Motivated by the possibility of further improving the thermoelectric properties of skutterudites we investigate charge transfer and bonding in this class of materials using density functional calculations. Results for the CoP3, CoSb3, LaFe4P12 and the hypothetical FeP3 compounds are presented using the procrystal as the non-binding reference. Spherical integration and Bader analysis are performed to illustrate charge transfer differences between these compounds. The results are in good qualitative agreement with simple electronegativity considerations. The calculations confirm that the transition metal-pnictogen and the pnictogen-pnictogen bonds are covalent, while the filler atom-pnictogen bond is of a more polar and complex nature. The success of the "rattling" cage as phonon inhibitor is explained by a unique semi-correlated bonding scheme between lanthanum and phosphorus. Elongated bonds along the crystal axes surrounds the lanthanum ion and generate a dodecahedra grid. Vibrations along the crystal axes are then closely connected to and scatter from the phosphorus rings. In the other directions, a more uncorrelated vibration is possible. This duality widens the phonon dampening possibilities.

Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) we studied CaCu3Ti4O12, an intriguing material that exhibits a huge dielectric response, up to kilohertz frequencies, over a wide range of temperature. Neither in single crystals, nor in polycrystalline samples, including sintered bulk- and thin-films, did we observe the twin domains suggested in the literature. Nevertheless, in the single crystals, we saw a very high density of dislocations with a Burger vector of [110], as well as regions with cation disorder and planar defects with a displacement vector 1/4[110]. In the polycrystalline samples, we observed many grain boundaries with oxygen deficiency, in comparison with the grain interior. The defect-related structural disorders and inhomogeneity, serving as an internal barrier layer capacitance (IBLC) in a semiconducting matrix, might explain the very large dielectric response of the material. Our TEM study of the structure defects in CaCu3Ti4O12 supports a recently proposed morphological model with percolating conducting regions and blocking regions.

Abstract:
We have studied the Boron K-edge in the superconductor MgB2 by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and experimentally resolved the empty p states at the Fermi level that have previously been observed within an energy window of 0.8eV by soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Using angular resolved EELS, we find that these states at the immediate edge onset have pxy character in agreement with p…

We use synchrotron x-ray and precision electron diffraction techniques to determine accurately the structure factors of selected reflections that are sensitive to the valence electron distribution in the superconductor MgB2. These values deviate significantly from calculated structure factors using the scattering factors of free atoms, but agree well with our calculated structure factors based on density functional theory. Having experimentally established the reliability of our firstprinciple calculated structure factors, we present electron density maps of the redistribution of the valence electrons that takes place when hypothetical free atoms of Mg and B in MgB2 interact to form the real crystal.
