The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. Here we review the EUSO-SPB1 instrument and flight and the EAS search.

The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. Time-reversal symmetry is broken due to the strong electronic correlation effect, while the spin-orbit coupling effect is negligible. The system provides an ideal platform for investigating the chiral anomaly physics by controlling dimensionality and strong electronic correlation.

Theoretical and experimental studies have supported that the electronic structure of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure is described by two-dimensional Dirac fermions. When the interlayer tunneling is coherent, the electronic structure of the system becomes three-dimensional, and we expect the peak structure to appear in the interlayer resistivity under magnetic fields. We theoretically and experimentally show that the peak appears in the interlayer resistivity at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. From the experiment, we estimate that the magnitude of the interlayer tunneling is $t_1 \sim 1$ meV. Our result opens the door to investigating the three-dimensional electronic structure of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$.

The quest for entangled spin excitations has stimulated intense research on frustrated magnetic systems. For almost two decades, the triangular-lattice Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ has been the hottest candidate for a $gapless$ quantum spin liquid with itinerant spinons. Very recently, however, this scenario was overturned as electron-spin-resonance (ESR) studies unveiled a spin gap, calling for reevaluation of the magnetic ground state. Here we achieve a precise map** of this spin-gapped phase through the Mott transition by ultrahigh-resolution strain tuning. Our transport experiments reveal a reentrance of charge localization below $T^{\star}=6$ K associated with a gap size of 30-50 K. The negative slope of the insulator-metal boundary, $dT^{\star}/dp<0$, evidences the low-entropy nature of the spin-singlet ground state. By tuning the enigmatic '6 K anomaly' through the phase diagram of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, we identify it as the transition to a valence-bond-solid phase, with typical magnetic and structural fingerprints, that persists at $T\rightarrow 0$ until unconventional superconductivity and metallic transport proliferate.

The experiment consists of an air shower (AS) array with a surface of $83, 000\, {\rm m}^2$ and an underground water Cherenkov muon detector (MD) array covering $5, 400\, {\rm m}^2$. The experimental site is at the Mt. Chacaltaya plateau in La Paz, Bolivia, with an altitude of $4, 740\, {\rm m}$ corresponding to $572\, {\rm g}/{\rm cm}^2$ atmospheric thickness. As the prototype experiment of ALPACA, the ALPAQUITA experiment aims to begin data acquisition in late 2021. The ALPAQUITA array consists of a smaller AS array ($18, 450\, {\rm m}^2$) and underground MD ($900\, {\rm m}^2$), which are now under construction. ALPAQUITA's sensitivity to gamma-ray sources is evaluated with Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation finds that five gamma-ray sources observed by H.E.S.S. and HAWC experiments will be detected by ALPAQUITA beyond 10 TeV and one out of these five - HESS J1702-420A - above 300 TeV in one calendar year observation. The latter finding means that scientific discussions can be made on the emission mechanism of gamma rays beyond 100 TeV from southern sources on the basis of the observational results of this prototype experiment.

We report on the Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations in the quasi two-dimensional molecular conductor $α-$(BETS)$_{2}$I$_{3}$ [BETS: bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene] laminated on polyimide films at 1.7 K. From the SdH phase factor, we verified experimentally that the material is in the Dirac fermion phase under pressure. $α-$(BETS)$_{2}$I$_{3}$ is in the vicinity of the phase transition between strongly correlated insulating and Dirac fermion phases, and is a possible candidate for an ambient-pressure molecular Dirac fermion system. However, the SdH oscillations indicate that the Berry phase is zero at ambient pressure. Under pressure, a $π$ Berry phase emerges when the metal-insulator crossover is almost suppressed at $\sim$0.5 GPa. The results contrast those for the pioneering molecular Dirac fermion system $α-$(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$I$_{3}$ [BEDT-TTF: bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] in which Dirac fermions and semiconducting behavior are simultaneously observed.

A Dirac electron system in solids mimics a relativistic quantum physics that is compatible with Maxwell's equations, by which we anticipate unified electromagnetic responses. We find a large orbital diamagnetism only along the interplane direction and the nearly temperature-independent conductance of the order of e2/h for the new 2D Dirac organic conductor, a-(BETS)2I3. Distinct from conventional electrons in solids whose nonrelativistic effects bifurcate electric and magnetic responses, the observed orbital diamagnetism scales the electrical conductivity for a wide temperature range. This demonstrates that an electromagnetic duality that is valid only within the relativistic framework is revived in solids.

We investigate the effect of strong electronic correlation on the massless Dirac fermion system, $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, under pressure. In this organic salt, one can control the electronic correlation by changing pressure and access the quantum critical point between the massless Dirac fermion phase and the charge ordering phase. We theoretically study the electronic structure of this system by applying the slave-rotor theory and find that the Fermi velocity decreases without creating a mass gap upon approaching the quantum critical point from the massless Dirac fermion phase. We show that the pressure-dependence of the Fermi velocity is in good quantitative agreement with the results of the experiment where the Fermi velocity is determined by the analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the doped samples. Our result implies that the massless Dirac fermion system exhibits a quantum phase transition without creating a mass gap even in the presence of strong electronic correlations.

One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Pressure dependence of the conductivity and thermoelectric power is measured through the Mott transition in the layer organic conductor EtMe3P[Pd(dmit)2]2. The critical behavior of the thermoelectric effect provides a clear and objective determination of the Mott-Hubbard transition during the isothermal pressure sweep. Above the critical end point, the metal-insulator crossing, determined by the thermoelectric effect minimum value, is not found to coincide with the maximum of the derivative of the conductivity as a function of pressure. We show that the critical exponents of the Mott-Hubbard transition fall within the Ising universality class regardless of the dimensionality of the system.

The Wigner d function, which is the essential part of an irreducible representation of SU(2) and SO(3) parameterized with Euler angles, has been know to suffer from a serious numerical errors at high spins, if it is calculated by means of the Wigner formula as a polynomial of cos and sin of half of the second Euler angle. This paper shows a way to avoid this problem by expressing the d functions as the Fourier series of the half angle. A precise numerical table of the coefficients of the series is obtainable from a web site.

We evaluate the exposure during nadir observations with JEM-EUSO, the Extreme Universe Space Observatory, on-board the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station. Designed as a mission to explore the extreme energy Universe from space, JEM-EUSO will monitor the Earth's nighttime atmosphere to record the ultraviolet light from tracks generated by extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In the present work, we discuss the particularities of space-based observation and we compute the annual exposure in nadir observation. The results are based on studies of the expected trigger aperture and observational duty cycle, as well as, on the investigations of the effects of clouds and different types of background light. We show that the annual exposure is about one order of magnitude higher than those of the presently operating ground-based observatories.

We report the first observation of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and quantized Hall resistance in the multilayered massless Dirac fermion system $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ with tilted cones. Holes were injected into the thin crystal fixed on a polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate by contact electrification. The detection of SdH oscillations whose phase was modified by Berry's phase $π$ strongly suggested that the carrier do** was successful in this system. We succeeded in detecting the quantum Hall effect (QHE) with the steps which is the essence of two dimensional Dirac fermion systems. The number of effectively doped layers was examined to be two in this device. We reveal that the correlation between effective layers plays an important role in QHE.

We study the prolate-shape predominance of the nuclear ground-state deformation by calculating the masses of more than two thousand even-even nuclei using the Strutinsky method, modified by Kruppa, and improved by us. The influences of the surface thickness of the single-particle potentials, the strength of the spin-orbit potential, and the pairing correlations are investigated by varying the parameters of the Woods-Saxon potential and the pairing interaction. The strong interference between the effects of the surface thickness and the spin-orbit potential is confirmed to persist for six sets of the Woods-Saxon potential parameters. The observed behavior of the ratios of prolate, oblate, and spherical nuclei versus potential parameters are rather different in different mass regions. It is also found that the ratio of spherical nuclei increases for weakly bound unstable nuclei. Differences of the results from the calculations with the Nilsson potential are described in detail.

Extending the Kruppa's prescription for the continuum level density, we have recently improved the BCS method with seniority-type pairing force in such a way that the effects of discretized unbound states are properly taken into account for finite depth single-particle potentials. In this paper, it is further shown, by employing the Woods-Saxon potential, that the calculation of spatial observables like nuclear radius converges as increasing the basis size in the harmonic oscillator expansion. Namely the disastrous problem of a "particle gas" surrounding nucleus in the BCS treatment can be circumvented. In spite of its simplicity, the new treatment gives similar results to those by more elaborate Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations; e.g., it even mimics the pairing anti-halo effect. The obtained results as well as the reason of convergence in the new method are investigated by a variant of the Thomas-Fermi approximation within the limited phase space which corresponds to the harmonic oscillator basis truncation.

The Woods-Saxon-Strutinsky method (the microscopic-macroscopic method) combined with Kruppa's prescription for positive energy levels, which is necessary to treat neutron rich nuclei, is studied to clarify the reason for its success and to propose improvements for its shortcomings. The reason why the plateau condition is met for the Nilsson model but not for the Woods-Saxon model is understood in a new interpretation of the Strutinsky smoothing procedure as a low-pass filter. Essential features of Kruppa's level density is extracted in terms of the Thomas-Fermi approximation modified to describe spectra obtained from diagonalization in truncated oscillator bases. A method is proposed which weakens the dependence on the smoothing width by applying the Strutinsky smoothing only to the deviations from a reference level density. The BCS equations are modified for the Kruppa's spectrum, which is necessary to treat the pairing correlation properly in the presence of continuum. The potential depth is adjusted for the consistency between the microscopic and macroscopic Fermi energies. It is shown, with these improvements, that the microscopic-macroscopic method is now capable to reliably calculate binding energies of nuclei far from stability.

We report the influence of the field effect on the dc resistance and Hall coefficient in the strain-induced Mott insulating state of an organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br. Conductivity obeys the formula for activated transport $σ_{\Box} = σ_{0}\exp(-W/k_{B}T)$, where $σ_{0}$ is a constant and $W$ depends on the gate voltage. The gate voltage dependence of the Hall coefficient shows that, unlike in conventional FETs, the effective mobility of dense hole carriers ($\sim1.6\times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$) is enhanced by a positive gate voltage. This implies that carrier do** involves delocalization of intrinsic carriers that were initially localized due to electron correlation.

It can be applied to super-conducting deformed drip-line nuclei as easily as to stable or spherical nuclei. This method is applied to a simulation of the approach to the neutron drip line. It turns out that the HFB solution has a stronger pairing and a smaller deformation as the Fermi level is raised. However, such changes are smooth and finite. No divergences or discontinuities of the radius or other quantities are found in the limit of zero Fermi energy. The nuclear density continues to be localized even a little beyond the drip line.

It is appropriate to describe pairing correlations in the continuum in coordinate-space representations. An improved gradient method is used for faster convergences under constraint of orthogonality between orbitals. To prevent high-lying orbitals to shrink into a spatial point, a repulsive momentum dependent force is introduced, which turns out to unveil the nature of high-lying canonical-basis orbitals. The asymptotic properties at large radius and the relation with quasiparticle states are discussed for the obtained canonical basis.

The latter simulates a square-well like radial profile of the mean potential. The ratio of prolate nuclei is 86% with the standard strengths corresponding to the actual atomic nuclei. By weakening the spin-orbit potential, the ratio oscillates strongly, having a local minimum value of 45% with a half of the standard strength and a local maximum value of 78% without the spin-orbit potential.

Small cutoff energies are shown to give rise to ripples in the tail, whose wave length corresponds to the cutoff momentum. The superdeformation (SD) in non-rotating states is studied with the HF+BCS method using the Skyrme interaction. In applying the BCS theory, the seniority pairing force is employed, of which strengths are determined in order to reproduce the empirical pairing gap formula, $\barΔ = 12 A^{-1/2}$ MeV, through a smooth level density obtained in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Properties of superdeformation are investigated by calculating potential energy surfaces (PES) for various sets of the pairing force strengths and the Skyrme force parameter for 194Hg and 236,238U. The best results are obtained using both the SkM* force and the pairing force strength determined in this paper. By making use of this set of forces, a systematic calculation of SD states is carried out extensively for even-even nuclei for 20 <= Z <= 82. From our calculation, the barriers preventing the decay into the normally deformed states are about twice as high as those predicted by Krieger et al., who used the same Skyrme interaction but a pairing force stronger than ours. The differences of the present results from the Nilsson-Strutinsky calculation are analyzed.

An overview of a microscopic framework based on the Hartree-Fock description of the mean field is presented which, starting from an effective interaction allows a description of collective motions. A study of the isotope shifts in the Pb region illustrates the importance of the effective interactions and points to their limitations. Such forces should be improved in order to achieve a better description of nuclei properties especially with the coming availability of exotic beam facilities. The coupling of collective quadrupole and octupole degrees of freedom in $^{194}$Pb is analyzed within the Generator Coordinate Method, which represents a step beyond the simple mean-field approximation. As a last example, we present a study of nuclear rotations. First we discuss results on superdeformed rotating bands in $^{192}$Hg, $^{194}$Hg and $^{194}$Pb obtained without including a treatment of pairing correlations. Rotational bands with (neutron h_11/2)^1 (proton h_11/2)^1 configurations are studied using a particle-rotor model in which a proton and a neutron quasiparticles interacting through a zero-range force are coupled with a triaxial rotor. It is shown for 124Cs that one can reproduce the signature dependence of energy and B(M1)/B(E2) ratio best when one takes into account gamma-deformations with irrotational-flow moment of inertia in addition to the proton-neutron interaction proposed by Semmes and Ragnarsson. Including both effects, a systematic calculation of signature splittings is performed for Cs, La isotopes and N=75 isotones to be compared with experiments. Discussions are also done on the deficiencies of the cranking model concerning its applicability to signature inversion phenomena in odd-odd nuclei.
