Entanglement, a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics, plays a crucial role as a valuable resource in quantum technologies. The practical implementation of entangled photon sources encounters obstacles arising from imperfections and defects inherent in physical systems and microchips, resulting in a loss or degradation of entanglement. The topological photonic insulators, however, have emerged as promising candidates, demonstrating an exceptional capability to resist defect-induced scattering, thus enabling the development of robust entangled sources. Despite their inherent advantages, building bright and programmable topologically protected entangled sources remains challenging due to intricate device designs and weak material nonlinearity. Here we present an advancement in entanglement generation achieved through a non-magnetic and tunable resonance-based anomalous Floquet insulator, utilizing an optical spontaneous four-wave mixing process. Our experiment demonstrates a substantial enhancement in entangled photon pair generation compared to devices reliant solely on topological edge states and outperforming trivial photonic devices in spectral resilience. This work marks a step forward in the pursuit of defect-robust and bright entangled sources that can open avenues for the exploration of cascaded quantum devices and the engineering of quantum states. Our result could lead to the development of resilient quantum sources with potential applications in quantum technologies.

Age-related cognitive impairment is generally characterized by gradual memory loss and decision-making difficulties. The aim of this study is to investigate multi level support and suggest relevant hel** means for the elderly with mild cognitive impairment as well as their caregivers as the primary end-users. This work reports preliminary results on an intelligent assistive system, achieved through the integration of Internet of Things, augmented reality, and adaptive fuzzy decision-making methods. The proposed system operates in different modes, including automated and semi-automated modes. The former helps the user complete their daily life activities by showing augmented reality messages or making automatic changes; while the latter allows manual changes after the real-time assessment of the user's cognitive state based on the augmented reality serious game score. We have also evaluated the accuracy of the serious game score with 37 elderly participants and compared it with users' paper-based cognitive test results. We further noted that there is an acceptable correlation between the paper-based test and users' serious game scores. Moreover, we observed that the system response in the semi-automated mode causes less data loss compared with the automated mode, as the number of active devices decreases.

In this paper, a differential MOEMS accelerometer based on the Fabry-Perot (FP) micro-cavities is presented. The optical system of the device consists of two FP cavities and the mechanical system is composed of a proof mass that is suspended by four springs. The applied acceleration tends to move the PM from its resting position. This mechanical displacement can be measured by the FP interferometer formed between the proof mass cross-section and the optical fiber end face. The proposed sensor is fabricated on a silicon on insulator (SOI) wafer using the bulk micromachining method. The results of the sensor characterization show that the accelerometer has a linear response in the range of 1g. Also, the optical sensitivity and resolution of the sensor in the static characterization are 6.52 nm/g and 153ug. The sensor sensitivity in the power measurement is 49.6 mV/g and its resonant is at 1372 Hz. Using the differential measurement method increases the sensitivity of the accelerometer. Based on experimental data, the sensor sensitivity is two times as high as that of a similar MOEMS accelerometer with one FP cavity.

In this paper, a closed-loop micro-opto-electro-mechanical system (MOEMS) accelerometer based on the Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometer is presented. The FP cavity is formed between the end of a cleaved single-mode optical fiber and the cross-section of a proof mass (PM) which is suspended by four U-shaped springs. The applied acceleration tends to move the PM in the opposite direction. The arrays of fixed and movable comb fingers produce an electrostatic force which keeps the PM in its resting position. The voltage that can provide this electrostatic force is considered as the output of the sensor. Using a closed-loop detection method it is possible to increase the measurement range without losing the resolution. The proposed sensor is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator wafer using the bulk micromachining method. The results of the sensor characterization show that the accelerometer has a linear response in the range of 5 g. In the closed-loop mode, the sensitivity and bias instability of the sensor are 1.16 V/g and 40 g, respectively.

In this paper, a novel coarse-to-fine optical MEMS accelerometer based on the Fabry Perot (FP) interferometer is proposed. The mechanical structure consists of a proof mass that is suspended by four L-shaped springs. The deflection of the proof mass due to the applied acceleration is detected using two FP cavities which comprise the optical system of the device. Using coarse-to-fine measurement and the dual-wavelength method increases the sensitivity of the accelerometer as well as the linear measurement range simultaneously. The optical simulation shows that the sensitivity of the proposed device is 10 times as high as that of a similar optical MEMS accelerometer with one FP cavity. In addition, the proposed optical system is insensitive to the displacements of the proof mass in orthogonal directions as a result of which cross-axis sensitivity is considerably reduced. The minimum feature size of the structure is 15 um and the optical signal is conducted completely through the optical fibers, facilitating the fabrication of the device. The simulation results are as follows: mechanical sensitivity of 190 nm/g, optical sensitivity of 8 nm/g, linear measurement of 5 g, and first resonance frequency of 1141 Hz.

Cognitive radio aims at identifying unused radio-frequency (RF) bands with the goal of re-using them opportunistically for other services. While compressive sensing (CS) has been used to identify strong signals (or interferers) in the RF spectrum from sub-Nyquist measurements, identifying unused frequencies from CS measurements appears to be uncharted territory. In this paper, we propose a novel method for identifying unused RF bands using an algorithm we call least matching pursuit (LMP). We present a sufficient condition for which LMP is guaranteed to identify unused frequency bands and develop an improved algorithm that is inspired by our theoretical result. We perform simulations for a CS-based RF whitespace detection task in order to demonstrate that LMP is able to outperform black-box approaches that build on deep neural networks.

A method combining video imaging in parallel microchannels with a semi-empirical mathematical model provides non-intrusive, high-throughput measurements of time-varying biofilm viscosity. The approach is demonstrated for early growth Pseudomonas sp. biofilms exposed to constant flow streams of nutrient solutions with different ionic strengths. The ability to measure viscosities at early growth stages, without inducing a shear-thickening response, enabled measurements that are among the lowest reported to date. In addition, good time resolution enabled the detection of a rapid thickening phase, which occurred at different times after the exponential growth phase finished, depending on the ionic strength. The technique opens the way for a combinatorial approach to beter understand the complex dynamical response of biofilm mechanical properties under well-controlled physical, chemical and biological growth conditions and time-limited perturbations.

In networks, there are often more than one source of capacity. The capacities can be permanently or temporarily owned by the decision maker. Depending on the nature of sources, we identify the permanent capacity, spot market capacity and contract capacity. We use a scenario tree to model the uncertainty, and build a multi-stage stochastic integer program that can incorporate multiple sources and multiple types of capacities in a general network. We propose two solution methodologies for the problem. Firstly, we design an asymptotically convergent approximation algorithm. Secondly, we design a cutting plane algorithm based on Benders decomposition to find tight bounds for the problem. The numerical experiments show superb performance of the proposed algorithms compared with commercial software.

While linear programming (LP) decoding provides more flexibility for finite-length performance analysis than iterative message-passing (IMP) decoding, it is computationally more complex to implement in its original form, due to both the large size of the relaxed LP problem, and the inefficiency of using general-purpose LP solvers. This paper explores ideas for fast LP decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We first prove, by modifying the previously reported Adaptive LP decoding scheme to allow removal of unnecessary constraints, that LP decoding can be performed by solving a number of LP problems that contain at most one linear constraint derived from each of the parity-check constraints. By exploiting this property, we study a sparse interior-point implementation for solving this sequence of linear programs. Since the most complex part of each iteration of the interior-point algorithm is the solution of a (usually ill-conditioned) system of linear equations for finding the step direction, we propose a preconditioning algorithm to facilitate iterative solution of such systems. The proposed preconditioning algorithm is similar to the encoding procedure of LDPC codes, and we demonstrate its effectiveness via both analytical methods and computer simulation results.

We propose an approximation of maximum-likelihood detection in ISI channels based on linear programming or message passing. We convert the detection problem into a binary decoding problem, which can be easily combined with LDPC decoding. We show that, for a certain class of channels and in the absence of coding, the proposed technique provides the exact ML solution without an exponential complexity in the size of channel memory, while for some other channels, this method has a non-diminishing probability of failure as SNR increases. Some analysis is provided for the error events of the proposed technique under linear programming.

Detectability of failures of linear programming (LP) decoding and the potential for improvement by adding new constraints motivate the use of an adaptive approach in selecting the constraints for the underlying LP problem. In this paper, we make a first step in studying this method, and show that it can significantly reduce the complexity of the problem, which was originally exponential in the maximum check-node degree. We further show that adaptively adding new constraints, e.g. by combining parity checks, can provide large gains in the performance.
