There is a variety of possible ways to tune the optical properties of 2D perovskites, though the mutual dependence between different tuning parameters hinders our fundamental understanding of their properties. In this work we attempt to address this issue for (C$_n$H$_{2n+1}$NH$_3$)$_2$PbI$_4$ (with n=4,6,8,10,12) using optical spectroscopy in high magnetic fields up to 67T. Our experimental results, supported by DFT calculations, clearly demonstrate that the exciton reduced mass increases by around 30% in the low temperature phase. This is reflected by a 2-3 fold decrease of the diamagnetic coefficient. Our studies show that the effective mass, which is an essential parameter for optoelectronic device operation, can be tuned by the variation of organic spacers and/or moderate cooling achievable using Peltier coolers. Moreover, we show that the complex absorption features visible in absorption/transmission spectra track each other in magnetic field providing strong evidence for the phonon related nature of the observed side bands.

Exciton fine structure splitting in semiconductors reflects the underlying symmetry of the crystal and quantum confinement. Since the latter factor strongly enhances the exchange interaction, most work has focused on nanostructures. Here, we report on the first observation of the bright exciton fine structure splitting in a bulk semiconductor crystal, where the impact of quantum confinement can be specifically excluded, giving access to the intrinsic properties of the material. Detailed investigation of the exciton photoluminescence and reflection spectra of a bulk methylammonium lead tribromide single crystal reveals a zero magnetic field splitting as large as $\sim 200μ$eV. This result provides an important starting point for the discussion of the origin of the large bright exciton fine structure observed in perovskite nanocrystals.

Franckeite is a naturally occurring layered mineral with a structure composed of alternating stacks of SnS2-like and PbS-like layers. Although this superlattice is composed of a sequence of isotropic two-dimensional layers, it exhibits a spontaneous rippling that makes the material structurally anisotropic. We demonstrate that this rippling comes hand in hand with an inhomogeneous in-plane strain profile and anisotropic electrical, vibrational and optical properties. We argue that this symmetry breakdown results from a spatial modulation of the van der Waals interaction between layers due to the SnS2-like and PbS-like lattices incommensurability.

We present a systematic investigation of the electronic properties of bulk and few layer ReS$_2$ van der Waals crystals using low temperature optical spectroscopy. Weak photoluminescence emission is observed from two non-degenerate band edge excitonic transitions separated by $\sim$ 20 meV. The comparable emission intensity of both excitonic transitions is incompatible with a fully thermalized (Boltzmann) distribution of excitons, indicating the hot nature of the emission. While DFT calculations predict bilayer ReS$_2$ to have a direct fundamental band gap, our optical data suggests that the fundamental gap is indirect in all cases.

Spatially periodic structures with a long range period, referred to as moiré pattern, can be obtained in van der Waals bilayers in the presence of a small stacking angle or of lattice mismatch between the monolayers. Theoretical predictions suggest that the resulting spatially periodic variation of the band structure modifies the optical properties of both intra and interlayer excitons of transition metal dichalcogenides heterostructures. Here, we report on the impact of the moiré pattern formed in a MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ heterobilayer encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride. The periodic in-plane potential results in a splitting of the MoSe$_2$ exciton and trion in both emission and absorption spectra. The observed energy difference between the split peaks is fully consistent with theoretical predictions.

A detailed understanding of the carrier dynamics and emission characteristics of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites is critical for their optoelectronic and energy harvesting applications. In this work, we reveal the impact of the crystal lattice disorder on the photo-generated electron-hole pairs through low-temperature photoluminescence measurements. We provide strong evidence that the intrinsic disorder forms a sub-bandgap tail density of states, which determines the emission properties at low temperature. The PL spectra indicate that the disorder evolves with increasing temperature, changing its character from static to dynamic. This change is accompanied by a rapid drop of the PL efficiency, originating from the increased mobility of excitons/polarons, which enables them to reach deep non-radiative recombination centers more easily.

Degenerate extrema in the energy dispersion of charge carriers in solids, also referred to as valleys, can be regarded as a binary quantum degree of freedom, which can potentially be used to implement valleytronic concepts in van der Waals heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides. Using magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy, we achieve a deeper insight into the valley polarization and depolarization mechanisms of interlayer excitons formed across a MoS$_2$/MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ heterostructure. We account for the non-trivial behavior of the valley polarization as a function of the magnetic field by considering the interplay between exchange interaction and phonon mediated intervalley scattering in a system consisting of Zeeman-split energy levels. Our results represent a crucial step towards the understanding of the properties of interlayer excitons, with strong implications for the implementation of atomically thin valleytronic devices.

From organic electronics to biological systems, understanding the role of intermolecular interactions between spin pairs is a key challenge. Here we show how such pairs can be selectively addressed with combined spin and optical sensitivity. We demonstrate this for bound pairs of spin-triplet excitations formed by singlet fission, with direct applicability across a wide range of synthetic and biological systems. We show that the site-sensitivity of exchange coupling allows distinct triplet pairs to be resonantly addressed at different magnetic fields, tuning them between optically bright singlet (S=0) and dark triplet, quintet (S=1,2) configurations: this induces narrow holes in a broad optical emission spectrum, uncovering exchange-specific luminescence. Using fields up to 60 T, we identify three distinct triplet-pair sites, with exchange couplings varying over an order of magnitude (0.3-5 meV), each with its own luminescence spectrum, coexisting in a single material. Our results reveal how site-selectivity can be achieved for organic spin pairs in a broad range of systems.

We investigate the impact of the encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on the Raman spectrum of few layer black phosphorus. The encapsulation results in a significant reduction of the line width of the Raman modes of black phosphorus, due to a reduced phonon scattering rate. We observe a so far elusive peak in the Raman spectra $\sim$4cm$^{-1}$ above the A$_{\text{g}}^1$ mode in trilayer and thicker flakes, which had not been observed experimentally. The newly observed mode originates from the strong black phosphorus inter-layer interaction, which induces a hardening of the surface atoms vibration with respect to the corresponding modes of the inner layers. The observation of this mode suggests a significant impact of h-BN encapsulation on the properties of black phosphorus and can serve as an indicator of the quality of its surface.

Stacking atomic monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has emerged as an effective way to engineer their properties. In principle, the staggered band alignment of TMD heterostructures should result in the formation of inter-layer excitons with long lifetimes and robust valley polarization. However, these features have been observed simultaneously only in MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures. Here we report on the observation of long lived inter-layer exciton emission in a MoS$_2$/MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ trilayer van der Waals heterostructure. The inter-layer nature of the observed transition is confirmed by photoluminescence spectroscopy, as well as by analyzing the temporal, excitation power and temperature dependence of the inter-layer emission peak. The observed complex photoluminescence dynamics suggests the presence of quasi-degenerate momentum-direct and momentum-indirect bandgaps. We show that circularly polarized optical pum** results in long lived valley polarization of inter-layer exciton. Intriguingly, the inter-layer exciton photoluminescence has helicity opposite to the excitation. Our results show that through a careful choice of the TMDs forming the van der Waals heterostructure it is possible to control the circular polarization of the inter-layer exciton emission.

Perovskite solar cells with record power conversion efficiency are fabricated by alloying both hybrid and fully inorganic compounds. While the basic electronic properties of the hybrid perovskites are now well understood, key electronic parameters for solar cell performance, such as the exciton binding energy of fully inorganic perovskites, are still unknown. By performing magneto transmission measurements, we determine with high accuracy the exciton binding energy and reduced mass of fully inorganic CsPbX$_3$ perovskites (X=I, Br, and an alloy of these). The well behaved (continuous) evolution of the band gap with temperature in the range $4-270$\,K suggests that fully inorganic perovskites do not undergo structural phase transitions like their hybrid counterparts. The experimentally determined dielectric constants indicate that at low temperature, when the motion of the organic cation is frozen, the dielectric screening mechanism is essentially the same both for hybrid and inorganic perovskites, and is dominated by the relative motion of atoms within the lead-halide cage.

At even higher energies around 0.99 and 1.6 eV, new additional strong absorptions are observed with a temperature and magnetic-field dependence which suggest that they originate from higher band gaps. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), together with other two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted great interest due to the unique optical and electrical properties of atomically thin layers. In order to fulfill their potential, develo** large-area growth and understanding the properties of TMDCs have become crucial. Here, we used molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to grow atomically thin MoSe$_2$ on GaAs(111)B. No intermediate compounds were detected at the interface of as-grown films. Careful optimization of the growth temperature can result in the growth of highly aligned films with only two possible crystalline orientations due to broken inversion symmetry. As-grown films can be transferred onto insulating substrates allowing their optical and electrical properties to be probed. By using polymer electrolyte gating, we have achieved ambipolar transport in MBE-grown MoSe$_2$. The temperature-dependent transport characteristics can be explained by the 2D variable-range hop** (2D-VRH) model, indicating that the transport is strongly limited by the disorder in the film.

III-V nanostructures have the potential to revolutionize optoelectronics and energy harvesting. For this to become a reality, critical issues such as reproducibility and sensitivity to defects should be resolved. By discussing the optical properties of MBE grown GaAs nanomembranes we highlight several features that bring them closer to large scale applications. Uncapped membranes exhibit a very high optical quality, expressed by extremely narrow neutral exciton emission, allowing the resolution of the more complex excitonic structure for the first time. Cap** of the membranes with an AlGaAs shell results in a strong increase of emission intensity but also to a shift and broadening of the exciton peak. This is attributed to the existence of impurities in the shell, beyond MBE-grade quality, showing the high sensitivity of these structures to the presence of impurities. Finally, emission properties are identical at the sub-micron and sub-millimeter scale, demonstrating the potential of these structures for large scale applications.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are plagued by a significantly lower optical quality compared to exfoliated TMDC. In this work we show that the optical quality of CVD-grown MoSe$_2$ is completely recovered if the material is sandwiched in MoS$_2$/MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ trilayer van der Waals heterostructures. We show by means of density-functional theory that this remarkable and unexpected result is due to defect healing: S atoms of the more reactive MoS$_2$ layers are donated to heal Se vacancy defects in the middle MoSe$_2$ layer. In addition, the trilayer structure exhibits a considerable charge-transfer mediated valley polarization of MoSe$_2$ without the need for resonant excitation. Our fabrication approach, relying solely on simple flake transfer technique, paves the way for the scalable production of large-area TMDC materials with excellent optical quality.

The exciton binding energy of $16 \pm 2$meV in the low temperature orthorhombic phase is almost identical to the value found in polycrystalline samples, crucially ruling out any possibility that the exciton binding energy depends on the grain size. In the room temperature tetragonal phase, an upper limit for the exciton binding energy of $12 \pm 4$ meV is estimated from the evolution of 1s-2s splitting at high magnetic field.

A rate equation model for the dark and bright excitons kinetics is proposed which explains the wide variation in the observed degree of circular polarization of the PL emission in different TMDs monolayers. Our work suggests that the dark exciton states play an important, and previously unsuspected role in determining the degree of polarization of the PL emission. A dark exciton ground state provides a robust reservoir for valley polarization, which tries to maintain a Boltzmann distribution of the bright exciton states in the same valley via the intra valley bright dark exciton scattering mechanism. The dependence of the degree of circular polarization on the detuning energy of the excitation in MoSe$_2$ suggests that the electron-hole exchange interaction dominates over two LA phonon emission mechanism for inter valley scattering in TMDs.

Here we report a study of temperature dependent micro-photoluminescence which shows a strong spatial inhomogeneity related to the presence of microcrystalline grains, which can be both light and dark. In all of the tri-iodide based materials there is evidence that the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition observed around 160K does not occur uniformly across the sample with domain formation related to the underlying microcrystallite grains, some of which remain in the high temperature, tetragonal, phase even at very low temperatures. At low temperature the tetragonal domains can be significantly influenced by local defects in the layers. In FAPbBr$_{3}$ a more macroscopic domain structure is observed with large numbers of grains forming phase correlated regions.

The exciton dynamics in monolayer black phosphorus is investigated over a very wide range of photoexcited exciton densities using time resolved photoluminescence. At low excitation densities, the exciton dynamics is successfully described in terms of a double exponential decay. With increasing exciton population, a fast, non-exponential component develops as exciton-exciton annihilation takes over as the dominant recombination mechanism under high excitation conditions. Our results identify an upper limit for the injection density, after which exciton-exciton annihilation reduces the quantum yield, which will significantly impact the performance of light emitting devices based on single layer black phosphorus.

Abstract:
Magneto transmission spectroscopy was employed to study the valley Zeeman effect in large-area monolayer MoS$_{2}$ and MoSe$_{2}$. The extracted values of the valley g-factors for both A- and B-exciton were found be similar with $g_v \simeq -4.5$. The samples are expected to be strained due to the CVD growth on sapphire at high temperature ($700^\circ$C). However, the estimated strain, which is ma…

However, the estimated strain, which is maximum at low temperature, is only $\simeq 0.2\%$. Theoretical considerations suggest that the strain is too small to significantly influence the electronic properties. This is confirmed by the measured value of valley g-factor, and the measured temperature dependence of the band gap, which are almost identical for CVD and mechanically exfoliated MoS$_2$.

Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy are used to investigate the optical properties of single layer black phosphorus obtained by mechanical exfoliation of bulk crystals under an argon atmosphere. The Raman spectroscopy, performed in situ on the same flake as the photoluminescence measurements, demonstrates the single layer character of the investigated samples. The emission spectra, dominated by excitonic effects, display the expected in plane anisotropy. The emission energy depends on the type of substrate on which the flake is placed due to the different dielectric screening. Finally, the blue shift of the emission with increasing temperature is well described using a two oscillator model for the temperature dependence of the band gap.
