The temperature averaged entropy change (TEC) with 3~K span equals 3.2, 7.0, 12.6, 12.2 and 11.8~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}\cdot$K$^{-1}$ for RE = Tb-Tm, respectively. The relative cooling power (RCP) and refrigerant capacity (RC) are equal to respectively 258 and 215~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}$ in Tb$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$, 498 and 325~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}$ in Dy$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$, 489 and 403~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}$ in Ho$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$, 403 and 314~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}$ in Er$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$ and 234 and 184~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}$ in Tm$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$. The magnetocaloric properties of RE$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$ are comparable to those of other known magnetocaloric materials, which show good magnetocaloric performance at low temperatures. Among RE$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$, the highest values of parameters characterizing the magnetocaloric effect are found for RE = Ho and Er. Furthermore, for fixed RE element, the RE$_{5}$Pd$_2$In$_4$ compound displays the highest RCP and RC values when compared to those of its isostructural RE$_{5}$T$_2$In$_4$ (T = Ni, Pt) analogues.

The RE$_{5}$Pt$_2$In$_4$ (RE = Gd-Tm) rare earth compounds have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as by DC and AC magnetometric measurements. The compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic crystal structure of the Lu$_{5}$Ni$_2$In$_4$-type (\textit{Pbam} space group, No.~55). With decreasing temperature the intermetallics undergo a transition from para- to ferro-/ferri- (RE~=~Gd, Tb, Ho, Er) or antiferromagnetic state (RE~=~Tm). In case of Dy$_{5}$Pt$_2$In$_4$, the ferromagnetic state is reached through an intermediate antiferromagnetic order present in a limited temperature range. The critical temperatures of magnetic ordering range from 4.1~K (RE~=~Tm) up to 108~K (RE~=~Tb). For the majority of investigated compounds, a cascade of additional magnetic transitions is found below the respective critical temperatures of magnetic ordering. The magnetic moments are found solely on the rare earth atoms, while the moments of the remaining Pt and In atoms are absent or are too small to be detected while accompanied by the strong rare earth's moments. The magnetocaloric (MCE) performance of RE$_{5}$T$_2$In$_4$ (RE~=~Gd-Tm) is found quite good, especially while taking into account the compounds with RE = Ho and Er. Maximum magnetic entropy change ($-ΔS_M^{max}$) reaches 11.8 (RE~=~Ho) or 11.4~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}\cdot$K$^{-1}$ (RE~=~Er) under magnetic flux density change of 0-9~T. Under the same conditions, the relative cooling power (RCP) and refrigerant capacity (RC) equal 607 and 495~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}$ (RE~=~Ho) or 434 and 341~J$\cdot$kg$^{-1}$ (RE~=~Er).

Crystal and magnetic structures of $R_2$Ni$_2$In ($R$ = Tb and Ho) have been studied by powder neutron diffraction at low temperatures. The compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic crystal structure of the Mn$_2$AlB$_2$-type. At low temperatures, the magnetic moments localized solely on the rare earth atoms form antiferromagnetic structures. The Tb magnetic moments, equal to 8.65(6) $μ_B$ and parallel to the $c$-axis, form a collinear magnetic structure described by the propagation vector $\boldsymbol{k} = [\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}]$. This magnetic structure is stable up to the Néel temperature equal to 40 K. For Ho$_2$Ni$_2$In a complex, temperature-dependent magnetic structure is detected. In the temperature range 3.5-8.6 K, an incommensurate magnetic structure, described by the propagation vector $\boldsymbol{k}_1 = [0.76, 0, 0.52]$ is observed, while in the temperature interval 2.2-3.1 K the magnetic order is described by two propagation vectors, namely, $\boldsymbol{k}_2 = [\frac{5}{6}, 0.16, \frac{1}{2}]$ and its third harmonics $3\boldsymbol{k}_2 = [\frac{5}{2}, 0.48, \frac{3}{2}]$. Below 2 K, a coexistence of all magnetic structures detected at higher temperatures is observed. For all magnetic phases, the Ho magnetic moments are parallel to the $c$-axis. The low temperature heat capacity data confirm a first order transition near 3 K.

The samples have been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (in function of temperature) and ac magnetic measurements (in function of temperature and applied hydrostatic pressure up to 12 kbar). On the basis of the experimental data, the $(p,T)$ phase diagrams have been determined. For the low Cu content ($x=0.05$, 0.10 and 0.15), the compounds show a martensitic transition between the low-temperature orthorhombic crystal structure of the TiNiSi-type (space group: $Pnma$) and the high-temperature hexagonal structure of the Ni$_2$In-type (space group: $P6_3/mmc$). For the high Cu content ($x=0.22$ and 0.35) only the hexagonal structure is observed. All compounds undergo a transition from para- to ferromagnetic state with decreasing temperature (in case of $x=0.22$ through an intermediate antiferromagnetic phase). The para- to ferromagnetic transition is fully coupled with the martensitic one for $x=0.05$ at the intermediate pressure range (6 kbar $\le p \le 8$ kbar). Partial magnetostructural coupling is observed for $x=0.10$ at ambient pressure. The Curie temperature at ambient pressure decreases from 313 K for $x=0.05$ (in the orthorhombic phase) to about 250 K for the remaining compounds (in the hexagonal phase). For the Co$_{0.85}$Cu$_{0.15}$MnGe compound, entropy change associated with the martensitic transition has been calculated using Clausius-Clapeyron equation.

Structural and magnetic properties of the CoMn$_{0.88}$Cu$_{0.12}$Ge compound have been investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) accompanied with investigation of magnetic properties under applied hydrostatic pressure up to 12 kbar. It has been found that the orthorhombic crystal structure of the TiNiSi-type, which is dominant at low temperatures, turns into the hexagonal Ni$_2$In-type one, slightly above 200 K. The structural transition is of the first-order type as confirmed by presence of distinct thermal hysteresis exceeding 20 K. The ac magnetic measurements indicate a ferromagnetic order below the Curie temperature $T_C$ of 238 K, followed by additional anomaly at lower temperatures - the latter one being related to the structural transition. Application of hydrostatic pressure leads to temperature separation of the purely magnetic transition, whose Curie temperature $T_C$ slowly increases with applied pressure, and the magnetostructural transition characterized by critical temperature showing much rapid decrease with increasing pressure. Comparison of the DSC data for the investigated compound and the isostructural CoMn$_{0.95}$Cu$_{0.05}$Ge one has made it possible to determine both the structural and magnetic components of entropy change.

We report systematic studies of CeCu$_9$In$_2$, which appears to be a new Kondo lattice system. Electrical resistivity exhibits a logarithmic law characteristic of Kondo systems with a broad maximum at $T_{coh}\approx$45 K and it obeys the Fermi liquid theory at low temperature. Specific heat of CeCu$_9$In$_2$ is well described by the Einstein and Debye models with electronic part at high temperature. Fitting of the Schottky formula to low temperature 4f contribution to specific heat yielded crystal field splitting of 50.2 K between a doublet and quasi-quartet. The Schotte-Schotte model estimates roughly Kondo temperature as $T_K\approx$5 K, but does not reproduce well the data due to a sharp peak at 1.6 K. This structure should be attributed to a phase transition, a nature of which is possibly antiferromagnetic. Specific heat is characterized with increased Sommerfeld coefficient estimated as $γ\approx$132 mJ/(mole$\cdot$K$^2$). Spectra of the valence band, which have been collected with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), show a peak at binding energy$\approx$250 meV, which originates from the Ce 4f electrons and is related to the 4f$^1$$_{7/2}$ final state. Extracted 4f contribution to the spectral function exhibits also the enhancement of intensity in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Satellite structure of the Ce 3d levels spectra measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been analyzed within the framework of the Gunnarsson-Schönhammer theory. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (FPLO method with LDA+U approach) delivered densities of states, band structures and Fermi surfaces for CeCu$_9$In$_2$ and LaCu$_9$In$_2$. The results indicate that Fermi surface nesting takes place in CeCu$_9$In$_2$.

We investigated CeNi9In2 compound, which has been considered as a mixed valence (MV) system. Electrical resistivity vs. temperature variation was analysed in terms of the model proposed by Freimuth for systems with unstable 4f shell. At low temperature the resistivity dependence is consistent with a Fermi liquid state with a contribution characteristic of electron-phonon interaction. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) studies of the valence band did not reveal a Kondo peak down to 14 K. A difference of the spectra obtained with photon energies of low and high photoionization cross sections for Ce 4f electrons indicated that 4f states are located mainly close to the Fermi energy. The peaks related to f_{5/2}^1 and f_{7/2}^1 final states cannot be resolved but form a plateau between -0.3 eV and the Fermi energy. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) studies were realized for the cerium 3d level. The analysis of XPS spectra within the Gunnarsson-Shönhammer theory yielded a hybridization parameter of 104 meV and non-integer f level occupation, being close to 3. Calculations of partial densities of states were realized by a full potential local orbital (FPLO) method. They confirm that the valence band is dominated by Ni 3d states and are in general agreement with the experiment except for the behavior of f-electrons.
