Second-order nonlinear optics is the base for a large variety of devices aimed at the active manipulation of light. However, physical principles restrict its occurrence to non-centrosymmetric, anisotropic matter. This significantly limits the number of base materials exhibiting nonlinear optics. Here, we show that embedding chromophores in an array of conical channels 13 nm across in monolithic silica results in mesoscopic anisotropic matter and thus in a hybrid material showing second-harmonic generation (SHG). This non-linear optics is compared to the one achieved in corona-poled polymer films containing the identical chromophores. It originates in confinement-induced orientational order of the elongated guest molecules in the nanochannels. This leads to a non-centrosymmetric dipolar order and hence to a non-linear light-matter interaction on the sub-wavelength, single-pore scale. Our study demonstrates that the advent of large-scale, self-organised nanoporosity in monolithic solids along with confinement-controllable orientational order of chromophores at the single-pore scale provides a reliable and accessible tool to design materials with a nonlinear meta-optics.

Abstract:
A spin current - a flow of spin angular momentum - can be carried either by spin polarised free electrons or by magnons, the quanta of a moving collective oscillation of localised electron spins - a spin wave. Traditionally, it was assumed, that a spin wave in a magnetic film with spin-sink-free surfaces can transfer energy and angular momentum only along its propagation direction. In this work, u…

In this work, using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy in combination with a theory of dipole-exchange spin-wave spectra, we show that in obliquely magnetized free magnetic films the in-plane propagation of spin waves is accompanied by a transverse spin current along the film normal without any corresponding transverse transport of energy.

Bismuth substituted lutetium iron garnet (BLIG) films exhibit larger Faraday rotation, and have a higher Curie temperature than yttrium iron garnet. We have observed magnetic stripe domains and measured domain widths of 1.4 μμm using Fourier domain polarization microscopy, Faraday rotation experiments yield a coercive field of 5 Oe. These characterizations form the basis of micromagnetic simulations that allow us to estimate and compare spin wave excitations in BLIG films. We observed that these films support thermal magnons with a precessional frequency of 7 GHz with a line width of 400 MHz. Further, we studied the dependence of precessional frequency on the externally applied magnetic field. Brillouin light scattering experiments and precession frequencies predicted by simulations show similar trend with increasing field.

Featuring low heat dissipation, devices based on spin-wave logic gates promise to comply with increasing future requirements in information processing. In this work, we present the experimental realization of a majority gate based on the interference of spin waves in an Yttrium-Iron-Garnet-based waveguiding structure. This logic device features a three-input combiner with the logic information encoded in the phase of the spin waves. We show that the phase of the output signal represents the majority of the phase of the input signals. A switching time of about 10 ns in the prototype device provides evidence for the ability of sub-nanosecond data processing in future down-scaled devices.
