The hydrogen deuteride (HD) molecule is an important deuterium tracer in astrophysical studies. The atmospheres of gas giants are dominated by molecular hydrogen, and simultaneous observation of H$_2$ and HD lines provides reliable information on the D/H ratios on these planets. The reference spectroscopic parameters play a crucial role in such studies. Under thermodynamic conditions encountered in these atmospheres, the spectroscopic studies of HD require not only the knowledge of line intensities and positions but also accurate reference data on pressure-induced line shapes and shifts. Our aim is to provide accurate collision-induced line-shape parameters for HD lines that cover any thermodynamic conditions relevant to the atmospheres of giant planets, i.e., any relevant temperature, pressure, and perturbing gas (the H$_2$/He mixture) composition. We perform quantum-scattering calculations on a new highly accurate ab initio potential energy surface, and we use scattering S-matrices obtained this way to determine the collision-induced line-shape parameters. We use the cavity ring-down spectroscopy for validation of our theoretical methodology. We report accurate collision-induced line-shape parameters for the pure rotational R(0), R(1), and R(2) lines, the most relevant HD lines for the investigations of atmospheres of the giant planets. Besides the basic Voigt-profile collisional parameters (i.e. the broadening and shift parameters), we also report their speed dependences and the complex Dicke parameter, which can influence the effective width and height of the HD lines up to almost a factor of 2 for giant planet conditions. The sub-percent-level accuracy, reached in this work, considerably improves the previously available data. All the reported parameters are consistent with the HITRAN database format, hence allowing for the use of HAPI for generating the beyond-Voigt spectra of HD.

Recent advances regarding the interplay between ab initio calculations and metrology are reviewed, with particular emphasis on gas-based techniques used for temperature and pressure measurements. Since roughly 2010, several thermophysical quantities - in particular, virial and transport coefficients - can be computed from first principles without uncontrolled approximations and with rigorously propagated uncertainties. In the case of helium, computational results have accuracies that exceed the best experimental data by at least one order of magnitude and are suitable to be used in primary metrology. The availability of ab initio virial and transport coefficients contributed to the recent SI definition of temperature by facilitating measurements of the Boltzmann constant with unprecedented accuracy. Presently, they enable the development of primary standards of temperature in the range 2.5-552 K and pressure up to 7 MPa using acoustic gas thermometry, dielectric constant gas thermometry, and refractive index gas thermometry. These approaches will be reviewed, highlighting the effect of first-principles data on their accuracy. The recent advances in electronic structure calculations that enabled highly accurate solutions for the many-body interaction potentials and polarizabilities of atoms - particularly helium - will be described, together with the subsequent computational methods, most often based on quantum statistical mechanics and its path-integral formulation, that provide thermophysical properties and their uncertainties. Similar approaches for molecular systems, and their applications, are briefly discussed. Current limitations and expected future lines of research are assessed.

The QED contribution to the dipole polarizability of the $^4$He atom was computed, including the effect of finite nuclear mass. The computationally most challenging contribution of the second electric-field derivative of the Bethe logarithm was obtained using two different methods: the integral representation method of Schwartz and the sum-over-states approach of Goldman and Drake. The results of both calculations are consistent, although the former method turned out to be much more accurate. The obtained value of the electric-field derivative of the Bethe logarithm, equal to $0.048\,557\,2(14)$ in atomic units, confirms the small magnitude of this quantity found in the only previous calculation [G. Łach, B. Jeziorski, and K. Szalewicz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 233001 (2004)], but differs from it by about 5\%. The origin of this difference is explained. The total QED correction of the order of α 3 in the fine-structure constant α amounts to 30.6671(1)$\cdot 10^{-6}$, including the 0.1822$\cdot 10^{-6}$ contribution from the electric-field derivative of the Bethe logarithm and the 0.01112(1)$\cdot 10^{-6}$ correction for the finite nuclear mass, with all values in atomic units. The resulting theoretical value of the molar polarizability of helium-4 is $0.517\,254\,08(5)\,$cm$^3$/mol with the error estimate dominated by the uncertainty of the QED corrections of order $α^4$ and higher. Our value is in agreement with but an order of magnitude more accurate than the result $0.517\, 254\, 4(10)\,$cm$^3$/mol of the most recent experimental determination [C. Gaiser and B. Fellmuth, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 123203 (2018)].

The pair potential for helium has been computed with accuracy improved by an order of magnitude relative to the best previous determination. For the well region, its uncertainties are now below 1 millikelvin. The main improvement is due to the use of explicitly correlated wave functions at the nonrelativistic Born-Oppenheimer (BO) level of theory. The diagonal BO and the relativistic corrections were obtained from large full configuration interaction calculations. The nonadiabatic perturbation theory was used to predict the properties of the halo state of helium dimer. Its binding energy and the average value of interatomic distance are found to be 138.9(5) neV and 47.13(8) Å. The binding energy agrees with its first experimental determination of 151.9(13.3) neV [Zeller et al., PNAS 113, 14651 (2016)].

Future metrology standards will be partly based on physical quantities computed from first principles rather than measured. In particular, a new pressure standard can be established if the dynamic polarizability of helium can be determined from theory with an uncertainty smaller than 0.2 ppm. We present calculations of the frequency-dependent part of this quantity including relativistic effects with full account of leading nuclear recoil terms and using highly optimized explicitly correlated basis sets. A particular emphasis is put on uncertainty estimates. At the He-Ne laser wavelength of 632.9908 nm, the computed polarizability value of 1.391 811 41 a.u. has uncertainty of 0.1 ppm that is two orders of magnitude smaller than those of the most accurate polarizability measurements. We also obtained an accurate expansion of the helium refractive index in powers of density.

A non-LTE radiative transfer treatment of cis-methyl formate (HCOOCH3) rotational lines is presented for the first time using a set of theoretical collisional rate coefficients. These coefficients have been computed in the temperature range 5-30 K by combining coupled-channel scattering calculations with a high accuracy potential energy surface for HCOOCH3-He. The results are compared to observations toward the Sagittarius B2(N) molecular cloud using the publicly available PRIMOS survey from the Green Bank Telescope. A total of 49 low-lying transitions of methyl formate, with upper levels below 25 K, are identified. These lines are found to probe a presumably cold (~30 K), moderately dense (~1e4 cm-3) and extended region surrounding Sgr B2(N). The derived column density of ~4e14 cm-2 is only a factor of ~10 larger than the column density of the trans conformer in the same source. Provided that the two conformers have the same spatial distribution, this result suggests that strongly non-equilibrium processes must be involved in their synthesis. Finally, our calculations show that all detected emission lines with a frequency below 30 GHz are (collisionally pumped) weak masers amplifying the continuum of Sgr B2(N). This result demonstrates the importance and generality of non-LTE effects in the rotational spectra of complex organic molecules at centimetre wavelengths.

A new CO-H_2 potential energy surface is employed and its quality is assessed by comparison with explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-R12 calculations. Rate constants for rotational levels of CO up to 5 and temperatures in the range 5-70 K are deduced. The new potential is found to have a strong influence on the resonance structure of the cross sections at very low collision energies. As a result, the present rates at 10 K differ by up to 50% with those obtained by \citet{flower01} on a previous, less accurate, potential energy surface.
