Competing phases and intertwined orders in coupled wires near the self-dual point
Abstract: The interplay between different quantum phases plays an important role in strongly correlated systems, such as high-$T_c$ cuprates, quantum spin systems, and ultracold atoms. In particular, the application of effective field theory model and renormalization group analysis suggested that the coexistence of density wave (DW) and superfluid (SF) orders can lead to a supersolid phase of ultracold boso… ▽ More

String-like Theory of Quantum Hall Interfaces
Abstract: We derive the effective theories for quantum hall droplets with attractive interaction among the constituent particles. In the absence of confining potentials such droplets are defined by their freely moving interfaces (or boundaries) with the vacuum. We demonstrate the effective theories take forms similar to string theories. Generalization to interfaces between different quantum Hall liquids is… ▽ More

Multi-critical point and unified description of broken-symmetry phases in spin-1/2 anti-ferromagnets on a square lattice
Abstract: We show that several distinct broken-symmetry phases in a spin-1/2 anti-ferromagnet on a square lattice with easy-plane anisotropy, including valence bond solid, chiral spin liquid, and the XY-ordered state, can all be accessed by perturbing a multi-critical point with two massless Dirac fermions coupled to a level-one Chern-Simons gauge field. This allows for a unified description of these phases… ▽ More

Bosonization in 2+1 dimensions via Chern-Simons bosonic particle-vortex duality
Abstract: Dualities provide deep insight into physics by relating two seemingly distinct theories. Here we consider a duality between lattice fermions and bosons in (2+1) spacetime dimensions, relating free massive Dirac fermions to Abelian Chern-Simons Higgs (ACSH) bosons. To establish the duality we represent the exact partition function of the lattice fermions in terms of the writhe of fermionic worldlin… ▽ More

Microscopic theory of fractional excitations in gapless bilayer quantum Hall states: semi-quantized quantum Hall states
Abstract: We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show th… ▽ More

An exactly soluble model for a fractionalized Weyl semimetal
Abstract: We construct an exactly solvable lattice model of a fractional Weyl semimetal (FWS). The low energy theory of this strongly interacting state is that of a Weyl semimetal built out of fractionally charged fermions. We show the existence of a universally quantized and fractional circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) and a violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in the system. Together with a spectral ga… ▽ More

Weyl nodal surfaces
Abstract: We consider three-dimensional fermionic band theories that exhibit Weyl nodal surfaces defined as two-band degeneracies that form closed surfaces in the Brillouin zone. We demonstrate that topology ensures robustness of these objects under small perturbations of a Hamiltonian. This topological robustness is illustrated in several four-band models that exhibit nodal surfaces protected by unitary or… ▽ More
