In this paper we consider random dynamical systems formed by concatenating maps acting on the unit interval $[0,1]$ in an iid fashion. Considered as a stationary Markov process, the random dynamical system possesses a unique stationary measure $ν$. We consider a class of non square-integrable observables $φ$, mostly of form $φ(x)=d(x,x_0)^{-\frac{1}α}$ where $x_0$ is non-periodic point satisfying some other genericity conditions, and more generally regularly varying observables with index $α\in (0,2)$. The two types of maps we concatenate are a class of piecewise $C^2$ expanding maps, and a class of intermittent maps possessing an indifferent fixed point at the origin. Under conditions on the dynamics and $α$ we establish Poisson limit laws, convergence of scaled Birkhoff sums to a stable limit law and functional stable limit laws, in both the annealed and quenched case. The scaling constants for the limit laws for almost every quenched realization are the same as those of the annealed case and determined by $ν$. This is in contrast to the scalings in quenched central limit theorems where the centering constants depend in a critical way upon the realization and are not the same for almost every realization.

According to harmonic analysis (Fourier analysis), any function $f(x)$, periodic over the interval $[-L, L]$, which satisfies the Dirichlet conditions, can be developed into an infinite sum (known in the literature as the trigonometric series, and for which, for reasons which will become evident in the course of this work, we will use the name of sinusoidal series), consisting of the weighted components of a complete biortogonal base, formed of the unitary function 1, of the fundamental harmonics $\sin(πx/L)$, even and $\cos(πx/L)$, odd ($2L$-periodic functions) and of the secondary harmonics $\sin(nπx/L)$ and $\cos(nπx/L)$ (periodic functions, with period $2L/n$, where $n\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, positive integers). The coefficients of these expansions (Fourier coefficients) can be calculated using Euler formulas. We will generalize this statement and show that the function $f(x)$ can also be developed into non-sinusoidal periodic series, formed from the sum of the weighted components of a complete, non-orthogonal base: the unit function 1, the fundamental quasi-harmonics $g(x)$, even and $h(x)$, odd ($2L$-periodic functions, with zero mean value over the definition interval) and the secondary quasi-harmonics $g_n(x)$ and $h_n(x)$ ($2L/n$-periodic functions), where $n\in \mathbb{Z}^+$. The fundamental quasi-harmonics $g(x)$ and $h(x)$ are any functions which admit expansions in sinusoidal series (satisfy Dirichlet conditions, or belong to $L^2$ space). The coefficients of these expansions are obtained with the help of certain algebraic relationships between the Fourier coefficients of the expansions of the functions $f(x)$, $g(x)$ and $h(x)$. In addition to their obvious theoretical importance, these types of expansions can have practical importance in the approximation of functions and in the numerical and analytical resolution of certain classes of differential equations.

The development of functions of real variables in Taylor and Frobenius series (whole series which are formed in nonorthogonal, nonperiodic bases), in sinusoidal Fourier series (bases of orthogonal, periodic functions), in series of special functions (bases of orthogonal, nonperiodic functions), etc. is a commonly used method for solving a wide range of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs).In this article, based on an in-depth analysis of the properties of periodic sinusoidal Fourier series (SFS), we will be able to apply this procedure to a much broader category of ODEs (all linear, homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations with constant coefficients, a large category of linear and non-linear equations with variable coefficients, systems of ODEs, integro-differential equations, etc.). We will also extend this procedure and we use it to solve certain ODEs, on non-orthogonal periodic bases, represented by non sinusoidal periodic Fourier series (SFN).

We also address the question of whether or not centering is necessary for the quenched central limit theorems (CLT) obtained by Nicol, Török and Vaienti for random dynamical systems comprised of intermittent maps. Using recent work of Abdelkader and Aimino, Hella and Stenlund we extend the results of Nicol, Török and Vaienti on quenched central limit theorems (CLT) for centered observables over random compositions of intermittent maps: first by enlarging the parameter range over which the quenched CLT holds; and second by showing that the variance in the quenched CLT is almost surely constant (and the same as the variance of the annealed CLT) and that centering is needed to obtain this quenched CLT.

We consider exponential large deviations estimates for unbounded observables on uniformly expanding dynamical systems. We show that uniform expansion does not imply the existence of a rate function for unbounded observables no matter the tail behavior of the cumulative distribution function. We give examples of unbounded observables with exponential decay of autocorrelations, exponential decay under the transfer operator in each $L^p$, $1\le p < \infty$, and strictly stretched exponential large deviation. For observables of form $|\log d(x,p)|^α$, $p$ periodic, on uniformly expanding systems we give the precise stretched exponential decay rate. We also show that a classical example in the literature of a bounded observable with exponential decay of autocorrelations yet with no rate function is degenerate as the observable is a coboundary.

The simulations employ 2+1 dynamical flavors of asqtad QCD quarks, and quenched photons. Lattice spacings vary from $\approx 0.12$ fm to $\approx 0.045$ fm. We compute the quantity $ε$, which parameterizes the corrections to Dashen's theorem for the $K^+$-$K^0$ EM mass splitting, as well as $ε_{K^0}$, which parameterizes the EM contribution to the mass of the $K^0$ itself. An extension of the nonperturbative EM renormalization scheme introduced by the BMW group is used in separating EM effects from isospin-violating quark mass effects. We correct for leading finite-volume effects in our realization of lattice electrodynamics in chiral perturbation theory, and remaining finite-volume errors are relatively small. While electroquenched effects are under control for $ε$, they are estimated only qualitatively for $ε_{K^0}$, and constitute one of the largest sources of uncertainty for that quantity. We find $ε= 0.78(1)_{\rm stat}({}^{+\phantom{1}8}_{-11})_{\rm syst}$ and $ε_{K^0}=0.035(3)_{\rm stat}(20)_{\rm syst}$. We then use these results on 2+1+1 flavor pure QCD HISQ ensembles and find $m_u/m_d = 0.4529(48)_{\rm stat}( {}_{-\phantom{1}67}^{+150})_{\rm syst}$.

Suppose $(f,\mathcal{X},ν)$ is a measure preserving dynamical system and $φ:\mathcal{X}\to\mathbb{R}$ is an observable with some degree of regularity. We investigate the maximum process $M_n:=\max\{X_1,\ldots,X_n\}$, where $X_i=φ\circ f^i$ is a time series of observations on the system. When $M_n\to\infty$ almost surely, we establish results on the almost sure growth rate, namely the existence (or otherwise) of a sequence $u_n\to\infty$ such that $M_n/u_n\to 1$ almost surely. The observables we consider will be functions of the distance to a distinguished point $\tilde{x}\in \mathcal{X}$. Our results are based on the interplay between shrinking target problem estimates at $\tilde{x}$ and the form of the observable (in particular polynomial or logarithmic) near $\tilde{x}$. We determine where such an almost sure limit exists and give examples where it does not. Our results apply to a wide class of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems, under mild assumptions on the rate of mixing, and on regularity of the invariant measure.

River-bed sediments display two universal downstream trends: fining, in which particle size decreases; and rounding, where pebble shapes evolve toward ellipsoids. Rounding is known to result from transport-induced abrasion; however many researchers argue that the contribution of abrasion to downstream fining is negligible. This presents a paradox: downstream shape change indicates substantial abrasion, while size change apparently rules it out. Here we use laboratory experiments and numerical modeling to show quantitatively that pebble abrasion is a curvature-driven flow problem. As a consequence, abrasion occurs in two well-separated phases: first, pebble edges rapidly round without any change in axis dimensions until the shape becomes entirely convex; and second, axis dimensions are then slowly reduced while the particle remains convex. Explicit study of pebble shape evolution helps resolve the shape-size paradox by reconciling discrepancies between laboratory and field studies, and enhances our ability to decipher the transport history of a river rock.

The masses are fit to staggered chiral perturbation theory with NLO electromagnetic terms, as well as analytic terms at higher order. We extrapolate the results to physical light-quark masses and to the continuum limit. At the current stage of the analysis, most, but not all, of the systematic errors have been estimated. The main goal is the comparison of kaon electromagnetic splittings to those of the pion, i.e., an evaluation of the corrections to "Dashen's theorem." This in turn will allow us to significantly reduce the systematic errors in our determination of m_u/m_d.

The Xi-Xi- is found to be bound by B_{Xi-Xi-} = 14.0(1.4)(6.7) MeV, consistent with expectations based upon phenomenological models and low-energy effective field theories constrained by nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon scattering data at the physical light-quark masses. We find weak evidence that both the deuteron and the di-neutron are bound at this pion mass, with binding energies of B_d = 11(05)(12) MeV and B_{nn} = 7.1(5.2)(7.3) MeV, respectively. With an increased number of measurements and a refined analysis, the binding energy of the H-dibaryon is B_H = 13.2(1.8)(4.0) MeV at this pion mass, updating our previous result.

An analysis of the pion mass and pion decay constant is performed using mixed-action Lattice QCD calculations with domain-wall valence quarks on ensembles of rooted, staggered n_f = 2+1 MILC configurations. Calculations were performed at two lattice spacings of b~0.125 fm and b~0.09 fm, at two strange quark masses, multiple light quark masses, and a number of lattice volumes. The ratios of light quark to strange quark masses are in the range 0.1 <= m_l / m_s <= 0.6, while pion masses are in the range 235 < m_π< 680 MeV. A two-flavor chiral perturbation theory analysis of the Lattice QCD calculations constrains the Gasser-Leutwyler coefficients bar{l}_3 and bar{l}_4 to be bar{l}_3 = 4.04(40)(+73-55) and bar{l}_4 = 4.30(51)(+84-60). All systematic effects in the calculations are explored, including those from the finite lattice space-time volume, the finite lattice spacing, and the finite fifth dimension in the domain-wall quark action. A consistency is demonstrated between a chiral perturbation theory analysis at fixed lattice spacing combined with a leading order continuum extrapolation, and the mixed-action chiral perturbation theory analysis which explicitly includes the leading order discretization effects. Chiral corrections to the pion decay constant are found to give f_π/ f = 1.062(26)(+42-40) where f is the decay constant in the chiral limit. The most recent scale setting by the MILC Collaboration yields a postdiction of f_π= 128.2(3.6)(+4.4-6.0)(+1.2-3.3) MeV at the physical pion mass.

Our calculations are precise enough to allow for a determination of the threshold scattering parameters, the scattering length a, the effective range r, and the shape-parameter P, in this channel and to examine the prediction of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory: m_pi^2 a r = 3+O(m_pi^2/Lambda_chi^2). Chiral perturbation theory is used, with the Lattice QCD results as input, to predict the scattering phase-shift (and threshold parameters) at the physical pion mass. Our results are consistent with determinations from the Roy equations and with the existing experimental phase shift data.

The typical precision of the ground-state baryon mass determination is ~0.2%, enabling a precise exploration of the volume dependence of the masses, the Gell-Mann--Okubo mass relation, and of other mass combinations. A comparison of the volume dependence with the predictions of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is performed in both the SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R and SU(3)_L X SU(3)_R expansions. Predictions of the three-flavor expansion for the hadron masses are found to describe the observed volume dependences reasonably well. Further, the Delta-N-pi axial coupling constant is extracted from the volume dependence of the nucleon mass in the two-flavor expansion, with only small modifications in the three-flavor expansion from the inclusion of kaons and etas. At a given value of m_pi L, the finite-volume contributions to the nucleon mass are predicted to be significantly smaller at m_pi ~ 140 MeV than at m_pi ~ 390 MeV due to a coefficient that scales as ~ m_pi^3. This is relevant for the design of future ensembles of lattice gauge-field configurations. Finally, the volume dependence of the pion and kaon masses are analyzed with two-flavor and three-flavor chiral perturbation theory.

The current constraints from lattice QCD on the existence of the H-dibaryon are discussed. With only two significant lattice QCD calculations of the H-dibaryon binding energy at approximately the same lattice spacing, the forms of the chiral and continuum extrapolations to the physical point are not determined. In this brief report, we consider the constraints on the H-dibaryon imposed by two simple chiral extrapolations. In both instances, the extrapolation to the physical pion mass allows for a bound H-dibaryon or a near-threshold scattering state. Further lattice QCD calculations are required to clarify this situation.

Low-energy baryon-baryon interactions are calculated in a high-statistics lattice QCD study on a single ensemble of anisotropic clover gauge-field configurations at a pion mass of m_π~ 390 MeV, a spatial volume of L^3 ~ (2.5 fm)^3, and a spatial lattice spacing of b~0.123 fm. Lüscher's method is used to extract nucleon-nucleon, hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon scattering phase shifts at one momentum from the one- and two-baryon ground-state energies in the lattice volume. The isospin-3/2 NΣinteractions are found to be highly spin-dependent, and the interaction in the ^3S_1 channel is found to be strong. In contrast, the NΛinteractions are found to be spin-independent, within the uncertainties of the calculation, consistent with the absence of one-pion-exchange. The only channel for which a negative energy-shift is found is ΛΛ, indicating that the ΛΛinteraction is attractive, as anticipated from model-dependent discussions regarding the H-dibaryon. The NN scattering lengths are found to be small, clearly indicating the absence of any fine-tuning in the NN-sector at this pion mass. This is consistent with our previous Lattice QCD calculation of NN interactions. The behavior of the signal-to-noise ratio in the baryon-baryon correlation functions, and in the ratio of correlation functions that yields the ground-state energy splitting is explored. In particular, focus is placed on the window of time slices for which the signal-to-noise ratio does not degrade exponentially, as this provides the opportunity to extract quantitative information about multi-baryon systems.

Using the two-flavor chiral expansion for extrapolation, the pion-hyperon scattering lengths are found to be $a_{π^+Σ^+}=-0.197\pm0.017$ fm, and $a_{π^+Ξ^0}=-0.098\pm0.017$ fm, where the comprehensive error includes statistical and systematic uncertainties.

We present the results of an exploratory Lattice QCD calculation of three-baryon systems through a high-statistics study of one ensemble of anisotropic clover gauge-field configurations with a pion mass of m_π~ 390 MeV. Because of the computational cost of the necessary contractions, we focus on correlation functions generated by interpolating-operators with the quantum numbers of the $Ξ^0Ξ^0 n$ system, one of the least demanding three baryon systems in terms of the number of contractions. We find that the ground state of this system has an energy of E_{Ξ^0Ξ^0n}= 3877.9\pm 6.9\pm 9.2\pm3.3 MeV corresponding to an energy-shift due to interactions of δE_{Ξ^0Ξ^0n}=E_{Ξ^0Ξ^0n}-2M_{Ξ^0} -M_n=4.6\pm 5.0\pm 7.9\pm 4.2 MeV. There are a significant number of time-slices in the three-baryon correlation function for which the signal-to-noise ratio is only slowly degrading with time. This is in contrast to the exponential degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio that is observed at larger times, and is due to the suppressed overlap of the source and sink interpolating-operators that are associated with the variance of the three-baryon correlation function onto the lightest eigenstates in the lattice volume
(mesonic systems). As one of the motivations for this area of exploration is the calculation of the structure and reactions of light nuclei, we also present initial results for a system with the quantum numbers of the triton (pnn). This present work establishes a path to multi-baryon systems, and shows that Lattice QCD calculations of the properties and interactions of systems containing four and five baryons are now within sight.

We present the results of high-statistics calculations of correlation functions generated with single-baryon interpolating operators on an ensemble of dynamical anisotropic gauge-field configurations generated by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration using a tadpole-improved clover fermion action and Symanzik-improved gauge action. A total of 292,500 sets of measurements are made using 1194 gauge configurations of size 20^3 x 128 with an anisotropy parameter ξ= b_s/b_t = 3.5, a spatial lattice spacing of b_s=0.1227\pm 0.0008 fm, and pion mass of m_π~ 390 MeV. Ground state baryon masses are extracted with fully quantified uncertainties that are at or below the ~0.2%-level in lattice units. The lowest-lying negative-parity states are also extracted albeit with a somewhat lower level of precision. In the case of the nucleon, this negative-parity state is above the Nπthreshold and, therefore, the isospin-1/2 πN s-wave scattering phase-shift can be extracted using Luescher's method. The disconnected contributions to this process are included indirectly in the gauge-field configurations and do not require additional calculations. The signal-to-noise ratio in the various correlation functions is explored and is found to degrade exponentially faster than naive expectations on many time-slices. This is due to backward propagating states arising from the anti-periodic boundary conditions imposed on the quark-propagators in the time-direction. We explore how best to distribute computational resources between configuration generation and propagator measurements in order to optimize the extraction of single baryon observables.

The ground-state energies of systems containing up to twelve $π^+$'s in a spatial volume V ~ (2.5 fm)^3 are computed in dynamical, mixed-action lattice QCD at a lattice spacing of ~ 0.125 fm for four different values of the light quark masses. Clean signals are seen for each ground state, allowing for a precise extraction of both the $π^+π^+$ scattering length and $π^+π^+π^+$-interaction from a correlated analysis of systems containing different numbers of $π^+$'s. This extraction of the $π^+π^+$ scattering length is consistent with than that from the $π^+π^+$-system alone. The large number of systems studied here significantly strengthens the arguments presented in our earlier work and unambiguously demonstrates the presence of a low energy $π^+π^+π^+$-interaction. The equation of state of a $π^+$ gas is investigated using our numerical results and the density dependence of the isospin chemical potential for these systems agrees well with the theoretical expectations of leading order chiral perturbation theory. The chemical potential is found to receive a substantial contribution from the $π^+π^+π^+$-interaction at the lighter pion masses. An important technical aspect of this work is the demonstration of the necessity of performing propagator contractions in greater than double precision to extract the correct results.

We begin by analyzing the Martingale Central Limit Theorem to find a sufficient condition for the limit distribution to be non-Gaussian. We note that the theorem implies that the scaling index $ζ$ is 1/2. For corresponding continuous time processes, it is shown that the probability density function $W(x;t)$ satisfies the Fokker-Planck equation. Possible forms for the diffusion coefficient are given, and related to $W(x,t)$. Finally, we show how a time-series can be used to distinguish between these variable diffusion processes and Lévy dynamics.

The basic assumptions are (1) that there is a "consensus" value associated with a stock, and (2) that the rate of diffusion depends on the deviation of the stock price from the consensus value. We find an analytical expression for the distribution of returns in terms of the diffusion rate, when the consensus value is assumed to be fixed in time. The analytical solution is shown to match computed histograms in two simple cases. Differences that result when the consensus value is allowed to change with time are presented qualitative explanations.
