We derive a systematic construction for form factors of relevant fields in the thermal perturbation of the tricritical Ising model, an integrable model with scattering amplitudes described by the $E_7$ bootstrap. We find a new type of recursive structure encoding the information in the bound state fusion structure, which fully determines the form factors of the perturbing field and the order/disorder fields, for which we present a mathematical proof. We revisit and extend Fisher's argument for a Ginzburg-Landau description of multicritical Yang-Lee models in terms of a single boson Lagrangian with potential $\varphi^2 (i \varphi)^n$. We explicitly study the cases of $n=1,2$ by a Truncated Hamiltonian Approach based on the free massive boson perturbed by $\boldsymbol P\boldsymbol T$ symmetric deformations, providing clear evidence of the spontaneous breaking of $\boldsymbol P \boldsymbol T$ symmetry. For $n=1$, the symmetric and the broken phases are separated by the critical point corresponding to the minimal model $\mathcal M(2,5)$, while for $n=2$, they are separated by a critical manifold corresponding to the minimal model $\mathcal M(2,5)$ with $\mathcal M(2,7)$ on its boundary. Our numerical analysis strongly supports our Ginzburg-Landau descriptions for multicritical Yang-Lee models.

We consider local quenches from initial states generated by a single spin-flip in either the true or the false vacuum state of the confining quantum Ising spin chain in the ferromagnetic regime. Contrary to global quenches, where the light-cone behaviour is strongly suppressed, we find a significant light-cone signal propagating with a nonzero velocity besides the expected localised oscillating component. Combining an analytic representation of the initial state with a numerical description of the relevant excitations using the two-fermion approximation, we can construct the spectrum of post-quench excitations and their overlaps with the initial state, identifying the underlying mechanism. For confining quenches built upon the true vacuum, the propagating signal consists of superpositions of left and right-moving mesons esca** confinement. In contrast, for anti-confining quenches built upon the false vacuum it is composed of superpositions of left and right-moving bubbles which escape Wannier-Stark localisation.

We set up a hydrodynamic description of the non-equilibrium dynamics of sine-Gordon quantum field theory for generic coupling. It is built upon an explicit form of the Bethe Ansatz description of general thermodynamic states, with the structure of the resulting coupled integral equations encoded in terms of graphical diagrams. The resulting framework is applied to derive results for the Drude weights of charge and energy. Quantities associated with the charge universally have fractal dependence on the coupling, which is notably absent from those associated with energy, a feature explained by the different roles played by reflective scattering in transporting these quantities. We then present far-from-equilibrium results, including explicit time evolution starting from bipartite initial states and dynamical correlation functions. Our framework can be applied to explore numerous other aspects of non-equilibrium dynamics, which opens the way to a wide array of theoretical studies and potential novel experimental predictions.

One-dimensional Mott insulators can be described using the sine-Gordon model, an integrable quantum field theory that provides the low-energy effective description of several one-dimensional gapped condensed matter systems, including recent realizations with trapped ultra-cold atoms. Employing the theory of Generalized Hydrodynamics, we demonstrate that this model exhibits separation of the transport of topological charge vs. energy. Analysis of the quasiparticle dynamics reveals that the mechanism behind the separation is the reflective scattering between topologically charged kinks/antikinks. The effect of these scattering events is most pronounced at strong coupling and low temperatures, where the distribution of quasiparticles is narrow compared to the reflective scattering amplitude. This effect results in a distinctively shaped "arrowhead" light cone for the topological charge.

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the quantum sine-Gordon model describing a pair of Josephson-coupled one-dimensional bosonic quasi-condensates. Motivated by experimentally accessible quench procedures where the zero mode of the quasi-condensates is weakly coupled to finite momentum modes, we develop a novel Hamiltonian truncation scheme relying on a mini-superspace treatment of the zero mode (MSTHA). We apply this method to simulate the time evolution after both weak and strong quantum quenches, injecting a low or high energy density into the system, and demonstrate that MSTHA accurately captures the dynamics from the hard core boson limit to the experimentally relevant weakly interacting regime for sufficiently mild quenches. In the case of high energy densities, MSTHA breaks down for weak interaction but still extends the range of validity of previous Hamiltonian truncation schemes. We also compare these results to the semiclassical truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) and establish that the dynamics can be well approximated by the semiclassical description in the weakly interacting regime realised in the experiments. In addition, we clarify the importance of the phononic modes depending on the sine-Gordon interaction strength.

Despite this fact, its complete thermodynamic description in all its regimes has been lacking. Here we fill this gap and derive the framework that captures its thermodynamics and serves as the basis of its hydrodynamic description. The recently proposed classification of integrability-breaking perturbations according to their strength is studied in the context of quantum field theories. Using random matrix methods to diagnose the resulting quantum chaotic behaviour, we investigate the $φ^4$ and $φ^6$ interactions of a massive scalar, by considering the crossover between Poissonian and Wigner-Dyson distributions in systems truncated to a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. We find that a naive extension of the scaling of crossover coupling with the volume observed in spin chains does not give satisfactory results for quantum field theory. Instead, we demonstrate that considering the scaling of the crossover coupling with the number of particles yields robust signatures, and is able to distinguish between the strengths of integrability breaking in the $φ^4$ and $φ^6$ quantum field theories.

Integrable Quantum Field Theories can be solved exactly using bootstrap techniques based on their elastic and factorisable S-matrix. While knowledge of the scattering amplitudes reveals the exact spectrum of particles and their on-shell dynamics, the expression of the matrix elements of the various operators allows the reconstruction of off-shell quantities such as two-point correlation functions with a high level of precision. In this review, we summarise results relevant to the contact point between theory and experiment providing a number of quantities that can be computed theoretically with great accuracy. We concentrate on universal amplitude ratios which can be determined from the measurement of generalised susceptibilities, and dynamical structure factors, which can be accessed experimentally e.g. via inelastic neutron scattering or nuclear magnetic resonance. Besides an overview of the subject and a summary of recent advances, we also present new results regarding generalised susceptibilities in the tricritical Ising universality class.

In this paper we study the non-unitary deformations of the two-dimensional Tricritical Ising Model obtained by coupling its two spin Z2 odd operators to imaginary magnetic fields. Varying the strengths of these imaginary magnetic fields and adjusting correspondingly the coupling constants of the two spin Z2 even fields, we establish the presence of two universality classes of infrared fixed points on the critical surface. The first class corresponds to the familiar Yang-Lee edge singularity, while the second class to its tricritical version. We argue that these two universality classes are controlled by the conformal non-unitary minimal models M(2,5) and M(2,7) respectively, which is supported by considerations based on PT symmetry and the corresponding extension of Zamolodchikov's c-theorem, and also verified numerically using the truncated conformal space approach. Our results are in agreement with a previous numerical study of the lattice version of the Tricritical Ising Model [1]. We also conjecture the classes of universality corresponding to higher non-unitary multicritical points obtained by perturbing the conformal unitary models with imaginary coupling magnetic fields.

We study the decay of the false vacuum in the scaling Ising and tricritical Ising field theories using the Truncated Conformal Space Approach and compare the numerical results to theoretical predictions in the thin wall limit. In the Ising case, the results are consistent with previous studies on the quantum spin chain and the $\varphi^4$ quantum field theory; in particular we confirm that while the theoretical predictions get the dependence of the bubble nucleation rate on the latent heat right, they are off by a model dependent overall coefficient. The tricritical Ising model allows us on the other hand to examine more exotic vacuum degeneracy structures, such as three vacua or two asymmetric vacua, which leads us to study several novel scenarios of false vacuum decay by lifting the vacuum degeneracy using different perturbations.

In this work we consider the 1+1 dimensional $\varphi^4$ theory, which is the simplest model that provides a realisation of this problem. We realise the decay as a quantum quench and study the subsequent evolution using a truncated Hamiltonian approach. In the thin wall limit, the decay rate can be described in terms of the mass of the kink interpolating between the vacua in the degenerate limit, and the energy density difference between the false and true vacuum once the degeneracy is lifted by a symmetry breaking field, a.k.a. the latent heat. We demonstrate that the numerical simulations agree well with the theoretical prediction for several values of the coupling in a range of the value of the latent heat, apart from a normalisation factor which only depends on the interaction strength.

Truncated Conformal Space Approach (TCSA) is a highly efficient method to compute spectra, operator matrix elements and time evolution in quantum field theories defined as relevant perturbations of 1+1-dimensional conformal field theories. However, similarly to other exact diagonalisation methods, TCSA is ridden with the "curse of dimensionality": the dimension of the Hilbert space increases exponentially with the (square root of the) truncation level, limiting its precision by the available memory resources. Here we describe an algorithm which exploits the chiral factorisation property of conformal field theory with periodic boundary conditions to achieve a substantial improvement in the truncation level. The Chirally Factorised TCSA (CFTCSA) algorithm presented here works with inputs describing the necessary CFT data in a specified format. It makes possible much more precise calculations with given computing resources and extends the reach of the method to problems requiring large Hilbert space dimensions. In fact, it has already been used in a number of recent works ranging from determination of form factors, through studying confinement of topological excitations to non-equilibrium dynamics. Besides the description of the algorithm, a MATLAB implementation of the algorithm is also provided as an ancillary file package, supplemented with example codes computing spectra, matrix elements and time evolution, and with CFT data for three different quantum field theories. We also give a detailed how-to guide for constructing the required CFT data for Virasoro minimal models with central charge c<1, and for the massless free boson with c=1.

We study the leading and sub-leading magnetic perturbations of the thermal $E_7$ integrable deformation of the tricritical Ising model. In the low-temperature phase, these magnetic perturbations lead to the confinement of the kinks of the model. The resulting meson spectrum can be obtained using the semi-classical quantisation, here extended to include also mesonic excitations composed of two different kinks. An interesting feature of the integrable sub-leading magnetic perturbation of the thermal $E_7$ deformation of the model is the possibility to swap the role of the two operators, i.e. the possibility to consider the model as a thermal perturbation of the integrable $\mathcal{A}_3$ model associated to the sub-leading magnetic deformation. Due to the occurrence of vacuum degeneracy unrelated to spontaneous symmetry breaking in $\mathcal{A}_3$, the confinement pattern shows novel features compared to previously studied models. Interestingly enough, the validity of the semi-classical description in terms of the $\mathcal{A}_3$ endpoint extends well beyond small fields, and therefore the full parameter space of the joint thermal and sub-leading magnetic deformation is well described by a combination of semi-classical approaches. All predictions are verified by comparison to finite volume spectrum resulting from truncated conformal space.

We develop a truncated Hamiltonian method to investigate the dynamics of the $(1+1)d~φ^4$ theory following quantum quenches. The results are compared to two different semi-classical approaches, the self-consistent Gaussian approximation and the truncated Wigner approximation, and used to determine the range of validity of these widely used approaches. We show that the self-consistent approximation is strongly limited in comparison to the truncated Hamiltonian method which for larger cutoffs is practically exact for the parameter range studied. We find that the self-consistent approximation is only valid when the effective mass is in the vicinity of the renormalised mass. Similarly to the self-consistent approximation, the truncated Wigner approximation is not able to capture the correct mass renormalisation, and breaks down for strong enough interactions where the bare mass becomes negative. We attribute the failure of TWA to the presence of a classical symmetry broken fixed point. Besides establishing the truncated Hamiltonian approach as a powerful tool for studying the dynamics of the $φ^4$ model, our results on the limitation of semi-classical approximations are expected to be relevant for modelling the dynamics of other quantum field theories.

The thermal deformation of the critical point action of the 2D tricritical Ising model gives rise to an exact scattering theory with seven massive excitations based on the exceptional $E_7$ Lie algebra. The high and low temperature phases of this model are related by duality. This duality guarantees that the leading and sub-leading magnetisation operators, $σ(x)$ and $σ'(x)$, in either phase are accompanied by associated disorder operators, $μ(x)$ and $μ'(x)$. Working specifically in the high temperature phase, we write down the sets of bootstrap equations for these four operators. For $σ(x)$ and $σ'(x)$, the equations are identical in form and are parameterised by the values of the one-particle form factors of the two lightest $\mathbb{Z}_2$ odd particles. Similarly, the equations for $μ(x)$ and $μ'(x)$ have identical form and are parameterised by two elementary form factors. Using the clustering property, we show that these four sets of solutions are eventually not independent; instead, the parameters of the solutions for $σ(x)/σ'(x)$ are fixed in terms of those for $μ(x)/μ'(x)$. We use the truncated conformal space approach to confirm numerically the derived expressions of the matrix elements as well as the validity of the $Δ$-sum rule as applied to the off-critical correlators. We employ the derived form factors of the order and disorder operators to compute the exact dynamical structure factors of the theory, a set of quantities with a rich spectroscopy which may be directly tested in future inelastic neutron or Raman scattering experiments.

We study inhomogeneous quantum quenches in the attractive regime of the sine-Gordon model. In our protocol, the system is prepared in an inhomogeneous initial state in finite volume by coupling the topological charge density operator to a Gaussian external field. After switching off the external field, the subsequent time evolution is governed by the homogeneous sine-Gordon Hamiltonian. Varying either the interaction strength of the sine-Gordon model or the amplitude of the external source field, an interesting transition is observed in the expectation value of the soliton density. This affects both the initial profile of the density and its time evolution and can be summarised as a steep transition between behaviours reminiscent of the Klein-Gordon, and the free massive Dirac fermion theory with initial external fields of high enough magnitude. The transition in the initial state is also displayed by the classical sine-Gordon theory and hence can be understood by semi-classical considerations in terms of the presence of small amplitude field configurations and the appearance of soliton excitations, which are naturally associated with bosonic and fermionic excitations on the quantum level, respectively. Features of the quantum dynamics are also consistent with this correspondence and comparing them to the classical evolution of the density profile reveals that quantum effects become markedly pronounced during the time evolution. These results suggest a crossover between the dominance of bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom whose precise identification in terms of the fundamental particle excitations can be rather non-trivial. Nevertheless, their interplay is expected to influence the sine-Gordon dynamics in arbitrary inhomogeneous settings.

In addition to the significant single-particle contributions to the dynamic spectrum, each two-particle channel with different masses is found to exhibit an edge singularity at the threshold of the total mass and decays with an inverse square root of energy, which is attributed to the singularity of the two-particle density of states at the threshold. The singularity is absent for particles with equal masses due to a cancellation mechanism involving the structure of the form factors. As a consequence, the dynamic structure factor displays a cascade of bum** peaks in the continuum region with clear singular features which can serve as a solid guidance for the material realization of the quantum $E_{8}$ model.

Recently it was suggested that certain perturbations of integrable spin chains lead to a weak breaking of integrability in the sense that integrability is preserved at the first order in the coupling. Here we examine this claim using level spacing distribution. We find that the volume dependent crossover between integrable and chaotic level spacing statistics which marks the onset of quantum chaotic behaviour, is markedly different for weak vs. strong breaking of integrability. In particular, for the gapless case we find that the crossover coupling as a function of the volume $L$ scales with a $1/L^2$ law for weak breaking as opposed to the $1/L^3$ law previously found for the strong case.

We point out that two classes of deformations of integrable models, developed completely independently, have deep connections and share the same algebraic origin. One class includes the $T\bar T$-deformation of 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theory and related solvable irrelevant deformations proposed recently. The other class is a specific type of long range integrable deformation of quantum spin chains introduced a decade ago, in the context of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We show that the detailed structures of the two deformations are formally identical and therefore share many features. Both deformations preserve integrability and lead to non-local deformed theories, resulting in a change of the corresponding factorized S-matrices. We also prove a factorisation formula for the expectation value of the operators which trigger the deformation on the lattice; similar results in quantum field theory play an essential role in the solvability of such deformations. We point out that the long range deformation is a natural counterpart of the $T\bar T$-deformation for integrable spin chains, and argue that this observation leads to interesting new avenues to explore.

One of the manifestations of relativistic invariance in non-equilibrium quantum field theory is the "horizon effect" a.k.a. light-cone spreading of correlations: starting from an initially short-range correlated state, measurements of two observers at distant space-time points are expected to remain independent until their past light-cones overlap. Surprisingly, we find that in the presence of topological excitations correlations can develop outside of horizon and indeed even between infinitely distant points. We demonstrate this effect for a wide class of global quantum quenches to the sine-Gordon model. We point out that besides the maximum velocity bound implied by relativistic invariance, clustering of initial correlations is required to establish the "horizon effect". We show that quenches in the sine-Gordon model have an interesting property: despite the fact that the initial states have exponentially decaying correlations and cluster in terms of the bosonic fields, they violate the clustering condition for the soliton fields, which is argued to be related to the non-trivial field topology. The nonlinear dynamics governed by the solitons makes the clustering violation manifest also in correlations of the local bosonic fields after the quench.

We determine both analytically and numerically the entanglement between chiral degrees of freedom in the ground state of massive perturbations of 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories quantised on a cylinder. Analytic predictions are obtained from a variational Ansatz for the ground state in terms of smeared conformal boundary states recently proposed by J. Cardy, which is validated by numerical results from the Truncated Conformal Space Approach. We also extend the scope of the Ansatz by resolving ground state degeneracies exploiting the operator product expansion. The chiral entanglement entropy is computed both analytically and numerically as a function of the volume. The excellent agreement between the analytic and numerical results provides further validation for Cardy's Ansatz. The chiral entanglement entropy contains a universal $O(1)$ term $γ$ for which an exact analytic result is obtained, and which can distinguish energetically degenerate ground states of gapped systems in 1+1 dimensions.

We demonstrate that the two approaches agree for a period covering the first few oscillations, thereby giving a solid theoretical prediction in the framework of sine-Gordon model, which is thought to describe the dynamics of two bosonic condensates in quasi-one-dimensional traps coupled via a Josephson tunneling term. We conclude, however, that the recently observed phase-locking behavior cannot be explained in terms of homogeneous sine-Gordon dynamics, which hints at the role of other degrees of freedom or inhomogeneity in the experimental system.

We study homogeneous quenches in integrable quantum field theory where the initial state contains zero-momentum particles. We demonstrate that the two-particle pair amplitude necessarily has a singularity at the two-particle threshold. Albeit the explicit discussion is carried out for special (integrable) initial states, we argue that the singularity is inevitably present and is a generic feature of homogeneous quenches involving the creation of zero momentum particles. We also identify the singularity in quenches in the Ising model across the quantum critical point, and compute it perturbatively in phase quenches in the quantum sine-Gordon model which are potentially relevant to experiments. We then construct the explicit time dependence of one-point functions using a linked cluster expansion regulated by a finite volume parameter. We find that the secular contribution normally linear in time is modified by a $t\ln t$ term. We additionally encounter a novel type of secular contribution which is shown to be related to parametric resonance. It is an interesting open question to resum the new contributions and to establish their consequences directly observable in experiments or numerical simulations.

Complete information on the equilibrium behaviour and dynamics of a quantum field theory (QFT) is provided by multipoint correlation functions. However, their theoretical calculation is a challenging problem, even for exactly solvable models. This has recently become an experimentally relevant problem, due to progress in cold-atom experiments simulating QFT models and directly measuring higher order correlations. Here we compute correlation functions of the quantum sine-Gordon model, a prototype integrable model of central interest from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Building upon the so-called Truncated Conformal Space Approach, we numerically construct higher order correlations in a system of finite size in various physical states of experimental relevance, both in and out of equilibrium. We measure deviations from Gaussianity due to the presence of interaction and analyse their dependence on temperature, explaining the experimentally observed crossover between Gaussian and non-Gaussian regimes. We find that correlations of excited states are markedly different from the thermal case, which can be explained by the integrability of the system. We also study dynamics after a quench, observing the effects of the interaction on the time evolution of correlation functions, their spatial dependence, and their non-Gaussianity as measured by the kurtosis.

In contrast to lattice systems where powerful numerical techniques such as matrix product state based methods are available to study the non-equilibrium dynamics, the non-equilibrium behaviour of continuum systems is much harder to simulate. We demonstrate here that Hamiltonian truncation methods can be efficiently applied to this problem, by studying the quantum quench dynamics of the 1+1 dimensional Ising field theory using a truncated free fermionic space approach. After benchmarking the method with integrable quenches corresponding to changing the mass in a free Majorana fermion field theory, we study the effect of an integrability breaking perturbation by the longitudinal magnetic field. In both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases of the model we find persistent oscillations with frequencies set by the low-lying particle excitations not only for small, but even for moderate size quenches. In the ferromagnetic phase these particles are the various non-perturbative confined bound states of the domain wall excitations, while in the paramagnetic phase the single magnon excitation governs the dynamics, allowing us to capture the time evolution of the magnetisation using a combination of known results from perturbation theory and form factor based methods. We point out that the dominance of low lying excitations allows for the numerical or experimental determination of the mass spectra through the study of the quench dynamics.

Light cone spreading of correlations and entanglement is a key feature of the non-equilibrium quench dynamics of many-body quantum systems. First proposed theoretically, it has been experimentally revealed in cold-atomic gases and it is expected to be a generic characteristic of any quench in systems with short-range interactions and no disorder. Conversely, here we propose a mechanism that, through confinement of the elementary excitations, strongly suppresses the light-cone spreading. Confinement is a celebrated concept in particle physics, but it also exists in condensed matter systems, most notably in one spatial dimension where it has been experimentally observed. Our results are obtained for the Ising spin chain with transverse and longitudinal magnetic field, but the proposed mechanism is of general validity since it is based on the sole concept of confinement and it should be easily observed in cold atom experiments.

We consider the problem of determining the initial state of integrable quantum field theory quenches in terms of the post-quench eigenstates. The corresponding overlaps are a fundamental input to most exact methods to treat integrable quantum quenches. We construct and examine an infinite integral equation hierarchy based on the form factor bootstrap, proposed earlier as a set of conditions deter- mining the overlaps. Using quenches of the mass and interaction in Sinh-Gordon theory as a concrete example, we present theoretical arguments that the state has the squeezed coherent form expected for integrable quenches, and supporting an Ansatz for the solution of the hierarchy. Moreover we also develop an iterative method to solve numerically the lowest equation of the hierarchy. The iterative solution along with extensive numerical checks performed using the next equation of the hierarchy provide a strong numerical evidence that the proposed Ansatz gives a very good approximation for the solution.

In the ferromagnetic phase of the q-state Potts model, switching on an external magnetic field induces confinement of the domain wall excitations. For the Ising model (q = 2) the spectrum consists of kink-antikink states which are the analogues of mesonic states in QCD, while for q = 3, depending on the sign of the field, the spectrum may also contain three-kink bound states which are the analogues of the baryons. In recent years the resulting "hadron" spectrum was described using several different approaches, such as quantum mechanics in the confining linear potential, WKB methods and also the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Here we compare the available predictions to numerical results from renormalization group improved truncated conformal space approach (RG-TCSA). While mesonic states in the Ising model have already been considered in a different truncated Hamiltonian approach, this is the first time that a precision numerical study is performed for the 3-state Potts model. We find that the semiclassical approach provides a very accurate description for the mesonic spectrum in all the parameter regime for weak magnetic field, while the low-energy expansion from the Bethe-Salpeter equation is only valid for very weak fields where it gives a slight improvement over the semiclassical results. In addition, we confirm the validity of the recent predictions for the baryon spectrum obtained from solving the quantum mechanical three-body problem.

We study the $SU(2)_k$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) theory perturbed by the trace of the primary field in the adjoint representation, a theory governing the low-energy behaviour of a class of strongly correlated electronic systems. While the model is non-integrable, its dynamics can be investigated using the numerical technique of the truncated conformal spectrum approach combined with numerical and analytical renormalization groups (TCSA+RG). The numerical results so obtained provide support for a semiclassical analysis valid at $k\gg 1$. Namely, we find that the low energy behavior is sensitive to the sign of the coupling constant, $λ$. Moreover for $λ>0$ this behavior depends on whether $k$ is even or odd. With $k$ even, we find definitive evidence that the model at low energies is equivalent to the massive $O(3)$ sigma model. For $k$ odd, the numerical evidence is more equivocal, but we find indications that the low energy effective theory is critical.

Applying the form factor expansion and the c-theorem, we show that the resulting c-function has the same physical content as that found by Zamolodchikov from the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. We demonstrate several aspects of this form factor relocalisation, which suggests a novel approach to the construction of form factors and spectral sums in integrable renormalisation group flows with non-diagonal scattering.

We present a conjecture for the exact expression of finite volume expectation values in excited states in integrable quantum field theories, which is an extension of an earlier conjecture to the case of general diagonal factorized scattering with bound states and a nontrivial bootstrap structure. The conjectured expression is a spectral expansion which uses the exact form factors and the excited state thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz as building blocks. The conjecture is proven for the case of the trace of the energy-moment tensor. Concerning its validity for more general operators, we provide numerical evidence using the truncated conformal space approach. It is found that the expansion fails to be well-defined for small values of the volume in cases when the singularity structure of the TBA equations undergoes a non-trivial rearrangement under some critical value of the volume. Despite these shortcomings, the conjectured expression is expected to be valid for all volumes for most of the excited states, and as an expansion above the critical volume for the rest.

Following our previous work [PRL 113 (2014) 09020] we present here a detailed comparison of the quench action approach and the predictions of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, with the result that while the quench action formalism correctly captures the steady state, the GGE does not give a correct description of local short-distance correlation functions. We extend our studies to include another initial state, the so-called q-dimer state. We present important details of our construction, including new results concerning exact overlaps for the dimer and q-dimer states, and we also give an exact solution of the quench-action-based overlap-TBA for the q-dimer. Furthermore, we extend our computations to include the xx spin correlations besides the zz correlations treated previously, and give a detailed discussion of the underlying reasons for the failure of the GGE, especially in the light of new developments.

We consider the field theory describing the scaling limit of the Potts quantum spin chain using a combination of two approaches. We consider the field theory describing the scaling limit of the Potts quantum spin chain using a combination of two approaches. The first is the renormalized truncated conformal space approach (TCSA), while the second one is a new thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) system for the excited state spectrum in finite volume. For the TCSA we investigate and clarify several aspects of the renormalization procedure and counter term construction. The TBA system is first verified by comparing its ultraviolet limit to conformal field theory and the infrared limit to exact S-matrix predictions. We then show that the TBA and the renormalized TCSA match each other to a very high precision for a large range of the volume parameter, providing both a further verification of the TBA system and a demonstration of the efficiency of the TCSA renormalization procedure. We also discuss the lessons learned from our results concerning recent developments regarding the low-energy scattering of quasi-particles in the quantum Potts spin chain.

We study the nonequilibrium time evolution of the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin chain, with a choice of dimer product and Neel states as initial states. We investigate numerically various short-ranged spin correlators in the long-time limit and find that they deviate significantly from predictions based on the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) hypotheses. By computing the asymptotic spin correlators within the recently proposed quench-action formalism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 257203 (2013)], however, we find excellent agreement with the numerical data. We, therefore, conclude that the GGE cannot give a complete description even of local observables, while the quench-action formalism correctly captures the steady state in this case.

We developed the theory of finite volume form factors in the presence of integrable defects. These finite volume form factors are expressed in terms of the infinite volume form factors and the finite volume density of states and incorporate all polynomial corrections in the inverse of the volume. We tested our results, in the defect Lee-Yang model, against numerical data obtained by truncated conformal space approach (TCSA), which we improved by renormalization group methods adopted to the defect case. To perform these checks we determined the infinite volume defect form factors in the Lee-Yang model exactly, including their vacuum expectation values. We used these data to calculate the two point functions, which we compared, at short distance, to defect CFT. We also derived explicit expressions for the exact finite volume one point functions, which we checked numerically. In all of these comparisons excellent agreement was found.

For special values of the exponent, computations by other methods are available and used to validate our findings. Our results can also be interpreted as a further support for a previous conjecture about the connection between finite- and infinite-volume form factors valid up to terms exponentially decaying in the volume.

We study a quantum quench of the mass and the interaction in the Sinh-Gordon model starting from a large initial mass and zero initial coupling. Our focus is on the determination of the expansion of the initial state in terms of post-quench excitations. We argue that the large energy profile of the involved excitations can be relevant for the late time behaviour of the system and common regularization schemes are unreliable. We therefore proceed in determining the initial state by first principles expanding it in a systematic and controllable fashion on the basis of the asymptotic states. Our results show that, for the special limit of pre-quench parameters we consider, it assumes a squeezed state form that has been shown to evolve so as to exhibit the equilibrium behaviour predicted by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble.
