Abstract:
To derive a new H$α$ luminosity function and to understand the clustering properties of star-forming galaxies at $z \approx 0.24$, we have made a narrow-band imaging survey for H$α$ emitting galaxies in the HST COSMOS 2 square degree field. We used the narrow-band filter NB816 ($λ_c = 8150$ Å, $Δλ= 120$ Å) and sampled H$α$ emitters with $EW_{\rm obs}(\rm Hα+ [N\textsc{ii}]) > 12$ Åin a redshift…

To derive a new H$α$ luminosity function and to understand the clustering properties of star-forming galaxies at $z \approx 0.24$, we have made a narrow-band imaging survey for H$α$ emitting galaxies in the HST COSMOS 2 square degree field. We used the narrow-band filter NB816 ($λ_c = 8150$ Å, $Δλ= 120$ Å) and sampled H$α$ emitters with $EW_{\rm obs}(\rm Hα+ [N\textsc{ii}]) > 12$ Åin a redshift range between $z=0.233$ and $z=0.251$ corresponding to a depth of 70 Mpc. We obtained 980 H$α$ emitting galaxies in a sky area of 5540 arcmin$^2$, corresponding to a survey volume of $3.1 \times 10^4 {\rm Mpc^3}$. We derive a H$α$ luminosity function with a best-fit Schechter function parameter set of $α= -1.35^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$, $\logφ_* = -2.65^{+0.27}_{-0.38}$, and $\log L_* ({\rm erg s^{-1}}) = 41.94^{+0.38}_{-0.23}$. The H$α$ luminosity density is $2.7^{+0.7}_{-0.6} \times 10^{39}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. After subtracting the AGN contribution (15 %) to the H$α$ luminosity density, the star formation rate density is evaluated as $1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.4} \times 10^{-2}$ $M_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. The angular two-point correlation function of H$α$ emitting galaxies of $\log L({\rm Hα}) > 39.8$ is well fit by a power law form of $w(θ) = 0.013^{+0.002}_{-0.001} θ^{-0.88 \pm 0.03}$, corresponding to the correlation function of $ξ(r) = (r/1.9{\rm Mpc})^{-1.88}$. We also find that the H$α$ emitters with higher H$α$ luminosity are more strongly clustered than those with lower luminosity.

Abstract:
We have carried out a wide-field imaging survey for [OII]3727 emitting galaxies at z~1.2 in the HST COSMOS 2 square degree field using the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. The survey covers a sky area of 6700 arcmin^2 in the COSMOS field, and a redshift range between 1.17 and 1.20 (Delta_z = 0.03), corresponding to a survey volume of 5.56*10^5 Mpc^3. We obtain a sample of 3176 [OII] emitting galaxies with observed emission-line equivalent widths greater than 26 AA. Since our survey tends to sample brighter [OII]3727 emitting galaxies, we also analyze a sample of fainter [OII]3727 emitting galaxies found in the Subaru Deep Field (SDF). We find an extinction-corrected [OII] luminosity density of 10^{40.35^+0.08_-0.06} ergs s^-1 Mpc-3, corresponding to star formation rate density of 0.32^+0.06_-0.04 M_sun yr-1 Mpc^-3 in the COSMOS field at z~1.2. This is the largest survey for [OII]3727 emitters beyond z=1 currently available.

Abstract:
Recently, Zheng et al. (2005) found evidence for an overdensity of galaxies around a radio-loud quasar, SDSS J0836+0054, at z=5.8 (a five arcmin$^2$ region). We have examined our deep optical imaging data (B, V, r', i', z', and NB816) taken with the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. The NB816 narrow-band filter (lambda_c = 815 nm and $Δλ= 12$ nm) is suitable for searching for Ly$α$ emitters a…

We have found a new strong Ly$α$ emitter at $z \approx 5.7$ close to object B identified by Zheng et al. Further, the non detection of the nine objects selected by Zheng et al. (2005) in our B, V, and r' images provides supporting evidence that they are high-z objects.

We discuss observational properties of strong emission-line galaxies at low redshift found by our deep imaging survey for high-redshift Ly alpha emitters. In our surveys, we used the narrowband filter, NB816 (lambda_center=8150A with FWHM = 120A), and the intermediate-band filter, IA827 (lambda_center = 8270A with FWHM = 340A). In this survey, 62 NB816-excess (> 0.9 mag) and 21 IA827-excess (> 0.8 mag) objects were found. Among them, we found 20 NB816-excess and 4 IA827-excess Ly alpha emitter candidates. Therefore, it turns out that 42 NB816-excess and 17 IA827-excess objects are strong emission-line objects at lower redshift. Since 4 objects in the two low-z samples are common, the total number of strong low-z emitters is 55. Applying our photometric redshift technique, we identify 7 H alpha emitters at z~0.24, 20 H beta-[OIII] ones at z~0.65, and 11 [OII] ones at z~1.19. However, we cannot determine reliable photometric redshifts of the remaining 17 emitters. The distributions of their rest frame equivalent widths are consistently understood with recent studies of galaxy evolution from z~1 to z~0.

Abstract:
In order to search for high-redshift galaxies beyond $z = 6.6$ in the Subaru Deep Field, we have investigated NB921-dropout galaxies where NB921 is the narrowband filter centered at 919.6 nm with FWHM of 13.2 nm for the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. There are no secure NB921-dropout candidates brighter than $z^\prime = 25.5$. Based on this result, we discuss the UV luminosity function of…
