New schemes for the nuclear spin quantum memory are proposed based on a system composed of two electrons or one electron coupled to a single nuclear spin in isotopically purified group IV elemental and II-VI compound semiconductors. The qubit consists of the singlet state and one of the triplet states of two electrons or simply of an electron spin. These systems are free from the decoherence due to the nuclear dipole-dipole interaction and are advantageous for the long memory time. In the case of two electrons, the protocol for the quantum state transfer between the electron spin qubit and the nuclear spin qubit is based on the magnetic or electric field tuning of the singlet-triplet state crossing and on the hyperfine coupling supplemented with a well-defined scheme to initialize the nuclear spin. In the case of a single electron qubit, the quantum state transfer is driven by the hyperfine interaction itself without the need of the nuclear spin initialization. Many practical systems are considered, e.g., two electrons loaded on a Si or ZnSe quantum dot, a single electron charged state in a Si quantum dot doped with a P atom, a single electron charged $ ^{28}$Si quantum dot doped with an isotope atom of $ ^{29}$Si, and a localized electron system of Si:P and ZnSe:F in the bulk crystal. General aspects of these systems are investigated and a comparison of merits and demerits is made between the two-electron qubit and the single-electron qubit.

Photons and electrons are the key quantum media for the quantum information processing based on solid state devices. The essential ingredients to accomplish the quantum repeater were investigated and their underlying physics were revealed. The relevant elementary processes of the quantum state transfer between a single photon and a single electron were analyzed, to clarify the conditions to be satisfied to achieve the high fidelity of the quantum state transfer. An optical method based on the Faraday rotation was proposed to carry out the Bell measurement of two electrons which is a key operation in the entanglement swap** for the quantum repeater and its feasibility was confirmed. Also investigated was the quantum dynamics in the electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots and a couple of new phenomena were predicted related to the correlations induced by the hyperfine interaction, namely, bunching and revival in the electron spin measurements. These findings will pave the way to accomplish the efficient and robust quantum repeater and nuclear spin quantum memory.

We investigate quantum dynamics in the electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots and clarify the fundamental features of quantum correlation induced via successive electron spin measurements. This quantum correlation leads to interesting phenomena such as the bunching of outcomes in the electron spin measurements and the revival of an arbitrary initial electron spin state. The nuclear spin system is also affected by the quantum correlation and is in fact squeezed via conditional measurements or postselection. This squeezing is confirmed by calculating the increase in the purity of the nuclear spin system. Thus the successive electron spin measurements provide a probabilistic method to squeeze the nuclear spin system. These new features are predicted not only for the case of a double quantum dots occupied by a pair of electrons but also for the case of a single quantum dot occupied by a single electron or a pair of electrons.

We have investigated the dynamics of the electron-nuclei coupled system in quantum dots. The bunching of results of the electron spin measurements and the revival in the conditional probabilities are salient features of the nuclear spin memory. The underlying mechanism is the squeezing of the nuclear spin state and the correlations between the successive electron spin measurements. Further we make a proposal for the preparation and detection of superposition states of nuclear spins merely relying on electron spin measurements. For unpolarized, completely random nuclear spin state one can still trace the quantum interference effects. We discuss the realization of these schemes for electron spins on both single and double QDs.

A new microscopic approach to the optical transitions in quantum dots and quantum dot molecules, which accounts for both diagonal and non-diagonal exciton-phonon interaction, is developed. The cumulant expansion of the linear polarization is generalized to a multilevel system and is applied to calculation of the full time dependence of the polarization and the absorption spectrum. In particular, the broadening of zero-phonon lines is evaluated directly. It is found that in some range of the dot distance real phonon-assisted transitions between exciton states dominate the dephasing, while virtual transitions are of minor importance. The influence of Coulomb interaction, tunneling, and structural asymmetry on the exciton dephasing in quantum dot molecules is analyzed.

Rabi oscillations were recorded by varying the pulse amplitude for fixed pulse durations between 4 ps and 10 ps. Up to 5 periods are visible, making it possible to quantify the excitation dependent dam**. We find that this dam** is more pronounced for shorter pulse widths and show that its origin is the non-resonant excitation of carriers in the wetting layer, most likely involving bound-to-continuum and continuum-to-bound transitions.
