We perform radiative magnetohydrodynamic calculations for the solar quiet region to investigate the dependence of statistical flow on magnetic properties and the three-dimensional (3D) structure of magnetic patches in the presence of large-scale flow that mimics differential rotation. It has been confirmed that strong magnetic field patches move faster in the longitudinal direction at the solar surface. Consequently, strong magnetic patches penetrate deeper into the solar interior. The motion of the deep-rooted magnetic patches is influenced by the faster differential rotation in the deeper layer. In this study, we perform realistic radiative magnetohydrodynamic calculations using R2D2 code to validate that stronger patches have deeper roots. We also add large-scale flow to mimic the differential rotation. The magnetic patches are automatically detected and tracked, and we evaluate the depth of 30,000 magnetic patches. The velocities of 2.9 million magnetic patches are then measured at the photosphere. We obtain the dependence of these values on the magnetic properties, such as field strength and flux. Our results confirm that strong magnetic patches tend to show deeper roots and faster movement, and we compare our results with observations using the point spread function of instruments at the Hinode and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Our result is quantitatively consistent with previous observational results of the SDO.

Statistical inference with nonresponse is quite challenging, especially when the response mechanism is nonignorable. In this case, the validity of statistical inference depends on untestable correct specification of the response model. To avoid the misspecification, we propose semiparametric Bayesian estimation in which an outcome model is parametric, but the response model is semiparametric in that we do not assume any parametric form for the nonresponse variable. We adopt penalized spline methods to estimate the unknown function. We also consider a fully nonparametric approach to modeling the response mechanism by using radial basis function methods. Using Polya-gamma data augmentation, we developed an efficient posterior computation algorithm via Gibbs sampling in which most full conditional distributions can be obtained in familiar forms. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated in simulation studies and an application to longitudinal data.

We propose a semiparametric two-stage least square estimator for the heterogeneous treatment effects (HTE). We propose a semiparametric two-stage least square estimator for the heterogeneous treatment effects (HTE). HTE is the solution to certain integral equation which belongs to the class of Fredholm integral equations of the first kind, which is known to be ill-posed problem. Naive semi/nonparametric methods do not provide stable solution to such problems. Then we propose to approximate the function of interest by orthogonal series under the constraint which makes the inverse map** of integral to be continuous and eliminates the ill-posedness. We illustrate the performance of the proposed estimator through simulation experiments.

We provide sufficient conditions for the identification of the heterogeneous treatment effects, defined as the conditional expectation for the differences of potential outcomes given the untreated outcome, under the nonignorable treatment condition and availability of the information on the marginal distribution of the untreated outcome. These functions are useful both to identify the average treatment effects (ATE) and to determine the treatment assignment policy. The identification holds in the following two general setups prevalent in applied studies: (i) a randomized controlled trial with one-sided noncompliance and (ii) an observational study with nonignorable assignment with the information on the marginal distribution of the untreated outcome or its sample moments. To handle the setup with many integrals and missing values, we propose a (quasi-)Bayesian estimation method for HTE and ATE and examine its properties through simulation studies. We also apply the proposed method to the dataset obtained by the National Job Training Partnership Act Study.

Abstract:
We prepared polycrystalline samples of the A_xBO_2 type layered oxides Na_0.77MnO_2 and LiCoO_2, and measured thermal conductivity from 15 to 280 K. Na0.77MnO_2 shows a low thermal conductivity of 15 mW/cmK, while LiCoO_2 shows a much higher value of 40 mW/cmK at 280 K. The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline samples of (Na,Ca)Co_2O_4 is found to be unusually low, 20 mW/cmK at 280 K. On the assumption of the Wiedemann-Franz law, the lattice thermal conductivity is estimated to be 18 mW/cmK at 280 K, and it does not change appreciably with the substitution of Ca for Na. A quantitative analysis has revealed that the phonon mean free path is comparable with the lattice parameters, where the point-defect scattering plays an important role. Electronically the same samples show a metallic conduction down to 4.2 K, which strongly suggests that NaCo_2O_4 exhibits a glass-like poor thermal conduction together with a metal-like good electrical conduction. The present study further suggests that a strongly correlated system with layered structure can act as a material of a phonon glass and an electron crystal.

Abstract:
The resistivity and thermopower of Na$_{1+x}$Co$_2$O$_4$ and Na$_{1.1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$O$_4$ are measured and analyzed. In Na$_{1+x}$Co$_2$O$_4$, whereas the resistivity increases with $x$, the thermopower is nearly independent of $x$. This suggests that the excess Na is unlikely to supply carriers, and decreases effective conduction paths in the sample. In Na$_{1.1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$O$_4$, the resis…

In Na$_{1+x}$Co$_2$O$_4$, whereas the resistivity increases with $x$, the thermopower is nearly independent of $x$. This suggests that the excess Na is unlikely to supply carriers, and decreases effective conduction paths in the sample. In Na$_{1.1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$O$_4$, the resistivity and the thermopower increase with $x$, and the Ca$^{2+}$ substitution for Na$^+$ reduces the majority carriers in NaCo$_2$O$_4$. This means that they are holes, which is consistent with the positive sign of the thermopower. Strong correlation in this compound is evidenced by the peculiar temperature dependence of the resistivity.
