Abstract:
We study the electronic structure of the ferromagnetic spinel $\mathrm{Hg}\mathrm{Cr}_2\mathrm{Se}_4$ by soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) and first-principles calculations. While a theoretical study has predicted that this material is a magnetic Weyl semimetal, SX-ARPES measurements give direct evidence for a semiconducting state in the ferromagnetic phase. Band calc…

Band calculations based on the density functional theory with hybrid functionals reproduce the experimentally determined band gap value, and the calculated band dispersion matches well with ARPES experiments. We conclude that the theoretical prediction of a Weyl semimetal state in $\mathrm{Hg}\mathrm{Cr}_2\mathrm{Se}_4$ underestimates the band gap, and this material is a ferromagnetic semiconductor.

The infrared optical, magneto-optical and magnetostrictive properties of CoFe2O4 single crystal are considered. The magneto-transmission and magneto-reflection of natural light in magnetostrictive CoFe2O4 spinel are studied in the Voight experimental geometry. These magneto-optical effects are very high and associate with a change of the fundamental absorption edge and impurity absorption bands under magnetic field. It is presented the effects strongly depend on both the magnitude and orientation of magnetic field relative to the crystallographic axes of the crystal. The clear connection between magneto-absorption of light in the infrared spectral range and magnetostriction of CoFe2O4 spinel is established. The contribution of magnetostriction to the magnetic anisotropy constant of the CoFe2O4 crystal is shown to be abnormally great.

Optical absorption spectra of nanocrystalline cupric oxide CuO samples, obtained using the converging spherical shock wave procedure, reveal significant spectral weight red-shift as compared with spectra of single crystalline CuO samples. In addition, some of these samples manifest the remarkable temperature-dependent "peak-dip-hump" feature near 1.3-1.6 eV. The minimal model suggested to explain both effects implies the nanoceramic CuO to be a system of two species of identical metallic-like droplets with volume fractions p1 >> p2 and dam** parameters gamma1 >> gamma2, respectively, dispersed in an effective insulating matrix. In other words, both effects are assigned to the surface plasmon (Mie) resonances due to a small volume fraction of metallic-like nanoscale droplets with Drude optical response embedded in the bare insulating medium. Simple effective medium theory is shown to provide the reasonable description of the experimental spectra.

The temperature dependencies of the optical and magneto-optical properties of the films exhibit features, which can be attributed to the transition of the Co$^{3+}$ ions from the low-spin state (S=0) to the intermediate-spin state (S=1) and to orbital ordering of the Co$^{3+}$ ions in the latter state. The evolution of the properties influenced by do** with Sr is interpreted on the basis of the phase separation model.

The IR optical absorption (0.1-1.5 eV) in the $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ films on LAO substrate exhibits the drastic temperature evolution of the spectral weight evidencing the insulator to metal transition. Single crystal films were found to reveal strong linear dichroism with anomalous spectral oscillations and fairly weak temperature dependence. Starting from the concept of phase separation, we develop the effective medium model to account for these effects. The optical anisotropy of the films is attributed to the texturization of the ellipsoidal inclusions of the quasimetal phase caused by a mismatch of the film and substrate and the twin texture of the latter.

Transport, magnetic, magneto-optical (Kerr effect) and optical (light absorption) properties have been studied in an oriented polycrystalline La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} film which shows colossal magneto-resistance. The correlations between these properties are presented. A giant change in IR light transmission (more than a 1000-fold decrease) is observed on crossing the Curie temperature (about 270 K) from high to low temperature. Large changes in transmittance in a magnetic field were observed as well. The giant changes in transmittance and the large magneto-transmittance can be used for development of IR optoelectronic devices controlled by thermal and magnetic fields. Required material characteristics of doped manganites for these devices are discussed.
