magnetic field slightly below H*. These results indicate an abrupt reconstruction of the Fermi surface, which implies a possible phase transition well within the HO phase caused by a band-dependent destruction of the HO parameter. The present results definitely indicate that the HO transition should be described by an itinerant electron picture.

Magnetoresistance measurements have been performed on a gated two-dimensional electron system (2DES) separated by a thin barrier layer from a layer of InAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). Clear features of the quantum Hall effect were observed despite the proximity of the QDs layer to the 2DES. However, the magnetoresistance ($ρ_{xx}$) and Hall resistance ($ρ_{xy}$) are suppressed significantly in the magnetic field range of filling factor $ν<1$ when a positive voltage is applied to the front gate. The influence of the charge state in QDs was observed on the transport properties of the nearby 2DES only in the field range of $ν< 1$. It is proposed that the anomalous suppression of $ρ_{xx}$ and $ρ_{xy}$ is related to spin excitation, which is induced by spin-flip processes involving electrons in the QDs and the 2DES.

The folded phonon mode at 98 cm$^{-1}$ appears not only in the dimerized (D) phase but also in the dimerized-anitiferromagnetic (DAF) phase on the doped CuGeO$_3$. The splitting was observed in the incommensurate (IC) phase and the antiferromagnetically ordered incommensurate (IAF) phase above $H_C$. The split-off branches exhibit different field dependence from that of the pure CuGeO$_3$ in the vicinity of $H_C$, and the discrepancy in the IAF phase is larger than that in the IC phase. It is caused by the interaction between the solitons and the impurities.

An absorption line, which was found at 98 cm$^{-1}$ in the dimerized phase (D phase), was assigned to a folded phonon mode of B$_{3u}$ symmetry. The splitting of the folded mode into two components in the incommensurate phase (IC phase) has been observed for the first time. A new broad absorption centered at 63 cm$^{-1}$ was observed only in the ${\bf E}\parallel b$ axis polarization, which was assigned to a magnetic excitation from singlet ground state to a continuum state.
