The Seebeck coefficient is examined for two-dimensional Dirac electrons in the three-quarter filled organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 under hydrostatic pressure, where the Seebeck coefficient is proportional to the ratio of the thermoelectric conductivity to the electrical conductivity. We present an improved tight-binding model in two dimensions with transfer energies determined from first-principles density functional theory calculations with an experimentally determined crystal structure. The temperatutre dependence of the Seebeck coefficient is calculated by adding impurity and electron-phonon scatterings. Noting a zero-gap state due to the Dirac cone, which results in a competition from contributions between the conduction and valence bands, we show positive S_x and S_y at finite temperatures and analyze them in terms of spectral conductivity. The relevance of the calculated S_x (perpendicular to the molecular stacking axis) to the experiment is discussed.

As a result, $σ_{x}$ becomes much larger than $σ_{y}$, where $σ_y$ and $σ_x$ are diagonal conductivities parallel and perpendicular to a stacking axis of molecules, respectively. With increasing temperature ($T$), $σ_x$ takes a broad maximum because of e-p scattering and $σ_y$ remains almost constant. The ratio $σ_x/σ_y$ is analyzed in terms of the band structure. Such an exotic conductivity of STF is compared with that of an experiment showing a good correspondence. Finally, $σ_x/σ_y$ values of ET and BETS(= bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene) are shown to demonstrate the dissimilarity with STF.

Effect of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on Dirac electrons in the organic conductor $α$-(BETS)$_2$I$_3$ [BETS = bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene] has been examined by calculating electric conductivity and spin magnetic susceptibility. A tight-binding (TB) model with real and imaginary transfer energies is derived using first-principles density-functional theory method. The conductivity without the SOC depends on both anisotropies of the velocity of the Dirac cone and the tiling of the cone. Such conductivity is suppressed by the SOC, which gives rise to the imaginary part of the transfer energy. Due to the SOC, we find at low temperatures that the reduction of the conductivity becomes large and that the anisotropy of the conductivity is reduced. A nearly constant conductivity at high temperatures is obtained by an electron--phonon (e--p) scattering. Further, the property of the Dirac cone is examined for the spin susceptibility, which is mainly determined by the density of states (DOS). The result is compared with the case of the organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene], which provides the Dirac cone without the SOC. The relevance to experiments is discussed.

The electric conductivity of Dirac electrons in the organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ [BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] under pressure has been examined using a two-dimensional tight-binding (TB) model with both impurity and electron--phonon (e--p) scatterings. We study an anomalous temperature dependence of the conductivity, which shows a crossover from $σ_{x} < σ_{y}$ at low temperatures [region (I)] to $σ_{x} > σ_{y}$ at high temperatures [region (II)]. $σ_y$ and $σ_x$ are diagonal conductivities parallel and perpendicular to a stacking axis of molecules, respectively. The effect of Dirac cone tilting is dominant in region (I), whereas the anisotropy of the velocity of the Dirac cone is dominant in region (II). Such behavior is further examined by calculating the deviation of principal axes due to the off-diagonal conductivity $σ_{xy}$ and a nearly constant conductivity at high temperatures due to the e--p scattering, which is the extension of the previous result of the simple two-band model [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 98},161205 (2018)], where the electric transport by the impurity scattering exhibits the noticeable interplay of the Dirac cone and the phonon scattering, resulting in a maximum of the conductivity with increasing temperature. The conductor shows a nodal line semimetal where the band crossing of HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) and LUMO (Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital) provides a loop of Dirac points located close to the Fermi energy followed by the density of states (DOS) similar to that of two-dimensional Dirac cone. Using a tight-binding (TB) model [arXiv:2008.09277], which was obtained using the crystal structure observed from a recent X ray diffraction experiment under pressure, it is shown that the obtained conductivity explains reasonably the anomalous behavior in [Pd(dddt)$_2$] exhibiting almost temperature independent resistivity at finite temperatures. This paper demonstrates a crucial role of the acoustic phonon scattering at finite temperatures in the electric conductivity of Dirac electrons. The present theoretical results of conductivity are compared with those of experiments.

We examined high-pressure electronic structure of a single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)$_2$] (dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate) at room temperature, based on the crystal structure determined by single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at 5.9 GPa. The monoclinic unit cell contains four molecules that form two crystallographically independent molecular layers. A tight-binding model of 8 $\times$ 8 matrix Hamiltonian gives an electronic structure as a Dirac electron system. The Dirac point describes a loop within the first Brillouin zone, and a nodal line semimetal is obtained. The noticeable property of the Dirac cone with a linear dispersion is shown by calculating density of states (DOS). The Dirac cone in this system is associated with the crossing of HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) and LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) bands, which originates from the direct interaction between different molecular layers. This is a newly found mechanism in addition to the indirect one [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., {\bf 86}, 064705 (2017)]. The Dirac points emerge as a line, when the HOMO and LUMO bands meet on the surface and the HOMO-LUMO couplings are absent. Such a mechanism is verified using a reduced model of 4 $\times$ 4 matrix Hamiltonian. The deviation of the band energy ($δE$) at the Dirac point from the Fermi level is very small ($δE < $ 0.4meV). The nodal line is examined by calculating the parity of the occupied band eigen states at TRIM (Time Reversal Invariant Momentum) showing that the topological number is 1.

The spin-orbit coupling gives rise to an exotic insulating state with an indirect band gap of about 2 meV. To elucidate the band structure of $α$-STF$_2$I$_3$, a theoretical method based on the observed atomic parameters at 296 K and 1 bar has been proposed. The results suggest that the STF salt should have a band structure with Dirac cones under ambient pressure and temperature, which should promote future experimental studies on this system.Using the extended Hückel method, we demonstrate that the Dirac points of $α$-STF$_2$I$_3$ are aligned to be symmetric with respect to a time reversal invariant momentum (TRIM). Such novel Dirac cones, where the energy difference between the conduction and valence bands has considerable anisotropy, are clarified in terms of the parity of the wavefunction at the TRIM. We propose the conductivity measurement on the present $α$-STF$_2$I$_3$, which is expected to show a large anisotropy as a characteristic of the present Dirac electrons.

However, the Dirac cones on the nodal line are fully reproduced only at symmetric points. In the present paper, we show that our improved method well reproduces reasonable behaviors of all the Dirac cones and a very small energy dispersion of 6~meV among the Dirac points. Such strange behavior of $σ(T)$ is ascribed to an exotic mechanism of phonon scattering, whose momentum space is strongly reduced in the presence of a Dirac cone. For large do**, $σ$ decreases due to the interplay of the Fermi surface and the phonon. The Dirac cone exists within an energy of 0.01 eV between the conduction and valence bands. The magnetic response function is calculated by taking account of the long-range Coulomb interaction and electron do**. Calculating the interaction within the first order in the perturbation, the chemical potential is determined self-consistently, and the self-energy and vertex corrections are taken to satisfy the Ward identity. The site-dependent shift is calculated at low temperatures of 0.0002 < T < 0.002 (T is temperature in the unit of eV) by correctly treating the wave function of the Dirac cone. At lower (higher) temperatures the self-energy (vertex) correction of the shift at all sites except for B is dominant and the sign is negative (positive), while the sign of the correction at the B site is always negative. For moderate do**, the shift as a function of T takes a minimum. The relevance of the shift to the experiment is discussed.

Dirac electrons, which have been found in the single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)_2] under pressure, are examined by calculating the conductivity and resistivity in terms of a tight-binding model for several pressures of P GPa, which give a nodal line semimetal or insulator. The temperature (T) dependence of the conductivity shows that the conductivity increases linearly under pressure at low T due to the Dirac cone but stays almost constant at high T. Further, at lower pressures, the conductivity is suppressed due to an unconventional gap, which is examined by calculating the resistivity. The resistivity exhibits a pseudogap-like behavior even in the case described by the Dirac cone. Such behavior originates from a novel role of the nodal line semimetal followed by a pseudogap that is different from a band gap. The present result reasonably explains the resistivity observed in the experiment.

Dirac electrons in a single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)$_2$] under pressure have been examined using a tight-binding model which consists of HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) and LUMO (Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital) functions in four molecules per unit cell. The Dirac cone between the conduction and valence bands comes from the property that HOMO has ungerade symmetry and LUMO has gerade symmetry. The Dirac point forms a loop in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, which is symmetric with respect to the plane of $k_y$ = 0 where $k_y$ is the intralayer momentum along the molecular stacking direction, i.e., with the largest (HOMO-HOMO, LUMO-LUMO) transfer energy. The parity at TRIM (time reversal invariant momentum) is calculated using the inversion symmetry around the lattice point of the crystal. It is shown that such an exotic Dirac electron is understood from the parity of the wave function at the TRIM and also from an effective Hamiltonian.

We investigate a longitudinal conductivity of a two-dimensional relativistic electron gas with a tilted Dirac cone in magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the conductivity behaves differently in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the tilting of the cone. At high magnetic fields the conductivity at non-zero Landau levels in the direction perpendicular to the tilting modifies non-trivially, in contrast to the parallel case. At zero temperature the crossover of the conductivity at the Dirac point from high to low magnetic field is studied numerically. It is found that that the tilting produces anisotropy of the conductivity which changes with the magnetic field which is different from the anisotropy coming from the Fermi velocity. We also discuss the conductivity at finite temperatures and finite magnetic fields which can be directly compared with the experiments in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ organic conductor. We find that the tilting does not affect so much the magnetic-filed dependence of the conductivity except for the prefactor. We discuss the interpretation of recent experimental data and make some proposals to detect the effect of the tilting in future experiments.

Dirac electrons with a zero-gap state (ZGS) in organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ result from a fine tuning of the seven nearest neighbors transfer integrals ($a_1, a_2, a_3, b_1, b_2, b_3, b_4$) between the four molecules of the unit cell. In this work we show that for given moduli $|a_1|,...|b_4|$, the possibility of having Dirac electron with a ZGS at $3/4$ (or $1/4$) filling strongly depends on the specific configurations of signs of the seven transfer integral. More precisely it is possible to classify the sign configurations into essentially four classes determined by $χ_{a}={\rm sign} (a_2a_3)$ and $χ_b={\rm sign} (b_1b_2b_3b_4)$. Using extended numerics, we show that for both weak and large inhomogeneity in the moduli, the class $(χ_a,χ_b)=(-,-)$ is the most favorable to find Dirac electrons with ZGS at $3/4$ (or $1/4$) filling. For the class $(χ_a,χ_b)=(+,+)$ in the opposite case, we never found any ZGS at either $1/4$ or $3/4$ filling. The last two classes \suzum{given by} $(χ_a,χ_b)=(+,-)$ and $(χ_a,χ_b)=(-,+)$ corresponding to an intermediate situation; they allow for ZGS at $3/4$ (resp. $1/4$) filling but are much less favorable than class $(χ_a,χ_b)=(-,-)$. As a matter of fact, all previous numerical studies of Dirac electrons and ZGS in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ correspond to class $(χ_a,χ_b)=(-,+)$.

By examining organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 which is described by a nearest neighbors tight-binding model it is shown that because of inversion symmetry, each component of a wave function (WF) exhibits nodal lines (NLs) in the Brillouin zone. In the absence of any band crossing, each NL connects two time reversal invariant momenta (TRIM) as partners. In the presence of a pair of Dirac points (band crossing), for each band that crosses and for each WF component there is a NL that connects the pair of Dirac points via a TRIM without partner. This second kind of NL leads to a discontinuous sign change for non vanishing components of the WF. Such a property is at the origin of the +/- pi Berry phase accumulated on a contour integral encircling one Dirac point. The results are examplified by numerical calculation of WFs components for the above conductor with a 3/4 filled band.

We reexamine the existence and stability conditions of Dirac points between valence and conduction bands of 3/4 filled $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ conducting plane. We consider the usual nearest neigbhor tight binding model with the seven transfer energies that depend on the applied pressure. Owing to the four distinct molecules (A, A', B, C) per unit cell of the Bravais lattice, the corresponding Bloch Hamiltonian is a $4\times4$ matrix ${\cal H}({\bm k})$ for each wave vector $\mathbf{k}$ of the Brillouin zone. In most previous works the study of Dirac points was achieved through direct numerical diagonalization of matrix ${\cal H}({\bm k})$. In this work we develop a novel analytical approach which allows to analyze the existence and stability conditions of Dirac points from the knowledge of their merging properties at time reversal points. Within this approach we can discuss thoroughly the role of each transfer integrals and demonstrate that inversion symmetry is convenient but not necessary.

We re-examine the wave function of two-dimensional massless Dirac electron in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 consisting of four molecules A, A', B and C in a unit cell, using a tight-binding model. We find zerolines in the Brillouin zone, on which the component of the wave function becomes zero for B or C sites. The zerolines, which are bounded by two Dirac points at k0 and pass through the M- or Y-points, result in a fact that the density of states of the B site exhibits no the Van Hove singularity near the energy of the Dirac points. By taking account of the on-site Coulomb interaction within the random phase approximation, we examine the spin fluctuation in order to investigate properties of the nuclear magnetic resonance for temperatures T > 50K. In the region for 100 < T < 300K, it is shown that the Knight sift for B-site monotonously decreases with decreasing temperature, owing to lack of the Van Hove singularity, while it shows a maximum for the other sites (A, A' and C sites). In the region for 50 < T < 100K, it is shown that the Knight sift is convex downward and the Korringa ratio increases with decreasing temperature for B-site. Such a behavior originates from the ferrimagnetic spin fluctuation related to the zerolines. These results are consistent with those of the nuclear magnetic resonance experiments.

We examine several properties of the Berry curvature for the organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ consisting of four bands, which exhibits a zero-gap state with Dirac cones. By adding a small potential acting on two molecular sites, which breaks the inversion symmetry, it is shown that the curvature for the Dirac particles displays a pair of peaks with opposite signs and that each peak increases with decreasing potential. The Berry curvature originating from the property of the wave function is analyzed using a reduced Hamiltonian with a 2x2 matrix based on the Luttinger-Kohn representation, which describes a pair of Dirac particles between the conduction band and the valence band. Two types of velocity fields in the reduced Hamiltonian, whose vector product gives the Berry curvature, rotate around the Dirac point as a vortex. It is also shown that the other bands exhibit another pair of peaks of Dirac particles with a tendency toward merging.

We re-examine the band structure of the stripe charge ordered state of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure by using an extended Hubbard model within the Hartree mean-field theory. By increasing pressure, we find a topological transition from a conventional insulator with a single-minimum in the dispersion relation at the M-point in the Brillouin zone, towards a new phase which exhibits a double-minimum. This transition is characterized by the appearance of a pair of Dirac electrons with a finite mass. Using the Luttinger-Kohn representation at the M-point, it is shown that such a variation of the band structure can be described by an effective $2 \times 2$ low energy Hamiltonian with a single driving parameter. The topological nature of this transition is confirmed by the calculation of the Berry curvature which vanishes in the conventional phase and has a double peak structure with opposite signs in the new phase. We compare the structure of this transition with a simpler situation which occurs in two-component systems, like boron-nitride.

We examine zero-temperature one-particle spectral functions for the one-dimensional two-band spinless fermions with different velocities and general forward-scattering interactions. By using the bosonization technique and diagonalizing the model to two Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid Hamiltonians, we obtain general expressions for the spectral functions which are given in terms of the Appell hypergeometric functions. For the case of identical two-band fermions, corresponding to the SU(2) symmetric spin-1/2 fermions with repulsive interactions, the spectral functions can be expressed in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions and are shown to recover the double-peak structure suggesting the well-known "spin-charge" separation. By tuning the difference in velocities for the two-band fermions, we clarify the crossover in spectral functions from the "spin-charge" separation to the decoupled fermions. We discuss the relevance of our results to the spin-1/2 Hubbard model under a magnetic field which can be mapped onto two-band spinless fermions.

First, by focusing on the isolated molecule, we determine the parameters for the model Hamiltonian so as to reproduce the CI Hamiltonian matrix. Next, we extend the analysis to two neighboring molecule pairs in the crystal and we perform similar calculations to evaluate the inter-molecular interactions. From the resulting tight-binding parameters, we analyze the band structure to confirm that two bands overlap and mix in together, supporting the multi-band feature. Furthermore, using a fragment decomposition, we derive the effective model based on the fragment MOs and show that the staking TTM-TTP molecules can be described by the zig-zag two-leg ladder with the inter-molecular transfer integral being larger than the intra-fragment transfer integral within the molecule. The inter-site interactions between the fragments follow a Coulomb law, supporting the fragment decomposition strategy.

Electrons in solids are characterized by the energy bands, which indicate that electrons are considered to be "elementary particles" with specific effective masses and g-factors reflecting features of each solid. There are cases where these particles obey dispersion relationship similar to those of Dirac electrons. Examples include graphite and bismuth both of which are known for many years, together with graphene, a single layer of graphite, recently addressed intensively after its realization. Another recent example is a molecular solid, alpha-ET2I3, which is described by an equation similar to Weyl equation with massless Dirac cones but the coordinate axis is tilted because of the location of cones at off-symmetry points. Orbital susceptibility of such Dirac electrons in graphite and bismuth has been known to have striking features not present in ordinary band electrons but resulting from the inter-band matrix elements of magnetic field. Results of theoretical studies on not only orbital susceptibility but also Hall effect of such Dirac electrons in molecular solids with tilting are introduced in this paper.

Using the extended multi-site Hubbard model, which contains four sites in a unit cell and the transfer energies obtained by the extended Hückel method, we calculate the linearized gap equation with the random phase approximation, to find novel order parameters of superconductivity due to several kinds of charge fluctuations induced by the anisotropic intersite repulsive interactions. For the singlet state, the order parameter with line nodes appears in the case of the strong charge fluctuation, while the order parameter with anisotropic gap suggested by Shimahara is reproduced in the spin fluctuation. The triplet state is also obtained for the wide parameter range of repulsive interactions due to a cooperation between charge and spin fluctuations.

The electronic structure of the molecular compound (TTM-TTP)I_3, which exhibits a peculiar intra-molecular charge ordering, has been studied using multi-configuration ab initio calculations. First we derive an effective Hubbard-type model based on the molecular orbitals (MOs) of TTM-TTP; we set up a two-orbital Hamiltonian for the two MOs near the Fermi energy and determine its full parameters: the transfer integrals, the Coulomb and exchange interactions. The tight-binding band structure obtained from these transfer integrals is consistent with the result of the direct band calculation based on density functional theory. Then, by decomposing the frontier MOs into two parts, i.e., fragments, we find that the stacked TTM-TTP molecules can be described by a two-leg ladder model, while the inter-fragment Coulomb energies are scaled to the inverse of their distances. This result indicates that the fragment picture that we proposed earlier [M.-L. Bonnet et al.: J. Chem. Phys. 132 (2010) 214705] successfully describes the low-energy properties of this compound.

The dynamical property is explored based on the analytical treatment of the particle-hole excitation. It is shown that the polarization function as the function of both the frequency and the momentum exhibits cusps and nonmonotonic structures. The polarization function depends not only on the magnitude but also the direction of the external momentum. These properties are characteristic of the tilted Dirac cone, and are contrast to the isotropic case of grapheme. Further, the results are applied to calculate the optical conductivity, the plasma frequency and the screening of Coulomb interaction, which are also strongly influenced by the tilted cone.

We study a mixture of one-dimensional bosons and spinless fermions at incommensurate filling using phenomenological bosonization and Green's functions techniques. We derive the relation between the parameters of the microscopic Hamiltonian and macroscopic observables. Galilean invariance results in extra constraints for the current current interactions. We obtain the exact exponents for the various response functions, and show that superfluid fluctuations are enhanced by the effective boson-fermion density-density interaction and suppressed by the effective boson-fermion current-current interaction. In the case of a bosonized model with purely density-density interaction, when the effective boson-fermion density-density interaction is weak enough, the superfluid exponent of the bosons has a non-monotonous variation with the ratio of the fermion velocity to the boson velocity. By contrast, density-wave exponent and the exponent for fermionic superfluidity are monotonous functions of the velocity ratio.

By dividing virtually the [TTM-TTP] molecule into three fragments, an effective model is constructed to rationalize the origin of this picture. In order to investigate the low-temperature symmetry breaking experimentally observed in the crystal, the electronic distribution in a pair of [TTM-TTP] molecules is analyzed from CASPT2 calculations. Our inspection supports and explains the speculated intramolecular charge ordering which is likely to give rise to low-energy magnetic properties.

The possible quantum Hall ferromagnet at a filling factor $ν=0$ is investigated for the zero-energy (N=0) Landau level of the two dimensional massless Dirac fermions in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure with tilted cones and a twofold valley degeneracy resulting from time-reversal symmetry. In the case of the Dirac cones without tilting, the long-range Coulomb interaction in the N=0 Landau level exhibits the SU(2) valley-pseudo-spin symmetry even to the order $O(a/l_{\rm H})$, in contrast to $N \ne 0$ Landau levels, where $a$ and $l_{\rm H}$ represent the lattice constant and the magnetic length, respectively. Such a characteristic comes from a fact that zero-energy states in a particular valley are restricted to only one of the spinor components, whereas the other spinor component is necessarily zero. In the case of the tilted Dirac cones as found in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, one obtains a non-zero value of the second component and then the ackscattering processes between valleys becomes non-zero. It is shown that this fact can lead to easy-plane pseudospin ferromagnetism (XY-type). In this case, the phase fluctuations of the order parameters can be described by the XY model leading to Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at lower temperature. In view of these theoretical results, experimental findings in resistivity of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ are discussed.

Superconductivity of quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors with a quarter-filled band is investigated using the two-loop renormalization group approach to the extended Hubbard model for which both the single electron hop** t_{\perp} and the repulsive interaction V_{\perp} perpendicular to the chains are included. For a four-patches Fermi surface with deviations to perfect nesting, we calculate the response functions for the dominant fluctuations and possible superconducting states. By increasing V_{\perp}, it is shown that a d-wave (singlet) to f-wave (triplet) superconducting state crossover occurs, and is followed by a vanishing spin gap. In the present paper, the characteristic of the ZGS is analyzed in detail and the electronic properties are examined in the vicinity of the contact point where the conduction and valence bands degenerate to form the zero-gap. The eigenvectors of the energy band have four components of respective sites, where two of them correspond to inequivalent sites and the other two correspond to equivalent sites. It is shown that the former exhibits an exotic momentum dependence around the contact point and the latter shows almost a constant dependence. The density of states of each site close to the Fermi point is calculated to demonstrate the temperature dependence of the local magnetic susceptibility and the local nuclear magnetic relaxation rate. We investigate the exotic Peierls state in the one-dimensional organic compound (EDO-TTF)_{2}X, wherein the Peierls transition is accompanied by the bending of molecules and also by a fourfold periodic array of charge disproportionation along the one-dimensional chain. Such a Peierls state, wherein the interplay between the electron correlation and the electron-phonon interaction takes an important role, is examined based on an extended Peierls-Holstein-Hubbard model that includes the alternation of the elastic energies for both the lattice distortion and the molecular deformation. The model reproduces the experimentally observed pattern of the charge disproportionation and there exists a metastable state wherein the energy takes a local minimum with respect to the lattice distortion and/or molecular deformation. Furthermore, we investigate the excited states for both the Peierls ground state and the metastable state by considering the soliton formation of electrons. It is shown that the soliton excitation from the metastable state costs energy that is much smaller than that of the Peierls state, where the former is followed only by the charge degree of freedom and the latter is followed by that of spin and charge. Based on these results, we discuss the exotic photoinduced phase found in (EDO-TTF)_{2}PF_{6}.

We examine a Peierls ground state and its competing metastable state in the one-dimensional quarter-filled Peierls-Hubbard model with the nearest-neighbor repulsive interaction V and the electron-phonon interaction (\propto 1/K with K being the elastic constant). From the mean-field approach, we obtain the phase diagram for the ground state on the plane of parameters V and K. The coexistent state of the spin-density wave and the charge ordering is realized for large V and K. With decreasing K, it exhibits a first-order phase transition to the unconventional Peierls state which is described by the bond-centered charge-density-wave state. In the large region of the Peierls ground state in the phase diagram, there exists the metastable state where the energy takes a local minimum with respect to the lattice distortion. On the basis of the present calculation, we discuss the photoinduced phase observed in the (EDO-TTF)_{2}PF_{6} compound.

We investigate the formation of density waves in the zero-gap state (ZGS) which has been found in the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ salt under the hydrostatic pressure. The ZGS exhibits the cone-like dispersion for both the conduction band and the valence band which degenerate each other at the two-dimensional wave vectors, $\pm\mib{k}_0$ forming a zero gap. By using the extended Hubbard model with repulsive interaction we calculate the onset temperature of the spin density wave (SDW) as a function of the interlayer electron hop**, which by itself does not break the cone-like dispersion. It is shown that the SDW with wave number $2\mib{k}_0$ is induced by the combined effect of the interaction, the inter-band excitation across the zero-gap and the interlayer hop**.

By applying an N_{perp}-chain renormalization group method at the two-loop level, we show how a metallic state emerges when both t_{perp 1} and t_{perp 2} exceed critical values. In the metallic phase, the quasiparticle weight becomes finite and develops a strong momentum dependence. We discuss the temperature dependence of the resistivity and the impact of our theory in the understanding of recent experiments on half-filled molecular conductors.

The role of interchain hop** in quasi-one-dimensional (Q-1D) electron systems is investigated by extending the Kadanoff-Wilson renormalization group of one-dimensional (1D) systems to Q-1D systems. This scheme is applied to the extended Hubbard model to calculate the temperature ($T$) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$. The calculation is performed by taking into account not only the logarithmic Cooper and Peierls channels, but also the non-logarithmic Landau and finite momentum Cooper channels, which give relevant contributions to the uniform response at finite temperatures. It is shown that the interchain hop**, $t_\perp$, reduces $χ(T)$ at low temperatures, while it enhances $χ(T)$ at high temperatures. This notable $t_\perp$ dependence is ascribed to the fact that $t_\perp$ enhances the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation at low temperatures, while it suppresses the 1D fluctuation at high temperatures. The result is at variance with the random-phase-approximation approach, which predicts an enhancement of $χ(T)$ by $t_\perp$ over the whole temperature range. The influence of both the long-range repulsion and the nesting deviations on $χ(T)$ is further investigated. We discuss the present results in connection with the data of $χ(T)$ in the (TMTTF)$_2X$ and (TMTSF)$_2X$ series of Q-1D organic conductors, and propose a theoretical prediction for the effect of pressure on magnetic susceptibility.

Further the conductivity being independent of $T$ in the ZGS state is examined in terms of Born approximation for the impurity cattering.

The ZGS state is the state in which a Dirac cone with the band spectrum of a linear dispersion exists around the Fermi point connecting an unoccupied (electron) band with an occupied (hole) band. The spectrum exhibits a large anisotropy in velocity, which depends on the direction from the Fermi point. By varying the magnitude of several transfer energies of a tight-binding model with four sites per unit cell, it is shown that the ZGS state exists in a wide pressure range, and is attributable to the large anisotropy of the transfer energies along the stacking axis.

The forward scattering on the same branch (the g_4-process) is examined together with the backward (g_1) and forward (g_2) scattering amplitudes on opposite branches.
In connection with lattice models, we show that χ(T) is strongly enhanced by the nearest-neighbor interaction, an enhancement that surpasses one of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction.
A connection between our predictions for χ(T) and experimental results for χ(T) in quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors is presented.

The anisotropic superconductivity and the density wave have been investigated by applying the Kadanoff-Wilson renormalization group technique to the quasi-one-dimensional system with finite-range interactions. It is found that a temperature (T) dependence of response functions is proportional to exp(1/T) in a wide region of temperature even within the one-loop approximation. Transition temperatures are calculated to obtain the phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional system, which is compared with that of the pure-one-dimensional system. Next-nearest neighbor interactions (V_2) induce large charge fluctuations, which suppress the d_{x^2 -y^2}-wave singlet superconducting (dSS) state and enhance the f-wave triplet superconducting (fTS) state. From this effect, the transition temperature of fTS becomes comparable to that of dSS for large V_2, so that field-induced f-wave triplet pairing could be possible. These features are discussed to comprehend the experiments on the (TMTSF)_2PF_6 salt.

We have investigated quantum critical behavior in the doped two-leg extended Hubbard ladder, by using a weak-coupling bosonization method. In the ground state, the dominant fluctuation changes from the conventional d-wave-like superconducting (SCd) state into density-wave states, with increasing nearest-neighbor repulsions and/or decreasing do** rate. The competition between the SCd state and the charge-density-wave state coexisting with the p-density-wave state becomes noticeable on the critical point, at which the gap for magnetic excitations vanishes. Based on the Majorana-fermion description of the effective theory, we calculate the temperature dependence of the magnetic response such as the spin susceptibility and the NMR relaxation rate, which exhibit unusual properties due to two kinds of spin excitation modes. On the quantum critical point, the spin susceptibility shows paramagnetic behavior with logarithmic corrections and the NMR relaxation rate also exhibits anomalous power-law behavior. We discuss the commensurability effect due to the umklapp scattering and relevance to the two-leg ladder compounds Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}.

It is shown that, for strong nearest-neighbor repulsions, the charge-density-wave state coexisting with the p-density-wave state becomes dominant fluctuation where spins form intrachain singlets. By increasing do** rate, we have also shown that the effects of the nearest-neighbor repulsions are reduced and the system exhibits a quantum phase transition into the d-wave-like (or rung-singlet) superconducting state. We derive the effective fermion theory which describes the critical properties of the transition point with the gapless excitation of magnon. We investigate the superconducting (SC) state in two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at a quarter-filling with the on-site repulsive interaction ($U$) and the nearest-neighbor one ($V$), which lead to the spin fluctuation and the charge fluctuation, respectively. The effect of the charge fluctuation on the onset of the SC state is calculated by estimating the pairing interaction within the random phase approximation. Solving the linearized Eliashberg equation with the anomalous self-energy as the function of both momentum and frequency, we examined the singlet SC state on the plane of $U$ and $V$ with the fixed temperature. We found a novel result that the SC state with the $d_{xy}$ symmetry retains for most parameters of $U$ and $V$, although the pairing interaction changes the sign from repulsive one into attractive one with increasing $V$. The reentrant transition as the function of temperature occurs close to the onset of the SC state.
