We have performed an experimental study on the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity $ρ$($T$) and heat capacity $C$($T$) of the Mo$_{1-x}$Re$_x$ $(x = 0.20, 0.25)$ alloy superconductors in different magnetic fields. In the presence of applied magnetic field, the electrical resistivity of these alloys go to zero at a temperature well above the bulk superconducting transition temperature obtained with the help of heat capacity measurements in the same magnetic field. Our study indicates the presence of surface superconducting state in these alloys, where the flux lines are pinned in the surface sheath of the superconductor. The configuration of the flux-lines (2d pancake-like) in the surface sheath is understood in the realm of the flux-spot model. Experimental evidence in support of the surface mixed-state state or "Kulik vortex-state" and the occurrence of a vortex-liquid to vortex-glass transition is presented.

Isothermal magnetic field dependence of magnetization and the magnetic relaxation measurements were performed for $H$$\parallel$c axis on single crystal of Ba(Fe$_{0.935}$Co$_{0.065}$)$_2$As$_2$ pnictide superconductor having $T_c$ = 21.7 K. The second magnetization peak (SMP) for each isothermal $M(H)$ was observed in a wide temperature range from $T_c$ to the lowest temperature of measurement (2 K). Magnetic field dependence of relaxation rate $R(H)$, shows a peak (H$_{spt}$) between H$_{on}$ (onset of SMP in $M(H)$) and H$_p$ (peak field of SMP in $M(H)$), which is likely to be related with a vortex-lattice structural phase transition, as suggested in literature for similar sample. In addition, the magnetic relaxation measured for magnetic fields near H$_{spt}$ show some noise which might be the signature of the structural phase transition of the vortex lattice. Analysis of the magnetic relaxation data using Maley's criterion and the collective pinning theory suggests that the second magnetization peak (SMP) in the sample is due to the collective (elastic) to plastic creep crossover, which is also accompanied with a rhombic to square vortex lattice phase transition. Analysis of the pinning force density suggests single dominating pinning mechanism in the sample and is not showing the usual $δ$l and $δT_c$ nature of pinning. The critical current density ($J_c$) estimated using the Bean's critical state model is found to be 5 $\times$ 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$ at 2 K in the zero magnetic field limit. Surprisingly, the maximum in the pinning force density is not responsible for the maximum value of the critical current density in the sample.

We report a detailed study of isofield magnetic relaxation and isothermal magnetization measurements with $H$$\parallel$c on an underdoped Ba$_{0.75}$K$_{0.25}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ pnictide single crystal, with superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ = 28 K. The second magnetization peak (SMP) has been observed at temperatures below $T_c$/2 and vanished at higher temperatures. The observed behaviour of the SMP has been studied by measuring the magnetic field dependence of relaxation rate, $R(H)$ and by performing the Maley's analysis. The results suggest that the crossover from collective to plastic pinning observed in the SMP disappears above 12 K with plastic pinning replacing collective pinning. An interesting $H$-$T$ phase diagram is obtained. The critical current density ($J_c$) was estimated using Bean's model and found to be $\sim$ $3.4 \times 10^9$ A/m$^2$ at 10 K in the SMP region, which is comparable to an optimally doped Ba-KFe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor and may be exploited for potential technological applications. The pinning mechanism is found to be unconventional and does not follow the usual $δl$ and $δT_c$ pinning models, which suggest the intrinsic nature of pinning in the compound.

In this paper, we study the development of anisotropy in strong MHD turbulence in the presence of a large scale magnetic field B 0 by analyzing the results of direct numerical simulations. Our results show that the developed anisotropy among the different components of the velocity and magnetic field is a direct outcome of the inverse cascade of energy of the perpendicular velocity components u? and a forward cascade of the energy of the parallel component u k . The inverse cascade develops for a strong B0, where the flow exhibits a strong vortical structure by the suppression of fluctuations along the magnetic field. Both the inverse and the forward cascade are examined in detail by investigating the anisotropic energy spectra, the energy fluxes, and the shell to shell energy transfers among different scales.

This work examines the formation of wake fields caused by ions streaming around a charged dust particle, using three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations with charge-neutral collisions included. The influence of an external driving electric field, which leads to a non-Maxwellian distribution of ions, is investigated in detail. The wake features formed for non-Maxwellian ions exhibit significant deviations from those observed within the model of a shifted Maxwellian distribution. The dependence of the peak amplitude and position of the wake potential upon the degree of collisionality is analyzed for a wide range of streaming velocities (Mach numbers). In contrast to a shifted Maxwellian distribution of ions, the drift-driven non-Maxwellian distribution exhibits an increase of the wake amplitude of the first attractive peak with increase in collisionality for high streaming velocities. At very low Mach numbers, collision-induced amplification is observed for Maxwellian as well as non-Maxwellian distributions.

The analyses of SdH oscillations observed in magneto-resistance data using Lifshitz-Kosevich equation reveal a systematic decrease in the Fermi surface area with Sb substitution. The Berry phase obtained from the Landau Level fan diagram suggests the occurrence of 2D oscillations arising from a Topological Surface State (TSS) for Sb concentrations of x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1; while 2D oscillation seen at higher Sb concentration is attributed to surface 2D electron gas consequent to downward band bending.

Many real time-series exhibit behavior adequate to long range dependent data. Additionally very often these time-series have constant time periods and also have characteristics similar to Gaussian processes although they are not Gaussian. Therefore there is need to consider new classes of systems to model these kind of empirical behavior. Motivated by this fact in this paper we analyze two processes which exhibit long range dependence property and have additional interesting characteristics which may be observed in real phenomena. Both of them are constructed as the superposition of fractional Brownian motion (FBM) and other process. In the first case the internal process, which plays role of the time, is the gamma process while in the second case the internal process is its inverse. We present in detail their main properties paying main attention to the long range dependence property. Moreover, we show how to simulate these processes and estimate their parameters. We propose to use a novel method based on rescaled modified cumulative distribution function for estimation of parameters of the second considered process. This method is very useful in description of rounded data, like waiting times of subordinated processes delayed by inverse subordinators. By using the Monte Carlo method we show the effectiveness of proposed estimation procedures.

The variation of resistivity with temperature that points to a metallic behaviour in Bi2Se3, shows an upturn at low temperatures in the Te doped samples. Magnetoresistance measurements in Bi2Se3 show clear signatures of Shubnikov de Hass oscillations that gets suppressed in the Te doped samples. In the Bi2SeTe2 sample, the magneto-resistance shows a cusp like positive magneto-resistance at low magnetic fields and low temperatures, a feature associated with weak antilocalisation (WAL), that crosses over to negative magneto-resistance at higher fields. The qualitatively different magnetotransport behaviour seen in Bi2SeTe2 as compared to Bi2Se3 is rationalised in terms of the disorder, through an estimate of the carrier density, carrier mobility and an analysis in terms of the Ioffe Regel criterion with support from Hall Effect measurements.

There is a systematic change in the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) from negative to positive as the Si composition is increased. The Hall co-efficient shows that the carriers are electron like and the carrier density increases with Si concentration. Resistance measurements under magnetic field indicate a decreasing behavior under the application of magnetic field at low temperature region (T< 60 K), suggesting the suppression of scattering by magnetic field. Temperature and field dependent magnetization measurements did not show any significant change apart from the fact that the presence of super paramagnetic (SPM) cluster and its ordering at low temperatures. Arrott plot analysis of magnetization versus field also indicates the magnetic ordering with applied field below 60 K.

In this study we examine the phase transitions in single crystals of [(CH3)2NH2]Co(HCOO)3], using magnetization and specific heat measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Magnetisation measurements indicate a transition at 15 K that is associated with an antiferromagnetic transition. The results of the isothermal magnetization versus magnetic field curves demonstrate the presence of a single-ion magnet phase, coexisting with antiferromagnetism. A peak in specific heat is seen at 15 K, corresponding to the magnetic transition. The enthalpy of the transition evaluated from the area under the specific heat peak decreases with the application of magnetic field of upto8 T. This is suggestive of long range antiferromagnetic magnetic order, giving way to single-ion magnetic behavior under external field. In experiments at high temperatures, corresponding to the well-known structural transition in this system, the specific heat measurements, shows a peak at ~155K, that is insensitive to applied magnetic field. The magnetisation in this temperature range, while it exhibits a paramagnetic behavior, shows a distinct jump that has been attributed to a spin-state transition of Co2+ associated with the structural transition.

The results indicate that while the orthorhombicity shows the characteristic increase with decrease in temperature, the As-Fe-As bond angles, Fe-As bond length and positional co-ordinate of the As show definite anomalies close to the structural transition. First principle ab-initio simulations are performed in order to understand the experimentally observed anomalies in structural parameters. The experimental observations are discussed in the context of the simulation results.

The critical current density has been measured on single crystals of Ru substituted BaFe2As2 superconductor at several temperatures and in fields up to 16 T. The magnetisation versus field isotherms reveal the occurrence of a clear second magnetisation peak (SMP) also known as fish-tail effect for both H parallel and perpendicular to c-axis of the crystal. The in-field resistance and magnetisation data are used to put forth a vortex phase diagram. The nature of the vortices have been determined from scaling behaviour of the pinning force density extracted from the Jc-H isotherms. The scaled JC versus reduced temperature behaviour seems to fit to a power law that indicates unambiguously that pinning in this system arises due to the spatial variation in the mean free path, viz. delta-l pinning.

The rho(T) shows a negative co-efficient of resistivity under pressure upto 3.2 GPa. The occurrence of an insulator to metal transition (MIT) in an external P ~4.5 GPa is indicated by a change in the temperature co-efficient in the rho(T) data at ~36 K . However complete metallization in entire temperature range is seen at a P~5.8 GPa. High pressure XRD studies carried out at room temperature also shows an anomaly in the pressure versus volume curve around P ~ 5 GPa, without a change in crystal structure, indicative of an electronic transition. Further, a clear precipitous drop in rho(T) at ~17 K is seen for P ~5.8 GPa which suggests the possibility of the system going over to a superconducting ground state.

Temperature dependent electrical resistivity and thermopower measurements were carried out on Gd1-xCaxBaCo2O5.53 with x varying between 0 and 0.25. Ca subsitution leads to the incorporation of holes (Co4+) into the system that leads to a reduction in resistivity and a stabilisation of the ferromagnetic phase at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of resistivity and thermopower are markedly different in the Ca doped sample, with a dramatic reduction in the resistivity, as compared to that in the pristine sample. The variation in both the resistivity and thermopower with temperature is explained in terms of the transport of polarons in the ferromagnetic phase of Ca doped system.

All the compounds crystallize in the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs type structure (space group = P4/nmm). The lattice parameters (a and c) decrease as expected on substitution of smaller phosphorous at the arsenic site in PrOFe0.9Co0.1As and a decrease in TC was observed on substitution of P ions at a low rate of 0.13K/at. % of P for x > 0.1. The irreversibility field (Hirr) and critical current density (JC), obtained using the AC susceptibility measurements was found to decrease monotonically with increasing 'P' concentration. 'Hirr' is observed to be much smaller than HC2, pointing to a very low pinning energy. The pinning potential obtained using both in-field transport and AC susceptibility measurements indicate a low value of ~40 meV and show no significant variation with P substitution.

HC2 versus temperature was measured from temperature dependent resistivity, for various applied magnetic fields, H || ab and H || c. The [dHC2/dT]T=Tc, normalized with the corresponding TC, decreases with increasing Co content, for both directions. The anisotropy γ defined as HC2 || ab / HC2 || c shows a distinct increase with Co content, and its temperature dependence shows a peak close to the TC. Magneto transport measurements, in the spin density wave regions, showed significant negative MR for H || ab and positive MR of H || c in the x = 0.082 sample. In this paper we are concerned with the construction of a general principle that will allow us to produce regular spectral triples with finite and simple dimension spectrum. We introduce the notion of weak heat kernel asymptotic expansion (WHKAE) property of a spectral triple and show that the weak heat kernel asymptotic expansion allows one to conclude that the spectral triple is regular with finite simple dimension spectrum. The usual heat kernel expansion implies this property. Finally we show that WHKAE is stable under quantum double suspension, a notion introduced by Hong and Szymanski. Therefore quantum double suspending compact Riemannian spin manifolds iteratively we get many examples of regular spectral triples with finite simple dimension spectrum. This covers all the odd dimensional quantum spheres. Our methods also apply to the case of noncommutative torus.

We present Herschel SPIRE and PACS photometeric observations of the low metallicity (Z ~ 0.35 solar) nearby dwarf galaxy, NGC 1705, in six wavelength bands as part of the Dwarf Galaxy Survey guaranteed time Herschel Key Program. We confirm the presence of two dominant circumnuclear IR-bright regions surrounding the central super star cluster that had been previously noted at mid-IR wavelengths and in the sub-mm by LABOCA. On constructing a global spectral energy distribution using the SPIRE and PACS photometry, in conjunction with archival IR measurements, we note the presence of an excess at sub-mm wavelengths. This excess suggests the presence of a significant cold dust component within NGC 1705 and was modeled as an additional cold component in the SED. Although alternative explanations for the sub-mm excess beyond 350 microns, such as changes to the dust emissivity cannot be ruled out, the most likely explanation for the observed submillimetre excess is that of an additional cold dust component.

We find that the ratios of wave bands between 160 and 500 microns are primarily dependent on radius but that the ratio of 70 to 160 micron emission shows no clear dependence on surface brightness or radius. These results along with analyses of the spectral energy distributions imply that the 160-500 micron emission traces 15-30 K dust heated by evolved stars in the bulge and disc whereas the 70 micron emission includes dust heated by the active galactic nucleus and young stars in star forming regions.

We present the first Herschel PACS and SPIRE images of the low-metallicity galaxy NGC6822 observed from 70 to 500 mu and clearly resolve the HII regions with PACS and SPIRE. We find that the ratio 250/500 is dependent on the 24 mu surface brightness in NGC6822, which would locally link the heating processes of the coldest phases of dust in the ISM to the star formation activity. We model the SEDs of some regions HII regions and less active regions across the galaxy and find that the SEDs of HII regions show warmer ranges of dust temperatures. We derive very high dust masses when graphite is used in our model to describe carbon dust. Using amorphous carbon, instead, requires less dust mass to account for submm emission due to its lower emissivity properties. This indicates that SED models including Herschel constraints may require different dust properties than commonly used.

We present infrared colours (in the 25-500 mic spectral range) and UV to radio continuum spectral energy distributions of a sample of 51 nearby galaxies observed with SPIRE on Herschel. The observed sample includes all morphological classes, from quiescent ellipticals to active starbursts. Active galaxies have warmer colour temperatures than normal spirals. In ellipticals hosting a radio galaxy, the far-infrared (FIR) emission is dominated bynthe synchrotron nuclear emission. The colour temperature of the cold dust is higher in quiescent E-S0a than in star-forming systems probably because of the different nature of their dust heating sources (evolved stellar populations, X-ray, fast electrons) and dust grain properties. In contrast to the colour temperature of the warm dust, the f350/f500 index sensitive to the cold dust decreases with star formation and increases with metallicity, suggesting an overabundance of cold dust or an emissivity parameter beta<2 in low metallicity, active systems.

We compare relative performance of local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for predicting such physical properties for these metals. We also make a relative study between two different flavors of GGA exchange correlation functional, namely, PW91 and PBE. These calculations show that there is a discrepancy between DFT calculations and experimental data. In order to understand this discrepancy in the calculation of vacancy formation energy, we introduce a correction for the surface intrinsic error corresponding to an exchange correlation functional using the scheme implemented by Mattsson et al. The evolution of pressure induced superconductivity in single crystal as well as polycrystalline samples of BaFe2As2 has been investigated through temperature dependent electrical resistivity studies in 0-7 GPa pressure range. While the superconducting transition remains incomplete in polycrystalline sample, a clear pressure induced superconductivity with zero resistivity at the expense of magnetic transition, associated with spin density wave (SDW), is observed in the single crystal sample. The superconducting transition temperature (TC) is seen to increase upto a moderate pressure of about ~1.5 GPa and decreases monotonically beyond this pressure. The SDW transition temperature TSDW decreases rapidly with increasing pressure and vanishes above ~1.5 GPa.

Abstract:
The occurrence of bulk superconductivity at ~22 K is reported in polycrystalline samples of BaFe2-xRuxAs2 for nominal Ru content in the range of x=0.75 to 1.125. A systematic suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature (TSDW) precedes the appearance of superconductivity in the system. A phase diagram is proposed based on the measured TSDW and superconducting transition temperature (TC) variations as a function of Ru composition. Band structure calculations, indicate introduction of electron carriers in the system upon Ru substitutiom. The calculated magnetic moment on Fe shows a minimum at x=1.0, suggesting that the suppression of the magnetic moment is associated with the emergence of superconductivity. Results of low temperature and high field Mossbauer measurements are presented. These indicate weakening of magnetic interaction with Ru substitution

Magnetisation and magnetoresistance measurements have been carried out on superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2 samples with x=0.40 and 0.50. From low field magnetization data carried out at different temperatures below TC, HC1 has been extracted. The plot of HC1 versus temperature shows an anomalous increase at low temperatures. From high field magnetization hysterisis measurements carried out in fields up to 16 T at 4.2 K and 20 K, the critical current density has been evaluated using the Bean critical state model. The JC determined from the high field data is >104A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 5 T. The superconducting transitions were also measured resistively in increasing applied magnetic fields up to 12 Tesla. From the variation of the TC onset with applied field, dHC2/dT at TC was obtained to be -7.708 T/K and -5.57 T/K in the samples with x=0.40 and 0.50.

Abstract:
The odd dimensional quantum sphere $S_q^{2\ell+1}$ is a homogeneous space for the quantum group $SU_q(\ell+1)$. A generic equivariant spectral triple for $S_q^{2\ell+1}$ on its $L_2$ space was constructed by Chakraborty & Pal. We prove regularity for that spectral triple here. We also compute its dimension spectrum and show that it is simple. We give detailed construction of its smooth function…

We give detailed construction of its smooth function algebra and some related algebras that help proving regularity and in the computation of the dimension spectrum. Following the idea of Connes for $SU_q(2)$, we first study another spectral triple for $S_q^{2\ell+1}$ equivariant under torus group action constructed by Chakraborty & Pal. We then derive the results for the $SU_q(\ell+1)$-equivariant triple in the $q=0$ case from those for the torus equivariant triple. For the $q\neq 0$ case, we deduce regularity and dimension spectrum from the $q=0$ case.

Abstract:
Nickel substitution at the cobalt site in NaxCoO2 induces a Metal Insulator Transition (MIT) and the temperature at which this occurs (TMIT) increases with Ni content. Low temperature far infrared measurements on polycrystalline samples of Na0.75CoO2 and Na0.75Co0.95Ni0.05O2 (TMIT = ~ 150K) were carried out to look for signatures of this transition. Low temperature far infrared measurements on polycrystalline samples of Na0.75CoO2 and Na0.75Co0.95Ni0.05O2 (TMIT = ~ 150K) were carried out to look for signatures of this transition. While both the samples show an evident splitting of the high frequency Co-O mode on lowering the temperature, dramatic changes are observed in the low frequency sodium mode in Na0.75Co0.95Ni0.05O2 clearly pointing out to an ordering of the sodium ions in the low temperature insulating state.

Abstract:
We report on the effect of Ni substitution at the Co site on the physical properties of NaxCoO2 system by investigating the series NaxCo1-yNiyO2 (x=0.75, 0<y<0.15). An upturn in the resistivity is observed in all Ni substituted samples as the temperature is lowered, suggestive of the occurrence of a Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT). The temperature at which this transition occurs increases with Ni content. The temperature dependence of the resistivity in the metallic region in the Ni substituted samples shows a T2 dependence, which is qualitatively different from that observed in the pristine sample. The evolution of the Fano asymmetry parameter, extracted by analyzing the lineshape of the IR active in-plane Co-O mode, both as a function of Ni concentration and temperature corroborates the occurrence of the MIT. It is argued that the progressive substitution of the Co4+ ions with Ni increases the probability of double occupancy and therefore the on-site Coulomb interaction energy leading to a shift in the thermodynamically driven MIT to higher temperatures.

The Raman line corresponding to the E2g phonon mode shows progressive hardening from 620 cm-1 in pristine MgB2 to 775 cm-1 in the sample with carbon fraction x=0.2. The corresponding line width on the other hand, increases from a value of about 220 cm-1 to 286 cm-1 in samples with x = 0.1, beyond which it decreases to a value 167 cm-1 for x=0.2. From the average mode frequency and the line width obtained from Raman measurements and taking the values of N(0) obtained from the calculated variation in s hole density of states in MgB2-xCx, the electron phonon coupling strength to the E2g phonon, l2g, is evaluated using Allen’s formula. This remains large for low C fraction, but shows rapid decrease for x > 0.10. Using this value of l2g appropriately weighted, TC is obtained from McMillan’s equation. These values are in good agreement with the experimentally measured TC variation in MgB2-xCx.

Abstract:
Raman scattering measurements have been carried out in MgB2-xCx for x=0.0 -0.30. The broad Raman band around 600cm-1 range, which corresponds to the E2g mode in MgB2 is seen to narrow and reduce in intensity with increasing carbon content. For x>0.15, new set of bands appear at 1200 cm-1 possibly arising from the B-C, E2g modes. The decrease in Tc with carbon substitution seems to correlate with…

Our synthesis procedure, following the recipe for MgB2, involves reaction of elemental components in a Ta crucible at 900o C under 50 bar of argon pressure. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate the formation of P63/mmc structure up to x=0.6. However, no diamagnetic signal or zero resistance, corresponding to the superconducting transition, was observed in the temperature range of 300 to 4 K. This is possibly related to the presence of disorder in the B-C stacking; evidence for which is suggested from a study of the vibrational modes of LixBC through infrared spectroscopy.
