In this paper, it is shown that every univariate polynomial function is mixed monotone globally with a polynomial decomposition function. The decomposition functions can be constructed from the Gram matrix representation of polynomial functions. The tightness of polynomial decomposition functions is discussed. An example is provided to show that polynomial decomposition functions, in addition to being global decomposition functions, can be much tighter than local decomposition functions constructed using local Jacobian bounds. Furthermore, an example is provided to demonstrate the application to reachable set over-approximation.

This paper proposes an algorithm which can be used in hybrid Coulomb spacecraft formations to minimize propellant by maximizing the amount of force that is generated by Coulomb forces. This problem is difficult due to the nonlinearities inherent in Coulomb's law. The problem is posed as a series of matrix rank minimization problems which can be solved efficiently using a trace heuristic. A numerical example is provided which shows that, using the proposed control allocation algorithm, the amount of propellant required to perform a reconfiguration maneuver is reduced by approximately 40% compared to using solely thrusters.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been the main agenda of the whole world, since it came into sight in December 2019 as it has significantly affected the world economy and healthcare system. Given the effects of COVID-19 on pulmonary tissues, chest radiographic imaging has become a necessity for screening and monitoring the disease. Numerous studies have proposed Deep Learning approaches for the automatic diagnosis of COVID-19. Although these methods achieved astonishing performance in detection, they have used limited chest X-ray (CXR) repositories for evaluation, usually with a few hundred COVID-19 CXR images only. Thus, such data scarcity prevents reliable evaluation with the potential of overfitting. In addition, most studies showed no or limited capability in infection localization and severity grading of COVID-19 pneumonia. In this study, we address this urgent need by proposing a systematic and unified approach for lung segmentation and COVID-19 localization with infection quantification from CXR images. To accomplish this, we have constructed the largest benchmark dataset with 33,920 CXR images, including 11,956 COVID-19 samples, where the annotation of ground-truth lung segmentation masks is performed on CXRs by a novel human-machine collaborative approach. An extensive set of experiments was performed using the state-of-the-art segmentation networks, U-Net, U-Net++, and Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN). The developed network, after an extensive iterative process, reached a superior performance for lung region segmentation with Intersection over Union (IoU) of 96.11% and Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 97.99%. Furthermore, COVID-19 infections of various shapes and types were reliably localized with 83.05% IoU and 88.21% DSC. Finally, the proposed approach has achieved an outstanding COVID-19 detection performance with both sensitivity and specificity values above 99%.

Abstract:
A systematic procedure to synthesize interval observers for nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed. The feedback gains and other matrices are found from the solutions to semidefinite feasibility programs. Two cases are considered: (1) the interval observer is in the same coordinate frame as the given system, and (2) the interval observer uses a coordinate transformation. The conditions where…

Two cases are considered: (1) the interval observer is in the same coordinate frame as the given system, and (2) the interval observer uses a coordinate transformation. The conditions where coordinate transformations are necessary are detailed. Numerical examples are provided to showcase the effectiveness of the interval observers and demonstrate their application to sampled-data systems.

With the emergence of the internet of things (IoT) technology, wireless connectivity should be more ubiquitous than ever. In fact, the availability of wireless connection everywhere comes with security threats that, unfortunately, cannot be handled by conventional cryptographic solutions alone, especially in heterogeneous and decentralized future wireless networks. In general, physical layer security (PLS) helps in bridging this gap by taking advantage of the fading propagation channel. Moreover, the adoption of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in wireless networks makes the PLS techniques more efficient by involving the channel into the design loop. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive literature review on the RIS-assisted PLS for future wireless communications. We start by introducing the basic concepts of RISs and their different applications in wireless communication networks and the most common PLS performance metrics. Then, we focus on the review and classification of RIS-assisted PLS applications, exhibiting multiple scenarios, system models, objectives, and methodologies. In fact, most of the works in this field formulate an optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) or secrecy capacity (SC) at a legitimate user by jointly optimizing the beamformer at the transmitter and the RIS's coefficients, while the differences are in the adopted methodology to optimally/sub-optimally approach the solution. We finalize this survey by presenting some insightful recommendations and suggesting open problems for future research extensions.

Periodic event-triggered control (PETC) evaluates the triggering rule periodically and is well-suited for implementation on digital platforms. This paper investigates PETC design for nonlinear systems affected by external disturbances under the impulsive system formulation. Sufficient conditions are provided to ensure the input-to-state stability of the resulting closed-loop system for the state feedback and the observer-based output feedback configurations separately. For each configuration, the sampling period and the triggering functions are provided explicitly. Sufficient conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities are provided for the PETC design of incrementally quadratic nonlinear systems. Two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
